Abstract:
This article focuses on the development of trans-European corridors of mobility to the east of Europe. It argues that the European Union's infrastructures are intent upon erasing the past and integrating the new places with as little tension as possible, for economic purposes only. Running counter to this late-capitalist investment is the collective video project Timescapes, which includes Angela Melitopoulos' road movie Corridor X, on the history of the Balkan Highway between Germany and Turkey. The deeply historical and transnational networking practices at the heart of this art project offer us a possible paradigm for rethinking what Europe could mean in an age of EU enlargement to the east.

The Closing of Kunstania is a short tale about art that has been hidden away from its audience in a garden behind high walls. In this refuge, there are neither audio-guides nor art education nor interactive apps. Kunstania reminds us of another possibility to encounter art without mediators, without an aura of masterpieces, and without the promise of an extraordinary event. Instead, a way through a labyrinth of rooms and corridors, where, perhaps, things and tales are stored, but must be found on your own, wandering, returning and recollecting.

Abstract:
With the accelerating process of urbanization, the greening areas in high density cities are becoming less and less, and the aerial greening provides a possible way for the update of the urban building headspace greening. Based on this, the application of aerial greening in the urban headspace was studied. Starting from the plant, water, landscape sketch, pavement and other construction elements, the ecological art planning and design of the urban building headspace was studied. Then, the transformation of an old factory was studied, and the rain-flood gardens and infiltration floors linked to biological corridors were introduced in the high flood risk areas. In the building headspace, a rainwater harvesting system and an air garden were designed, and the ecological planning of aerial walkway was carried out to the front abandoned viaduct. The practice proves that the introduction of ecological science and technology and art culture in the urban headspace plays an important role in purifying urban air and increasing urban greening.

Abstract:
Since passenger demand in urban transit systems is asymmetrically distributed across different periods in a day and different geographic locations across the cities, the tradeoff between vehicle operating costs and service quality has been a persistent problem in transit operational design. The emerging modular vehicle technology offers us a new perspective to solve this problem. Based on this concept, we propose a variable-capacity operation approach with modular transits for shared-use corridors, in which both dispatch headway and vehicle capacity are decision variables. This problem is rigorously formulated as a mixed integer linear programming model that aims to minimize the overall system cost, including passenger waiting time costs and vehicle operating costs. Because the proposed model is linear, the state-of-the-art commercial solvers (e.g., Gurobi) can be used to obtain the optimal solution of the investigated problem. With numerical experiments, we demonstrate the feasibility of the mathematical model, verify the effectiveness of the proposed model in reducing overall system costs in transit systems, as well as the robustness of the proposed model with different parameter settings.

Abstract:
In this paper, a trajectory control approach using model predictive control is proposed for cooperative (automated) vehicles. This control approach optimizes accelerations of the controlled connected and automated vehicle (CAV) platoon along a corridor with signalized intersections. The objectives of the proposed approach are to maximize the throughput first and optimize comfort, travel delay, and fuel consumption simultaneously after that. The throughput is determined according to the maximal number of CAVs that can pass the intersection during the green phase. Safety is included by penalizing smaller gaps between CAVs in the running cost. The red phase is taken into account as a virtual vehicle at the stop-line during the red time, thus the safe gap penalty with the virtual vehicle causes the first-stopping vehicle to decelerate or even stop facing the red phase. The acceleration and speed are constrained within the upper and lower bounds. The proposed approach is flexible in dealing with platoon merging, splitting, stopping, and queue-discharging characteristics at signalized intersections. Finally, the proposed control approach is verified by simulation under a baseline scenario and four scenarios, which consider signal settings and the anticipation of the red phase. The simulation results demonstrate the benefits of the proposed control approach on fuel savings, compared with the state-of-art approach which used the virtual vehicle term without anticipation. The adjustments of signal parameters in Scenario 3 and Scenario 4 demonstrate the applicability of the control approach under actuated signal control.

