Full textIntroduction: Coronal microleakage caused by temporary restorative materials is viewed as one of the reasons for endodontic failure. Efforts have been made in recent years to create a temporary restorative material capable of preventing that problem. Objective: Compare in vitro coronal microleakage of an "experimental cement" and four temporary restorative materials used in endodontics. Methods: Class I cavities were made in 90 premolar teeth divided into 10 groups (n= 9) and evaluated at two time periods (1 and 2 weeks). The "experimental cement" was prepared and then coronal sealing of the teeth was performed with the experimental Cement, F (VOCO), Eugenato (MOYCO), Ketac™ Molar Easymix 3M (ESPE) and Coltosol® F. The pieces were submerged in India ink (Pelikan)for 1 and 2 weeks. Microleakage was evaluated on the interface dentin wall / temporary restoration using a stereo microscope (Leica Microsystems LAS EZ version 2.0.0). Measurement was made in millimeters using the software LAS EZ version 2.0.0. Results: Statistically significant differences were found (p< 0.05) when comparing coronal microleakage in the five temporary restorative materials according to exposure time in ink (1 and 2 weeks). Conclusions: The experimental cement had less microleakage than Coltosol® F and Ketac™ Molar EasyMix 3M (ESPE). However, none of the four materials was capable of completely preventing microleakage.

Full textObjective: To compare in vitro the marginal adaptation of ceramic glass porcelain single crowns made with three processing systems. Materials and methods: The present study was experimental in vitro. The sample consisted of 69 glass ceramic porcelain crowns manufactured with the following three systems: CAD-CAM, porcelain injection and powder condensation. For de measurement of the vertical marginal discrepancy, the crowns were photographed using a digital camera with a macroscopic lens of 100 millimeters. The images were imported into image processing software (ImageJ) and 52 points were randomly selected around the crown to measure the vertical marginal discrepancy. For each crown, the 52 measurements were combined into a single average marginal discrepancy. Kruskal-Wallis was used to test differences in the observed marginal discrepancies between the study groups. (p <0.05) Results: This study found statistically significant differences when comparing the three different processing systems (<0.001). The CAD-CAM system had a smaller vertical marginal discrepancy (53 µm) compared to the porcelain injection (85 µm) and the powder condensation techniques (113 µm). Conclusions: Statistically significant differences were found between the three study groups. Also, the CAD-CAM system had a greater marginal adaptation compared to the other two manufacturing techniques. Finally, the three fabrication methods used in this study had a vertical marginal discrepancy within the limit established by the American Dental Association (<120 µm).

This study compared some of the endodontic sealers sealing ability (AH Plus, Epiphany, Acroseal, Endofill and Polifil (a castor oil-based experimental sealer) using the active lateral condensation technique, through a bacterial test, during 64 days. One hundred bovine incisors were selected and divided into five experimental groups and two control groups (negative and positive ones). The teeth were cleaned and shaped by the step-back technique, then, they were filled with the endodontic sealers and stored in (100%) wet environment. The roots were impermeabilized with araldite glue, adapted into an eppendorf microtube and sterilized by ethylen oxide gas. The root/ eppendorf microtube was added to penicillin flasks containing 6mL of BHI broth kept at 37º C for 4 days to confirm sterilization. After this period, 400µL of Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 were inserted at the upper portion of the eppendorf microtube. Daily leakage was evaluated through the broth turbidy. The results were submitted to the statistical analysis (Kaplan-Meier method as well as Kruskal-Wallis´ and Dunn´s tests). AH Plus and Endofill sealers were statistically equivalent concerning the sealing property, showing less resistance to the bacterial leakage than Polifil, while Acroseal and Epiphany had similar and intermediate behavior, but without numerical significance when compared to the other sealers.

