This paper introduces InterCorp, a parallel corpus including texts in Czech and 27 other languages, available for online searches via a web interface. After discussing some issues and merits of a multilingual resource we argue that it has an important role especially for languages with fewer native speakers, supporting both comparative research and studies of the language from the perspective of other languages. We proceed with an overview of the corpus — the strategy and criteria for including new texts, the representation of available languages and text types, linguistic annotation, and a sk

Research material comes from the resources of the OpenSubtitles website with non-professional subtitling. The research material was analysed using KonText – the main search tool in InterCorp. As a starting point, the author analysed a dictionary entry for the Polish exclamation cholera in a traditional Polish translation dictionary like Polish-Czech Dictionary (Oliva). Diminutives in Czech and Polish with emphasis on the description of their use in so-called interlanguageThe text presents an analysis of diminutives with regard to problems of their use by non-native speakers, exemplified by native speakers of Polish. The reason of this specific comparison is the formal and semantic closeness of the two languages, which is often the cause of negative transfer. The analysis is based on the comparison of parallel Czech and Polish texts included in the InterCorp corpus and is further supported by the elicitation of the use of selected lexemes by Polish students.

The paper explores the applicability of a method of contrastive corpus-supported research which relies on the use of salient translation counterparts as markers of a particular meaning. The markers are identified among the Czech counterparts of the individual semantic sub-classes of English copular verbs, and subsequently used to trace other, structurally diverse, English constructions which convey the same meaning as the copulas in question (constructions expressing epistemic stance or resultative meaning). Since the repertoire of copular verbs is much narrower in Czech than in English, the t

Abstract This paper is a contribution to a hitherto unexplored area in English-Czech contrastive semantics. It examines differences in the construal of walking, the most prototypical type of human locomotion. Based on the data from InterCorp, a synchronic parallel translation corpus, it presents a cognitive oriented analysis of the semantics of English walk and its nearest Czech counterparts, i.e. jít and kráčet. Despite their apparent commonalities, the verbs in question do not construe walking in the same way. In contrast to jít, the construal of a motion situation in walk and kráčet involve

Abstract The aims of this paper are to analyse differences in the degree of lexical variation (type/token ratio and hapax/token ratio) of reporting verbs in reporting clauses placed medially or in postposition in English, French and Czech fiction and to evaluate their consequences in translation, especially in regard to explicitation/implicitation. We expect that, in translations from a language with a low degree of lexical variation of reporting verbs into a language with a high degree of lexical variation, the frequency and the degree of explicitation will be higher than in translations invo
