Abstract:

Howard, Kat. "Cornered." Thesis, Mills College, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1551686.

Full text
Abstract:

'Cornered' interrogates woman's relationship to the domestic space, themes of the gothic, and the haunting dependence that some women have with the home, historically and even in the present. To articulate this idea, Kat used her own writing combined with language from the diaries of the Brontë sisters, as a lens through which to explore the woman whose home and most intimate surroundings are the very instruments of the imprisonment of her mind, body and personhood.

The Brontë sisters wrote wildly imaginative stories, while their real lives were restricted and controlled by their father. How is this struggle towards duality represented in the secret spaces of the home, in the language of the walls, corners, doorways and other charged locations? By interrogating this relationship, Kat can use it as a metaphor to explore the line between public and private, where that line is, and when it is blurred. The Brontës frequently turned towards their intimate surroundings as a metaphor for emotions and feelings that they were forbidden to express outright in the home. Many aspects of the self are buried in this landscape. Kat is interested in excavating these sites, to uncover what is obstructed behind the façade, to remove the myth of an idealized home, and examine what lingers.

Abstract:

Jimenez, Kenneth Leroy Jr. "Composer, Conductor, Cornetist: A Biography of Jean-Baptiste Schiltz (fl.1831-1868) and a Survey of his Works for Cornet and Piano." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10365/25552.

Abstract:
In its heyday, the cornet was a popular instrument and the brass instrument of choice for virtuosi worldwide. Cornet soloists such as Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825?1889) and Herbert Lincoln Clarke (1867?1945) impressed audiences with their technical prowess, and the solos they composed for cornet are in wide use today. However, the story of the cornet did not start with Arban or Clarke; an entire generation of cornetists had come before them, and they too wrote their own solos. This generation of cornetists was crucial in the development of the instrument. As performers, they helped to refine the cornet from a musical experiment to an immensely popular instrument, and as composers, their solos helped to propel the cornet on this popular path and inspired later virtuosi like Arban and Clarke. This disquisition addresses the limited information on early cornetists and their solos by providing new information about composer-cornetist Jean-Baptiste Schiltz (fl.1831-1868). Though Schiltz was an important figure in Paris during the first half of the nineteenth century, little has been written about him or his compositions. By consulting contemporary periodicals and modern scholarship, I am able to provide new biographical information on Schiltz, who was a pioneering performer on cornet, trumpet, and trombone. Additionally, I conduct a survey of Schiltz?s many works for cornet and piano. By thoroughly examining some of the surveyed works I demonstrate that Schiltz had a clear understanding of the capabilities of early cornets and cornetists, and that he chose particular melodies, keys, and even the length of the cornet itself in order to work around limitations. I also describe the historical value of the surveyed works and their possible uses today. Ultimately, this disquisition demonstrates that Schiltz was an important historical figure, and that his works for cornet and piano are valuable additions to the trumpet repertoire and ideal for trumpet instructors to use with students.

Xu, Linlin 1963. "Stress singularities at crack corners." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/291540.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis the stress and displacement fields near an embedded crack corner in a linear elastic medium are analytically computed. The conical-spherical coordinate system is introduced to solve this problem. It is observed that the strength of the stress singularity is dependent on the angle of the crack corner. The singularity becomes weaker, varying from r⁻¹ to r⁰, as the angle of the crack corner varies from 360° to 0°. Both symmetric and skew-symmetric loadings give the same variation of the behavior of the stress singularity. It is also observed that the order of the singularity is independent of Poisson's ratio, unlike the corner cracks at a free surface where Poisson's ratio sects the results.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a product development process, where an existing solution on a cab door have been analysed and developed, with the aim to result in a cost-effective concept solution for handling tolerances on the door frame. The methodological approach in this thesis is based on Volvo Construction Equipment’s development model; The Global Development Process, which started with a pre-study phase where the problem formulation was established. The problem formulation in short is to find a solution for how to handle narrow tolerances in steel profiles for the door weldment on cab doors. Various solution ideas were discussed and concepts were generated with focus to design a new cab door corner that would solve the problems addressed by the project. The applied method resulted in a final concept consisting of the same steel profiles but with new dimensions, and two new concepts in each corner; one corner module that is placed inside the steel profiles and joined by welding, and a plastic shell that covers the welded corner. The concept was validated using a prototype of the proposed solution, where tests show that the requirements were achieved, besides a few deficiencies. A cost comparison between the existing and the proposed solution was made within limitations for this thesis. The result of the cost comparison shows an indication of that the proposed solution can be more cost-effective than the existing solution. Some of the recommendations after have completing the project are to make a complete cost comparison to ensure that the indication is correct and to analyse the new components to optimize and define the dimensions of them.