Full textThe aims of this study is to evaluate two different abutment screws designs, a flat head screw (FHS) and a conical head screw (CHS), making sure if different crown/implant ratio (CIR) result changes in the removal torque after mechanical cycling. Initially, the surface area of the FHS and a CHS was measured by digital image analysis of the screws in 3D SolidWorks Software. Forty sets implant/screw/abutment were used, the sets were divided into 4 groups: GROUP A: 10 sets with abutments 9,8mm height, simulating a CIR>1, fixed with FHS; GROUP B: 10 sets with abutments 6,0mm height, simulating a CIR<1, fixed with FHS; GROUP C: 10 sets with abutments 9,8mm height, simulating a CIR>1, fixed with CHS and GROUP D: 10 sets with abutments 6,0mm height, simulating a CIR<1, fixed with CHS. The sets were fixed in acrylic resin angled 30 ° to the long axis. The abutments were fixed to the implants by applying a torque of 35Ncm. The sets were mechanically loaded. The peak load was 100Ncm vertical force and each group was performed for 1,0x106 cycles. The preload and the postload reverse toque was measured with the digital torque meter and recorded. To analyze the results the methodology of ANOVA (significance level of p <= 0, 05) was used followed by Tukey multiple comparisons. In measuring the surface area of the screws, we found that CHS has greater contact area in the abutment/screw interface (4,16mm²) compared to FHS (1,76mm²). Evaluating the factors tested and p-values we have statistically difference between FHS and CHS (p- value < 0,0001), regardless the time of evaluation, the percentage of CHS reverse torque (90,6 %) is higher than FHS reverse torque (80,9%); CIR>1 and CIR<1 does not differ statistically (p-value 0,1203), although the percentage of reverse torque CIR>1 (84,6 %) is smaller than the percentage of reverse torque CIR<1 (86,8%) and the mechanical preload time differ statistically mechanical postloading time (p-value<0,0001 ), whereas the reversal torque in preload time (92,5%) is largest than reversal torque in postloading time (78,9 %). Based on the results and within the limitations of this study, we can conclude that the CHS outperform the FHS, as regards loosening, which features the CHS as a possible improvement in external-hex implants connections. It was also possible to conclude that the CHS design influences the reverse torque after the mechanical loading, being particularly suitable in a situation CIR>1, where the screw is most required.

The dental implants have been widely used for rehabilitation of partial and complete edentulism using fixed and removable prostheses. Despite the success rate and predictability, failures are reported and commonly associated with biomechanical complications. Among the biomechanical factors, an adequate proportion between the implant and superstructure dimensions should be established. However, there is little information about the influence of crown height and lever arm on stress in cortical and trabecular bone. Although the use of implants has increased, many patients are limited by insufficient bone height. Thus, some implant systems developed short implants to avoid invasive surgical procedures. Nevertheless, such implants present an inverted crown/anchored area ratio. The present study will be divided into two chapters. The first one will evaluate the influence of three pre-established crown heights attached to external hexagon implants on all structures. In the second chapter, it will be evaluated the influence of the same crown heights attached to external hexagon and morse taper implants on the stress distribution in bone tissue. Full textThe excellent mechanical properties of zirconia make it to be the material of choice for ceramic crowns and posterior fixed prostheses. However, problems still exist related to the chippings. The lack of framework support to ceramic veneer is indicated as a possible cause. This study aimed to evaluate through laboratory tests if metallic and ceramic framework with conventional or modified design show statistical difference in reducing mechanical complications, such as chipping or fracture of the ceramic veneer on receiving axial loads in marginal ridges of the first molar inferior crowns through the following null hypotheses: 1) the response to fatigue in marginal ridges will not increase the presence of damage to the crowns; 2) framework`s design will not modify the presence of damage to the crowns, regardless of the material used. Forty crowns were manufactured on standardized preparations and divided into four groups: group I (conventional framework Cobalt-Chromium), group II (modified framework Cobalt-chromium), group III (conventional framework Zirconia - ZirCAD IPS Emax) and group IV (modified framework Zirconia - IPS Emax ZirCAD). These crowns were subjected to cyclic loading in a fatigue machine and submerged in water (1.000.000 cycles or until the fracture - load range at 30-300 N). The initial load was applied on the mesial marginal ridge with indenter ceramic Lithium disilicate (IPS Emax Press), and after the end of the cycle, the distal alternatively. The cycling was interrupted at a prescribed number of loading cycles (125.000) and crowns were inspected for damage accumulation under a stereomicroscope. In the end, fractured crowns were submitted to scanning electron microscopy and crowns without fractures were embedded in epoxy resin and sequentially polished for the analysis of the damage. Each sample received scores according to the type of failure presented. Statistical analysis was carried out with Kruskal-Wallis test and multiple conparisons between groups were carried out with Dunn wed significant differences between groups, however there was no difference between the groups of the same ceramic systems. It was concluded that the first hypothesis was accepted and the second hypothesis was rejected.

