Marshall, Bennie Lee Davis. "Empirical foundations: the core competencies of registered nurse graduates." W&M ScholarWorks, 1999. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539618544.

Abstract:
Rising health care costs, introduction of new technologies, changing societal demographics and changes in reimbursement policies and practices are some of the forces creating an urgent need for a more efficient and effective health care delivery system. With the growth of managed care and the delivery of health care increasingly in community-based settings, the roles and responsibilities of health care personnel, especially nurses are also changing.;The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify the knowledge, skills, and abilities graduates of basic nursing education programs need, upon entry to practice, to function across work settings. Nursing staff, nurse executives and nursing faculty within the Commonwealth of Virginia were surveyed. their perceptions of required competencies were compared and contrasted.;Although faculty rated Critical Thinking/Problem Solving and Psychosocial Skills significantly more important than did nursing staff and nurse executives, there was general consensus among the three groups regarding the core competencies for new graduates. When comparing acute care, long term care and community-based health care settings, there were no statistically significant differences in the core competencies identified by nurses from these settings. Five competency constructs, representing 19 competencies, were identified as essential for new graduates. Also, respondents identified six additional competencies. Further study is needed to empirically confirm the identified competencies. It is anticipated that these research findings will be used by nursing faculty for curricula design and revision. In addition, staff development educators and continuing education providers may also use the findings for design of orientation and career development programs.

Haughey, Laura. "Practical proprioception : an examination of a core physiological foundation for physical performance training." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2013. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/18064/.

Full text
Abstract:
Proprioception is both the means by which people naturally have a pre-reflective awareness of their bodies, and the mechanism by which performers (and others) can develop advanced levels of bodily awareness in the service of physical skill and psychophysical fluency. These two qualities are amongst the most important for contemporary performers, and this thesis demonstrates how an understanding of proprioception and its enhancement provides a strong foundation for performance training. The original contribution to knowledge in this thesis is to cross epistemological boundaries and bring the scientific research, theory and discourse to the field of actor training, where previously this has not been done. This thesis synthesises theories and definitions of proprioception to provide a clear and comprehensive overview, establishes the functions that proprioception performs, maps relationships between proprioception and related terms and concepts, and argues that proprioception provides a comprehensive model for a core physiological foundation for physical performance training. The research questions under investigation are ‘Can proprioception in physical performers be improved and if so, how will increased proprioception be of benefit to the performer?’ Two research studies are carried out to investigate whether proprioception could be improved in physical performers after targeted proprioceptive training. The studies also explore what benefits the performers accrued during the training and how improved proprioception manifested in their levels of performance. The studies show that proprioception can be improved in performers after participating in proprioceptive training, and demonstrate, explore and evidence that this improvement brings an enhancement in physical performance. Methodologically, an approach is proposed to evaluate training practices which is based in a practice led research paradigm. This research is of interest to actors who use their bodies for specialist skilled movement in training and performance and who undertake a physical approach to their work, and particularly pertinent to actor trainers, providing a rationale to inform, support and enhance training methodologies.

Harris, Jason F. "Core foundations, algorithms, and language design for symbolic computation in physics." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Physics, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6073.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents three contributions to the field of symbolic computation, followed by their application to symbolic physics computations. The first contribution is to interfacing systems. The Notation package, which is developed in this thesis, allows the entry and the creation of advanced notations in the Mathematica symbolic computation system. In particular, a complete and functioning notation for both Dirac's BraKet notation as well as a full tensorial notation, are given herein. The second part of the thesis introduces a prototype based rule inheritance language paradigm that is applicable to certain advanced pattern matching rewrite rule language models. In particular, an implementation is presented for Mathematica. After detailing this language extension, it is adopted throughout the rest of the thesis. Finally, the third major contribution is a highly efficient algorithm to canonicalize tensorial expressions. By an innovative technique this algorithm avoids the dummy index relabeling problem. Further algorithmic optimizations are then presented. The complete algorithm handles linear symmetries such as the Bianchi identities. It also fully accommodates partial derivatives as well as mixed index classes. These advances in language and notations are extensively demonstrated on problems in quantum mechanics, angular momentum, general relativity, and quasi-spin. It is shown that the developments in this thesis lead to an extremely flexible, extensible, and powerful working environment for the expression and ensuing calculation of symbolic physics computations.