The authors estimate migration flows of women in the 1990s at a global scale and provide a description of these migratory movements. The authors produce these data combining the 2011 World Bank Global Migrant Stock Database and state-of-the-art techniques to estimate migratory flows from stock data. The authors examine these flows in light of the global demand for care workers in the 1990s, showing that migration flows of women in that decade map onto the global care chains discussed in the qualitative literature. The data show that feminized migration flows in the period under analysis have a strong regional component. Yet the data also show that some of the largest feminized migratory corridors are in fact cross-regional.

Abstract:
Purpose – The authors aim to propose a novel plane extraction algorithm for geometric 3D indoor mapping with range scan data. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed method utilizes a divide-and-conquer step to efficiently handle huge amounts of point clouds not in a whole group, but in forms of separate sub-groups with similar plane parameters. This method adopts robust principal component analysis to enhance estimation accuracy. Findings – Experimental results verify that the method not only shows enhanced performance in the plane extraction, but also broadens the domain of interest of the plane registration to an information-poor environment (such as simple indoor corridors), while the previous method only adequately works in an information-rich environment (such as a space with many features). Originality/value – The proposed algorithm has three advantages over the current state-of-the-art method in that it is fast, utilizes more inlier sensor data that does not become contaminated by severe sensor noise and extracts more accurate plane parameters.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of mapping the biotopes of the “Kreidova Flora” Nature Reserve, which is one of the key areas of the eco-network of the local level of the newly created Kramatorsk district. This district includes almost entirely “Sviati Hory” National Nature Park, an object of the Nature Reserve Fund of Ukraine (NRF) with the highest amount of estimated points for a comprehensive assessment of sozological value, which belongs to a group of the first class. Two NRF objects (including the “Kreidova Flora” Nature Reserve) were from the group of the second class: one from the group of the third: nine from the group of the fifth class: and one from a group of the sixth class. The total number of points of the studied NRF objects of the newly created district is 465, which is a significant indicator. The key areas of the local level eco-network are the NRF with adjacent natural areas, which together form clusters. The ecological corridors of the local level are the river network of the district and the network of forest belts. As buffer zones for river-type eco-corridors, it is proposed to consider a minimum 200-meter water protection zone in accordance with Art. 87 of the Water Code of Ukraine. Restoration areas of the local econetwork of Kramatorsk district should be all areas with disturbed natural landscape (abandoned quarries, heaps), as well as abandoned agricultural lands, where it is proposed to introduce revalidation measures. The obtained maps and databases of distribution of different types of biotopes on the territory of the reserve will be the basis for its management plan, and this technique can be used within other structural elements of ecological networks. According to the same principle, it is considered necessary to conduct research in the entire study area, as well as other areas of Donetsk region.

Abstract:
The need to respond to increasing flood risk, climate change, and rapid urban development has shaped innovative policies and practices of spatial planning in many countries over recent decades. As an instrumental–technical intervention, planning is mainly used to improve the physical environment (through concepts such as regulating waterproof facades of architecture, setting buffering zones, and designing green–blue corridors). However, the implementation of the proposed physical interventions is often challenging and necessitates assistance from practices such as climate assessment, policy disciplines, civil societies, and economic resources. These extensive perspectives have spawned many new research domains in the realm of spatial planning. This paper provides a review of the recent developments in flood resilience, risk management, and climate adaptation; based on this, it positions planning research and practice within these works of literature. Four clusters of thought are identified, mainly in the European and American scholarship of the last two decades. They are environmental concerns, disaster management concerns, socio-economic concerns, and institutional concerns. Current planning research concentrates on disaster management in the underlying belief that planning is functionally efficient. The attention to environmental concerns, socio-economic concerns, and institutional concerns of planning research remains insufficient but has been growing. This, in turn, enlarges the scope of planning research and indicates future directions for study. These new concerns relate to spatial planning’s ability to operate effectively in a multi-sectoral setting, despite limited resources and in the face of uncertain risk.

