Abstract:
Abstract The corpus of epic material produced in the New Persian language, best known by Ferdowsi’s Shāhnāma, is preoccupied with narrating Iran’s past. In this article, the production milieu of the epic material during post-Conquest Iran is explored. This is undertaken by tracing the sources of the Sistani Cycle of Epics, a body of literature, which recounts the stories of Rostam, his ancestors and his progeny. The discussion of the sources of this body of epics reveals what seems to be an abundant interest in narrating multiple, diverse and contradictory events of Iran’s pre-Islamic past. The existence of a plethora of varying narrations raises several questions such as the impetus for transmission of these varying narratives, and the nature of Iranian historiography.

Abstract:
THE 'GENUINE' HISTORICAL NOVEL AND THE 'GENUINE' SCOTTIAN EPIC POEM IN 'MODERN TIMES' For over a century, it has been taken for granted that David Jacob van Lennep's Discourse on the significance of Holland's soil and antiquities for sentiment and imagination (1827) inaugurated the historical novel as a specific literary genre in the Netherlands. The historical epic is supposed to have benefited similarly. In this article I inquire whether the conventional separation between historical novels and epics before and after 1827 does in fact rest on objective and tangible characteristics of these works. If we were to examine the entire corpus of historicising literature between 1780 and 1940, would we or would we not encounter a continuous developmental line? A preliminary investigation of some specific cases suggests that, as a genre, the historical epic has vanished completely, whereas the historical novel remained as vital as before up to World War II. Its objective, however, was no longer the re-enactment of the past but the dissolution of the separation between past and present.

Allan, William. "Divine justice and cosmic order in early Greek Epic." Journal of Hellenic Studies 126 (November 2006): 1–35. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0075426900007631.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the ethical and theological universe of the Homeric epics, and shows that the patterns of human and divine justice which they deploy are also to be found throughout the wider corpus of early Greek hexameter poetry. Although most scholars continue to stress the differences between theIliadandOdysseywith regard to divine justice, these come not (as is often alleged) from any change in the gods themselves but from theOdyssey'speculiar narrative structure, with its focus on one hero and his main divine patron and foe. Indeed, the action of theIliadembodies a system of norms and punishments that is no different from that of theOdyssey. Values such as justice are shown to be socially constituted in each epic on both the divine and human planes, and each level, it is argued, displays not only a hierarchy of power (and the resulting tensions), but also a structure of authority. In addition, the presentation of the gods in the wider hexameter corpus of Hesiod, the Epic Cycle and the Homeric Hymns is analysed, revealing a remarkably coherent tradition in which the possibility of divine conflict is combined with an underlying cosmic order. Finally, consideration of Near Eastern myths relating cosmic order to justice brings out the distinctiveness of the Greek system as a whole and, in particular, of the way it uses the divine society under Zeus's authority as a comprehensive explanatory model of the world.

Abstract:
Certain types of introductory formulas typical of klephtic epic songs are synoptically demonstrated and analyzed. The introduction outlines the historical development of this category of folk songs, based on occasionally opposing views of literary historians and scholars concerned with the study of Greek folklore. The analysis, performed on a selected corpus of Greek klephtic epic songs, reveals basic structural principles that the anonymous folk singer abided by whilst composing these songs.

Abstract:
Abstract This article introduces EPTIC (the European Parliament Translation and Interpreting Corpus), a new bidirectional (English<>Italian) corpus of interpreted and translated EU Parliament proceedings. Built as an extension of the English<>Italian subsection of EPIC (the European Parliament Interpreting Corpus), EPTIC is an intermodal corpus featuring the pseudo-parallel outputs of interpreting and translation processes, aligned to each other and to the corresponding source texts (speeches by MEPs and their written up versions). As a first attempt at unearthing the potential of EPTIC, we investigate lexical simplification replicating the methodology proposed by Laviosa (1998a; 1998b), but extending it to encompass both a monolingual comparable and an intermodal perspective. Our results indicate that the mediation process reduces complexity in both modes of language production and both language directions, with interpreters simplifying the input more than translators, and evidence of simplification being more lexical in English and more lexico-syntactic in Italian.