Abstract: Eugenics: heterogeneous and complex: since the conception of the term with Francis Galton in the 18th century, until the advent of the nazism, its more radical expression, the movement presented different characteristics. In this work, we try to observe another side of the worldwide movement: the peculiarity of the Brazilian eugenics by defending the regeneration of a nation, that was not condemned by the climate or the race, but was sick. In this context we take a new element: the presence of the Rockefeller Foundation. Our argument is based on the fact that in the two first decades of the 20th century, eugenics in Brazil meant sanitation and hygiene. The Rockefeller Foundation was a leader in the field of public health, specially in things related to sanitation and in fighting against diseases that were devastating the urban as much as the rural areas. The coming of the north american Foundation to Brazil was marked by negotiation, since the country had a medical tradition that was increasing by that time. At the same time we claim the idea that the Foundation was also "captured" by the Brazilian eugenics that in this period was confounded with public health.
The grounding constitutional right turns out to be an effective way to reach a correct/adequate answer to a decision and by also being the condition that enables the decision validation. It is through Hermeneutics together with the analysis of the substantial case that a correct/adequate decision to it can be reached. The interpretation of the norm is not up to the user being this the reason why the decisions ofthe substantial cases prescind from the Hermeneutics reading in order to have the correct understanding and enforcement of the law since the correct answer will only take place at the substantial case. The right decision at the substantial case must be based on law as integrity aside the discretion of the taker, who would be able to decide according tohis subjectivity by using the creative power given by the related discretion power. This is the crucial point of the foundational problem and its reasons why it turned into the citizen ́s fundamental right at the scope of welfare State and also as the fundamental duty of the judge/court. Hence, democracy will be inherently linked to the decision taking control. foundation does not mean any foundation since it cannot be given any meaning at a certain text.. The decision originated at philosophical hermeneutics reveals its entirely anti discretional side leading the correctanswer to the substantial case. The decision must show the criteria used so that it highlights its correction and also provide the direction for the future decisions. The lack of foundation promotes the absence of decisional criteria inasmuch as it hinders an external controlof the decisions. Thus the foundation as a means of the citizen ́s assurance, which is also restricting of the judger is essential garantee.

Abstract:
This research investigates the employment of personification as a discursive strategy of cultural journalism, taking as object the texts about the Iberê Camargo Foundation published in national and international press. It departs from the perspective that journalism is an important place for the production of meaning around contemporary values, including a significant part of knowledge built on art and culture. The timely approach of collecting data on empirical material encompasses the seven initial months of 2008, which includes the period prior and subsequent to the inauguration to the new building of the Foundation. We identified a strong presence of a personalized discursive strategy, through Discourse Analysis, how meaning around contemporary art and on the contemporary museum is constructed departing from the image of Álvaro Siza, the architect which designed the Foundation building. The consolidated corpus is comprised by 11 texts, in which it is analyzed 116 discursive sequences pertaining to the central issues of the argument. The conclusion is that personalizing creates four predominant stances of meaning on art (“the artist,” “the foreigner”, “the professional” and “the human being”) and two stances of meaning predominantly on the museum (“the museum as an art work” and “the organic museum”).

Abstract:
Secondary teachers of students with extensive support needs are tasked with helping their students prepare for successful post-secondary outcomes by setting and making progress toward meaningful goals related to self-determination, social and communication skills, and other individualized needs. Federal law also mandates that teachers provide academic core content instruction that is aligned with grade level standards, and recent federal rulings (e.g., Endrew v. Douglas County) have highlighted the need for instruction to be specially designed based on the unique needs of individual students with disabilities. The impact of standards-based instruction on the adult lives of individuals with extensive support needs is yet to be seen, but increased academic opportunities will provide an increased level of skills over prior generations. One way educators can meet the unique individual needs of their students is to integrate transition skills and goals within academic instruction. This presentation will provide guidance to educators on how to ensure academic core content instruction is personally relevant for secondary students with extensive support needs in the areas of literacy, mathematics, and science.

