The monograph, based on the identification of trends and problems of changes in the demand and supply of skills, as well as the study of modern mechanisms of their formation and actualization, substantiates the priority areas of human resources development in the Russian Federation that meet the strategic challenges of the period of digital transformation of the labor sphere. The authors identify and systematize current and future trends related to changes in the demand for professions and skills in the Russian and global labor markets. The directions of transformation of the demand for skills and professions in the conditions of digitalization of the economy, skills and professions of the future are determined. Quantitative and qualitative imbalances and trends in labor supply and demand in the Russian labor market are identified (based on statistical analysis of data from 2009-2019). The features and problems of supply and demand of professions/skills in the segments of the Russian labor market covered by Internet recruitment are identified (based on data from resume parsing and vacancies of Internet recruitment portals in 2018 and 2020). Methodological approaches to identifying widely-and poorly-demanded skills are proposed and tested during the competence analysis of labor supply and demand using Big Data technologies.the competence profile of the vacancies of the professional core and extra - skills. An innovative author's approach to assessing the potential of skills capitalization — a possible increase in the salary of an applicant due to the expansion of the set of skills that he has-is proposed and tested. The current policy directions of formation and improvement of skills of the population in the Russian Federation are identified and systematized. The strategic challenges of the period of digital transformation of the labor sphere facing the Russian Federation and the priority areas of human resources development that meet these challenges are identified. The conclusions and recommendations can be used in the work of the Ministry of Labor of Russia, Rostrud, the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, the Ministry of Education of Russia, government authorities, employment services of the Russian regions, as well as organizations of the professional education system.

Based on the definition of the subjunctive as a realisation of the grammatical category mood and an expression of the semantic/pragmatic category modality the book presents the first comprehensive and consistent description of the history of the present English subjunctive. It covers the periods Old English (OE), Middle English (ME), and Early Modern English (EModE), and it considers all contruction types in which the subjunctive is attested, namely main clauses, noun clauses, relative clauses, and adverbial clauses. Besides numerically substantiating the well-known hypothesis that the simplification of the verbal syntagm led to a long-term frequency decrease of the subjunctive, it explores the factors which governed its competition with other verbal expressions. The data used for the analysis come from The Helsinki Corpus of English Texts; they comprise nearly half a million words in 91 files. Their analysis was carried out by close reading, and the results of the analysis were processed with the statistical program SPSS. This combined quantitative-qualitative method offers new insights into the research landscape of English subjunctive use and into the fields of historical English linguistics and corpus linguistics.

Diagnosis of acute poisoning is based on history, symptoms, biomedical investigations, toxicological analyses, and sometimes therapeutic tests. Toxicological analytical methods are now widely available. A qualitative or semiquantitative analysis of the parent compound may be adequate for diagnostic assessment. A quantitative analysis is mandatory for kinetic studies. For instance, in ethylene glycol poisoning, analysis of ethylene glycol concentrations is useful for the diagnosis, but glycolate concentrations are more relevant for the evaluation of the severity and prognosis. Groups of symptoms (or toxidromes) may provide diagnostic clues for toxins that are not usually included in routine screening. The management of the poisoned patient is mostly supportive, but toxicological quantitative analyses are mandatory for some treatments, e.g. alkaline diuresis in salicylate poisoning, repeated activated charcoal in theophylline poisoning, haemodialysis, ethanol in ethylene glycol poisoning, or the use of chelating agents.