Abstract:
South West Africa is in many instances a unique land. Its topography, climatic conditions, rainfall and vegetation are all facets of extremes. As far as it could be established the three European groups, the three Coloured groups and the eight Black nations (except perhaps the Bushmen) have all inhabited the land within the period of one century and they were still in the process of settling down during the nineteenth century. Each group and nation brought with them their own habits, language, religion and culture. The history of formal education in South West Africa dates from 1805, after trading and hunting expeditions from South Africa, as well as crew members from foreign ships visited the country and reported their findings. Prior to that, the country was unknown to the outside world. After the report of these expeditions were received in the different countries, missionaries were sent to South West Africa by various societies. Initially the missionaries carne from the London, Rhenish, Finnish, Wesleyan and Roman Catholic Missionary Societies. Missionaries from other societies followed later. After arriving in South West Africa, the missionaries found the country to be vast and inhospitable, with the most severe and extreme climatic conditions. Several of the native tribes were at war against each other and some were hostile towards the missionaries. No school buildings, furniture or equipment was available and the missionaries had to contend with only the basic amenities. The missionaries' initial attempts at formal education consisted of the study of the Bible, reading, writing, handcrafts and general discipline. There were virtually no text books available for school use and the lack of funds further hampered the educational movement tremendously. The nomadic nature of the inhabitants of the country made the missionary effort none the easier and the missionaries had to move with the tribes from place to place in an endeavour to continue the education of the tribes. The face that the different tribes were constantly in a state of war against each other, regarding territorial occupation and cattle thieving, also hampered the missionaries efforts. Communication in the educational process proved to be a major problem for the missionaries. There were no less than nine different Black nations in the country, each with its own language. Although these nine nations were in most cases territorially separated, it often happened that when a school was established, two of three different languages had to be spoken at the school. The inability to communicate in the mother tongue of each group at these schools caused further problems in educating the people. Because the missionaries could not speak the languages of the Blacks, they resorted to teaching through the medium of Dutch, which was the language most commonly spoken by the Whites who entered the country. A few of the tribes in the south, mostly of mixed origin and known as Coloureds, could speak Dutch because of their contact with the Whites of the Cape. Germany proclaimed South West Africa as a German colony in 1884. During the German occupation there was no mentionable advancement in the education for the Blacks in the country. The Germans did not find their stay in South West Africa a peaceful one. The occupational period was for the greater part, a time of turbulence, with wars between the tribes as well as between the Germans and several of the native inhabitants. This resulted once again in the scattering and dispersal of the different tribes. The only advantage to the missionaries during the German occupation, was a feeling of relative safety. The German government made a small grant available to the missionaries, on condition that German was taught and used as the medium of instruction at the missionary schools instead of Dutch, as had previously been the case. During the German occupation the need for schools for immigrant German children arose. Several schools were established with German as the medium of instruction. There were at that stage a number of Afrikaans speaking farmers as well as English speaking residents, whose children had to attend the schools established by the Germans and where they had to be taught through the medium of German. This caused conflict between the different White language groups, as each group felt that its culture and identity was being undermined. As a result, private schools for certain sections of the White population were established. When the South African forces conquered the territory in 1915, South West Africa became a mandate of South Africa through the treaty of Versailles. During the mandatory period the peoples of the country entered a period of peacefulness, stability, prosperity and security. Education progressed and an inspector of Education was appointed to investigate the educational system and the possibility of education for all the population groups at South West Africa. This investigation resulted in the publication of the first proclamation regarding education in 1921. Another proclamation followed in 1926 and in later years more educational laws, proclamations and ordinances followed, which were for the most part based on the original two proclamations or were supplementary to them. During the German occupation the Afrikaans speaking community entered into a language conflict that lasted for almost three decades. The Afrikaners insisted that their children be tutored through their mother tongue and by their own teachers. After 1915 when South Africa became the Mandator, the position was completely reversed and for decades the German speaking community pleaded for their children to be taught through the medium of German. Their pleas eventually proved fruitful and German schools were established. The Central control of education for the three main population groups, namely the Whites, Black, and Coloureds, was vested in the Department of education of South West Africa under the control of the Director of Education. It was only after 1958 that local control in the Non-White schools was granted to parents. It was, however, the duty of the Education Department to ensure that the prescribed policy of education was carried out. The control of Black and Coloured education changed hands at the beginning of 1969. It was felt that it would be more beneficial to both the Black and Coloured groups if Black education was controlled by the South African Department of Bantu Education and if Coloured Education was controlled by the Department of Coloured Affairs of the Republic of South Africa. Thus, since 1969 the South West African Department of Education has only controlled the education of the white inhabitants of the country. This study also illustrates the growth and expansion in the numbers of pupils of all the nations of South West Africa, the number of schools and of teachers. It was no mean task to comply with the demands that resulted from the extraordinary growth in education. Different types of schools became necessary as modern needs demanded and these were established according to the needs of the pupils. In order to provide teachers at the same rate in which the number of pupils and schools expanded, proved to be a further problem and a formidable task. Every possible effort was made to equip the schools with well qualified and well trained teachers as the demands increased. Other factors, namely differentiated education, community schools, parent participation, teaching through the mother tongue, development of orthographies for the different Black languages, the demands made by the United Nations, the intervention of other countries and tile new dispensations in South West Africa all added to make education a formidable task.