Abstract: This study evaluated the failure probability of fully or partially porcelain / glaze veneered crowns, determining their failure probability with Weibull analysis. Sixty molars were selected and prepared for first molar full crown and divided into three groups (n = 20): Traditional -crowns with zirconia infrastructure covered with feldspathic porcelain; Modified - crown partially covered with veenering porcelain and Monolithic - Full countour zirconia crown. All specimens were treated with glaze layer. Specimens were submitted to mechanical cycling (100 N, 3 Hz) using a piston (Ø = 6 mm) until the specimens failure or up to 2 x 106 cycles. Every 500,000 cycles the specimens were inspected for the presence of flaws in stereomicroscope (10×). The predominant type of failure was cracking and chipping of the feldsphatic porcelain, followed by delamination and debonding . Weibull parameters (beta and eta), with two-sided confidence interval of 95 %, were respectively: Traditional - 1,25 and 0,09 E + 07 cycles ; Modified- 0,58 and 1,16 E + 07 cycles; Monolithic - 1,05 and 1,64 E + 07cycles. Traditional crowns showed greater susceptibility to fatigue, the Modified group presented higher propensity to early failures, and Monolithic showed no susceptibility to fatigue. Modified and Monolithic presented then highest number of crowns presenting no failures after the fatigue test. The three crown designs presented quite different behaviors under fatigue. The two modified groups presented less probability to failure after 2 x 106 cyles

Full textConcerns about elastic modulus (E) mismatch between indenter and ceramic materials during fatigue testing have generated controversy. We hypothesized that all-ceramic crowns will exhibit similar step-stress sliding contact fatigue reliability (hypothesis 1) and failure characteristics (hypothesis 2) when using high stiffness tungsten carbide (WC, E = 600 GPa) vs enamel like steatite (SB, E = 90 GPa) indenters. To evaluate the effect of indenters, a preparation for a full crown was made on a first lower molar. From this master die 42 Y-TZPveneered all-ceramic crowns and 42 tooth-resin réplicas were made. Crowns were cemented onto the aged (30 days) tooth-resin réplicas with self-adhesive resin-based cement (Rely X UniCem - 3M/ESPE, St. Paul, USA). After, crowns were divided into two groups according to indenter (WC or SB). Specimens were subject to single-load to fracture (n = 3 per indenter type) to determine the step-stress profiles (mild, moderate, and aggressive) and to mouthmotion step-stress fatigue-tested (n = 18 per indenter type). Two failure modes were determined (inital analysis [IA] and final analysis [FA]). For each crown, a new indenter was used and labelled accordingly for surface damage evaluation. Impressions from all crowns subjected to mild profile were taken following a pre-arranged number of cycles (0, 40k, 80k, 120k e, 160k), poured with epoxy resin and SEM evaluated to inspect the morphology and to measure the indented area. The use level probability plots of the fatigue data showed overlap between the 2-sided 90% confidence bounds. The calculated Weibull Beta (β) for IA was 1.99 and 1.67 for SB and WC, respectively, pointing out that fatigue accelerated the failure in both groups. This was not the case for the β values for the FA analysis (SB = 1.1 and WC = 0.72), revealing tha the load alone dicted the failure mechanism. Both indenters produced similar pattern of wear on crown surfaces. Fractographic landmarks showed competing failure modes, but partial cone cracks were the most dominant for both groups. The indented area measurements showed statistical difference between groups (SB vs WC) (p < .05). Overall, the WC indenter displayed the largest area than SB, except when 120k was taken into account. The more compliant SB indenter led to similar reliability and failure modes to WC (hypotheses 1 and 2 accepted).