The social sciences are becoming datafied. The questions that have been considered the domain of sociologists, now are answered by data scientists, operating on large datasets, and breaking with the methodological tradition for better or worse. The traditional social sciences, such as sociology or anthropology, are thus under the double threat of becoming marginalized or even irrelevant; both because of the new methods of research, which require more computational skills, and because of the increasing competition from the corporate world, which gains an additional advantage based on data access. However, sociologists and anthropologists still have some important assets, too. Unlike data scientists, they have a long history of doing qualitative research. The more quantified datasets we have, the more difficult it is to interpret them without adding layers of qualitative interpretation. Big Data needs Thick Data. This book presents the available arsenal of new tools for studying the society quantitatively, but also show the new methods of analysis from the qualitative side and encourages their combination. In shows that Big Data can and should be supplemented and interpreted through thick data, as well as cultural analysis, in a novel approach of Thick Big Data.The book is critically important for students and researchers in the social sciences to understand the possibilities of digital analysis, both in the quantitative and qualitative area, and successfully build mixed-methods approaches.

This chapter analyzes relevant quantitative and qualitative research on honor killings. It includes an original empirical study—the Churchill-Holmes study—of 200 incidents from 28 countries and territories. Following a comparative analysis of major studies displayed in tables and charts, a number of generalizations, or central tendencies, are inferred. Central tendencies are divided into three major categories based on rough estimates of the probability that the characteristics in each category will be found in all or most instances of honor killing. Central tendencies pertain to the frequency of all known aspects of honor killings. This research serves as grounds for the analysis, hypotheses, and tentative conclusions drawn in the remainder of this book.

Abstract:
Foreign intervention in ethnic conflicts has received significant attention in the last 20 years. Scholars have initially considered the sources for these interventions through instrumental and affective factors, though a better classification involves grouping these motives between domestic and international factors. The former category assumes that a third state’s internal politics best explain motives of intervention, and that domestic groups within the state have the greatest impact on foreign policy decision making. Theories based on domestic explanations assume that domestic politics greatly matter in the formulation of states’ decisions to intervene or not in ethnic conflicts elsewhere. As for the external explanations, scholars share a common assertion that the international environment is the central determinant explaining third state intervention. These explanations focus on the impact of institutions and international norms on the international relations of ethnic conflicts. In addition to these approaches, this area of research still contains many issues left unaddressed, such as how interference from outside might affect an ethnic conflict, and what forms of analysis might be used to study foreign interventions. Scholars have applied both quantitative and qualitative techniques, and the diaspora literature stands out for relying almost exclusively on case studies and on very notable cases. Otherwise, the rest of the work in this field follows the current standards by using a mixture of case studies and quantitative analyses depending on the questions in play.

Chapter 4 discusses a particular set of fund managers and analysts, those who follow investment strategies which are based on quantitative research. They might be expected to be more solitary in their practices and less enmeshed in relations to clients and to other intermediaries than their colleagues who rely on more qualitative reasoning. The chapter shows, however, that this is not so. Quantitative managers’ investment ideas often come from others in the investment chain. Brokers and sell-side analysts are one major source; another source of ideas is those occupying similar roles in other firms. The chapter also suggests that basing a quantitative investment strategy around an idea that is already in circulation eases the task of marketing and the communication with clients. However, successful self-presentation to external audiences can cause internal frictions with colleagues within the investment firm, the other topic which the chapter explores in detail.

Do bots have the capacity to influence the flow of political information over social media? This chapter answers this question through two methodological avenues: a) a qualitative analysis of how political bots were used to support United States presidential candidates and campaigns during the 2016 election, and b) a network analysis of bot influence on Twitter during the same event. Political bots are automated software programs that operate on social media, written to mimic real people in order to manipulate public opinion. The qualitative findings are based upon nine months of fieldwork on the campaign trail, including interviews with bot makers, digital campaign strategists, security consultants, campaign staff, and party officials. During the 2016 campaign, a bipartisan range of domestic and international political actors made use of political bots. The Republican Party, including both self-proclaimed members of the “alt-right” and mainstream members, made particular use of these digital political tools throughout the election. Meanwhile, public conversation from campaigners and government representatives is inconsistent about the political influence of bots. This chapter provides ethnographic evidence that bots affect information flows in two key ways: 1) by “manufacturing consensus,” or giving the illusion of significant online popularity in order to build real political support, and 2) by democratizing propaganda through enabling nearly anyone to amplify online interactions for partisan ends. We supplement these findings with a quantitative network analysis of the influence bots achieved within retweet networks of over 4 million tweets, collected during the 2016 US election. The results of this analysis confirm that bots reached positions of measurable influence during the 2016 US election.

