With the regulation of the designer as a profession, it has been proposed a series of discussions about the responsibility and the designer's role to its users. In this context arises the attitudinal design. The purpose of this master thesis is to analyze this design genre, drawing attention to the ways the new professionals deal with the perception and communication of the body. The main hypothesis is that by abandoning some dichotomies present in classic studies of ergonomics, attitudinal design began to engender, in fact, new attitudes not only from the relations between subject and object, but triggering new ways of life. The research methodology combines literature a few case studies. As theoretical foundation meets specific titles as the work of Lucy Niemeyer (2008), debates on "good design" proposed by Rams (1970), about the "design good" developed by Mizanzuk Portugal and Beccari (2013); and emotional ergonomics from Claudia Mont'Alvão (2008). The corpomídia theory of Katz and Greiner (2013) highlights the bridges with the field of communication and underlies the debate, particularly with regard to problematize the dualisms body-mind and reason-emotion, which surround the subject and not usually associated with each itself. The expected result is to collaborate with these debates, highlighting the importance of communication theories, little present in discussions regarding the design

Full textBody language has existed since the beginning of humanity. In the past, communication was based solely on gestures, postures, movements, among others. These days, body language has become a very powerful tool that offers organizations an improvement in their communication processes; however, it is very little used. In recent years, companies have been training employees in the sales area for greater performance in the management of their body language. However, the other areas have not shown any interest in them, so they have lost the possibility of improving their working environment and performance. In this paper we present topics that influence body language or kinésico system, among them, culture, language according to gender, training, effective communication and complement of verbal and non-verbal communication, with the aim of demonstrating that body language is a valid discipline for the best human management in organizations. To carry out the study, we have established a bibliographic research methodology for articles that are in quartile one and two (mostly). These have not allowed to identify and confirm the importance of body language in organizations.

Full textThe thesis focuses on olfactory communication involving individuals in position of interactants during "face to face" communication situations. I believe that wearing a fragrance is one form of communicative intent on what the communicating subject aspires to be. In the field of information and communication sciences, olfactory communication is studied in a theoretical context which mobilises resources from interactionism and ethnomethodology. Since wearing perfume appears to be a desire to communicate about our self, I try to understand better the processes of identity construction in conjunction with the self. However as the sense of smell is very intimate, for instance it refers to past olfactory experiences, the quality of a fragrance is a very subjective data. Therefore, my methodology was built according to a protocol based on the concept of interaction (Goffman) in order to handle different contexts of exchanges. The aim is to understand better what role scent plays in various situations of interpersonal communication.A qualitative survey was conducted on 35 subjects from two neighboring countries, Switzerland and France. Each in-depth interview is based on a projective test for which the subject is required to build a representation of a communicating individual according to a scent. The results show that since we cannot "reclaim" the perception of the other, we are forced to infer what he feels according to their behavior and our own experience. The subject infers information on the other he deems appropriate and relevant, based on his experiential background in relation with the perfume he smells: the odor becomes an information device that conveys previously encoded data. The perfumed individual is therefore a communicative device exposed to the nose of the interactant. The latter, receiving olfactory communication, infers the communicative intentions of the fragranced individual from the smell he perceives. The odor is a "moral marker" (Le Breton, 2006), revealing who we truly are as an individual, kindness smells good, everything dodgy "stinks." The thesis shows that men and women have different olfactory impressions about the same scents, that there are forms of correlations in terms of olfactory imagination from one individual to another, regardless of how old they are and where they come from. Some perfumes inspire more sympathy or even more ingenuousness than others in order to lead us towards building a social identity. However, others on the contrary can cause contempt and even disgust
Ghannouchi, Ben Salem Neila.
Full textThis study deals with praxis communication mechanisms that are at the heart of motor playfulness interactions that are formed in the practice of volleyball. This research perspective offers the opportunity to better grasp and understand the motor behavior of players that are shaping a social motor skills network revolving around cooperative and adversarial. From there, it seemed interesting to study the content of practicing volleyball both high level and at school. The joint communication network of sport is built on the frame of observable motor behavior of practitioners whose ease and hoped drive efficiency gain over the trainings sessions led by trainers / teachers. In this context, is the technocratic and traditional approach of Volleyball is preferred over the approach motor semiotic based on the studyof motor behavior of practitioners and the praxis communication? The search for efficiency in game situations accentuates this trend with educators and players in terms of their representations? To answer these questions and highlight the subtle network of motor interactions, we analyzed the matches of three populations from high-level sport, school sports association and physical education at school. These observations were crossed with semi-structured interviews with players and educators with a questionnaire based on Condorcet Method. Results revealed that within high level sports, motor interactions of players are based on praxis communication networks are richer within school and club volleyball, thus highlighting links of opposition and cooperation around diverse and under-privileged social motor skills roles. On the other hand, the level of practice at the school level, observed in the content of the sessions conducted by teachers, emphasizes the technical and physical aspects of volleyball. Furthermore, we note distinctions as to the representations and practitioners from their coaches and within three populations: for the first, mainly the focus is on the technical, tactical and physical aspect. As for the second category, in addition to technical and tactical aspects, organization and training of planning are emphasized to achieve objectives. The sportization practices such as have long advocated the educational purposes of official instructions (1990) in Tunisia, observed here, do not make easy the educational and teaching work in a volleyball motor semiotic perspective. Sports reference based on motor skills (body techniques) volleyball only hinder the success of praxis exchanges between students. We thus propose to build an original approach to teach school volleyball in terms of learning based primarily on motor skills semiotic