Canadian Geotechnical Journal 52, no. 2 (February 2015): 129–40. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/cgj-2014-0051.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional mapping and monitoring of active slope processes in mountainous terrain is challenging, given often difficult site accessibility, obstructed visibility, and high complexity of the terrain. For example, the rockfall hazard evaluation system employed by Canadian railways relies partly on visibility of the rockfall source zone from track level, which is often impossible for large or complex slopes, in the mountains and elsewhere. Recent advancements in remote sensing, data collection, and analysis algorithms have helped resolve some of these issues by allowing the slope processes to be mapped, and thereby understood, with a greater degree of accuracy and confidence than was previously possible. For example, a better understanding of the rate of movement of material around a natural rock slope affecting a transportation corridor would certainly improve any assessment of the hazards caused by those movements. Various remote sensing technologies have the capability to be used to assess these processes; however, the optimal conditions under which the technology should be deployed are not clearly defined. Between December 2012 and December 2013 the efficacy of three remote sensing technologies (terrestrial and aerial LiDAR (light detection and ranging) and terrestrial photogrammetry) were compared for their ability to detect natural and anthropogenic changes at a location along the CN railway, in British Columbia, Canada. The results demonstrate a high degree of interoperability between the different technologies, the ability to map topographical change with all three technologies, and the limitations and (or) weaknesses of each technology with respect to mapping change. The project location and site accessibility represent a real world situation with nonideal facets, which challenge the capabilities of these state-of-the-art technologies. These results will aid decision-making with respect to implementation of remote sensing technologies to monitor changes to rock slopes adjacent to transportation corridors, which will lead to better understanding and assessment of hazards.

Abstract:
Islam as a doctrine has a unique relationship with culture. The uniqueness was emerging when Islam as a doctrine has to confront a tradition living in a community. This study discusses how the sculptors in Prumpung Magelang negotiate and compromise betwen the two of opposite entities in the comunity, that is (1) religious doctrines (sourced from authoritative texts) about the prohibition of crafting the image of living being, and (2) cultural and artistic practices of making living being as perfect objects of artistic passion. This research attempts to explore and understand the creative reasoning model of some sculptors in the area of Prumpung Magelang when they have to appreciate their artistic passion in sculpture without having to confront the meaning of authoritative texts. Through a reception theory approach, this research concluded that the compromise and negoitation of two opposite entities which often creates polemics in the community can be accommodated in a work of art with objects of living things but still within the corridors and boundaries allowed by the text authority (hadith).

Abstract:
The dramatic growth in trade between the United States and Mexico from $12.39 billion to $56.8 billion of U.S. exports and $17.56 billion to $73 billion of U.S. imports between 1977 and 1996 and the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) have focused attention on the impact that the truck-transported portion of this trade has on U.S. highways. State and federal highway administrators are concerned with the planning implications this additional unexpected traffic may have on the transportation infrastructure. Public advocacy groups want additional highway funds to promote one NAFTA highway corridor over others in an effort to stimulate additional economic development. Most of these groups advocate a north-south route through the United States between Canada and Mexico that follows the alignment of an existing federal highway number. Research conducted by the U.S. government under the 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act has failed to define NAFTA highway corridors adequately, leaving policy makers with little concrete information with which to combat the rhetoric of the trade highway corridor advocacy groups. A report is provided on research critical to the needs of both highway administrators and corridor advocacy groups, namely, the location of U.S.-Mexican trade highway corridors and the trade truck density along these corridors.