The main objective of this work was to develop a study to obtain information on which characteristics influence the performance of a startup, including analyzing if companies that go through the acceleration process perform better than those that do not. As a research question, the idea was explored how to measure the performance of a company through cognitive aspects regarding the financial ratios of startups that went through the acceleration process or not, companies were investigated when they go through acceleration programs, are able to perform better when compared to companies in the same industry that did not enjoy the same initiatives, the proposal to create a performance indicator was also analyzed. Thus, a scenario was developed from which an analysis was conducted which, in turn, resulted in a Startup Performance Indicator (IDS), for purposes of comparison between companies that were accelerated and those that were not, because each Accelerator has a certain performance analysis criteria and keeps it secret about the core of your business. After the quantitative and qualitative analysis, the data collected in this research resulted in an indicative formula for the assessment of an index for Startups performance measurement to answer the research question. This work was carried out from 2014 to 2019 and was based on the scenario / ecosystem of startups and accelerators in Brazil, bringing a contextualization of the methods used by accelerators, within a global, national, regional and local context.

This volume investigates nuclear energy policies in Western Europe over the entire post-war period, giving special attention to the two most recent decades. It focuses on the interplay between voters’ attitudes, anti-nuclear movements, party competition, and coalition formation. Based on a mixed-methods approach using structured case studies, qualitative comparison, and quantitative analyses, it shows that the nature of party competition under given institutional contexts is a key driver for policy change. Part I introduces the practical and theoretical relevance of the topic. It outlines the reasoning of the major scientific contribution with regard to nuclear energy policies, and offers a theoretical alternative to the previous literature that has been predominantly movements-oriented. It also formulates a set of specific hypotheses on policy change and stability. Additionally, it provides core economic and political indicators of the changing role of nuclear energy in the countries. Part II consists of seven in-depth country case studies applying the outlined analytical perspective. Part III consists of an evaluation of the hypotheses, qualitative comparison of sixteen Western European cases (drawing, in addition to the country case studies on short narratives of the remaining countries) and of a quantitative assessment of the multivariate impact of factors for policy change.

Beginning approximately coincident with the advent of the global HIV pandemic, a growing number of qualitative and quantitative epidemiological studies have investigated the phenomenon of the injection of illicit psychoactive substances by individuals held within correctional settings. Empirical studies reveal that incarceration is a common experience for people who use illicit drugs, and injection while incarcerated (IWI) is an unintended if widespread consequence of the prohibition-based approach to regulating psychoactive drugs. Analyses of the spread of HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and other blood-borne pathogens among injection drug users have identified IWI as an important risk factor. Although a number of evidence-based responses have been developed to mitigate the risks associated with IWI, they are unavailable to the vast majority of imprisoned people who use injection drugs.

Abstract:
The book of well-known Russian scientists systematically presents a new theoretical approach to studying nature's fundamental phenomena using the hypothesis of the physical vacuum, or the ether, as some environment in which all the processes develop. In the proposed studies, the ether is represented as some one-component continuous media that satisfies generally accepted conservation laws: of matter and momentum. From the appropriate two equations, a number of consequences are obtained to which a physical interpretation is given. For the first time, 150 years after studies of Faraday and Maxwell, it is shown that these single premises mathematically give basic physical laws established experimentally: the Maxwell equations, the Lorentz force, the Gauss theorem; the laws: Coulomb, Biot - Savard, Ampere, electromagnetic induction, Ohm, Joule - Lenz, Wiedemann - Franz, universal gravitation, and etc. Details of mechanisms of many processes, that seemed previously paradoxical, have been disclosed. A method of the model substantiation adopted in the mathematical modeling methodology allows to conclude that the presented mathematical model of the ether adequately describes electromagnetic and gravitational processes. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of hundreds of known and new experimental facts allows in the methodology of physics, as science summarizing the experiments data, to confirm a conclusion about the existence of the ether (physical vacuum). The content of the book is based on the works of authors done during the last fourteen years. Many results are published for the first time. The book is intended for specialists in the field of electrodynamics, electrical engineering, gravity and kinetics, as well as for graduate students and students, interested in the fundamental principles of these scientific directions. This book is unique in terms of the comprehensive consideration of the problem and the depth of its analysis.

