Interests in how variables may relate to each other and how systems of relationships among variables may be at play often underlie the questions music education researchers pose. This chapter describes basic design and analysis considerations in research that involves the systematic investigation of whether and how variables are related; in other words, correlational research. The chapter poses correlational research as an extension of the book’s previous discussion of descriptive research. Chapter 1 introduces three categories of time series designs: descriptive, correlational, and interrupted time series designs. The evolution from a two-validity system to a four-validity system (including internal, external, statistical conclusion, and construct validities) is then described. Situations where the added expense of a time series design is warranted fall into two overlapping categories. The first category consists of situations where the nature of the underlying phenomenon is obscured by trends and cycles. A well-constructed time series model may reveal the nature of the underlyi

This article discusses how transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be used to study the pathophysiological substrata of pediatric neurological and neurobehavioural disorders and to provide practical guidance for future research. It outlines the substantial challenges inherent in studying in vivo the neurobiology of pediatric neurobehavioural disorders, such as safety, quantitative versus categorical measures, and challenges in correlational studies. It discusses ways in which TMS generates quantitative measures that may function as endophenotypes for neurobehavioural disorders. Combining T

This article focuses on the design of Internet-based experiments. It discusses the five criteria of a theory, between- versus within-subject designs, representative design, and systextual design. The results of psychological experiments can and do depend on the experimental designs used to establish causal effects. For example, the effect of a variable can be opposite in within- as opposed to between-subjects designs. It can also be reversed when the correlations among independent variables are manipulated via systextual design. These findings mean that the conclusions one draws need to be res

A threat to external validity is any factor that limits the generalizability of an observed result. Unlike all threats to statistical conclusion and internal validities and some threats to construct validity, threats to external validity cannot ordinarily be controlled by design. Nor is there any disagreement on how threats to external validity should be controlled. In most instances, it can only be controlled by replication?—across subjects, situations and time frames. This seldom happens, unfortunately, because the academic incentive structure discourages replication. The contemporary “repro

Focusing on the late 20th century onward, this book brings to light the ways in which design as a material form has underscored cultural, social and economic changes across Asia. The Dynamics of Modern Asian Design provides a deeper and more enhanced understanding of material culture in Asia through analysis of examples of ceramics, electronic items, fashion, furniture, interior design, architecture and ornaments from across countries such as China, Hong Kong, India, Japan and South Korea. Authors explore the production of objects as agents in modern material life, moving beyond their roles as