Full textTo evaluate the fatigue reliability of monolithic 1mm and thinly veneered 2mm E.max CAD crowns. A preparation reduction of 1 and 2mm for a full crown was made on a first lower molar. The CAD-based preparation was replicated and positioned in a dental articulator for specimen fabrication. Monolithic 1mm lithium disilicate CAD/CAM crowns (DLM) and a 2mm lithium disilicate CAD/CAM with 1.5 mm thick at buccal aspect veneered with 0.5 mm thick of porcelain were compared to zirconia based (Y-TZP) and metaloceramic (MC) crowns. All composite dies were 30-day aged and all crowns were resin cemented to composite dies. After luting, all specimens were aged for 7 days in water and either single loaded to failure or step-stress fatigue tested. Loads were positioned on mesial-buccal cusp (n=21 for each ceramic system). Probability Weibull and Use level probability curves (Alta Pro, Reliasoft) were calculated (Best data fit QCP) and plotted. Crack evolution was followed and specimens were analyzed postmortem. Lower reliability was observed for Y-TZP group and no statistical difference was observed between MC and DLM e DLV groups. DLV group showed the highest characteristic strength (Eta). Fracture mode for Y-TZP group was veneer chipping without core exposition. MC fractures were mostly chipping with metal coping exposure. While the failure for DLM and DLV groups were bulk fracture. Groups DLM and DLV resulted in fatigue response of lithium disilicate comparable to MC and higher than Y-TZP.

Objectives: the aim of this study was to evaluate the displacement and stress inner distribution of the prostheses/implant/abutment screw set and surrounding bone, with prostheses presenting different levels of angular misfit unilateral through FEA-2D. Materials and methods: four mathematic models were made, representing metal prostheses in connection of the implant through abutment screw, inside bone tissue, determining 4 groups: Group 1 (control) prostheses fit on the implant; Groups 2, 3 and 4, prostheses with angular misfit unilateral of 50æm, 100æm and 200æm, respectively. It was applied a load of 133N with 30o angulation and off-axis at 2mm of long axis of the implant in opposite direction of misfit on the models, through finite element program Ansys. Results: with upper of angular misfit, the stress maps showed gradual increased of prostheses stress (1056N/mm2 at 2326N/mm2) and uniform stress distribution in the implant and trabecular bone. About the displacement, observed inclination of the set of 0.3101mm (control) at 0.3179mm in the group 4 due to loading and misfit. Conclusions: the lower of the unilateral contact between prostheses and implant proportionate the displacement of all set and the distribution and magnitude alterations of the stress of all the system, principally in the prostheses and abutment screw regions; as a general rule, the angular misfit unilateral of the 100æm and 200æm showed higher stress values in relation to the control.