Badreddine, Wafa. "Communication Protocols in Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN)." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SORUS214.
Full textThe rapid advances in sensors and ultra-low power wireless communication has enabled a new generation of wireless sensor networks: Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN). WBAN is a recent challenging area. There are several concerns in this area ranging from energy efficient communication to designing delay efficient protocols that support nodes dynamic induced by human body mobility. In WBAN tiny devices are deployed in/on or around a human body, are able to detect and collect the physiological phenomena of the human body (such as: EEG, ECG, SpO2, etc.), and transmit this information to a collector point (i.e Sink) that will process it, take decisions, alert or record. WBAN differs from typical large-scale wireless sensor networks WSN in many aspects: Network size is limited to a dozen of nodes, in-network mobility follows the body movements and the wireless channel has its specificities. Links have a very short range and a quality that varies with the wearer's posture. The transmission power is kept low to improve devices autonomy and reduce wearers electromagnetic exposition. Consequently, the effects of body absorption, reflections and interference cannot be neglected and it is difficult to maintain a direct link (one-hop) between the Sink and all WBAN nodes. Thus, multi-hop communication represents a viable alternative. In this work we investigate energy-efficient multi-hop communication protocols in WBAN. Our work is part of SMART-BAN Self-organizing Mobility Aware, Reliable and Timely Body Area Networks project. In order to evaluate our communication protocols described in the sequel in a specific WBAN scenario, we implemented them under the Omnet++ simulator that we enriched with the Mixim project and a realistic human body mobility and channel model issued from a recent research on biomedical and health informatics. We are interested in WBAN where sensors are placed on the body. We focus on two communication primitives: broadcast and converge-cast. For the broadcasting problem in WBAN, we analyze several broadcast strategies inspired from the area of DTN then we propose two novel broadcast strategies MBP: Mixed Broadcast Protocol and Optimized Flooding: -MBP (Mixed Broadcast Protocol): We proposed this strategy as a mix between the dissemination-based and knowledge-based approaches. -OptFlood (Optimized Flooding): This strategy takes into account the strengths and weaknesses of the basic strategy Flooding. Optimized Flooding is a revised version of Flooding whose purpose is to keep the good end-to-end delay given by Flooding while lowering energy consumption with the simplest way and the minimum cost. Additionally, we performed investigations of independent interest related to the ability of all the studied strategies to ensure the FIFO order consistency property (i.e. packets are received in the order of their sending) when stressed with various transmission rates. These investigations open new and challenging research directions. With no exception, the existing flat broadcast strategies register a dramatic drop of performances when the transmission rate is superior to 11Kb/s. There, we propose the first network-MAC layer broadcast protocol, CLBP, designed for multi-hop communication and resilient to human body postures and mobility. Our protocol is optimized to exploit the human body mobility by carefully choosing the most reliable communication paths in each studied posture. Moreover, our protocol includes a slot assignment mechanism that reduces the energy consumption, collisions, idle listening and overhearing. Additionally, CLBP includes a synchronization scheme that helps nodes to resynchronize with the Sink on the fly. Our protocol outperforms existing flat broadcast strategies in terms of percentage of covered nodes, energy consumption and correct reception of FIFO-ordered packets and maintains its good performances up to 190Kb/s transmission rates. This research is part of the line of research New Technologies in Education of the Graduate Program in Education: Curriculum of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo. It aims to reflect on the creation of new ways in school for the integration of the body to the school curriculum in digital culture. This work focuses on the development and appropriation of the body as an important component of the education of the individual in the contemporaneity. Starting from Michel Foucault’s theory of the docile bodies and the bodymedia theory of Christine Greiner and Helena Katz, this thesis registers and narrates the search for an integration of the body with knowledge in Circus Arts classes at a private school in the city of São Paulo. The research transits and is based on the digital culture as context, as well as it articulates the use of technologies as a cultural characteristic of the student. The impact of body discoveries is recorded in the construction of social notions such as responsibility, autonomy, individual and collective limits. Simple and widely used body solutions in teaching the arts of the scene, such as turning upside down or perceiving the center of balance, the observation of one’s own corporal possibilities and the ones of the colleagues act as facilitators to work with themes such as violence, gender, socio-cultural awareness and creativity. The main results of the research were the discovery of possible ways to construct forms for the integration of the body with the school curriculum found during the observation of the Circus Arts classes, the identification of a fragmented look at the body in the national documents and the lack of awareness of the potency that such integration can have for a quality critical education

Full textIn this thesis, we focus on the study of the electromagnetic waves that allow the communication between two antennas lying on the surface of a human body. We use the wave propagation model of Norton with the notion of Somerfield attenuation function to model the attenuation in the case of propagation on flat surface. On the other hand, Watson’s model allow to studying the attenuation coefficient of electromagnetic wave that propagate around a disc or a cylinder. To generate a TM and TE wave polarization, the excitation sources used in a first step, are small elementary electric dipoles with a tangent and normal polarization. To refine the results, we propose to further investigate the polarization vector of the electric field during its propagation at the surface of a full body model, for different polarization and for different paths. Finally, various types of antennas were designed and studied in the goal of promoting the propagation of the surface waves and thus maximizing the link budget between antennas
Hoang, Thai Bang. "Infrared and visible wireless optical technology for body sensor connectivity." Thesis, Limoges, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LIMO0027/document.
Full textThis thesis is focused on the field of indoor optical wireless communication for health monitoring based on body sensors. The state of the art of optical wireless in the infrared, visible and UV domains as well as the analysis of health related systems using this technology have been provided. This helped to define the objectives and orientations of this thesis. We have studied the use of infrared technology for data transmission between a sensor worn by a patient and receivers located at the corners of a central lighting panel at the ceiling of the environment. A link in visible was used for the transmission of data from the luminaire to the patient carrying a smartphone equipped with a decoder. The main challenges were the robustness of the infrared and visible links with regard to patient mobility and the impact of the user's body due to the location of the sensor. The channel simulations performed using the Ray-Tracing technique associated with the Monte-Carlo method allowed determining the channel gain, which is the main parameter representing the performance. Due to the patient mobility, the analysis was performed statistically and taking into account different locations of the sensor on the body, from the ankle to the shoulder. The optimal physical and geometrical parameters for transmitters and receivers to ensure the best performance have been deduced. It has been shown that it is essential to model the presence of the body for both uplink and downlink. The overall performance of the system has highlighted the potential of fully optical wireless transmissions for medical surveillance based on body sensors. This has been partly confirmed by experiments carried out from infrared communicating sensor prototypes and commercial products for the visible link

