Full textThe study of the body of Christ in Tuscan painting of the fourteenth century and the first half of the fifteenth century implies a double questioning : is there a noticeable evolution in the rendering of the body during this period and is there a thorough aim on the painter's part to render the dual nature of Christ, human and divine ? This approach is particularly relevant because it concerns the figure o Christ in the presence of man. In the representations of the Baptism and the Crucifixion, man and God appear unclothed and in the same situation. Thus, it is possible to compare Christ with the neophytes about to be baptised and then, with the two crucified thieves. The study of the resurrected body will subsequently determine if its rendering is differetn from the baptised or crucified bofy and if its ambiguity is addresses by the painter. The analysis of texts by the Church Fathers or those of Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure reveals the dogmatic stance of the church and the mendicant ordres on baptism, crucifixion and resurrection. The study of the preachers' sermons and the mystics' witness accounts of their vision of Christ attempts to define the perception of the body in the 14th and 15th century and its visual representation

Full textThe main scholars always depicted the High Book of the Grail as a novel which borders on barbarism. The bursting of the frames of arthurian writing is significant in its most iconic episodes as well, which reveal a huge gap between "High Scripture" and a glorification of the materiality of beings. The novel seems based on a double postulation up and down, towards materiality and spirituality. The study of events and senefiances of death applies to grasp the writing of in-between, while emphasizing the study of two major elements: the inherent visual dimension to the representation of death and methods of its own writing which sketches the outlines of a "funeral writing." Visual paradigm relays the evocative power of the dead narrated while that fateful dominant narrative seems to be one of the most efficient guarantee of the unit of a work whose structure is relevent to illusion or arcana. The hermeneutic thought process of this study considers at first the vocabulary of death, before addressing the circumstances of the "instant mortel", the two spiritual and temporal sides of death, the always powerful unity of the living and the dead. After some stylistic considerations, as well as rhetorical, historical and anthropological ones, the last chapters move to the field of poetics, in a world where death appears fundamentally ubiquitous

Chris Cunningham is the main subject in this thesis. Cunningham was one of the most influential and creative music video directors in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Visible throughout his art is the theme of the body and its innards - an important and wide discussion in contemporary culture studies. The hypothesis of this text is that the music video is one of the main audiovisual narratives of postmodern culture from the aspect of new aesthetics and artistic experiments. Cunningham adds original marks to the characteristics that constitute contemporary art, especially the one that has placed the body under interrogation and also the art object as waste. The contemporary art discussion in this thesis is inspired by psychanalysts Jacques-Allan Miller and Gerard Wajcman and the positioning of the object, and a new gaze at it is provided by Didi-Huberman. Concerning the role of the body in this setting, Santaella brings a contribution on it as an art support, besides presenting much of the specific problems of the body in culture. Raymond Bellour, Philippe Dubois and Arlindo Machado with their discussions around film and video allow the insertion of the music video as a language with its own characteristics and history, as the theorists Andrew Goodwin, E. Ann Kaplan and Carol Vernallis point out. The Lacanian theory provides a formal way to analyze and discuss the body from an instinctive perspective that drives the subject in the contemporary world. In order to prove this assertion and the hypothesis of this thesis, three semiotic-psychoanalytic analyses were done on the following works: All is Full of Love (1999), Flex (2000) and Rubber Johnny (2005)
De modo a comprovar tal afirmação e a hipótese desta tese, três análises de cunho semiótico-psicanalítico abordam os trabalhos: All is Full of Love (1999), Flex (2000) e Rubber Johnny (2005)