This article is based on folklore studies of oral epic tradition in the Serb-Croat (or, depending on territory, Croat-Serbian) language which was common to the majority of former Yugoslavia population (in fact, all but Slovenes and Macedonians). The corpus of 1200 oral epic songs were chosen among other folklore genres because of their strong ideological position which made them the only form of oral literature where town appears as a human habitation clearly defined in time and space. In all other forms of traditional culture, the urban space is imagined and represented either as a miraculous or elfin place (as in fairy-tales, ritual poetry, short literary forms, et al), or as a notion with a name but without a content (as in etiological and other legends). In contrast, the epic poetry builds the image of urban space.

Nymphs appear frequently in the corpus of Virgilian poetry. Careful consideration of the place of nymphs in Virgil’s Eclogues and (in particular) his Georgics reveals how the poet utilizes these quasi-divine figures as important elements of his exposition of both the nature of Roman identity and the demands incurred in composing his Homeric-Callimachean epic.

Abstract A large corpus of terracotta plaques bearing the image of the demon Humbaba/ Huwawa, a major character in the Gilgamesh epic, have been excavated from late third and early second millennium BCE contexts at numerous sites in Mesopotamia. This essay explores the motif of Humbaba’s severed head within its ancient Near Eastern context in order to demonstrate that the head differs from other images of decapitation, as a representation whose supernatural power is unaffected by death. It concludes that the terracotta plaques were interpreted in sophisticated and multivalent ways by ancient audiences: as visual narratives representing a key moment in the epic; as apotropaic images displayed to guard transitions; and as important omens recorded in the past, which had the potential to reappear in the present.

Abstract:
University of British ColumbiaThis article investigates varṇa as an embodied and spatialized social practice in the Sanskrit Mahābhārata, with a focus on the epic subnarratives of Viśvāmitra, the legendary king who became a Brahman. Adopting a post-Dumontian position that the articulation of social status is always a political act, the Mahābhārata’s treatment of Viśvāmitra is analyzed as a literary attempt to secure the social place of Brahmanhood in post-Mauryan India. Two specific narratives are taken up for comparative study: first the kāmadhenu legend—the squabble with Vasiṣṭha that led to Viśvāmitra’s Brahmanhood—and then an altogether different story in which a mixup by Viśvāmitra’s sister Satyavatī meant that he had always been a Brahman by birth. Two distinct interpretive voices are heard in the same epic—one extolling Viśvāmitra’s extraordinary ascetic power, and another, louder one minimizing his realworld impact by insisting that his varṇa change never actually happened. Developing the concept of ‘textual performance’ to explain how fluid legendary material was embedded into the fixed epic corpus, this article argues that the Mahābhārata utilized counter-normative figures like Viśvāmitra to articulate alternative voices and possibilities, but within a carefully regulated epic storyworld that naturalized varṇa as an everyday social practice.

Full text
Abstract:
IS) dallo spagnolo all’italiano.

Abstract:

In Brazil and Europe, after knowing the production of literary works, of Dionysia Gonçalves Pinto (1810-1885), better known as Nísia Floresta, which along with various books published, also wrote a epic poem indianista and indigenous, in the nineteenth century, entitled A lágrima de um Caeté (1849). We decided to produce a scientific research, professional perspective, to make better education and learning in Portuguese Language, with one literary text. So we decided to develop studies A lágrima de um Caeté of Nisia Floresta as one sensitive and possible corpus for a education or as way to mediate literary text reading times among young people 13-17 years old. Then our pedagogical action ran a critical way, we base ourselves in scientific research of Anazildo Vasconcelos da Silva and him theory known as Literary Semiotization of Discourse, later developed also by the writer Christina Ramalho, and literary historiography studies of Constance Lima Duarte. Other intellectuals like Tzvetan Todorov, Umberto Eco and Roland Barthes, added to Romero, Marisa Lajolo, Regina Zilberman and Antonio Candido, among others. Our pedagogical and literary project entitled "Poetry ilustrations 2015" to show for classroom that learn about skills and competencies for identify the "epic heroism" in epic poems. We promote a production illustrations, created from stanzas or episodes in A lágrima de um Caeté. We published and illustrated two versions of A lágrima de um Caeté: one e-book, available on our website on the Internet; otherwise it was a printed book for to restore the collections in school library. Therefore, to strengthen our teaching practices to encourage reading, we perform one ludic game: "Ask and you will know". Then, we aim to contribute to a critical review on school debates, especially of equal rights issues, related to culture and your ethnics problems in Brazil.