Full textThis thesis deals with the performance of optical girelles communications for body area networks (BAN) as an alternative solution to the radiofrequency one, in the context of mobile healthcare monitoring. After presenting the main characteristics of a BAN using the radiofrequency technology, specifically in the UWB band, we explain the advantages of the optical wireless technology. Diffuse propagation based on infrared technology is then considered for BAN, exploiting optical reflections from environment surfaces. Several optical wireless channel modeling methods are introduced, and we consider two solutions for the link between two on-body nodes: a classical method named “one reflection model”, used to estimate performance variations, and a ray-launching method, used to take into account a great amount of optical reflections. Considering several scenarios, we determine the outage probability, and show that the diffuse optical wireless technology is able to achieve an on-body link, with the data rates and the quality of service required by health monitoring applications, for a transmitted power far lower than the limit defined in standards. Then, we evaluate the theoretical performance, in terms of error probability, of an optical wireless BAN, considering the optical code division multiple access technique. Finally, we show that a BAN using optical wireless technology is theoretically feasible, regarding a health monitoring application, and considering the mobility of the patient in indoor environment

Full textWith the third autism plan, the question was about the efficiency of psychoanalysis in psychological care to autism. A parallel was drawn between this and our objective to find further emergence of language by means of analytic ways, to the child precociously screening for risk of autistic development. The involvement of the body, when the child risks his life, was a moment of transition on that path. The question of the meaning appeared as soon as the child started emitting sounds : vocalization or verbalization, sense or nonsense ? What was amazing, was that the child was using signifiers, to such a degree that we may asks the question of the function of nonsense, for him. His progressive capacity has seemed to have given a boost. So Psychoanalysis appears as a rather economical means to improve the well-being of the child and his parents. But, perceptive symptoms are still being endured although the diagnosis of autism is nearly outdated. The quality of linguistic productions is neither like a play, nor like a sign of any involvement in the relationship. As a result, the task of the psychoanalyst is particulary marked with uncertainty and the attempt of elucidation. In that case, the Esther Bick method is advantageous. Because, we often tend to standardize. Concepts like « l'image inconsciente du corps », « l'intersignifiance », « le sujet psychanalytique », « rhameçonnage dans la chaîne parlée », « le stade du miroir », and their outlines were at the heart of our thought, with Tustin, Lefort, Houzel, Freud, Lacan, Rey-Flaud, Winnicott, etc
Turchet, Philippe. Thesis, Paris 10, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA100174/document.
Full textThis PhD thesis is part of the context of intercultural communication and is based on the analysis of a corpus of 184112 words (56 speakers, 13 nationalities), 9155 turns of dialogic words. It is a question of looking for one or more mimogestual indices of rupture of comprehension, in the absence of verbalization, in the silent speaker, during the interaction. The PART I, proposes a state of the places concerning the locating of the breaks of comprehension, in situation of exolinguism. PART II, Preliminary Experimentation (Methodology and Content Analysis), delineates 177 "text-blocks", in which breaks in comprehension occur. A mimo-gestual item, linked to a short and fast eccentric look (ERBR), often replicated, is taken. PART III is a first experiment that arises from preliminary experimentation. The independent variable (the verbal language) and the dependent variable (the mimogestuality), are reversed, to check if the breaks of comprehension, once reported to the corollary verbal criteria, are directly identifiable, starting from precise mimo-gestures attitudes. The index (ERBR) is therefore systematically searched for in the corpus: its presence, which is largely replicated, in a situation of rupture of understanding, therefore suggests that it is a signal of linguistic non-comprehension. Thus, a strong correlation between verbal language and non-conscious gestuality is well objectified, in a dialogical, multicultural situation: this identification of moments of non-understanding, as soon as they have an impact, could be a real contribution to the didactics of languages, in the cosmopolitan societies of today

Full textInserted into the line of research in Special Education, this work aims at investigating the contribution of Alternative Corporal Practice classes to its learning and development of mentally disabled students. It was characterized by a multicase study of descriptive nature and qualitative approach, which included three students with mental disability, enrolled in regular classes in Elementary School, Municipal School from Santa Maria, RS, from September to December of 2011. The school chosen for this research belongs to the east region of Santa Maria, and the subjects of this research were selected according to the inclusion criteria: Agate, Topaz and Emerald. Two weekly interventions were realized with each student, besides one hour of observation in the classroom, with each subject from the research. The instruments used were: the identification sheet from each student, descriptive opinion made by the researcher in the end of each intervention, field journal which collected information from the observations in the Physical Education classes, talking to the students principal, teachers and parents, and descriptive opinion made by the student s teachers, carried out in the first and the last day of the interventions. The first impressions about the school and the context of the subjects made the researcher worried. How can we change this reality? Would it be possible to realize the study and observe some kind of cognitive and motor improvement? The results were divided into three subtitles: Learning and Development of a Mentally Disabled student from ACPs: elements that facilitate the acquisition of higher psychological functions ; Contributions to Corporal Image and to communicative aspects from the study s subjects ; Acquisition of higher psychological functions of the mentally disabled student: possibilities from the Social-Interaction theory of Levy S. Vygotsky . Although this work has some new topics, with few studies and insights, it is a study that reinforces this new paradigm within the school context, which reveals that is possible to make progress in this field, being one more possibility in the universe of a mentally disabled student. The ACPs can be differential tools to promote inclusion and integration of MD students in the classroom and in the society. The development and learning of these students depends on the deep connection between student and teacher, goals and tasks, language and signs, school and community.

