Background Described by Schaefer in 1916, frontal cells have been implicated as a cause of frontal recess obstruction. In this cross-sectional study, we determine the prevalence of frontal cells and other anatomic variants and examine their relationships. Methods Coronal computed tomography scans of the sinuses performed from January 2000 to June 2001 were evaluated for frontal cells, other anatomic variants, and sinus disease. Of 1009 scans evaluated, 768 scans were included for data collection. Frontal cells were classified. Results In this population, 20.4% of individuals had frontal cells

Plain films of the paranasal sinus were the imaging technique most frequently used before the advent of computed tomography. With improved resolution, computed tomography imaging has become the standard for evaluating patients with disease of the paranasal sinuses. With the widespread availability of computed tomography scanning, patients are likely to undergo multiple examinations during the treatment of their disease. Concern has been raised over the radiation exposure to the patient, in particular, with regard to radiation-induced cataracts. The purpose of this study is to measure the radia

The paranasal sinuses are a group of four paired air-filled spaces that exist superior and laterally to the nasal cavity. The sinuses are considered to provide an immunological role along with mucus production and air humidification. These sinus tissues are susceptible to obstructive malformation, inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic processes, sometimes requiring surgical management. Surgical management has moved from open approaches to minimally invasive endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). This surgical approach, although effective, has a reported complication rate of up to 5%, with cerebros

Coronary artery disease is one of the most pernicious diseases around the world and early identification of vascular disease can help to reduce morbidity and mortality. Assessment of the degree of vascular obstruction, or stenosis, is critical for classifying the risks of the future vascular events. Automatic detection and quantification of stenosis are important in assessing coronary artery disease from medical imagery, especially for disease progression. Important factors affecting the reproducability and robustness of accuarate quantification arise from the partial volume effect and other n

Computed tomography imaging has revolutionised modern medicine and we can now study the body in greater detail than ever before. Cardiac computed tomography has the potential to provide information not just on coronary anatomy, but also on myocardial function, perfusion and viability. This thesis addresses the optimisation and validation of computed tomography imaging of the heart using a wide volume 320-multidetector scanner. Computed tomography coronary angiography now has diagnostic accuracy comparable to invasive coronary angiography. However, radiation dose remains an important concern. I

The objective of this work is to improve the diagnostic quality and reduce the radiation dose of computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) imaging by developing gating techniques based on signals derived from cardiac motion, rather than the currently used electrocardiogram (ECG), to more reliably trigger data acquisition during periods of cardiac quiescence. Because the ECG is an indication of electrical activity, it is a surrogate marker of the mechanical state of the heart. Therefore, gating based on a signal derived directly from cardiac motion using either echocardiography or seismoc

Abstract:
AbstractThe imaging methods for evaluating patients with acute spinal trauma has dramatically changed in the last decade especially with the development of thin section multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) and isotropic datasets that provide high-resolution sagittal and coronal reformats. MDCT allows for a comprehensive assessment of spinal column injury that has largely supplanted radiography except in the pediatric population. MRI has become the procedure of choice for evaluation of the spinal cord and surrounding soft tissues when there is a suspected SCI.

Context: Trigonocephaly is a type of craniostenosis due to the early closure of the metopic suture. His diagnosis is eminently clinical, but imaging tests are essential. The recommended treatment is surgical and should preferably be performed at the age of 3 to 9 months. Association between craniosynostosis and neural tube defect (NTDs) is rare and was sometimes considered as mere coincidence. However, Martinez-Lage et al. hypothesize that there is a causal relationship between these malformations since myelomeningocele reduces intracranial pulse pressure, which stimulates the early closure of