Abstract:
Biological communities in Mexico experienced profound changes in species composition and structure as a consequence of the environmental fluctuations during the Pleistocene. Based on the recent and fossil Mexican mammal checklists, we determine the distribution, composition, diversity, and community structure of late Pleistocene mammalian faunas, and analyze extinction patterns and response of individual species to environmental changes. We conclude that (1) differential extinctions occurred at family, genus, and species level, with a major impact on species heavier than 100 kg, including the extinction all proboscideans and several ruminants; (2) Pleistocene mammal communities in Mexico were more diverse than recent ones; and (3) the current assemblages of species are relatively young. Furthermore, Pleistocene relicts support the presence of biogeographic corridors; important refugia existed as well as centers of speciation in isolated regions. We identified seven corridors: eastern USA–Sierra Madre Oriental corridor, Rocky Mountains–Sierra Madre Occidental corridor, Central United States–Northern Mexico corridor, Transvolcanic Belt–Sierra Madre del Sur corridor, western USA–Baja California corridor, Tamaulipas–Central America gulf lowlands corridor, and Sonora–Central America Pacific lowlands corridor. Our study suggests that present mammalian assemblages are very different than the ones in the late Pleistocene.

Abstract:
Constructing the ecological security pattern is imperative to stabilize ecosystem services and sustainable development coordination of the social economy and ecology. This paper focuses on the Karst region in southeastern Yunnan, which is ecologically fragile. This paper selects the main types of ecosystem services and identifies the ecological source using hot spot analysis for Guangnan County. An inclusive consideration of the regional ecologic conditions and the rocky desertification formation mechanism was made. The resistance factor index system was developed to generate the basic resistance surface modified by the ecological sensitivity index. The Ant algorithm and Kernel density analysis were used to determine ecological corridor range and ecological restoration points that constructed the ecological security pattern of Guangnan County. The results demonstrated that, firstly, there were twenty-three sources in Guangnan County, with a total area of 1292.77 km2, accounting for 16.74% of the total. The forests were the chief ecological sources distributed in the non-Karst area, where Bamei Town, Yangliujing Township and Nasa Town had the highest distribution. Secondly, the revised resistance value is similar to “Zhe (Zhetu Township)-Lian (Liancheng Town)-Yang (Yangliujing Township)-Ban (Bambang Township)”. The values were lower in the north and higher in the south, which is consistent with the regional distribution of Karst. Thirdly, the constructed ecological security pattern of the “Source-Corridor-Ecological restoration point” paradigm had twenty-three ecological corridors. The chief ecological and potential corridor areas were 804.95 km2 and 621.2 km2, respectively. There are thirty-eight ecological restoration points mainly distributed in the principal ecological corridors and play a vital role in maintaining the corridor connectivity between sources. The results provide guidance and theoretical basis for the ecological security patterns construction in Karst areas, regional ecologic security protection and sustainable development promotion.

Abstract:
Bali Province in Indonesia is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. The number of tourists visiting this province keeps increasing year by year parallel with the increase of the population of local citizens. Such a phenomenon will certainly increase travel demand and put pressure on the current transport infrastructure. Hence, transport infrastructure development is essential to support the travel demand. This study explores the possibility of implementing a new public transport system in the South Bali District, a district with numerous tourist attractions and activity centres. Data collection on the current transport system and land use in the district were carried out to understand potential corridors for public transport. A stated preference survey was also conducted to discover the public transport mode preferred by the respondents, encompassing tourists and local citizens. This study then recommends the type of public transport mode to be implemented in the district based on i) space availability, ii) respondent preference, and iii) ability to accommodate demand based on calculation. The study concludes that Automated Rapid Transit (ART) is a mode that has the highest potential to be implemented in South Bali Districts.

Abstract:
Ecological and anthropogenic corridors are becoming more common worldwide, but little is known about how corridor size (width) affects species' movements, and thus their effects. Here we investigated whether 4- and 8-m wide anthropogenic corridors (seismic lines) cleared for petroleum (oil sands) exploration in boreal forests in Alberta, Canada, act on altering the behaviour of a habitat generalist butterfly, the Arctic fritillary ( Boloria chariclea ). Specifically, we captured 539 Arctic fritillaries and released them in seismic line corridor or control sites with no structural directionality (i.e. forests and clearings), and recorded both their initial direction (along the seismic line or not) and persistence in directional movements. Arctic fritillaries moved inside these lines twice as often as they left them, and maintained their initial direction more often, regardless of line size and independently of forest structure or sex of individuals. Thus, anthropogenic corridors as narrow as 4 m can affect insect movements. Given the vast area of boreal forests disturbed from seismic assessments, investigating if the effects of these dense, localized lines affect population dynamics and species interactions would provide important insights to managing this ecosystem and identifying restoration actions.