Full textBody language plays a major role in social communication. The overall aim of this thesis is to enlighten the contribution of the body in action in social interaction (SI) understanding. A developmental approach reveals the mechanisms responsible for the set-up of social abilities in children, who by nature are extensively social. In autism, a complex developmental disorder, on the contrary the social dimension is deeply affected. Our studies tackle the use of information carried by the body in action, in a social context in this pathology. The originality of our experimental paradigm relies on the use of human motion (HM), or point-light animations, that enable to isolate the social information carried by the body in action only. Subjects watched two actors engaged or not in a social interaction. A two-fold approach, behavioral and using fMRI, reveals the use and the set-up of motor simulation and questions its implication in autism. Children from 4- to 6-years of age and children with autism make use of visual information extracted from HM to understand SI, even though their performance does not reach those of adults. In adults, beyond the mentalizing network, we enlighten the importance of the mirror-neuron system for social cognition. In children, fMRI revealed the early functional recruitment of the inferior frontal gyrus, which is part of the mirror-neuron system, during the observation of social scenes. The general discussion establishes a tight link between the set-up of the mirroring system and the building of action representations. We also question the integrity of this process in autism. In conclusion, these studies bring to light the fundamental role of the mirroring mechanism in the social development of a child

Full textRecent progress in miniaturization of communicating devices and design of smart networks has triggered increased interest to body area networks (BAN) having a very strong potential for near future applications including military, personal healthcare, sport, space, entertainment, smart home, etc. This increasing attention to BAN and PAN (Personal Area Networks) applications has led to the development of textile sensors that can be easily integrated into clothes and to the buildup of high-data-rate wireless devices. The PhD thesis project has two main objectives. First, several microwave textile antennas have been optimized and fabricated to evaluate the interaction with the human body. The impact of the human body on the antenna performance is of great importance since it can directly impact the efficiency of on-body devices and global performances of the system. The power absorption in the body was also studied using realistic body models with different morphologies. Second, the unlicensed 57-64 GHz band have been studied in the wireless BAN context since it provides several advantages compared to microwave BAN. In particular, very high data rates can be reached (up to 5 Gb/s) whilst providing high level of security and low interference with adjacent networks. Besides, the on-body devices are much smaller at millimeter waves compared to those operating at microwaves

Full textThis research provides a multimodal analysis of the expression of emotion in two monolingual American children and their parents. The children were filmed in natural interactions in a family setting from the ages of 11 months to 3 years 10 months, and from 1 year 1 month to 4 years. We adopted a broad definition of language in this research which encompasses various semiotic resources – from verbal resources (lexicon and grammatical features), to nonverbal (vocalizations, facial expressions, and gestures). We focus on the children’s acquisition and development of these verbal and nonverbal markers and on how they are used by their parents. Our research shows that children develop specific and distinct communicational patterns, which are greatly influenced by the input to which they are exposed. From a theoretical perspective, our research draws from a constructivist and functionalist approach (Tomasello, 2003), and our data is analyzed in light of language socialization and of studies which have shown that facial expressions and gestures are used as communicational signals in face-to-face dialogue. Our methodology combines quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate each speaker’s verbal and nonverbal behavior when expressing emotions.Having outlined our theoretical and methodological foundation (Part I), we present our results on the expression of three emotions (happiness, sadness, and anger) in children and adults (Part II). Our research suggests that while children’s linguistic development has little impact on the richness of their emotional expression parental input and attitudes both play a crucial role in the acquisition of each modality and in the transmission of communicational patterns

Full textThis thesis investigates meaning construction during philosophical discussions that took place at both a French first and middle school. More precisely, it studies the intersubjective dimension of communication and the construction of meaning in these practices. At the same time, it examines the ways in which the interaction is co-constructed. We believe that recognising the interlocutor’s importance in the utterance act is essential in order to understand the true nature of the communication. Employing interactionist and socio-constructivist approaches, the construction of meaning is considered as a dynamic process and as a joint action between the speaker and interlocutor(s).The benefits of conducting philosophical discussions of this type with children have previously been recognised in the literature. The analysis of interactional corpora shows that philosophical discussion is a favourable environment for the collective construction of speech, meaning and conceptualization. This doctoral study considers the mechanisms of this collective construction conducted by children and the role of the facilitator within this process. In this way, the thesis examines different phenomena like the repetition/reformulation and the left-dislocation of the subject. This linguistic phenomenon forms part of the attention orientation process and guides collective interpretation and understanding. Data analysis allows the thesis to contribute to define the pragmatic functions of the studied phenomena and the different communication purposes associated with their use by children and by the facilitator during philosophical discussions

Full textThis research work proposes to undertake a project based on two axes: the first axis revolves around a field study to observe the oral teaching and learning in Yemeni universities, in particular, at the heart of the French department of Ta’izz. The purpose of this monitoring is to identify the reasons why learners are verbally passive in this institution. The hypothesis for this assumption is that the verbal passivity of Yemeni learners in class is closely linked to their insecurity in speaking French. The second axis of our research is to think about the benefits of drama in the development of oral [verbal] expression in FLE classes, especially in managing the insecurity of learners when having to speak French. The hypothesis of our research is that a theater project aimed at an « aesthetic access to speech in a foreign language » and involving the learner in his entirety (gesture, voice, creativity, relation to self and to others) could help the Yemeni learner in building a new enunciation in French as a foreign language

