Full textWorry and rumination are implicated in various disorders and are believed to contribute to the symptoms that create and maintain psychopathology. The current critical review will examine worry and rumination in the context of depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). The review will focus on these two types of repetitive negative thinking more specifically the (a) definition, (b) process, (c) theories, and (d) maintenance of psychopathology; as well as similarities and differences between these two processes. A second emphasis will be on the importance of cultural considerations when treating individuals with emotional disorders. A third focus of the analysis will be on the rationale, overview, and literature associated with a transdiagnostic treatment named the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP) . Finally, this review will conclude by highlighting futures research studies that can be implemented to improve upon the existing UP research.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Business schools, businesses and prospective students will benefit from an indication of prospective MBA students’ likelihood of success in their studies. This study examines the relationship between GMAT and SHL selection tests and performance of students at the University of Stellenbosch Business School. The aim is to establish the feasibility of using models derived from the selection tests in order to identify students who are unlikely to succeed. It was found that variables analyzed in GMAT and SHL numeric and verbal tests as well as the SHL OPQ 32-test correlate significantly with weighted average marks on the MBA programme. Significant correlations were also found between GMAT and SHL numeric and verbal tests and the marks obtained in subjects with high failure rates. Different variables correlate significantly with weighted average marks depending on the mode of study. Said correlations were however found to be too weak to build a model to predict, with accuracy, the performance of a student based solely on the results of selection tests. Adding the subject Computer Literacy strengthens the models to the extent that discriminant analysis can identify many of the students whom would be expected to fail. Prediction efficiency of discriminant models is however not high enough to allow its sole use as basis for exclusion of prospective students. Linear models could not predict any of the students who failed to achieve a weighted average mark of 50% or above. Linear regression models could however explain 27.8% to 52.6% of variability in weighted averaged depending on the method of study and selection test taken. Linear regression and discriminant models can thus be used as part of a judgement based selection process or as a basis for the provision of guidance to individuals, it is however not suitable for use as sole measure in admissions decisions.

This is an exploratory study on the existing transition efforts of the Kansas State University Graduate School for master’s degree students. There are a variety of graduate students at Kansas State University with many different graduate program experiences. This study identifies the current status of incoming master’s degree students outreach and details experiences of transitioning graduate students to make suggestions on future strategies. It is vital to identify if, and which, programs are catering to the different needs of these students during their socialization into their graduate program. The study has three main objectives: (1) determine the level of personal contact and emphasis on relationship-building during a master’s degree student’s transition, (2) identify the general efforts and practices of specific master’s degree programs and the Kansas State University Graduate School, and (3) to document the needs of students as they transition into graduate school at Kansas State University. The research was conducted through use of confidential one-on-one in-depth interviews with nine Kansas State University graduate program directors and two Graduate School administrators. Ten newly admitted to the Kansas State University graduate program in the spring of 2013 were interviewed. The qualitative approach to this study enabled the researcher to get detailed testimonials and experience-based knowledge from all of these key stakeholders. Overall, the study revealed that graduate students value face-to-face and personal interaction and showed that student-to-student contact is a preferred component to a successful socialization of graduate students. The needs of transitioning graduate students included assistance with course scheduling, assistantship responsibilities, advisor selection, and an overall understanding that graduate school is different from undergraduate school. Future graduate program strategies that would assist in the successful socialization of graduate students include: orientations, meeting with graduate program directors, social and networking opportunities, and workshops. Involvement in student organizations and utilization of on-campus resources are also a part of most of the graduate programs, and graduate school transition outreach. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher offers suggestions to the Graduate School, graduate programs, and incoming students in order to help enhance the transition experience of master’s degree students into graduate school at Kansas State University.

The essence of this investigation is the socialization of the findings of the research carried by the graduate school in pedagogic field. Despite the scientific and technological advances that we see nowadays, the knowledge produced by the university continues restricted to more privileged circles of our society. Realizing this issue took us to put this investigation into practice. Ultimately, it has the goal to analyze the policies of socialization of scientific production, concerning its applicability to public schools, of the UFC Graduate Program in Education, from 1997 to 2011. This thesis asked if the researches developed by the Program were being socialized among active teachers of basic education. The paper is characterized as a case study, its locus being the university itself and the Program previously mentioned. The data obtained here derived from internal documents, the other data, the one concerned with the policies of socialization, were collected through the use of semi-structured interviews. Nine subjects participated, including four, current and former, Program coordinators and other five coordinators of research lines. The analysis was based on the principles of qualitative approach. Initially, a bibliographical research was conducted, making use of three different sources, as follows: dissertations and thesis defended throughout the Program, books and articles directly related to the theme and web search. This study allowed us to conclude that the UFC Graduate Program in Education carried out researches that bring contributions to the public school. As to the policies of socialization of scientific production, it is perceived that it meets its target audience within the walls of academia. However its reach towards public school teachers needs to be reconsidered. Solid actions are required in order that the knowledge derived from academic research can reach the public school.