Botha, Cornelis Petrus. "Simulation of the human energy system / Cornelis Petrus Botha." Thesis, North-West University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9623.

Full text
Abstract:
Preface - Biotechnology is generally accepted to be the next economical wave of the future. In order to attain the many benefits associated with this growing industry simulation modelling techniques have to be implemented successfully. One of the simulations that ne' ed to be performed is that of the human energy system. Pharmaceutical companies are currently pouring vast amounts of capital into research regarding simulation of bodily processes. Their aim is to develop cures, treatments, medication, etc. for major diseases. These diseases include epidemics like diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, stress, hypertension, etc. One of the most important driving forces behind these diseases is poor blood sugar control. The blood glucose system is one of the major subsystems of the complete human energy system. In this study a simulation model and procedure for simulating blood glucose response due to various external influences on the human body is presented. The study is presented in two parts. The first is the development of a novel concept for quantifying glucose energy flow into, within and out of the human energy system. The new quantification unit is called ets (equivalent teaspoons sugar). The second part of the study is the implementation of the ets concept in order to develop the simulation model. Development of the ets concept - In the first part of the study the ets concept, used for predicting glycaemic response, is developed and presented. The two current methods for predicting glycaemic response due to ingestion of food are discussed, namely carbohydrate counting and the glycaemic index. Furthermore, it is shown that it is currently incorrectly assumed that 100% of the chemical energy contained in food is available to the human energy system after consumption. The ets concept is derived to provide a better measure of available energy from food. In order to verify the ets concept, two links with ets are investigated. These are the links with insulin response prediction as well as with endurance energy expenditure. It is shown that with both these links linear relationships provide a good approximation of empirical data. It is also shown that individualised characterisation of different people is only dependent on a single measurable variable for each link. Lastly, two novel applications of the ets concept are considered. The first is a new method to use the ets values associated with food and energy expenditure in order to calculate both short-acting and long-acting insulin dosages for Type 1 diabetics. The second application entails a new quantification method for describing the effects of stress and illness in terms of ets. Development of the blood glucose simulation model - The second part of the study presents a literature study regarding human physiology, the development for the blood glucose simulation model as well as a verification study of the simulation model. Firstly, a brief overview is given for the need and motivation behind simulation is given. A discussion on the implementation of the techniques for construction of the model is also shown. The procedure for solving the model is then outlined. During the literature study regarding human physiology two detailed schematic layouts are presented and discussed. The first layout involves the complex flow pathways of energy through the human energy system. The second layout presents a detailed discussion on the control system involved with the glucose energy pathway. Following the literature review the model for predicting glycaemic response is proposed. The design of the component models used for the simulations of the internal processes are developed in detail as well as the control strategies implemented for the control system of the simulation model. Lastly, the simulation model is applied for glycaemic response prediction of actual test subjects and the quality of the predictions are evaluated. The verification of the model and the procedure is performed by comparing simulated results to measured data. Two evaluations were considered, namely long-term and short-term trials. The quality of both are determined according to certain evaluation criteria and it is found that the model is more than 70% accurate for long-term simulations and more than 80% accurate for short-term simulations. Conclusion - In conclusion, it is shown that simplified simulation of the human energy system is not only possible but also relatively accurate. However, in order to accomplish the simulations a simple quantification method is required and this is provided by the ets concept developed in the first part of this study. Some recommendations are also made for future research regarding both the ets concept and the simulation model. Finally, as an initial endeavour the simulation model and the ets concept proposed in this study may provide the necessary edge for groundbreaking biotechnological discoveries.