Full textThe rapid growth in wireless data traffic and bandwidth intensive services (voice over IP, video streaming, livestreaming, etc.) necessitates finding viable solutions to improve service quality and maximize thenetwork performance. To accommodate these bandwidth intensive applications, heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) were introduced in 3GPP as one of the main features to meet these advanced requirements. Yet, because of the difference in uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) traffic loads expected in the next HetNetsgeneration, it becomes essential to dynamically adjust UL/DL resources. To support this newapproach, dynamic time-division duplexing (TDD) has been proposed. Nevertheless, the importance of UL arises along with the evolution of social networking and cloudsolutions. Therefore, it is of great interest to introduce novel techniques that mitigate ULinterferences, improve UL and DL throughputs and allow as well, a better use of radio resources byproviding adequate load balancing among UL and DL. Such an additional feature is the decoupledUL/DL access. In our work, we first develop a TDD model in HetNets. Under this model, we derive analytical expressions for the distribution of the interferer location considering all possible interference scenarios that could occur in TDD-based networks, while taking into account the harmful impact of interference.Based on the latter result, we derive the distribution and moment generating function (MGF) of the uplink and downlinkinter-cell interference considering a network consisting of one macro cell and one small cell. We build on the derivedexpressions to analyze the average capacity of the reference cell in both uplink and downlink transmissions.Second, we develop a joint TDD/decoupling statistical model to highlight the benefits thatthe decoupling access mode can bring to a HetNet TDD based system, in terms of UL and DL spectral efficiencies and throughputs. Introducing the decoupling mode necessitates a thoroughcomparison study with the conventional coupled UL/DL access mode. Therefore, we derive the statistics of the interference signal and the signal of interest of both modes and then analyze their impact on the system performance. This work was extended to include multiple small cells deployment, where more insight into the benefits of decoupling mode is provided in terms of UL and DL decoupling gains. Further to the implementation of the developed model, it is shown that the decoupling case brings greater benefits in the uplink and maintains the same improvement in the downlink for various offset values and thus, improves the overall system performance when being combined with a dynamic TDD technology. It is further shown that our modeled network can be optimized by adopting the optimal combination of both the small cell offset factor and the distance between small cells. On the other hand, evaluating the benefits of an adaptive TDD and decoupling in a HetNet based system according to time-variant traffic loads, necessitates findinga system level simulator where we can present the motivation and accurately assess the role of both decoupling and dynamic TDD techniques in the UL/DL optimization problem. From the applied simulation scenarios, it is observed that the proposed adaptive algorithm (dynamic TDD with decoupling policies) yields significant performance improvements in UL and DL throughput compared to a number of conventional schemes, mainly in dense HetNet deployment and in highly loaded systems

The place of image in communication processes constitutes the initial ignition point for the research herein presented. For this study it became clearly necessary to treat image as a specific type of information that has transitoriness as a central feature. Proposing that all communication is based in or assumes transformation, we can see that it brings an evolutionary tendency to its domains, which allows a comprehension of how images may operate for communication to take place. For this purpose it became necessary to investigate the conditions that make communication between the human body and the environment not just possible but, most importantly, efficient. To this end, it became indispensable to treat body and environment as phenomena immersed in co-evolutionary processes. Here the body is thought of as media, as in the Bodymedia Theory of Katz and Greiner, that claims that the body is not an information processor, but is rather a medium of itself. Its exchanges with the environment are provisional and circumstantial. The communication that the body makes or does is always that of the collection of information that constitute it. Based on this concept of the body, the hypothesis of this dissertation is that the image constitutes itself in the basic materiality of communication processes which operate whenever human bodies are involved. The body is image in flow, in time. As such, the body is not merely image in movement. The image is, overall, one of the possible modes of its communication. This dissertation does not treat image as a type of photographic register of the real; its objective is to sustain that the images of the body are processual and indexes of its time, and to do this, an inter-theory reduction was applied that allows a dialogue between the semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce and Darwin s theory of evolution

This present work verifies the relationship between the spreading and the application of the tertiary media in the sociocultural and economic context at the contemporary world, and the alteration in the way the physical space has been changed, be it an internal way or constructed buildings in the urban composition. For that, we propose an investigation of the symbolic character present at the space and building s images and its capacity of transmitting as a possible entailment agent among image and receiver, an approach of the imaginary proposed by Dietmar Kamper. We defined as a corpus for this theoretical research about the horizon of the technical images that are linked to the body and to the urban buildings, produced by a tertiary media and to be diffused by it. Through this thoughts and supported in photographic images found at the world wide web, we investigated the presence of the symbolic aspects, body of document of the historical anthropology and semiotics of culture, over and above the changes of constructed characters at the buildings that are known all over the world as an adaptation mode for the ways the image is capable of transmitting. We concluded that this investigation is important for the communication studies based on the deep of the electric and electronic technology inclusion at the daily communications (which constitutes the so called abstract space ) as a phenomenal that creates a spatial and urban in and out of the walls (the concrete space ). This research bonds the communication fields known at the culture perspective through concepts of Media Theory and Image Theory, postulated by theoreticians such as Harry Pross, Ivan Bystrina, Dietmar Kamper, Vilém Flusser and Hans Belting. We worked in consonance with some researchers in Brazil such as Malena Contrera, Milton Pelegrini and specially Norval Baitello Jr., which approaches the communication and image phenomenon in yours epistemological shapes

Full textCorporal technique has been defined by Western Common Sense as being a mechanical repetition that disciplines the body with a specific purpose in mind. This thesis proposes to destabilize traditional dichotomies of the theory-practice and mind-body type that have been responsible for the longevity of some ontological metaphors such as the body-recipient and the body-instrument that have collaborated efficiently with the most traditional definition of body-technique, as well as the stereotypes of human nature (Pinker, 2004). In methodological terms, the thesis promotes the crossing of studies of different areas of knowledge such as ethnology (Mauss, 1934), the cognitive sciences (Berthoz, 1997, Noë, 2004), the theories of communication (Sodré, 2006, Greiner and Katz, 2005) and political philosophy (Agamben, 2009). The result of the study is the compartmentalization of questions raised by this range of authors and practical experiments, whose starting point is the Klauss Vianna technique, bearing in mind the particular way this technique deals with the body and its communicative processes, generating complex solutions of adaptation in diverse environments (bodies, cities, artistic spaces, etc.). In conclusion, the thesis proposes a political-cognitive redefinition that starts by seeing technique as a communicative operator and a tool of power that can both discipline the body and activate the strategies of political resistance. Everything depends on the processes of mediation that will be activated during the communicative experience between the body and its surroundings