This study has been done in order to examine which type of pile, pile driving- and waterproofing methodsare most suited for an existing building. A building that will undergo an extensive reinforcement of itsfoundation. The study has been made in regard to the following conditions:● Different types of clay soil (Cohesion soil)● Underlying rock structure with heavy incline (8° slope)● Sensitive environment for vibrations and ground displacements● Limited accessibility (Room and maximum weight)● Compressive and tensile forces● Pool (Water environment)To answer the questions of statement a scientific literature study, interview with a foundation expert, calculations in sizing, but also time and cost analysis has been conducted. A site visit to an object ofreference, Nya Krav Himmerfjärdsverket, occurred where a reconstruction of an existing building withextensive work of reinforcement to its’ foundation was in progress. The steel pipe pile with anchor and steel core pile are the best pile types in such conditions as compressiveand tensile forces, clay soil with underlying inclined rock bed, limited accessibility and sensitivesurrounding environment. Which pile type, pile driving- and waterproofing methods that are most suited forsuch conditions is different for each project. The steel core pile is more suitable for higher loads, rockstructures in incline and when verification of load capacity is not needed. At the same time the steel pipepile is more suited when the underlying rock bed is far below ground level, where you would need manypile elements and joints. In addition, the steel pipe pile is suitable for buildings with a complex loaddistribution, where a greater number of piles with lower load capacities is needed in order to satisfy this. The best pile driving method for drilling in sensitive environment is the water equipped down-the-hole(DTH) drill. This drilling method is gentle to surrounding piles in existing building. In order to minimise the risk of water penetration and then expand the life span of the construction, use ofa combination of different waterproofing systems is to prefer when waterproofing pile heads or pilefoundations.

The study, titled Generative programming as language and communication Executable code routine processes as an information transmission tool, proposes to investigate the context and the content of the aesthetic interface in generative communications in networks. The object of this study are the code/protocol concepts as means for new modes of reading and it is based on the methodological and conceptual presuppositions of J. Derrida (Grammatology), A.P. Galloway (Protocol), the ergodism of E. Aarseth, as well as on the elucidative and critical theories of P. Weibel, L. Manovich, M. Lovejoy, G. Beiguelman, and L. Santaella on the art of the code, on software art, net art, and communications and technology. In digital art, user interaction is the essence of the work; it depends on this for the work to have meaning, both that which was established by the artist and the one the interactor, or interagent, or fruitioner-operator will create. While in traditional media works of art remit us to contemplation, communicative action is indispensible in digital art: it is in the interactor s experience with the work that this takes place, an experience of interaction that requires real time feedback. After image manipulation, interactivity was the innovative factor in the use of computers in art.The reflection of this study implies in the possible identification of the principles for the Foundations of the Critical and Aesthetic Analysis of the Network Culture, in the relationship between the interface and interactivity produced by contemporaneous artists/designers. The aesthetic interface of network communications will be treated in the specificities of the cultural interface. I begin based on the development of a set of pieces I have been presenting, with specific characteristics of the foundations of generative art and algorithms as sets of processes to make calculations with reference to work carried out by Golan Levin, Giselle Beiguelman, Generator.X, Rob Myers, Olga Goriunova, Stanza, among others, to question the central concepts that drive this project, as well as the countless questions brought up by the production of art/design/communications of the network culture, particularly those that best represent the suppositions of post-modernity as the cornerstone of authorship, remixing, sampling, self-generative routines, and fractal complexity. The crossing of the theory of complexity and the systems explored by artists provide us space to analyze the context of generative art and its relationship with communication in networks