This research has as methodology the use of Mauritus Cornelius Escher’s works for the construction of knowledge of geometry through the production of kaleidocicles, associating the interdisciplinarity between art and mathematics. The proposal suggests that the provision of didactic resources facilitates the understanding and visualization of the geometric elements, simplifying the teaching-learning process in order to awaken, encourage and give meaning to the study of geometry to students. The application of the research occurred in a qualitative way with students of the 3rd year of high school, in the city of Ceilândia-DF, where a project of four meetings was carried out in which the students were able to produce in a few steps previously developed mosaics in the M. C. Escher style, taking into account all geometric processes associated as geometric construction of polygons and use of symmetries, ending with the application of this pavement in the planning of the kaleidocicle and observing the necessary criteria so that the configuration of images formed in the kaleidocicle was symmetrical. At the end of the study, it was verified that the acquisition of Mathematics’s Foundations can become more effective when associated to other areas of knowledge, and that the insertion of concrete and playful objects arouse curiosity, pleasure and relevant motivation in learning, especially when the student participates in the preparation and construction of this material.

Abstract:
We investigate flows generated by bacteria near boundaries which are ubiquitous in biological systems. A bacterium such as \textit{Escherichia coli} is equipped with a number of rotary motors on its surface. Every motor has a helical flagellum attached to it and by rotating these motors the bacterium can move the fluid. We consider these flows in four different systems. Firstly, we explore a chiral flow which is always in the clockwise direction (when viewed from above) ahead of a dense suspension of bacteria on a moist surface. We quantitatively test a hypothesis that this flow is due to the action of cells stalled at the edge of a colony which extend their flagella outwards, moving fluid over a substrate. The model provides insight on the flagella orientations and their spatial distributions. Secondly, inspired by experiments which proposed to use confined bacteria in order to generate flows near surfaces, we develop a theoretical model of this fluid transport using a superposition of fundamental flow singularities. The rotation of a helical bacterial flagellum induces both a force and a torque on the surrounding fluid, both of which lead to a net flow along the surface. We investigate the optimal helical shapes to be used as micropumps near surfaces and show that bacterial flagella are nearly optimal. Thirdly, we build a theoretical model on a reorientation of peritrichous bacteria at the edge of a liquid drop on a Petri dish. Bacteria are more likely to turn clockwise because of the interaction between counterclockwise rotating flagella and boundaries which causes them to self-organise and circle clockwise (when viewed from above) around the outer edge of the colony. Finally, motivated by problems in biological physics occurring near corners, we derive the asymptotic behaviour for the Stokeslet (a flow due to a point force at low Reynolds number) both near and far from a corner geometry by using complex analysis on a known double integral solution for corner flows. We analyse flows in acute, obtuse and salient three-dimensional corners. We also use experiments on beads sedimenting in corn syrup to qualitatively test our results. The fundamental understanding of Stokes flows near boundaries is important for future developments in biophysics and bioengineering including applications to bacterial micropumps, steering microswimmers near corners, and preventing biofilm formation.

Abstract:
The unit trust industry in South Africa is in a growth phase. The competition for market share is becoming more intense and the companies need innovative ideas and optimization of there marketing mix to expand market share. The primary goal of this study was to establish the importance of the expanded marketing mix for independent insurance brokers in their decision making when recommending an investment in equity unit trusts to their clients. Independent insurance brokers were selected for this study because they hnction independently and are not bound to market a certain companies unit trusts. The study investigates the marketing criteria through a literature study on the expanded marketing mix that included: product, facilities, processes, people, promotion and distribution. The Association of Unit Trusts regulate the investment costs. Costs therefor are fixed and cannot be manipulated. The independent brokers tested the criterion of the marketing mix to see which criteria were the most important in affecting decision-making. The most important criteria were return on investment and the skill of the portfolio managers. The least important criteria were recognition of the brokers achievement and visits from the corkultant. The recommendation to companies managing unit trust is: to maintain a healthy balance between the elements of the expanded marketing mix because .the brokers evaluate all of the elements as important; product is the most important marketing element of the marketing mix. Portfolio managers must be capable and the image of the portfolio manager must be developed and promoted; distribution and access to computerized information are also very important; and all aspects of service delivery, marketing material and responds to inquiries are also rated as important criteria to the brokers.

CAPES
Given the increasing lack of interest in studying mathematics by elementary school students, the author found himself in need to develop a text that would make the students realize and understand some basic concepts of geometry and its relation to art, as well as display various applications in real world. This work is based on the construction of types of tiles that can be built with regular polygons and show how to make abstract gures self dockable from these mosaics. We show practical work that the author applied in public schools in Brasília Distrito Federal for the past 15 years. They have been properly recorded and evaluated with the appropriate mathematical rigidity, always seeking a connection between the content data in the classroom and the practices suggested in concrete work. Finally they will be shown the techniques used by MC Escher for building mosaics from the same regular polygons and the possibility of getting them from dierent regular polygons made up of mosaics.