Full textWireless Body Area Networks (WBAN) refers to the family of “wearable” wireless sensor networks (WSN) used to collect personal data, such as human activity, heart rate, sleep sequences or geographical position. This thesis aims at proposing cooperative algorithms and cross-layer mechanisms with WBAN to perform large-scale individual motion capture and coordinated group navigation applications. For this purpose, we exploit the advantages of jointly cooperative and heterogeneous WBAN under full/half-mesh topologies for localization purposes, from on-body links at the body scale, body-to-body links between mobile users of a group and off-body links with respect to the environment and the infrastructure. The wireless transmission relies on an impulse radio Ultra-Wideband (IR-UWB) radio (based on the IEEE 802.15.6 standard), in order to obtain accurate peer-to-peer ranging measurements based on Time of Arrival (ToA) estimates. Thus, we address the problem of positioning and ranging estimation through the design of cross-layer strategies by considering realistic body mobility and channel variations. Our first contribution consists in the creation of an unprecedented WBAN measurement database obtained with real experimental scenarios for mobility and channel modelling. Then, we introduce a discrete-event (WSNet) and deterministic (PyLayers) co-simulator tool able to exploit our measurement database to help us on the design and validation of cooperative algorithms. Using these tools, we investigate the impact of nodes mobility and channel variations on the ranging estimation. In particular, we study the “three-way ranging” (3-WR) protocol and we observed that the delays of 3-WR packets have an impact on the distances estimated in function of the speed of nodes. Then, we quantify and compare the error with statistical models and we show that the error generated by the channel is bigger than the mobility error. In a second time, we extend our study for the position estimation. Thus, we analyze different strategies at MAC layer through scheduling and slot allocation algorithms to reduce the impact of mobility. Then, we propose to optimize our positioning algorithm with an extended Kalman filter (EKF), by using our scheduling strategies and the statistical models of mobility and channel errors. Finally, we propose a distributed-cooperative algorithm based on the analysis of long-term and short-term link quality estimators (LQEs) to improve the reliability of positioning. To do so, we evaluate the positioning success rate under three different channel models (empirical, simulated and experimental) along with a conditional algorithm (based on game theory) for virtual anchor choice. We show that our algorithm improve the number of positions estimated for the nodes with the worst localization performance

The objective of this master dissertation is study a specific type of map, which means meeting map . This object investigates how happens and how it representates the communication between people and cities. This study starts from the discussion of the representation and perception actions, according to how these things are being study nowadays by transdisciplie net, who build the theory of this research. The main point of debate were discussion about emotion, feelings and body images done by António Damásio (1999, 2003); the concept of enaction proposed by Francisco Varella; the differences between map and decal proposed by Gilles Deleuze e Felix Guattari (1999); and the concept of corpomidia , mainly about communication process involved in body relation with the environment proposed by Greiner e Katz (2005). The research results were a bibliographical revision about what means create a map and some reading made from diverse kind of medias (movies, installations and press), as well as experiments that takes body signs impressions at the moment that the body is exposed to the citie´s own image, when a perceptive meeting action happens. Later, these signs were decode into images and sounds that lead us to the creation of a meeting map between body and city. Part of this research was developed in Lima (Peru) in the biotechnology laboratory and in the Centro de Investigación de la Arquitectura y la Ciudad (CIAC) of Pontifícia Universidade Católica
This research investigated the process of social learning through the body communication modes of the students of elementary school from a public school at the time of the game Geometric Balance of the National Pact for Literacy in the Age One - PNAIC. We can question-problem: bodily communication modes present in the PNAIC game practice contribute to the development of social learning? The study aims to analyze social learning by bodily communication modes present in the game situation. It is a descriptive, qualitative, characterized as a case study. The study was developed with the collaboration of 24 children aged between 7 and 8 years of the 3rd year of elementary school at the Escola Estadual Gilberto Rola, located in the Rural Area of the city of Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte. They were used as data collection instruments participant observation, the field diary, observation protocol and the dialogical group. The game Geometric Balance was implemented in the school routine in four classes conducted by literacy teacher accompanied by the researcher teacher. The collected data on participant observation and the field diary were analyzed by Analytic Existential Movement (Gomes-da-Silva, 2012; 2011; 2001) and the Social Cognitive Theory (Albert Bandura, 1986, 1977, 2008). Data from the dialogical group were investigated by content analysis (Bardin, 2011). The study shows that social modeling developed in the game Geometric balance was driven by body communication mode "primordial of fronting" by having a competitive character action immediately and creative. The so that children move is a means of driving the communication behavior modeling process and therefore social learning. We conclude that learning the game Geometric Balance depart directly from interactions between players in this communication process is to promote creativity and competitiveness between subjects, reverberating significant new interactive practices.