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the fatigue life of zircônia crowns veneered with feldspathic porcelain. Sixty first molars were selected, prepared for full crown and divided into 3 groups according to surface treatment: primer (MDP); tribochemical silica coating (Rocatec Soft + silane); glaze (Vita Akzent + Hydrofluoric acid 10 % + silane). The veneering porcelain was applied respecting the anatomy of upper first molar. The zirconia inner surface was treated according to the group, cemented using resin cement. The specimens were cycled in sliding fatigue machine (200N, 3Hz), using a piston of 3.18 mm diameter, on the inner side of the mesial buccal cusp, until specimens fail or up to 2x106 cycles. Every 500,000 cycles, the specimens were evaluated for the presence of flaws in stereomicroscope (10 ×). To determine the probability of survival (reliability), Weibull analysis was performed, considering a two-sided confidence interval of 95 %. The predominant type of failure was cracking and chipping of the feldsphatic porcelain followed by delamination. Weibull parameters (beta and eta) for primer, silica coating and glaze groups were respectively 1,51 and 1,6.106 cycles; 1,50 and 0,739.106 cycles; 1,53 and 0,882.106 cycles. The reliability of all crowns decreased with time, but the crowns cemented with an MDP primer presented higher survival rates. Clinical Significance: The use on an MDP primer before cementation of a veneered zirconia crown can increase its tolerance to damage

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to conduct an histological evaluation of pulp rections of teeth after cementation of complete metal crowns with one of the following luting agents: zinc phosphate cement (ZPC) (Lee Smith, Vigodent) and two glass ionomer cements (Ketac Cem, ESPE, Vidrion C, SSWhite). Twenty seven sound bicuspids scheduled for extraction by orthodontic treatment were prepared for complete crowns, casts were made and luted with one of the above cements. Three, ten and thirty days after cementation the teeth were removed, split in two halves and the pulps detached from one of the halves, stained with H.E. and pulpal reactions assessed by optical microscopy. Results showed dissimilar inflammatory responses that were associated to the different cementing agents. For specimens of the ZPC and Ketac-Cem groups the inflammatory reaction subsided for 30 days. For the Vidrion C group only 2 out of 9 specimens showed pulpal inflammatory reactions. Therefore, regarding biocompatibility, best results were seen with the specimens ofthe Vidríon C group. The method allowed a quick assessment of pulp conditions when compared to the traditional decalcifiyng process. However, observations of dentin-pulp relationships could not be noticed

Abstract: This study evaluated the film thicknesses of two GIC cements (Vidrion C, SS WHITE, Brazil; Ketac Cem, ESPE, Germany) and one zinc phosphate cement (Lee Smith, TELEDYNE, USA), used for final cementation of complete metal crowns. Twenty-one teeth scheduled for extraction due to orthodontic treatment were prepared for complete metal crowns. Dies were relieved with 5 layers of die varnish spacer. The crowns were manufactured by a commercial laboratory (with standardized procedures as much as possible) and cemented first with finger pressure and later by occlusion pressure using orange wood sticks. Results submitted to an ANOVA test showed that all cements had a similar behavior showing no significant statistical differences (p<0.01). A film thickness analysis of 7 selected preparations sites, showed that only axial positions, presented differences between Lee Smith and Vidrion C cements, the latter presenting lower significant values. For other positions studied, the three cements showed no significant statistical differences (p<0.05). Technical exploratory analysis of data by a BOX PLOT graphic showed for the ZPC a broad film thickness value distributions (from the highest to the lowest values) related to type of cement and measurement values. For glass ionomer cement the graphic presented values concentrating at lower levels than zinc phosphate cement. This was still more evident for the Vidrion C cement

Full textAbstract: This study assessed the quality of cervical adaptation in full metal crowns, with a variation in: a) the type of cervical preparation- beveled shoulder, 135-degree preparation, 90-degree shoulder, chamfer and knife edge; b) internal surfaces of the crowns with or without relief; c) the types of luting agents and their commercial brands- Harvard zinc phosphate, Ketac-Cem glass ionomer, Durelon zinc polycarboxylate and Panavia Ex resinous. Initially, machined stainless steel models were made according to each experimental margin design. Stainless steel metal caps were prepared with or without a 30-micrometer spacing of their internal surfaces, kept away 0.5 mm of the cervical end limit; they were precisely fitted, making a set with exact adaptation and seating. The caps were cemented on the specimens by means of different luting agents , handled according to the manufacturer's instructions. Methods were developed to reuse the specimens. Precise measures were obtained by preventing caps from moving during measurements. The conclusions were: a) the best mean of cervical adaptation, similar to each other , was obtained in standard models with preparations : knife edge, 1350 shoulder and chamfer; b) the worst mean of cervical adaptation, similar between them , was obtained in standard models with: straight shoulder and beveled shoulder; c) there was a significant improvement in adaptation when the metal caps were cemented with relief in their internal surface; d) cements presented decreasing cervical adaption, in the following order: Ketac-Cem, Harvard, Durelon and Panavia Ex; and, e) the methodology used allowed work with positive values of cervical adaptation.

