Abstract:
We propose and demonstrate, using optical experiments, a new reflex reflector structure called SuperPin Plus. The structure is composed of special pin groups with dihedral-angle offsets in corner cubes. One of the specular features brought by this new design is that it can comply with both the US SAE (US Society of Automotive Engineers) standard and the EU ECE (Economic Commission for Europe) standard, so that manufacturing costs of reflex reflector for both European and American automobile markets can be reduced. By using genetic algorithms for optimization, the angles and the positions of th

Abstract:
This paper describes a position estimation method for a wheeled mobile robot by integrating information in an odometric dead reckoning and a laser navigation system. Dead reckoning regularly gives the robot positions by the rotational counts of the two side wheels. The laser navigation system successively observes the bearing angles relative to the corner cube reflectors fixed in the robot environment. The chi-squared hypothesis testing is applied to reliably identify the corner cubes. The identified angle measurements modify the robot positions calculated by the dead reckoning based on the Ex

Abstract:
This document presents the polarization conversion cube-corner retroreflector (PC-CCR). The PCCCR is a cube-corner retroreflector which transforms the electricfield as follows: the major axis is rotated by 90° and the handedness is reversed.Since the polarization properties of a CCR are dependent on the polarization properties of each surface, exploration of the space of Mueller matrices is organized by surface type. The Mueller matrix of CCR having each of several surface types is calculated, including the traditional hollow metal and solid glass CCR types. PCCCR only occur for non-isotropic

Abstract:
There is an increasing demand for sensors in extreme environments, i.e. high temperature and radiation environments, where conventional sensors lose their functionality and reliability because of the environmental impact. The dependence on electricity makes conventional sensor susceptible to extreme accident situation and demanding frequent maintenance which could be even more costly in those extreme environments. To overcome this problem, this thesis reports the development of a remote optically actuated and interrogated resonant sensor with a micro corner cube retroreflector (CCR) structure.

Unlike most of other MEMS CCRs, our CCR’s opening faces straight upwards, making its (1, 1, 1) direction, i.e. the direction along which the retro-reflection efficiency is maximum, perpendicular to the surface of the substrate. This architecture is more suitable for applications such as CCR-based portable, dynamic, optical identification cards. The tunability can be achieved by employing an electrostatically-actuated gap-

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the considerable research that has identified distinct functional circuits linking frontal cortex with the basal ganglia in the control of goal-directed and habitual actions. OCD is characterized by hyperactivity in a circuit involving some of these regions. Recent accounts of the interaction of goal-directed actions and habits suggest that these control processes interact hierarchically, so one alternative to current theories is that OCD reflects a dysfunction in this interactive process resulting in dysregulated action selection, whether that selection is driven by the

Modernist music is centrally concerned with the representation and narration of disability. The most characteristic features of musical modernism—fractured forms, immobilized harmonies, conflicting textural layers, radical simplification of means in some cases, and radical complexity and hermeticism in others—can be understood as musical representations of disability conditions, including deformity/disfigurement, mobility impairment, madness, idiocy, and autism. Modernist musical representation and narration of disability both reflect and shape (construct) disability in a eugenic age, a period