Abstract:
The tasks of guard placement or sensor deployment in an art gallery, a museum or in the corridors of public and security buildings pose the same problem, which requires placing the guards or sensors so as to cover a specified set of nodes with a minimum number of sensors or guards, thereby reducing the overall cost of the system as well assist power consumption. Generally, minimization can be done using optimization techniques such as linear programming, but in case of sensor deployment or guard placement there is a need either to place or not to place the sensor or guard, and hence only Boolean or binary values are used. Therefore, in order to optimize such a problem, we use the special case of linear integer programming known as Boolean integer linear programming (0-1 ILP). Other algorithms like Pseudo-Boolean SAT Solvers can also be used for the minimization purpose. In this paper, we introduce these minimization algorithms for the sensor deployment problem. We also contribute a greed-based heuristic, which utilizes the fact that the pertinent propositional formulas have variables of purely un-complemented literals. This heuristic has much less computational cost compared to those of 0-1 ILP and the Pseudo-Boolean SAT Solvers.

Abstract:
The APA is concerned about its declining membership. Only 16 700 psychiatrists were able to attend this year's meeting in New York and many of them came mainly to consult the job bureau in search of employment. For the first time unemployment is a real issue for psychiatrists as health care providers restrict services and seek alternative and cheaper patterns of care. Most health care organisations have lists of approved psychiatrists and anyone not on that list is not able to claim reimbursement for their services. Exclusion may be because of unreported and unchallenged complaints about care or conduct or a penchant for expensive drugs or high risk therapies. In this context a high risk therapy is one which exposes the insurers to a high risk of litigation, such as ‘recovered memory therapy’. The buzz in the corridors, which used to be of art collections, the new home by the lake or the costs of putting the kids through college, is now of managed care. These dread words reduce the most ebullient colleagues to anger or tears. Some time ago I reported in amazement the discussions at an earlier meeting on alien abduction, ritual abuse, multiple personality disorder (110 different individuals in one body was then the record) and the false memory syndrome.

Abstract:
Pedestrian tracking systems implemented in regular smartphones may provide a convenient mechanism for wayfinding and backtracking for people who are blind. However, virtually all existing studies only considered sighted participants, whose gait pattern may be different from that of blind walkers using a long cane or a dog guide. In this contribution, we present a comparative assessment of several algorithms using inertial sensors for pedestrian tracking, as applied to data from WeAllWalk, the only published inertial sensor dataset collected indoors from blind walkers. We consider two situations of interest. In the first situation, a map of the building is not available, in which case we assume that users walk in a network of corridors intersecting at 45° or 90°. We propose a new two-stage turn detector that, combined with an LSTM-based step counter, can robustly reconstruct the path traversed. We compare this with RoNIN, a state-of-the-art algorithm based on deep learning. In the second situation, a map is available, which provides a strong prior on the possible trajectories. For these situations, we experiment with particle filtering, with an additional clustering stage based on mean shift. Our results highlight the importance of training and testing inertial odometry systems for assisted navigation with data from blind walkers.

Abstract:
The autonomous navigation of unmanned vehicles in GPS denied environments is an incredibly challenging task. Because cameras are low in price, obtain rich information, and passively sense the environment, vision based simultaneous localization and mapping (VSLAM) has great potential to solve this problem. In this paper, we propose a novel VSLAM framework based on a stereo camera. The proposed approach combines the direct and indirect method for the real-time localization of an autonomous forklift in a non-structured warehouse. Our proposed hybrid method uses photometric errors to perform image alignment for data association and pose estimation, extracts features from keyframes, and matches them to acquire the updated pose. By combining the efficiency of the direct method and the high accuracy of the indirect method, the approach achieves higher speed with comparable accuracy to a state-of-the-art method. Furthermore, the two step dynamic threshold feature extraction method significantly reduces the operating time. In addition, a motion model of the forklift is proposed to provide a more reasonable initial pose for direct image alignment based on photometric errors. The proposed algorithm is experimentally tested on a dataset constructed from a large scale warehouse with dynamic lighting and long corridors, and the results show that it can still successfully perform with high accuracy. Additionally, our method can operate in real time using limited computing resources.