Full text
Abstract:
After experiencing an early phase of vivid interest in the 1980s and the 1990s, the search for "universals" of translation and interpreting, i.e. general features of translated and interpreted language, seems to have slipped into a phase of stagnation in the past few years. On the one hand, it seems questionable to speak of "universal" features of translation and interpreting, since both activities are inseparable from their direction and context. On the other hand, the search for "universals" can be regarded as an attempt to universalize historically and culturally determined practices. The present study focuses on Sonja Tirkkonen-Condit's "unique items hypothesis", according to which translators tend to underrepresent target-language specific items, i.e. items that lack a straightforward (lexical or grammatical) counterpart in the source language, and to replace them with alternative items, which are not incorrect, but less idiomatic and more adherent to the structure of the source language. The present study extends the hypothesis to interpreting and sets out to test it on a possible "unique item" of the language pair Italian-English, namely the 's-genitive. To this end, the 's-genitives are extracted from four sub-corpora of the European Parliament Interpreting Corpus - EPIC (interpretations from Italian into English, original English speeches, official translations from Italian into English and official transcriptions of original English speeches). The present study compares the frequency of the 's-genitives across the four sub-corpora from a monolingual intermodal perspective, to check whether interpreted and translated English actually underrepresents 's (while overrepresenting "of", which is closer to the Italian preposition "di") and whether there are differences between interpreting and translation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation aims at investigating differences in phraseological patterns in translated and interpreted language, on the basis of the intermodal corpus EPTIC_01_2011 and focusing on Italian and French. First of all, an overview is offered of the main studies and theories about corpus linguistics and collocations: the notion of corpus is defined and a typology (focusing on intermodal corpora) is presented, before moving on to the linguistic phenomenon of collocation and its investigation through corpus linguistics methods. Second, the general structure of EPTIC_01_2011 is presented, including the ways in which its texts have been assembled, edited through ad hoc conventions and enriched with metadata. The methodology proposed by Durrant and Schmitt (2009), slightly edited to fit the present study, has been used to extract and compare noun+adjective/adjective+noun bigrams from a quantitative point of view. A subset of these data have then been extracted and analysed manually. The results of the study are presented through graphs and examples, with an in-depth discussion of the bigrams considered. Lastly, the data collected are analysed and categorised in terms of shifts occurring in translation and in interpreting, potential causes are discussed and ideas for further research and for the development of the EPTIC corpus are sketched.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the differences in the phraseological patterns used by Italian and English translators and interpreters through the intermodal corpus EPTIC_01_2011. First, the most important studies and theories about corpus linguistics and collocations are introduced. After defining the notion of “corpus”, the different types of corpora are categorised, giving particular attention to the intermodal one. Then the dissertation focuses on a description of collocations, as defined by the main linguistics scholars, and it describes some attempts to apply corpus linguistics to the study of collocations. Secondly, EPTIC_01_2011 is presented, with a description of its structure and of the text editing process carried out applying specific editing conventions and adding a set of metadata before each text. The analysis of collocation candidate bigrams (adjective+noun/noun+adjective) from a quantitative point of view, was conducted applying a methodology adapted from Durrant and Schmitt (2009). Qualitative analysis was also performed on a subsection of the data. The results of the study are presented through examples and graphs, giving particular attention to the interpretation of the data analysed from a qualitative perspective. Finally, results are summarised and categorised, and suggestions are made concerning the diverging choices made in translation and interpreting. The final section concentrates on further studies that could be carried out in the future, as well as on suggestions for corpus enlargement.