This chapter analyses the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (NREGA) in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The chapter reports on both quantitative (survey-based) and qualitative (interview-based) data conducted in the state. The strong movement organizations that played such a central role in the development of NREGA in Rajasthan were largely absent in Madhya Pradesh. The implications of NREGA for parties, clientelist politics, and voting behavior are also assessed. While Rajasthan experienced a change of party rule during the period studied (2008-2013), Madhya Pradesh did not – but neither this nor the variation in the strength of “movement” politics in the two states made a significant difference in the implementation of NREGA. Evidence from both states indicates that anxieties in the literature about civil society being “coopted” and losing autonomy when engaging cooperatively at times with governments are exaggerated.

Steve Kempster and Ken Parry introduce an unconventional research design and data collection method called co-constructed analytic auto-ethnography. This is based on a collaborative partnership between researcher and participant. The collaboration first involves an in-depth exploration of the participant’s socially constructed experience. The approach then reaches beyond that experience by testing the resonance of the insights generated with those of others who have been through similar experiences. Co-constructed analytic auto-ethnography can thus explore subjects that are difficult to access with traditional qualitative and quantitative methods. The approach is illustrated by a study that involved a collaboration between an academic and a senior manager, exploring the inter-related phenomena of emotional labour and authenticity in leadership practice. Dismissing criticism of auto-ethnography as ‘confessional tales’, the chapter concludes that this is a rigorous, insightful, and valuable research approach.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to analyze the perception of teachers, managers and family members of the municipal and state education system in a city in the Metropolitan Region of Recife / PE regarding the quality of basic education, difficulties faced, student performance and the process of implementing the civic-military model in the the public school. 64 subjects participated in the study, which were subdivided into 13 managers, 30 teachers working in elementary and high school and 21 parents / guardians of a municipal school and a state school. The instruments used for data collection were 3 (three) electronic questionnaires developed in Google forms, containing objective and subjective questions, directed to managers, teachers and parents / guardians. Quantitative data were treated statistically by the PRISMA for Windows program - Version 4.03 and analyzed by the Chi-square test, with p <0.05, expressed in percentages, and the data referring to the qualitative evaluation were treated through analysis of content, with data represented qualitatively and expressed in a table. It was found in this study, from the perception of teachers, managers and parents about basic education, that the main problems faced are associated with the low interest of students in studies (69.2%; 76.7%, p= 0.032) and lack of adequate structure (50%, p= 0.038). Regarding the contribution of the civic-military model, the study pointed out the improvement of students' behavior in the family, school and social environment (71.4% p= 0.053), improving the quality of basic education with an emphasis on access, permanence and in learning (66.7% p= 0.036), makes the teacher feel valued (61.9% p= 0.042), contributes to preventing violence in the school environment and improving school performance (66.7% p= 0.024), contributes to the promotion of society's moral, civic and patriotic values (81.0 p= 0.031), and based on the current model (55%; 54.2% p= 0.005) of teachers and parents feel dissatisfied. We conclude that the civic-military model can contribute to reducing evasion, valuing the teacher, improving student behavior, improving the quality of basic education with an emphasis on access, permanence and learning and contributing to the promotion of society’s family, civic and patriotic end moral values.