This study aims to examine some relevant concepts to an understanding of a philosophy of religion from the Søren Aabye Kierkegaard’s thought (1813-1855) as well as the interrelationship between them, taking as a central problematic relationship between particular human being and God. Although Kierkegaard's work is characterized by great complexity, this work rests on a conceptual axis capable of conferring a sense of unity to the whole of his writings: the relationship of the individual foundation in God in the existential process of becoming oneself. This procedure allows demonstrating the viability, from the standpoint of the science of religion, to read the construction of a philosophy of religion by Kierkegaard, from the conditions necessary for a human being effectively reach his individuality. The basic idea of this work is that, while every person is born as a human being, every person must become a self, an individual, because, according to Kierkegaard anthropology, individuality is not an a priori given, but the most specific human potentiality which can be accomplished only through the personal commitment. It corresponds to the highest human achievement in absolute dimension. Therefore, its possibility is linked to a relationship that God - the absolute - is its only grounding. Through this work, we can infer that Kierkegaard develops his own concept of religion that is not restricted to the cultic dimension or to a function of a social life. It is to understand human life as there is with God. The mode of existence in its necessary configuration according to the quality of the relationship established with God, is the fundamental feature of what one can understand to be the religion in Kierkegaard’s philosophy.

This dissertation aims to comprehend how community foundations promote coproduction of public goods. Community foundations are non-profit organisations that aim for a better quality of life in the communities they serve. They connect people and organisations to promote community development. Some of the characteristics of community foundations are (a) they have a board that reflects the diversity of the community; (b) they serve a defined territory; (c) they raise funds from a variety of sources and they are grantmakers; and (d) they seek to build endowments. Due to such characteristics, community foundations have potential to perform the role of convenors and community leaders, roles that indicate they are able to promote coproduction, an approach applied to public administration that consists of a large participation of citizens individually or organised in formal or informal groups in processes of creation, definition, implementation, control, and evaluation of public policies. In coproduction, citizens and public agents share roles and responsibilities. In order to comprehend how community foundations work to promote coproduction of public goods, a case study was undertaken with one Brazilian community foundation, Instituto Comunitário Grande Florianópolis (ICom). Two of the initiatives of ICom which involved coproduction were examined through the analysis of documents and by interviewing public agents and ICom s professionals that participated in the activities. The results of the research show that, in order to promote coproduction, community foundations (a) count on their reputation and history of work and achievements, and look for alliances that contribute to inspire trust in order to bring together other actors that improve the production of public goods; (b) use the influence of their board members; (c) have the ability to use their financial resources to produce results in the short term, building an environment of confidence among the actors involved; (d) define the focus of the initiatives and the public good/service to be produced, in partnership with local actors, and make clear the results to be achieved collectively; (e) community foundations show technical skills; and (f) they are able to conduct the mobilisation of local actors to be engaged in coproduction

With the promulgation of the 1908 s Federal Constitution and the development of the Children and Adolescents Statute in 1990, a phase of rights celebrations and fundamental guarantees to all citizens have started in the country. In the same way, rights that guaranteed dignity to children and teenagers have been designed, moving them from a legal object condition to a legal subject one. This work is directed to a share of the young population, to the adolescents who committed an offense and are concealed in the Units of the Centre of Socio-Educational for Adolescents Care CASA in the district of São Paulo and the execution of rights and fundamental guarantees. This dissertation starts with a brief history of the beginning of rights of children and adolescents, contrasting the teenagers rights to the Federal Constitution. Following this first part, there is a study of socio-educational measures, their nature and legal grounds. An approach concerning the Doctrine in the Integral Protection to the native right is also part of this dissertation. Finally, and perhaps more important, field researches take place and three hundred and sixty male adolescents who were concealed in eighteen Units in the capital are interviewed in order to inquire if the law is being applied in real life conditions. The main aspects observed in the research were: the socioeconomic profile and the educational formation, the aspects related to the routine in the units as part of a formal education, the professionalizing courses and sports, cultural and pedagogical activities, and, at last, the security aspect, discipline and the teenager s fall backs.