The main hypothesis of this research is that individuals who carry a congenital visual disability can increase their bodily communication strategies through re-meaningfulness processes of body internal image through movement. For these individuals, a simple level of control, possession, direction, and operation of their bodies become particularly limited, however, it is possible to intervene in this process through specific trainings. The steady and varied proprioceptive stimulation and the vestibular system (concerning equilibrium) can compensate the lack of sight, giving a body sense less precarious. The investigation puts together references from the communication theory and philosophy of mind, demystifying the sight as a singular and unique process. Therefore, it debates the image construction (mainly from Antonio Damásio s work, Lakoff & Johnson and Alain Berthoz) and bodymedia identity (Katz and Greiner). The research results have been tested in practical experiments performed by means of dance classes for blind people since the Master course. Currently, the investigation of some cognition models by cognitive science bias, the survey of disability paradoxical role and its latent connections, have been corroborating that the brain is a highly adaptable and efficient system, able to re-establish communicative links even before the most precarious situations

Full textThis research focuses on multimodal pedagogical communication in synthetic (virtual) worlds. The study investigates the interplay between verbal and nonverbal interaction which supports verbal participation and production in a foreign language. This is analysed from a socio-semiotic perspective of multimodality within the context of a course held in the synthetic world Second Life, which adopted a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach. The course, entitled 'Building Fragile Spaces', formed part of the European project ARCHI21. It was designed for higher education students of Architecture whose foreign language was either French or English. The interplay between verbal and nonverbal interaction is examined from three different angles. Firstly, considering the opportunities synthetic worlds offer for the co-creation of the environment through building activities and for collaboration, the role played by the nonverbal mode during a collaborative building activity is investigated. The study questions whether the use of the nonverbal mode impacts on the participation of students in the verbal mode, and whether any interplay exists between these two modes that influences verbal production. Secondly, use of the nonverbal mode by students in inworld identity construction is addressed and considered with reference to their verbal interaction, and participation, in the foreign language. Thirdly, the research concentrates upon interplay between the audio and textchat modalities in the verbal mode. More specifically, the focus is on whether the textchat plays a role during interaction, considering it is in competition not only with the audio modality but also with several nonverbal modalities; and on whether the textchat modality can serve for feedback provision on language form. This thesis seeks to contribute to the methodological considerations to allow research to move beyond speculative and anecdotal examples of multimodal pedagogical communication in synthetic worlds. A typology of nonverbal and verbal modalities is proposed, and then drawn upon, to extend a previous methodology suggested for multimodal transcription to interactions in synthetic worlds. Considering, within the fields of Social Sciences and Language Sciences, the more general research problem to render research data used for analyses visible and publically accessible, the study adopts a LEarning and TEaching Corpus (LETEC) methodological approach. Constituting a structured corpus allows for contextual analyses of the data collected during the 'Building Fragile Spaces' course. This research offers insights into how verbal participation increases with reference to the proxemic organisation of students, the customization of students' avatar appearance and an increased use of nonverbal acts. Concerning verbal production, the study shows how avatar movement in the nonverbal mode was used as a strategy to overcome verbal miscommunication when expressing direction and orientation and also the benefits of using the textchat modality for feedback on language form in order to support learners’ productions in the audio modality. In light of these results, the study suggests some considerations concerning the design of pedagogical activities for language learning within synthetic worlds

Full textThis research explores the potential of teenage peer spoken interactions in ESL classrooms in France. The focus here is on analysing task-based activities and learners’ performances, in order to improve our understanding of interactional competence. My approach is based on Action Research and a collection of empirical data from language classrooms. Several studies were conducted before setting up a protocol for a longitudinal corpus of video-recorded conversations between 24 dyads of peers. The 48 lower intermediate participants performed two tasks at the beginning and end of the school year. Specific training was offered in order to improve strategic spoken interaction. The 18 hours of verbal and non-verbal outcome was transcribed on CLAN and analysed according to the Conversational Analysis method. On a theoretical level, my approach brings together the European tradition of language didactics based on the CEFR (2001) and the sociocultural theory that takes its roots in Vygotsky’s (1978) work, followed by Lantolf (2000) who deals more specifically with SLA. According to these authors, social interaction not only promotes learning but is also at the core of a development process. This thesis examines the effects of training on communication strategies, the expectable outcomes and assessments of such a competence in an institutional environment

Full textKathak, an Indian dance, comprises specific body technics and narrative significances. The democratisation of this art has lead to the deformation of its teaching and its presentation. Hence, we would like to rehabilitate its fundamental corpus in order to formalize and institutionalize its instruction. The study consists in elaborating teaching contents for a keen but uninitated French public for whom no teaching strategy has been defined as yet. Our general hypothesis is that the transmission of knowledge intended for lay French pubic requires transposition. Our principal question is the balanced mix of body techniques and narrative significances in the teachable kathak On the theoritical level, we will comply with the principles of didactic transposition which supervises the passage of an objet of reference into a teaching objet and on the operational level, we will follow the methodology of didactic engineering which controls the conception and the effects of teaching contents

Full textThe need to design linguistic corpora to support research in linguistics has triggered the development of numerous studies exploring various approaches and methodologies regarding good practices for written corpus building. Fewer studies are available when it comes to spoken data and those that concern the interlanguage of learners are even rarer. The CIL project (Corpus Inter Langue), under completion at the University of Rennes2 and supervised by a research team specialising in the fields of linguistics and pedagogy (LIDILE), aims at building a large corpus of written and spoken productions in EFL and in FFL. This phd dissertation mainly focuses on the FFL (French as a Foreign Language) corpus (CIL-FLE).The first chapter of the thesis is dedicated to the study of oral speech as a linguistic object from both a historical and an epistemological perspective. The second chapter tackles the question of corpus linguistics generally speaking as well as the concept/ notion of corpus as a linguistic object. Regarding corpus linguistics, we will review and explore the diverse approaches and methods that are used so as to carry out research enquiries: introspection, elicitation or consultation of authentic data. The concept of corpus is then analysed according to/following a series of criteria which we will closely examine in order to propose a definition of the linguistic corpus. The third and last chapter will implement the former theoretical findings through the description of the CIL corpus design. Thus, corpus constituents, transcription and archiving protocols will be described in detail. We are particularly interested in the transcription protocol and we will insist on the difficulties encountered when attempting to transcribe learners ‘data. Finally, the CIL-FLE corpus, which contains approximately 105 000 words and was developed all along this phd, will be described

