Abstract:
The American College of Sports Medicine has published formulae that are widely used to predict functional aerobic capacity for any treadmill speed and grade combination. However, it has been demonstrated that these formulae overpredict oxygen consumption (V̇O₂) for patients with coronary artery disease as well as for apparently healthy individuals. To study this, we measured V̇O₂, ventilation (V̇E), and respiratory exchange ratio (R) responses in 21 apparently healthy subjects (AH) and 16 coronary artery diseased subjects (CAD) during a modified Balke protocol. <p>Controversy exists regarding the effects of beta-blocker medications on functional capacity in cardiac patients and in the effects of disease-related impairments on cardiorespiratory dynamics during exercise testing. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the exercise responses of 26 subjects (ages 37-66 years) to a graded exercise test. Subjects were divided into three groups based on clinical status: apparently healthy (AH; N=8); cardiacs receiving beta-blockers (C-BB; N=8); cardiacs not receiving betaâ blockers (Câ NBB; N=lO).</p><br>Master of Science

Full text
Abstract:
This study sought to examine the exercise-induced ST-segment shifts, J₀ and J₆₀, attributable to ECG lead configuration, specifically to evaluate if ischemic changes are modified as a function of using the Mason-Likar lead system. Males (N=30) referred for diagnostic testing underwent a symptom-limited graded exercise test (SLGXT). ST-segment shifts, J₀ and J₆₀, measured as the difference from baseline to recovery minute one, were not significantly different in responses measured from two simultaneous complexes for lead V₅. In frontal lead II, differences were found in the ST-segment response

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the current CDC/ACSM physical activity recommendation, ("30 minutes or more of accumulated moderate-intensity activity, most if not all, days of the week") would improve women's health through a reduction ofcoronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors. Twenty-one sedentary females (ages 49 ± 7 yrs.) with one or more CHD risk factors underwent baseline laboratory including: resting heart rate and blood pressure, resting electrocardiogram, body mass index, bioelectrical impedance, skinfold measures, waist-to-hip, blood lipid profile, and V02max. Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Masters in Technology: Clinical Technology, Durban University of Technology, 2010.<br>Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the major causes of premature deaths worldwide. In South Africa, approximately 195 people die from cardiovascular diseases each day. The earlier coronary artery disease (CAD) is detected, the better the prognosis. Manns, Patricia J. "Physical activity, hormone replacement therapy, and insulin resistant coronary artery disease risk factors in postmenopausal women." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/32409.

Abstract:
Low physical activity levels and high serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD) in both men and women. However, postmenopausal women who take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may have increased risk of CAD because of HRT-related increases in serum CRP. There are two manuscripts in this dissertation. The purpose of the first manuscript was to determine whether higher physical activity energy expenditure was associated with lower serum CRP, independent of oral HRT status and body fatness, in 133 postmenopausal women. Decreased HRV was noted in coronary artery disease(CAD). The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of home-based exercise program on functional capacity and HRV in postmenopausal women with CAD. Methods and Subjects: Thirty-two postmenopausal women with CAD were recruited from one medical center, and assigned to an exercise group(n=16, averaged age 64.19 ± 5.86 years) or a control group(n=16,