Abstract:
Observing the need for the presence of Religious Education in the school as a base for the holistic formation of the human being, provoked in us a motivation for the construction of this research which seeks, through a perspective of investigation through a bibliographic study, to show the importance of the presence of Religious Education. The main goal is to understand the current proposal of Religious Education in the school and its importance for the holistic formation of the human being. The historical and legal foundations of Religious Education in Brazil are observed based on a brief panorama of the reading of texts of authors who dealt with the evolution of the theme in the LDBEN and in the Brazilian constitutions from the beginning of the Republic, where one can perceive the historical roots of this intertwining of interests; after this we seek to understand the current proposal for Religious Education based on the 1988 Constitution. The legislation proves and presents the current situation of Religious Education in the public and lay space as an optional discipline. This thesis also presents the results of a research of the map of Religious Education in the State of Bahia. An analysis is made of the construction of religious knowledge based on the PCNER (Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais do Ensino Religioso [National Curricular Parameters of Religious Education]), making a parallel of the life cycles with the cycles of education and, of the communal interaction with diversity and new tendencies seeking to show that the school and Religious Education can be a space of understanding and respect for the other. The pedagogical and methodological foundations of Religious Education are also analyzed in terms of curriculum, teacher training and praxis.

In the past decades the flexibility and even the precariousness that occurred in the labor field, together with changes in the State’s obligations, affected directly the projects for expansion and universality of the actions and health services in Brazil. In Bahia, the proposal for a solution to the difficulties in settling and management of human resources for Family Health Strategy was building a state career to these workers. For this, counties of the State have approved laws to create a new juridical institution, the State Foundation for Family Health. The aim of this study was to analyze the strategies of job management of the State Foundation for Family Health, trying to understand its limits and finding ways to deal with problems like finding human resources, settling and qualifying workers to the Family Health Strategy. This research is mainly qualitative and has a case study. There is emphasis in documental analysis but also counts with interviews with actors involved with development and debate of the State Foundation. During the time of the present study, State Foundation was being built, what brought many methodological challenges. The results of this study bring a debate on the interfederate juridical institutional model of the State Foundation; explain the construction of a decision council, its possible actions and agreements with the management contracts between Foundation and counties; analysis of the specificities of this job management proposal, in which the mobility between counties, variable salaries, together with fixation factors of professionals in each county and a shared administration Foundation/ counties is the be developed. The complexity of these proposals face an absence of experience in the application of this model and also bring structural and institutional dilemmas that characterize the management of health in counties. So, one of the main challenges is applying these instruments of job management within a historical context of difficulties in the field.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the problem of building well-founded domain ontologies for reasoning and decision support purposes. Specifically, it discusses the building of legal ontologies for rule-based reasoning. In fact, building well-founded legal domain ontologies is considered as a difficult and complex process due to the complexity of the legal domain and the lack of methodologies. For this purpose, a novel middle-out approach called MIROCL is proposed. MIROCL tends to enhance the building process of well-founded domain ontologies by incorporating several support processes such as reuse, modularization, integration and learning. MIROCL is a novel modular middle-out approach for building well-founded domain ontologies. By applying the modularization process, a multi-layered modular architecture of the ontology is outlined. Thus, the intended ontology will be composed of four modules located at different abstraction levels. These modules are, from the most abstract to the most specific, UOM(Upper Ontology Module), COM(Core Ontology Module), DOM(Domain Ontology Module) and DSOM(Domain-Specific Ontology Module). The middle-out strategy is composed of two complementary strategies: top-down and bottom-up. The top-down tends to apply ODCM (Ontology-Driven Conceptual Modeling) and ontology reuse starting from the most abstract categories for building UOM and COM. Meanwhile, the bottom-up starts from textual resources, by applying ontology learning process, in order to extract the most specific categories for building DOM and DSOM. After building the different modules, an integration process is performed for composing the whole ontology. The MIROCL approach is applied in the criminal domain for modeling legal norms. A well-founded legal domain ontology called CriMOnto (Criminal Modular Ontology) is obtained. Therefore, CriMOnto has been used for modeling the procedural aspect of the legal norms by the integration with a logic rule language (SWRL). Finally, an hybrid approach is applied for building a rule-based system called CORBS. This system is grounded on CriMOnto and the set of formalized rules

Berg, Celina. "Building a foundation for the future of software practices within the multi-core domain." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/3539.