Full textThe Bolton anterior ratio should be considered in the orthodontic planning in order to excellent occlusion achievement. The aim of this study was to verify wether some factors could be related to Bolton s anterior ratio: upper incisors buccolingual thickness, upper incisors mesiodistal tipping, overjet and overbite, and if there is sexual dimorfism. Thirty-five pairs of dental casts with natural normal occlusion had been evaluated, proceeding from 27 females and 8 male Caucasoid individuals, aged between 13 years old and 17 years and 4 months (mean age: 15 years and 8 months). A digital caliper and a piece of ruler were used for attainment of the measures. The anterior ratio was 77,48% (SD±2,22), showing to be statistically similar to Bolton s, 77,20%, SD±1,65. Based on Pearson s test, just the overbite showed to be related to the anterior ratio. It was not found sexual dimorfism.(AU)

Full textThe objective of this investigation was to evaluate in vitro, the coronal microfiltration of two types of cements –zinc oxide-eugenol/silicone- using the obturation technique with lateral condensation. For this, 60 single-rooted teeth were used of recent extraction, to which the anatomical crown was sectioned to them; all the pieces were prepared crown-apical with gates-glidden drills and soon they were used Flex-o-file files with the step-back technique; the pieces were distributed at random in two groups: one of 30 pieces were obturated with cement sealant with zinc-eugenol oxide (ENDOFILL®) in conjunction with laterally condensed gutta-percha, and another group of 30 pieces were obturated with cement sealant with silicone (Roeko Seal Automix®) using the same technique. The samples were covered by varnish of nails in all the extension by the root, except in the coronal part and soon they were introduced in Chinese ink by 21 days for the entrance of the same one by passive filtration. The samples by fracture were sectioned to observe the coronal microfiltration of the Chinese ink, registering digital photographies of high precision. The coronal microfiltration was registered using the program Corel Draw X3. In order to analyze the data statistically, the test was used t-student with which it determined that significant difference between the training groups exists One concludes that the teeth obturated with the cement sealant with silicone displayed minor coronal microfiltration, in degrees and millimeters, that the samples obturated with the cement sealant with zinc oxide - eugenol.

Abstract: Aim: to verify the prevalence of lower arch morphology, upper central incisor shape and craniofacial pattern among young Brazilians with natural normal occlusion. The study also evaluated any association among these variables. Material and Methods: the sample consisted of 51 caucasian individuals featuring normal occlusion, with no history of previous orthodontic treatment, and matching at least four of six keys to optimal occlusion as described by Andrews. The craniofacial pattern was defined by two cephalometric measurements (SN.Gn and SN.GoGn). Lower arch and central upper incisor images were digitalized from plaster models. Twelve orthodontists evaluated every image. Agreement tests both for dental arch and upper incisor shape were performed using the Kappa method. Associations among variables were tested through the chi-square test. Results: oval dental arch form was found in 41.17% of the sample, square form in 39.22%, and triangular shape in 19.61%. Dental shape was prevalent as follows: oval (47.06%), square (31.37%) and triangular shape (21.57%). Forty-seven percent of the sample presented a brachycephalic pattern, 27% of subjects were mesocephalic, and 26% were dolicocephalic pattern. The chi-square test did not show statistically significant association among studied variables (craniofacial pattern, dental arch form and upper central incisor shape). Conclusion: the craniofacial pattern did not serve as a reference to estimate dental arch form or dental crown shape.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate both the pattern and the fracture strength of bovine teeth endodontically treated through metallic unitary crowns under the following experimental conditions: presence or not of dental coronal structure with 2mm in length; cervical beveled shoulder, chamfered and shoulder; and two methods of intraradicular retention, cast post and core and parallel threaded prefabricated metallic posts. Endodontically treated 120 bovine dental roots were fixed to acrylic resin cylinders by means of artificial periodontal ligament, and then submitted to the compressive strength, at 1350 and 0,5 mm/min, until reaching the fracture. The results (ANOVA/ DMMQ a=0,05) showed statistical significance for the following conditions: cervical prosthetic design (beveled sholder >=chanfer > sholder), intraradicular retention (prefabricated posts > cast post and core) and coronal structure (with 2 mm of coronal structure > without dental structure); It was possible to conclude that the mechanical resistance of the restored roots is correlated with the amount of coronary dental structure, the intra-radicular retention method, and the prosthetic gingival shape