Abstract:
Subject of this thesis is the sixth book of Flavius Cresconius Corippus’ Iohannis. This section is focused on the preparation and the progress of a big battle: the Moorish tribes reassemble and form a new coalition, a fact that comes with a total subversion of the narrative balance. An Italian full translation will be provided as well as the commentary of Coripp. Ioh. 6, 1-126. A rich introduction - divided into two main sections and preceding both the translation and commentary - primarily concerns Corippus’ historical and cultural background (to the extent that it is possible, considering the lack of information available) and the tradition of the Iohannis through the only surviving manuscript, the Trivultianus 686. A brief reference ismade to the manuscript tradition of Corippus’ panegyric In laudem Iustini. The complex issue of the literary genre is approached, since the Iohannis contains several elements arising from the epic genre, along with a clear encomiastic purpose torwards John Troglita and the Emperor Justinian himself. The main literary models are addressed as well as the ideological and religious framework, the language, the style and the metre of the Iohannis. After that the sixth book will be examined with regard to: literary composition (between history and literary stereotypes), role within the poem, epic shapes, historical interest (use of the indigenous ethnonyms; Byzantine policy towards the rebel tribes; Moorish value system and shared spirituality)

Abstract:
From a corpus of Greek epics known in antiquity as the “Epic Cycle,” six poems dealt with the same Trojan War mythology as the Homeric poems. Though they are now lost, these poems were much read and much discussed in ancient times, not only for their content but for their mysterious relationship with the more famous works attributed to Homer. This study shows that these lost poems belonged, compositionally, to essentially the same tradition as the Homeric poems. It demonstrates that various compositional devices well-known from the Homeric epics were also fundamental to the narrative construction of these later works. Yet while the “cyclic” poets constructed their works using the same traditional devices as Homer, they used these to different ends and with different results. The essential difference between cyclic and Homeric epics lies not in the fundamental building blocks from which they are constructed, but in the scale of these components relative to the overall construction of poems. This sheds important light on the early history of epic as a genre, since it is likely that these devices originally developed to provide large-scale structure to shorter poems and have been put to quite different use in the composition of the monumental Homeric epics. This study includes many new suggestions about the overall form of lost cyclic epics and about the meaning and context of the few surviving verse fragments.

Abstract:
The variety of topics in the surviving works of Philostratus makes generalizations about the corpus as a whole difficult. Two biographical works take contrary approaches. The Lives of the Sophists (in which he coined the term “Second Sophistic”) constructs a partial history of Greek rhetorical culture, while the Life of Apollonius of Tyana transforms the portrait of a philosopher into a condensation of Hellenic tradition. In the Heroicus the foundational text of Homeric epic is reimagined through hero cult and Homeric correction, and in the Imagines the mythic past is reconstituted in ekphrasis of artworks. The defining trait of these works is a profound and creative engagement with the Hellenic past, in which readers are shown interpretive approaches to the traditions of Greek art, literature, and religion, and allowed the opportunity to hone their own hermeneutic skills.

Abstract:
This chapter provides the foundation of the first section of the book and provides a detailed examination of the history of Hercules on screen. The Hercules corpus is separated into three clusters: European ancients from 1958 to 1965; the 1990s, which included the Hercules TV series and the Disney film; and finally the most recent productions of 2014. The chapter places the most recent productions in a tradition of the onscreen Hercules. It demonstrates the extensive scope of the Hercules corpus and reveals the inherent difficulties in determining what is part of the mythic tradition and what is not.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how fantastic tales about Alexander's life and adventures after he had conquered the “known world,” were current soon after his death. Very possibly these were to some degree modelled on the early epic and heroic legends in Greek literature. The new stories seem to find their origin mainly in Ptolemaic Egypt, which is hardly surprising given Alexander's associations there in life and death. Such documents provide writers and artists with a corpus of tales about the mystic east which were to echo in later centuries through the works of Marco Polo, the stories of Sinbad the Sailor, and Sir John de Mandeville's record of imaginary journeys in the east, and much else.

Abstract:
Harris tells the story of Father Thomas Stephens, whose interactions with the landscape, language, and food of India refashioned his English body. By unpacking the phrase ‘hi mho ji kudd’, a Konkani translation of ‘hoc est corpus meum’ (which is inscribed beneath the altar in a Jesuit church in Goa), Harris provides an account of a more worldly transformation than that offered by the Eucharist. As the author of the epic poem Kristapurana (Story of Christ), Stephens participated in the ‘Jesuit tradition of inculturation’. And yet, Stephens’s love of the Marathi language ‘Indianized’ not only the Christianity he preached but also his own body. Stephens’s poetic use of the kalpataru, the coconut tree, as Eden’s Tree of Life, invokes a daily experience of interacting with Goan coconuts, underscoring the recalibration of Stephens’s flesh ‘into something Indian’.