Full textThe letters of Paul testify to the prominent role that suffering played not only in the life of the apostle, but also in the lives of the communities to which he wrote. Startlingly, Paul does not express either surprise or frustration at suffering’s presence, but instead identifies it as an essential feature of Christian existence: suffering (in some way) derives from union with Christ, and thereby shares in Christ’s own suffering. Although the concept of “suffering as participation with Christ” (SPC) has received some attention within contemporary scholarship, I argue that the conversation would be enriched by the addition of a project that offers detailed readings of key moments in which SPC appears in Paul’s writings, that accepts all the letters in the Pauline canon as equally valid witnesses to “Paul’s thought,” and that uses the findings generated by this exegetical-canonical reading strategy to produce a Pauline “theology” of SPC. The thesis of the dissertation is that (the canonical) Paul’s theology of suffering—read from the tripartite perspective of exegesis, canon, and theology—builds on three foundational convictions (i.e., Christology, eschatology, and cosmology) out of which four correlative commitments emerge (i.e., suffering as salvation’s “prerequisite,” Christ’s suffering as democratize-able, all Christian suffering as participation in Christ’s suffering, and suffering as the site of a profound experience of the love of God in Christ). Full textThe objective of the thesis presented here is to study one of the many artistic consequences of medieval devotion to the Eucharist in Catalan bishoprics: Corpus Christi altarpieces. More specifically, the main aim is to analyse the iconographic cycles represented on those fourteenth and fifteenth century altarpieces –some of them preserved and some others known thanks to documentary evidence. With the intention of understanding the circumstances that gave rise to the appearance of these works and deepen the knowledge of their iconography, the first part of the thesis focusses on the emerging cult to the Eucharist, which, in the late middle ages, acquired an indisputable centrality with the institution of the solemnity of Corpus Christi. Based on the theoretical doctrine of the real presence of Christ in the consecrated species, which is the real agent of devotion, we analyse the main pious expressions that were derived from this devotion. Next, we give an overview of the phenomenon in the Catalonia of that time, yet to be published. Once the religious background is established, the second part of the thesis, which is the main part, studies the Corpus Christi altarpieces. In order to contextualize the phenomenon, we make a brief overview of some of the main implications of the cult in the artistic field, including the appearance of chapels devoted to the body of Christ, which are the natural liturgical framework of the works to be studied, although not the only one. It is important to point out that, initially, the works with the above mentioned dedication preserved in the area, mainly pictorial altarpieces, are rare in contrast with the power of the cult and, unfortunately, there is not much preserved documentation on the lost works. Notwithstanding, a diverse and significant set of altarpieces has survived that allows us to establish the main thematic vectors, beyond the particularities, that must have normally made up the iconographic programmes. We dedicate the last chapters of the thesis to these, both those that have a long tradition and those arising from the effervescence of devotion, which are pertinent reflections on the work and its iconography, primarily aimed at highlighting the real presence of Christ in the consecrated bread and wine. Firstly, we analyse the outstanding presence of the iconographic theme of the Last Supper, as the central image of the institution of the sacrament of the Eucharist. Secondly, we look at the weight the Christian figures had within the framework referred to, with special emphasis on the two cycles that seem to have played a leading role, namely, the childhood of Christ and the Passion. Thirdly, we reflect on the recurring presence of the scenes of the Eucharistic liturgy, primarily the Elevation of the consecrated host and the Procession of Corpus Christi, which unfailingly link the iconography of the works studied with illuminated manuscripts. Finally, the last chapter re-examines the numerous figurations of Eucharistic miracles that concur and evidence a variety of known sources in Catalonia in that period. And this without neglecting, of course, those expressions that have their origin in a local cult, which, unfortunately, have largely perished. The thesis also includes a catalogue with the entries of the nine altarpieces and a set of various kinds of documents that aim to give an overall vision of the Eucharistic worship in Catalonia and its artistic repercussions. The bibliography, which might be used as an effective tool for further research on this field, closes this thesis.

Full textThis thesis examines that basic assumption in the light of the 18 ecclesiological references to soma found in the Pauline corpus. We argue that such an assumption is implausible and we conclude that it is simply the human body (any human body) which acts as a metaphorical signifier for the church; further, that Christ's personal body, crucified and risen, becomes relevant only in a larger Christological and soteriological sense.

