Brittle cornea syndrome (BCS) is an autosomal recessive, multisystemic connective tissue disorder characterised by extreme corneal thinning and fragility. Mutations in transcription factors ZNF469 and PRDM5 cause BCS types 1 and 2, respectively. Corneal ulceration with prolonged healing following Nd:YAG laser cyclophotocoagulation in dogs is a frequent complication. It is hypothesized that these corneal ulcerations may be a form of neurotrophic keratitis due to laser-induced damage to corneal innervation. This model will then be used to investigate the effect of laser refractive surgery.