Maximal intensity is any activity where the exercise-supplying metabolism demonstrates a higher anaerobic ATP yield than the oxidative phosphorylation metabolism. Ethical considerations prevent muscle biopsy techniques in young people, resulting in indirect inferences about anaerobic metabolism during exercise being applied to mostly mechanically derived measurements. These measurements are largely based on cycle ergometry tests like the Wingate test. Compared to aerobic data, maximal-intensity data sets are infrequently published, female data across all age ranges are lacking, and application is limited by a focus on sports performance rather than health. However, regardless of how these data are analysed, children and adolescent performance is inferior to adults. Most studies attempt to explain this from a quantitative muscle (and age) perspective, while explanations of qualitative factors, e.g. hormonal and neuromuscular, have proved elusive. Future studies should focus on the mechanisms underpinning maximal-intensity exercise as an important component of everyday physical activity.

Abstract:
The Cases Within Trials (CWT) model combines the randomized clinical trial (RCT) research design, based on quantitative group research, with richly and qualitatively detailed systematic case studies involving contrasting outcomes drawn from the experimental condition of the RCT. Chapter 1 of the book provides the broad historical and methodological context out of which the CWT method developed, including the recent dramatic growth of mixed-methods approaches in psychotherapy research generally, with an associated increase in their credibility and rigor. Chapter 2 presents the details of the CWT method and its application to Chapters 3–6, which present four specific projects that concretely illustrate the CWT method. The four projects vary across such dimensions as theoretical orientation and type of mental disorder. To facilitate comparison across projects, each is organized in three main sections, including results gained from the RCT, results gained from the case studies, and a synthesis of the two types of knowledge. Each project concludes with a commentary by an outside expert (or expert team) in the theoretical and disorder focus of the project. Chapter 7 presents an outside perspective on the four projects from a research team highly experienced in conducting and thinking about traditional RCTs. In view of the four projects as a whole, Chapter 8 presents the editors’ summary and analysis of themes and guidelines for the future embodied in the knowledge gained from the four projects.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how stylistic signals can be derived from high-frequency features and how the usage, or nonusage, of those features was susceptible to influences that are external to the so-called “authorial style,” external influences such as genre, time, and gender. These aspects of style were explored using a controlled corpus of 106 British novels where genre was a key point of analysis. The chapter first provides an overview of statistical or quantitative authorship attribution before discussing the author's project, in which he analyzed the degree to which novelistic genres express a distinguishable stylistic signal by focusing on the distribution of novels in a corpus based on their genres and decades of publication. Through a series of experiments, he demonstrates the use of the classification methodology as a way of measuring the extent to which factors beyond an individual author's personal style may play a role in determining the linguistic usage and style of the resulting text.

The work Discursive memory on gender violence in the voice of women with disabilities originated from the Master of Arts in Literature research developed by Flávia Pieretti Cardoso, under the guidance of professors Maria Leda Pinto and Léia Teixeira Lacerda, at the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul. In her role as an interpreter of Brazilian Sign Language at the Casa da Mulher Brasileira and her experience with women from the Association of Women with Disabilities of Mato Grosso do Sul, Flávia was concerned about the invisibility and lack of accessible data and information in the area of gender and disability. The concern resulted in this book, which analyses the speeches of women with disabilities living in Campo Grande / MS, from the theme of gender violence in order to seek possibilities to implement actions to face this type of violence. The theoretical path is based on qualitative research and the corpus analysis grounded on French Discourse Analysis (FDA) studies, as well as on scholars from the Bakhtin Circle, on the analysis of texts of oral communication and the gender and violence area. The analyses presented will enable the reader to conclude that girls and women with disabilities are subject to double exclusion and vulnerability – for having a disability and for being women – by the sexist and capacitist speeches of “power” and “truth”. Therefore, it is a matter of urgency that the Brazilian authorities of power implement effective public programs and policies aimed at the specificities of those subjects.