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different treatments of the inner surface of crowns and different luting agents on the survival of crowns made of zirconia partially stabilized by yttrium oxide (YTZP) and porcelain. A first study was performed using finite element analysis, where we compared the values and the distribution of Maximum Principal Stresses (MPS) of flat and anatomical specimens, with variations in the anatomy of ceramic components (crowns composed of Y-TZP and porcelain, with and without contact point, with and without a modified design of Y-TZP supporting the porcelain). The geometries produced in CAD software (Computer-Aided-Design) were imported for a finite element analysis software. A punctual and vertical load of 200 N was carried out on the central node of the models. The MPS distribution was quite similar among the studied models with important stress concentration in the singularity zone. Considering the lack of standardization in the preparation of anatomical specimens for laboratory tests, the choice of the simplified model (flat) could be justified. In a second step, 90 flat preparations were machined in epoxy resin and received crowns with Y-TZP infrastructure made by CAD/CAM system and veneered with porcelain by the stratified technique. Six conditions were tested (n=15): for crowns cemented with Panavia F, four different treatments were evaluated (cleaning with isopropyl alcohol [PC], overglaze application [POG], sandblasting with 125 μm particles of Al2O3 [POA]; sandblasting with 30μm particles of SiO2 [PCJ]); for crowns cemented with glass ionomer cement (CIV) and zinc phosphate (CFZ), the inner surface were cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. The fatigue resistance was evaluated by the number of mechanical cycles required for fracture of the specimens through stepwise loads methodology. Samples were cycled for 5,000 cycles at 200 ...

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate techniques for adhesive cementation of glass fiber posts in different thirds of intra-root dentin, through the bond strength and evaluation of mechanical properties of the adhesive interface components. Forty extracted single-rooted human teeth were used in this study. After endodontic filling and mechanical preparation of root canal, teeth were divided into five groups (n=8), according to the technique adopted for adhesive cementation of glass fiber posts: Group 1: Single Bond 2 light-cured adhesive + RelyX ARC resin cement; Group 2: Excite DSC dual adhesive + RelyX ARC; Group 3: Adper SE Plus self-etch adhesive + RelyX ARC; Group 4: RelyX Unicem self-adhesive resin cement; Group 5: Set selfadhesive resin cement. The mechanical properties of Martens hardness and elastic modulus were measured in the structures of the adhesive interface in a DUH-211 digital ultramicro hardness tester (Shimadzu). Push-out bond strength was measured in a universal testing machine (Emic DL 3000) in different areas of intra-root dentin (cervical, middle and apical). The data of bond strength and mechanical properties were subjected to statistical tests of normality and analyzed by ANOVA and Fisher's test ( =0.05). The results showed that the mechanical properties of Martens hardness and elastic modulus of the adhesive materials and dentin substrate can be influenced by the interaction of the materials, as well as the depth of intraradicular dentin. The same phenomenon was observed in the push-out bonding strength test. There was a tendency of the apical region show the least values of mechanical properties, which could stimulate the use of more conservative intraradicular preparation