Abstract: This work has as its leading thread the study of images in the anthropological Field. The catholic party of Corpus Christi was chosen as a research object for being an important cultural celebration in our country, which manifests itself mainly through visuality. Exploring it through photographs and iconographies provide us possibility of both plastic and symbolic approaches. Initially I introduce the research trajectory in which text and image reveal some notes I took, plus the work report, the pathways and the method taken in this research. Secondly I show some iconographies, engravings that tell the Corpus Christi's story also by text and images. These are interesting for revealing an unique dynamics, which I name here narrative-images, in which numeric indications and texts trace a reading path for these pictures. After this first structural approach, I attempt to understand how sacred and human are revealed in these engravings and how text and image are employed in these representations. This work's relevance lays in revealing how two forms of human communication, text and image, can have its maximum potentialities once they meet each other. Inserting these question in the anthropological field, we can get to know the connections that link studies on image and studies on society.

Full textThis study focuses its analysis on the perception on BTL advertising in religious traditional festivities which is carried out in crowded areas in order to become visible. The case study is the festivity of Corpus Christi in Cusco in 2019 and the target public involved in the study is the members of the Council of Brotherhoods, representatives of each of the fifteen brotherhoods that participate in that event actively. They carry images of the saints and virgins from each church located in different districts and city areas; they also participate taking decisions about the festivity which are of great importance for the local population. The objective of this study is to analyze the perception that the members of the Council of Brotherhoods have of BTL advertising in Cusco’s Corpus Christi festivity. The methodology is based on a qualitative approach, using the structured surveys as data collection tool. Among the main findings in this study, in relation to perception, it is evidenced that there is no emotional link between the festivity attendees and the BTL advertising since this last one is considered an external factor that distorts the real and essential meaning of a traditional religious manifestation of such magnitude. Furthermore, this advertising is considered to be strictly commercial and it is stated that the target public does not obtain any benefit from it. Finally, it is concluded that BTL advertising in traditional religious festivities can be more appropriate when the real meaning and essence of this type of manifestations are respected in order not to damage the announcers’ reputation.

The main objective of this research is to discuss how to configure the language and communication practices performed in the sitcom Todo mundo odeia o Chris (2006). We'll make use of the contributions of the metapragmatic function and metadiscursive schemes (SIGNORINI, 2008) about how the process of social difference and, consequently, of body marker tiers are legitimized communicative practices. This process, articulated to the historical events of ritual acts of speech (AUSTIN, 1998; PEIRANO, 2002; DORNELLES, 2002), produces discourses which effect the intelligibility of the bodies with signs of differentiation, considering that this is a basic construction in the perpetuation of the coloniality of knowledge and power (QUIJANO, 2005) that shapes the way the world is read by an epistemology that regulates and hierarquizes differences. The text-speech Todo mundo odeia o Chris, being translated/dubbed (MARTINS & AMORIN, 2013) producing the trace of the compulsory black diaspora (SANSONE, 2003; GILROY, 2001), is reentextualized from the local-global repertoire (MIGNOLO, 2003) of the brazilian translator, like the language can be used to perpetuate, architect and ritualize normalizing discourses for the control, addressing and notification of bodies (BUTLER, 2003; 1997; PINTO, 2002; 2013a; 2013b). Such actions make the black body vulnerable to acts of naming and violence that historically subordinate them. For this reason, the media narratives (SILVERSTONE, 2002), by providing mediated experiences about the world by the writing of the scenario of signification, enable T.M.O.C to charge the spirituality of the humor (BERGSON, 2001; SALES JR., 2006) via poetic strategies in the exercise of the language (BAUMAN & BRIGGS, 2006) and act against the dominant ideology. The black body is a sign still segregated and undervalued in the context of coloniality/modernity/globalization/State in the Americas, what constitutes a transterritorial fight that specifies in diferent locations while playing the role of dominant forces. So, when T.M.O.C shows a narrative that not only inserts the black body into visibility but do it in a reflexive and critical form with the metapragmatic action, it contradicts the cordiality, the cultural communicability and the not-said that directs the brazilian situation with a neurosis born of itself (GONZALEZ, 1984).