Abstract:
The Transborder Immigrant Tool is a Border Disturbance Art Performance that discusses the physical and virtual limits of the U.S.–Mexico frontier. It was developed by the Electronic Disturbance Theater (EDT) with the funding of the Arts and Humanities Grant 2007–2008 at the University of California in San Diego. The project uses an inexpensive GPS-enabled cell phone and a custom piece of software, the Virtual Hiker Algorithm, to guide border crossers in the desert. The crossing of the U.S.–Mexico border can be deadly due to the severe conditions of the environment; once in the Mexican desert, the software installed in the cell phone directs the immigrant toward the nearest aid site, be that water, first aid or law enforcement, along with other contextual navigational information. According to the EDT, the Transborder Immigrant Tool was created with the aim of reappropriating widely available technology to be used as a form of humanitarian aid, as well as offering a tactical intervention of distraction and disturbance in the order of transnational corridors. In addition to the navigational capabilities of the Tool, the performative effect is also provided through poetry made available on the screen of the cell phone. It is with this poetry that the artists attempt to rescue a sense of hospitality and to alleviate the difficulties of the journey.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article reports on the results of the 2008 and 2009 field seasons to survey and record rock engravings in the Wadi al-Hayat. The project started in 2004 with the intention of systematically surveying a 160 km long section of the wadi, centred on the Garamantian settlement at Jarma. This was completed in 2009 in collaboration with the Desert Migrations project. Over 600 previously unrecorded engraved panels were identified in 2008–9. These appear to range in date from the early Pastoral period to the post-Garamantian period. Clear links have been noted in previous seasons in the distribution of the engravings with respect to specific topographic and cultural features. The 2008–9 survey showed that rock carvings also mark patterns of movement through the wadi, and that these patterns appear to shift over time between the Pastoral and post-Garmantian periods. Some of the areas investigated provide relatively easy access into the Wadi al-Hayat from the south and may have represented important corridors for the migration of people and animals for thousands of years. In tandem with the systematic survey, a targeted survey of selected Late Pastoral and Garamantian cemetery and settlement sites was undertaken during the 2008 season. No positive relationship was found between rock engravings and Garamantian burial or settlement sites. However, a definite association was demonstrated between rock art and Late Pastoral burials and temporary camp sites.

Abstract:
ICOMOS emphasised in the 2008 Québec Declaration that the ‘Spirit of Place,’ possessed by monuments and sites, must be preserved, the idea spread and promoted, and that digital technology should be extensively utilised. Xuejia Tzu-chi Temple in Taiwan, an ancestral temple that inherited the traditional belief of Bao Sheng Da Di ([Formula: see text], God of medicine) from Baijiao ([Formula: see text]), holds much religious significance and is crucial to the residents' spiritual sustenance and community. Among those objects preserved in this temple are the intricate Ye Wang's Koji potteries as well as various other precious cultural relics, making the palace an important research base for Taiwan's traditional arts. As such, religion, society, art and other elements coalesce to form the unique spirit of place of the Tzu-chi Temple. This study, under the principle of continuity in space, focuses on the temple square, corridors spanning different areas, the pantheon, and uses ‘image-based interactive panoramic imaging technology’ to capture a total of 45 spatial scenes, recording the overall spatial construct and the paths within which the space could move, completing the spirit of space of the object, and recording the track of space. Then setting this as the basis for establishing a recording of various activities of the humanities and for preserving the spirit of place of the Xuejia Tzu-chi Temple for future generations, we hope that the results of this study will provide various relevant types of digital recording for research on spatial construct in monuments.