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fracture strength and failure mode of zirconia crowns in monolithic or bi-layer configuration after artificial aging. Thirty-two bovine incisors received crown preparation and were scanned for the manufacturing of Y-TZP crowns using CAD/CAM technique. Crowns were fabricated according to the following groups (n=10/group): PM polished monolithic zirconia crowns of 1.5mm uniform thickness; GM glazed monolithic zirconia crowns of 1.5mm uniform thickness; BL bi-layer crowns with 0.8mm zirconia core and 0.7mm of veneered porcelain. All crowns were cemented on each respective tooth with resin cement (RelyX Unicem-2, 3M-ESPE). After the cementation, specimens were submitted to artificial aging in a chewing simulator (2.5 million cycles/ 3Hz frequency/8kg) in artificial saliva at 37°C, then the samples were submitted to fracture strength test (Instron) at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. Two remaining crowns referring to PM and GM were submitted to Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), to measure the yttrium levels after aging. One-way ANOVA and Tukey¿s test (p=0.05) were employed for analysis of the results. The fracture mode was evaluated with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Monolithic zirconia crowns presented similar fracture strength results (PM= 3476.2N ± 791.7; GM= 3561.5N ± 991.6), which were higher (p=0.02) than the results for the bi-layer crowns (BL= 2060.4N ± 810.6). There was no significant difference in the yttrium content among worn occlusal surfaces (PM, GM) and undamaged surface in PM. Thus, the fracture strength of monolithic zirconia crowns was higher than bi-layer configuration

This study evaluated the failure probability of fully or partially porcelain / glaze veneered crowns, determining their failure probability with Weibull analysis.

Conclusions: For each clinical situation when one is faced with a rehabilitation with fixed prosthesis, it is important to determine the goals of treatment based on an accurate diagnosis and to select the most appropriate treatment, as well as the type of material to be used, so that the aesthetics, strength and durability are associated. The study of new dental materials has provided a better functional and aesthetic treatment to those who resort to restorative treatments crowns with metal-ceramic or all-ceramic. Thus, with the improvement and development of new techniques as well as the advancement of technology, allows us to structure increasingly similar to natural tooth structure. The ceramic-metal crowns or fully ceramic give us the ability to accomplish replacement of one or more dental structures, whether by partial loss of the teeth, using a crown reinforcement, or total loss of teeth, with the use of bridges or implants. During this revision will be described in detail the various properties of each type of crown, as well as materials and technique used in the CAD-CAM their clothing.

Full textThe odontologic porcelains have been out of the esthetic restorative materials those, which have developed the most in the last years. Traditionally, they are brittle and unable to bear structural deformations when submitted to stress. When used in the building of partial fixed prothesis, one metallic framework is needed to avoid them to fracture under occlusal efforts. Forces of compression enforced on a metal supported porcelain in a way, which is not possible to bend, they could be beared in high magnitudes. However, failures can happen normally revealing themselves through fractures, which demand the intervention of the clinician in order to evaluate the association of the restorative materials to porcelains. In this study na analysis has been made of the possible causes of fractures of the ceramics, the indicated repairing methods, the materials used for it and, the efficiency of the variables, which involves the restorative procedure of the porcelain. The aim was evaluate the utmost resistance to the forces of compression in repairs of fractures of porcelain made with a light-cured hybrid composite resin, using static loads and comparing it with the resistance of the nonfractured metal ceramic crowns and permanent natural human teeth, used as control group The results have shown that in the presence of the compression forces loaded to non-fractured metaloceramic crown and the natural tooth have not exhibited statistically meaningful difference. The repaired metaloceramic crown has exhibited less resistance than the non-fractured metaloceramic one. However, there has not been statistically meaningful difference to the permanent natural tooth