Abstract:
Multi-core programming presents developers with a dramatic paradigm shift. Where the conceptual models of sequential programming largely supported the decoupling of source from underlying architecture, it is now unwise to develop new patterns, abstractions and parallel software in complete isolation from issues of modern hardware utilization. Challenging issues historically associated with complex systems code are now compounded within the parallel domain. These issues are manifested at all stages of software development including design, development, testing and maintenance. Programmers currently lack the essential tools to even partially automate reasoning techniques, resource utilization and system configuration management. Current trial and error strategies lack a systematic approach that will scale to growing multi-core and multi-processor environments. In fact, current algorithm and data layout conceptual models applied to design, implementation and pedagogy often conflict with effective parallelization strategies. This disertation calls for a rethinking, rebuilding and retooling of conceptual models, taking into account opportunities to introduce parallelism for multi-core architectures from the ground up. In order to establish new conceptual models, we must first 1) identify inherent complexities in multi-core development, 2) establish support strategies to make handling them more explicit and 3) evaluate the impact of these strategies in terms of proposed software development practices and tool support.

Abstract:
Oncologic diseases are very prevalent and breast cancer is, among women, one of the most frequent cancers and with most mortality. The understanding of molecular processes and genetic changes related to cancer allows the development of specific therapeutics, which can change the therapeutic approach to patients. One way to have access to clinically significant tumoral genetic changes is by performing a Comprehensive Genetic Profiling carried through Next Generation Sequencing (a method used by FoundationOne® CDx). These genetic and molecular changes can evolve with the disease progress and are sometimes responsible for the emergence of mechanisms resistant to therapy. The study case shows the heterogeneity and the evolutionary capacity of tumoral cells and allows us to analyse in which way the knowledge of mutations within tumoral cells may affect our therapeutic approach. In this case, the disease evolution made us understand that, despite the markers evaluated by immunohistochemistry or in situ hybridization lead us to a preferential therapy, there are other alterations (detected with genetic analysis) which predict different reactions to the same therapy. Therefore, in the presented case, the genetic analysis enabled us to comprehend the reason why the tumour remains resistant and capable of inducing the disease progression, despite of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2) directed therapy. In this case, it was possible to detect a mutation where we could potentially act and this discovery changed the therapeutic approach of this case in particular. However, it was not possible to conclude if this therapeutic change was reflected in a modification of the disease course and an improvement of the outcomes.

The primary purpose of this study is to use the story of “Animal Manager” in the Democratic Foundations book series (children’s edition) to implement moral education curricula on the core value of “responsibility,” and analyze the processes and results of incorporating the thinking tools provided by the Democratic Foundations book series, as well as the moral cognitive development of students after the story instruction. This study explored the methods to enhance fourth grade students in the practice of responsible actions to cultivate good moral habits in students. The research period of this study was from late March 2010 to the end of June 2010, and the research subjects were 30 fourth grade students at an elementary school in Taichung County in the 2009 academic year. This study adopted the action research method. Based on the story development, four themes were categorized from the story, including “what is responsibility,” “how to decide whether to accept a responsibility,” “how to make a decision between conflicting responsibilities,” and “how to know who is responsible.” The thinking tools provided were accordingly used to engage in the instructional activities of story instruction and value analysis. After implementing instruction, methods such as observation, interviews, journals, questionnaires, literature review, and recording were used to collect data, which is then encoded and analyzed. Data from each instructional activity were used for reflection and interpretation while accommodating the research purposes and questions. The research results obtained are as follows: 1. The thought tools provided by the Democratic Foundations book series are suitable for constructing student thinking ability. 2. The selection of stories for the core concept needs to consider student living experiences, and there should be suitable conversion. 3. Through accommodation of the story instruction and instructional model, students are provided with a learning scaffold for thinking and practice, so that they can have the good habits of being responsible. 4. After students undergo the story instruction of “Animal Manager,” they exhibit positive expressions in responsibility perception and behavior. 5. Create a classroom atmosphere that is warm, trusting, sharing, and accepting, as this is beneficial to students enhancing their self-actualization. 6. Research partners that can impart knowledge without reservation and provide sincere critique is beneficial for the development of professionalism in teachers. 7. Value analysis method provides students with a definitive thinking structure, and is beneficial to the cultivation of their moral rationality. 8. Maintain communication and contact channels between teachers and parents, in order to assist in implementing moral education. Based on research results above, this study proposes suggestions for instructional practice, to serve as a reference for future research.