Abstract:
The final chapter begins by reconsidering the grand ends that Milton sets for his poetry: to “justify the ways of God to men.” Criticism has routinely portrayed a Milton who, because of his sublime intentions, must either reform or reject the disreputable pleasures and instabilities of the humanist and romance traditions that he inherits from writers like Sidney and Spenser. The chapter argue that with this increase in the grandeur of Milton’s poetic aspirations comes an increase in the risk of falling and thus failing. This risk of error and vanity, the chapter demonstrates, accounts for many of the structural instabilities, textual cruxes, and unresolved questions in Milton’s corpus, questions that it explores by attending to the forms and figures of un-sublimity, waste, and heterogeneity in his epic masterpiece Paradise Lost. Drawing on philosophers and theorists such as Hegel, Bataille, Lacan, Derrida, de Man, and Edelman, the chapter counters a tradition of scholarship that strives to resolve dialectically the ever-present friction between Milton’s poetry and his intentions. Against these sublimating tendencies and gestures in Milton scholarship, the chapter attempts to bring out the persistent, unsublatable negativity that pervades Paradise Lost.

Abstract:
The current study is dedicated to anthroponymy in the Middle High German epic poem “Song of the Nibelungs”, delving into the problem of rendering anthroponyms with detoponymic bynames. It was carried out with the aim to develop strategies for their depiction in the Latvian language in order to form a scientific basis for the translation of this epic poem. Methods such as quantitative and qualitative corpus analysis and empirical research were used to find out how anthroponyms with detoponymic bynames are realized in the “Song of the Nibelungs”, what is their role in text structure and message and how these properties can be reproduced in the target language. It has been found that detoponyms not only provide information about the origins of epic characters, but also perform formally stylistic functions, and their reproduction requires creative solutions to preserve their unique features. In conclusion, practical examples of the implementation of rendering strategies in translation are presented, which clearly show the close connections between anthroponyms with detoponymic bynames and the structure of the text and justify the choice of specific approaches

Abstract:
The high heat flux and strong thermal coupling in the 3D ICs has limited the performance gains that would otherwise be feasible in 3D structures. The common practice of adopting worst-case design margins is in part responsible for this limitation since average-case performance would be limited by worst-case thermal design margins. The coupling between temperature and leakage power exacerbates this effect. However, worst-case thermal conditions are not the common state across the package at runtime. We argue for the co-design of the package, architecture, and power management based on the multi-physics interactions between temperature, power consumption and system performance. This approach suggests an adaptive architecture that accommodates the thermal coupling between layers and leads to increased energy efficiency over a wider operating voltage range and therefore higher performance. In this paper, we target at a 3D multicore architecture where the cores reside on one die and the last level cache (LLC) resides on the other. The DRAM stack may be stacked on top of the package (e.g., 3D) or in the same package (e.g., 2.5D). We propose a novel adaptive cache structure — the constant performance model (CPM) cache — based on voltage adaptations to temperature variations. We construct a HSPICE model for the SRAM to explore the relationship between temperature, supply voltage, and the circuit delay in the context of the LLC. This model is used to investigate, characterize, and analyze the effect of the temperature-delay dependence of the SRAM LLC configuration on the system-level performance and energy efficiency. This analysis gives rise to an intelligent scheme for dynamic voltage regulation in the LLC cache that is sensitive to the temperature of the individual cache banks. Each cache bank is thermally coupled to the associated cores and thus is sensitive to the local core-level power management. We show that this local adaptation to the temperature-delay dependence leads to a significant power reduction in the LLC cache, and improvement of system energy efficiency computed as energy per instruction (EPI). We evaluate our approach using a cycle-level, full system simulation model of a 16-core x86 homogenous microarchitecture in 16nm technology that boots a full Linux operating system and executes application binaries. The advantages of the proposed adaptive LLC structure illustrate the potential of the co-design of the package, architecture, and power management in future 3D multicore architectures.