This paper aims to understand the meaning of the Feast of Corpus Christi today, as well as its relation with space and religion. The main point of this work is to analyze this ceremony considering the ludic, the artistic, the perfomative and the ephemeral essence it holds. Corpus Christi is a thirteenth century catholic procession that celebrates Christ’s real and substantial presence in the Eucharist; it’s the day when the Blessed Sacrament it taken to a procession. The ethnographic setting to be covered in this paper is the celebration of this solemnity in N. Srª da Piedade Parish, in Mage, in the Rio de Janeiro State, and this essay will investigate the reasons and the meanings attributed to this art by those who make it. Considering that the Corpus Christi rugs are made on the street and belong to this context, one of the main points of this research has been to analyze this sacred-profane dichotomy, not as opposed categories but as interactive ones. Another aspect here covered is the production of the rug, so that the symbolic action of drawing holy pictures on this unusual space – the street – can be understood. Along with those multiple possibilities of analysis, the idea of “fest” and its collective effervescence character, which is able to freshen pacts and reinforce communion, will be discussed. All these categories - which are open to many different analyses -whenever it comes to the production of the rug or to the procession, are the ones who certify the uniqueness of this celebration.

Full textThe present work analyses the re-ethnitisation process undertaken by the Kankuamo indians at the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta in Colombia. The questions generated by the identity movement are addressed by observing the local celebration named God-Party. The ritual of this party is defined by a journey to places called "pagamentos", traditional spaces for offerings to the ancestors. The "pagamentos" constitute not only truthful, sacred cartographies, but, most of all, a powerful language working as a grid of understandability of a memorial schema. In this schema, the recurring theme revolves around a painful conflict; which is always related to external current events

As variáveis determinadas foram: oxigênio dissolvido, pH, temperatura, salinidade, transparência, nutrientes inorgânicos dissolvidos (nitrato, nitrito, amônio e o-fosfato), fósforo e nitrogênio total dissolvido, fósforo e nitrogênio orgânico dissolvido, sulfeto, poli-fosfatos, clorofila-a e feofitina-a.

This research analyzes the body as part of a process of social construction and seeks to understand the implications of the relationship between the social construction of body and evangelical religious practices. Chooses the Congregation Christian Churches, Presbyterian and Reborn in Christ in the neighborhood of Rudge Ramos, Sao Bernardo do Campo, as an investigation of this issue. This relationship is shrouded in intentions and physical manifestations involving religious practices and lifestyles of people who attend these names in the neighborhood in question. The study developed a mapping of physical techniques that mean the way people are "worth" of their bodies. When assessing the social, cultural and economic factors related to the neighborhood in question, and inserted it to the churches, we seek to understand how these three gospel traditions develop differentiated body techniques. Also, if people who attend these churches suffer any influence of the "model" of embodiment of society today is to claim that the quest for social mobility and the conditions of consumption linked to the body.(AU)

Full textThe doctoral thesis is a research on every aspect related to the commercial theatre in Murcia city from the end of 16th century to the 18th century. The research provides with information about corrales de comedias (former play houses, theatres), actors and theatre companies at the Golden Age as well as a look through Corpus Christi feast in Murcia. At the dawn of Baroque the first place for performing in Murcia was a courtyard in Nuestra Señora de Gracia y Buen Suceso Hospital where some performances took place from 1593 to 1609. In 1609 the Toro theatre was built; it was a big municipal play house which tried to meet the demand for theatre in the city. In 1633 performances were moved to a building in Santa Catalina square in Murcia, but in 1636 the Toro theatre reopened and worked until the 19th century.Murcia city was a permanent performing spot for actors and companies when touring the south and east of the country.