Monteiro, Tiago Filipe Castro. Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/19976.

Full text
Abstract:
This master thesis aims to understand the role of corporate foundations in Portugal and how these influence/mold the image that the public has of founder companies. Organizations in general and businesses in particular are living in an era of fast and continuous change like never before, forcing them to rethink and transform their management strategies and tactics and organizational methods, namely in social responsibility terms. In this sense, more than ever, we can observe the advent and development of numerous foundations linked to various economic corporations, that is to say business foundations. Indeed, the foundations have a major role in corporate social responsibility policies, either by the huge sums that they gather, by the impact on society or by the ability to channel added value in terms of identity to the founder company. In fact, if on one hand the foundations bring value to the founders when enhancing a better and closer relationship with the community, on the other hand it help to shape and improve the corporation's image. While the role of foundations is to contribute in an exceptional and particularly way for finding adequate responses to the challenges of modern society for sustainable development and for the common welfare, the truth is that the public, according to our study, persists in the disbelief of the genuineness of the social responsibility actions practiced by foundations. Such responses provide evidence of the work they still have ahead to do, particularly in the communication domain, in transmitting the message that, even though they are financed by companies, their social responsibility program is mainly due to their concerns with the well-being of the community in which they operate. In fact, this is fundamental if we take into account that the majority of survey responses pointed out that the company’s image improves when people believe/know that the company supports causes that contribute to the common welfare, through a foundation. In fact, if people reveal that the image they have from a company improves when they are aware that it is socially and actively engaged, for example through a foundation, then it is crucial to increase the number of people reached by the foundation communications about social responsibility programs.

Abstract:

Sustaining curriculum relevance and effectiveness, necessitates regular curriculum evaluation and adjustment in concurrence with the evaluation results. Special schools in South Africa have at their disposal their own · peculiar curriculum which was developed mainly for learners who are primarily mildly mentally disabled. For various reasons, the most important of which is that the majority of learners currently in special schools are not mildly mentally disadvantaged, the relevancy and effectiveness of this curriculum are questioned. The primary aim of this research was therefore to determine if the core curriculum for special education, which is applicable to the majority of special schools in South Africa, is relevant and effective. A secondary aim of this investigation was to develop a model for curriculum evaluation by means of which curriculum evaluators would be able to evaluate a curriculum from a literature perspective. With a view to founding this research theoretically, literature research was conducted into the foundations and components of the curriculum. On the basis of the research findings, the model for curriculum evaluation was developed. Two of the curriculum foundations that were disclosed by means of the research, were the learner and the community. By means of an investigation of literature and other relevant documentation, the demands made on the curriculum by the learner and the community, were determined. On the basis of these findings, criteria were developed by means of which the core curriculum for special schools was then assessed. When the above criteria were applied, it was found that in many respects the core curriculum for special schools did not completely comply with the demands of the learners and the community. The conclusion could therefore be drawn that the core curriculum for special schools are in general not effective and relevant enough. Proposals were made on how the core curriculum could possibly be made more effective and relevant.