Abstract:
Abstract This video demonstrates the workflow of a minimally invasive transforaminal interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) using a portable intraoperative CT (iCT) scanner, (Airo®, Brainlab AG, Feldkirchen, Germany), combined with state-of-the-art total 3D computer navigation. The navigation is used not only for instrumentation but also for intraoperative planning throughout the procedure, inserting the cage, therefore, completely eliminating the need for fluoroscopy. In this video, we present a case of a 72-yr-old female patient with a history of lower back pain, right lower extremity radicular pain and weakness for 2 yr due to L4-L5 spondylolisthesis with instability and severe lumbar spinal stenosis. The patient is treated by a L4-L5 unilateral laminotomy for bilateral decompression (ULBD) and MIS-TLIF. MIS-TLIF using total 3D navigation significantly improves the workflow of the conventional TLIF procedure. The tailored access to the spine is translated into smaller but more efficient surgical corridors. This modification in a “total navigation” modality minimizes the staff radiation exposure to 0 by navigating in real time over iCT obtained images that can be acquired while the surgical staff is protected or outside the OR. Furthermore, this technique makes real-time and virtual intraoperative imaging of screws and their planned trajectory feasible. 3D Navigation eliminates the need for K-Wires, thus decreasing the risk of vascular penetration injury due to K-Wire malpositioning. 3D navigation can also predict the positioning of the interbody cage, thereby, decreasing the risk of malpositioning or subsidence. Patient consent was obtained prior to performing the procedure.

Abstract:
The introduction of automated L5 driving technologies will revolutionise the design of vehicle interiors and seating configurations, improving occupant comfort and experience. It is foreseen that pre-crash emergency braking and swerving manoeuvres will affect occupant posture, which could lead to an interaction with a deploying airbag. This research addresses the urgent safety need of defining the occupant’s kinematics envelope during that pre-crash phase, considering rotated seat arrangements and different seatbelt configurations. The research used two different sets of volunteer tests experiencing L5 vehicle manoeuvres, based in the first instance on 22 50th percentile fit males wearing a lap-belt (OM4IS), while the other dataset is based on 87 volunteers with a BMI range of 19 to 67 kg/m2 wearing a 3-point belt (UMTRI). Unique biomechanics kinematics corridors were then defined, as a function of belt configuration and vehicle manoeuvre, to calibrate an Active Human Model (AHM) using a multi-objective optimisation coupled with a Correlation and Analysis (CORA) rating. The research improved the AHM omnidirectional kinematics response over current state of the art in a generic lap-belted environment. The AHM was then tested in a rotated seating arrangement under extreme braking, highlighting that maximum lateral and frontal motions are comparable, independent of the belt system, while the asymmetry of the 3-point belt increased the occupant’s motion towards the seatbelt buckle. It was observed that the frontal occupant kinematics decrease by 200 mm compared to a lap-belted configuration. This improved omnidirectional AHM is the first step towards designing safer future L5 vehicle interiors.

Abstract:
Graffiti have received a great attention from scholars as they have been considered a vital cultural phenomenon for many years (Trahan, 2011; Divsalar & Nemati, 2012; Zakareviciute, 2014; Farnia, 2014; El-Nashar & Nayef; 2016). Although there are extensive contemporary researches on graffiti in many disciplines, such as linguistics, cultural studies, politics, art, and communication (Pietrosanti, 2010; Farnia, 2014; Oganda, 2015), there are few studies exploring graffiti on classrooms’ walls in higher education milieus (Farnia, 2014). To the best knowledge of the researchers, very few studies were done on the Jordanian context (e.g. Al-Haj Eid, 2008; Abu-Jaber, et al., 2012) and none was done on the Jordanian universities. Therefore, this study aims at analysing the content and communicative features of writings found on universities’ classrooms’ walls, corridors, and washrooms and their relation to the socio-cultural values of the society in order to explore how universities help students voice their attitudes and thoughts. The linguistic features that characterise these writings were also examined. Graffiti-writings, which were collected from the University of Jordan and the Hashemite University, were coded and analysed using the thematic content analysis technique (Braun & Clarke, 2006) and Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 1995). The analysis of the data has shown that graffiti serve different communicative language functions related to personal, social, national, religious, political, and taboo matters. The most salient linguistic features of these graffiti are simplicity and variation. It can be concluded that graffiti are distinctive and silent ways of communication, particularly in students’ society. The study will be of great importance to linguists, sociologists, educators, administrators, teachers and parents. It is enrichment to the available literature on linguistic studies.