Full textGiven the quantity of information with which we are constantly confronted, our survival depends on the ability to rapidly detect and attend to what is most relevant. To this end, our brains have evolved to trigger changes in our affective state in response to relevant objects and events, which inform us of their existence and of their nature. While body-induced affective states impact the perception of congruent emotional stimuli, it is still unknown whether body-induced affective states influence the manner in which the relevance of external stimuli is determined and therefore perceived. Here, we examined the role that socially meaningful transient body states play in the evaluation of relevance of facial displays of threat. In a series of behavioral experiments, we modulated participants’ body state, instructing them to hold dominant or non-dominant postures prior to behavioral tests, in which we varied the degree of relevance of the stimuli and the focus of attention. We first demonstrated that these body postures, in accordance with the social status they embody, influenced the evaluation of the relevance of threatening facial displays. Moreover, this impact occurred where facial displays were processed implicitly, highlighting the saliency of these social cues. Overall, our studies demonstrate, that body states, not only influence the evaluation of relevance, but determine it, as otherwise relevant social cues, were no longer evaluated as such. These findings suggest that body states interact with affective states to signal which social cues are relevant to the observer

Full textThe dominant narrative of the collapsing of space due to ICT in organizations is challenged by this study. It is argued that this is due to a general lack of interest in organizational space in IS scholarship combined with technological determinism. This study seeks to understand the relationship between ICT and organizational space by mobilizing affordance theory based on J.J. Gibson’s work. A qualitative multiple-case study covering two business schools, in Canada and the UK, was undertaken. The spatial practices of academics were scrutinized using a model based on affordance theory to ascertain the role of ICT, as part of the wider environment, in the shaping of these practices. The results clearly demonstrate the inadequacy of affordance theory for the study of ICT in general. An alternative perspective based on the phenomenology of perception of Merleau-Ponty is proposed and successfully tested against the data. This alternative perspective suggests that, based on the experience of academics, ICT simultaneously collapses and expands space. ICT acts as a point of singularity where proximate and remote spaces converge to produce a singular sphere of experience. The study further develops Merleau-Ponty’s concepts of intentionality, body schema, habitus, knowing body, and habitual body in the context of the spatial practices of academics. I propose abandoning affordance theory in favour of an experiential approach to understand the relationship between organizational space and ICT

Full textThe aging of population and the increase in medical costs have brought a lot of innovations in the medical domain. One of them is the use of wireless sensors that are located in, on, or around the human body to monitor patient’s physiological signs. Due to the nature of the transmitted data, high data security is one of the most essential requirements in the system. The first objective of this thesis is to improve the communication security between on-body sensors with a novel transmission mechanism that uses human skin as a transmission medium and confines the surface-wave signal inside the skin. Transverse resonance method (TRM) is used to numerically analyze existing modes within the human body model. Confinement capabilities as well as propagation losses are investigated for frequencies up to 60 GHz. It should be noted that the developed TRM-based dispersion analysis code is the core work of this thesis and is used throughout all the main analysis in this thesis. Another innovation in the medical domain can be referred to the non-contact sensor-less remote medical monitoring using Doppler radar. Leaky-wave antennas are good candidatures for such applications due to their frequency-depending beam scanning properties. A fast scanning is desired in order to cover a large angular range with a given operation frequency bandwidth. Consequently, in the second part of this thesis, an original TRM-procedure-based design is proposed to increase the frequency dispersion of the guiding structure, which uses a grounded dielectric slab covered by a metasurface. Using this enhanced dispersion, a periodic leaky-wave antenna is designed and simulated in the 60 GHz band

In the last ten years, actions developed in dance, live and in the media, left the focus in Rio-São Paulo. Spread through several places in the country had taken a new geography of ideas that understand dance as a communication process of the body, organized as a thought that questions power structures, artistic procedures and boundaries between languages. This masters essay selects, as investigation corpus, some of these experiences employed in the education, in the circuit (festivals, shows and meetings), and in the research and creation in dance that, as survival strategy, creates decentralized cultural polar regions. The intend is to demonstrate that these experiences have propose new communication actions to dance. They push punctual changes in the dance market and in the development of public politics of cultural motivation and reconfigure, not only the esthetic system in which they are in, but the whole cultural system, contributing, in this way, for the dance survival and your effective insertion in the social fabric. As methodology, it was used a data analysis in a systematic way, that being, understanding the articulations between the investigated elements, based in the evolution theories proposed by the evolutionist scientist Richard Dawkins (2000-2001), in the concept of body and media proposed by the researchers Helena Katz and Christine Greiner (2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005) and in the cultural and political studies such as the ones developed by Bauman (1999), Agamben (2002), Bhabha (1998) and Foucault (1979 and 1996). Both, the bibliographic research and the field investigation (interviews and case studies) show that the strategies have been developed to recommend new ways of understanding and event organization, information flow and company conception and educational projects in dance. Actions that exist in the relation body and environment, in a contaminator flow, co evolutional, and non-determinist.

The consumer society in which we live, together with certain merchandising campaigns, has resulted in the fact that people tend to associate more and more the idea of a "perfect body" with personal and social success. Needless to say, people are more and more concerned about their physical appearance during adolescence. All this has inspired a thorough study on this topic from the perspective of the physical education and by means of an "Action-Research" process.
The aim of this research was that some students in the fourth year of ESO (the last compulsory school year in the Spanish educational system) should acquire a critical attitude towards the body-building and body-care obsession. This study has been carried out by designing and using an Educational Multimedia Resource.
This educational research is to be justified in the curricular foundations of the Spanish educational system and it aims to define clearly the core of this study: the development of a critical attitude. Several teaching strategies are designed, described and assessed, so that students can develop this critical thinking.
All in all, the final goal is that students are able to develop a critical attitude while working from their own experiences.