Abstract:
In this thesis we take a close look at the paper CMC Capillary Surfaces at Reentrant Corners [33] a central feature of which is the question of when does the "central fan" of radial limits exist for a capillary graph in a vertical cylinder Ω × R ⊂ R3. The geometry of our cylinder will be examined under the condition that a non-convex (reentrant) corner P ∈ ∂Ω is present in the domain, the existence of said reentrant corner at O makes the determination of the continuity (i.e. the behavior of the radial limits at O) of the solution problematic. Given that continuity is equivalent to the existence of a "central fan" of radial limits under particular conditions, the determination of necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a central fan is a very important open question in the mathematical theory of capillarity. A secondary objective is to ascertain the feasibility of certain computations to develop insight into (and perhaps conjectures about) solutions of a boundary value problem for a class of non linear elliptic partial differential equations.

Abstract:

Metod: Försökspersonerna bar kontaktlinserna under dagtid i minst 15 dagar.

Following the thoughts of Martin Heidegger, we intend to expose the risks and deficiencies of the ordinary understandings of language and technique as well as to offer, as an alternative, a path to the origin of these problems, where the essential dwells. The origin of both is, at any point in time, already obstructed by a dominating experience - the modern technique. The modern technique submits language to it`s control and utility yearnings. By comprehending what modern technique is, we will be able to clear the path to the essence of technique and language. We must understand what technique is in order to revise what production is. Where language and technique meet, men do not get lost in alienated and arbitrary occupations, but are free for a senses production committed with what is necessary.

The Heegaard Floer hat invariant is defined on closed 3-manifolds, with a related invariant for 4-dimensional cobordisms, forming a 3+1 topological quantum field theory. Bordered Heegaard Floer homology generalizes this invariant to parametrized Riemann surfaces and to cobordisms between them, yielding a 2+1 TQFT. We discuss an approach to synthesizing these two theories to form a 2+1+1 TQFT, by defining Heegaard Floer invariants for Lefschetz fibrations with corners.

Cherniawsky, Josef Yuri. "Rotating flows around sharp corners and in channel mouths." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25581.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines buoyancy driven steady flows in mouths of sea straits and around coastal protrusions. At high latitudes, the Coriolis force keeps these currents banked against the coast even around relatively sharp re-entrant (convex) corners with radii of curvature that are comparable to the width of the current. On the other hand, if the radius of curvature of the corner is much smaller than the width of the current, the current may leave the coast at the apex of the corner. A central part of the thesis is the solution of the nonlinear problem of a steady inviscid reduced gravity flow in a wedge, 0<θ<π/a (with a>l/2), around a sharp corner on an f-plane. An exponential upper layer upstream depth profile, h=Hexp(-x/X) (where x and X are the offshore distance and the current width scale, respectively), is combined with conservation of potential vorticity, Bernoulli and transport equations. The resulting nonlinear equations are expanded in a Rossby number ∈=V/fX (where f is the Coriolis parameter and V is the upstream boundary value of velocity). The 0(1) and 0(∈) equations are solved. First, they are simplified via transformations of the transport streamfunction variables: ⍦₀=p⁴ʹ³ and ⍦₁=2p¹ʹ³q. By modifying the results of Bromwich's (1915) and Whipple's (1916) diffraction theory, the 0(1) solution is expressed in a compact integral form, [formula omitted] The 0(∈) contribution q is calculated using an approximate Green's function method. The wedge of an angle 3π/2 (a=2/3) is used as an example to show details of the solution. The results exhibit the relative importance of the centrifugal, Coriolis and pressure gradient forces. Centrifugal upwelling (surfacing) of the interface occurs very close to the apex. For a rounded re-entrant corner, the upwelling is important only if the radius of curvature is much smaller than the lateral scale X. liorever, for re-entrant corners, the flow is supercritical within an arc, whose size depends upon the Rossby number and the angle of the wedge. Using two or more corner solutions, plausible flow streamlines can be generated in more complicated domains, as long as no two corners are closer than the Rossby radius of deformation. This procedure is illustrated with two examples: (a) circulation in a channel mouth and (b) flow around a square bump in a coastline. Finally, baroclinic circulation is modeled for boundaries that approximate coastlines near the mouth of Hudson Strait.