Abstract:
This special issue of the journal Asian Studies is dedicated to the meaning and transformation of Chinese funerary art during the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) and the subsequent Wei Jin Nanbei period (220–581 CE). The “horizontal-pit grave,” which first appeared in the middle Western Han period, marked a departure from the hitherto prevailing design based on a vertical shaft. This new form permitted the development of several burial chambers with distinct functions––a layout that would culminate in large-scale tombs with multiple chambers arranged along a central axis and flanked by side rooms and corridors. Another feature that distinguishes Han tombs from those of earlier periods is the use of brick and stone. The new horizontal-pit graves constructed from these materials provided an ideal substrate for a variety of decorations (stamped, carved or painted). These embellishments, which began to appear together with the new construction technique in the middle Western Han period, achieved their greatest diffusion during the Eastern Han period (25–220 CE). With the rapid outward expansion of the powerful Han state, accompanied as it was by the transfer of government officials and military commanders from the centre to the borderlands, the culture of the Han people, including their burial practices and tomb designs, spread to the frontier regions. As a result of the political and social disorder that characterized the latter years of the Eastern Han period, and which was accelerated by the dynasty’s downfall, the Central Plain was thrust into a state of war and turmoil, provoking even greater migration to the remote border areas in the northwest and northeast, as well as to the southern areas.

Abstract:
Bagurau Lapiak is one of the types of saluang dendang (sing along with saluang—a type of recorder—play) performance conducted in the corridors of Payakumbuh stores, using lapiak (mat) for seat. Bagurau Lapiak is organized by a group ‘pagurauan’ (jokers) held on evenings starting at 21.00 until dawn. The singer (‘pendendang’) in the show is a woman who will fulfill the request of the audience to sing and play certain tunes by giving some amount of money to a committee called janang. Previously all singers in Minangkabau are men; women singers are considered to violate traitional and religious norms and it is not appropriate for women to sing along with the men in public let alone at night. However, in the case of saluang pendendang, women sungers play an important role in attracting the ‘joke addict’ in saluang bagurau (joking) activity. This paper aims to reveal the form of presentation of bagurau lapiak in Payakumbuh and the society's view of women as singer. This stuy used qualitative descriptive analysis method with cultural anthropology approach to music which can be seen through the behavior of musical physic and verbal as cultural facts of individuals and community groups. The music and the communities’ behavior have a very close relation. This study also uses feminimisme theory to explain women’s role in the saluang dendang show. The result shows that the tunes, the rhymed text that are sung by women are a kind of communication between the singers and the audience. In the other hand, people support as well as criticize the woman singer based on traditional, religious, and performing art values. Keywords: pendendang women, Bagurau Lapiak, community views

I will consider the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in Niigata, Japan as an “agentic assemblage” (Jane Bennett) that moves beyond the conception of “land” or “site” as an inert stage for human artistic intentions. The festival functions as the distributed agency of an assemblage including rice fields, river corridors, rural villages and villagers, landslides, heavy snowfall and art objects. This view suggests a fractal causality in which art is conceived within a network of human and nonhuman activity. As artistic practice, the Triennale makes visible webs of relationships that move beyond notions of site specificity or socio-ecological restoration. From a New Materialist perspective, the festival’s interaction within a mosaic satoyama landscape becomes a visible representation of an evolution of art away from exclusively anthropocentric intentionality. This view suggests deeper readings of the festival’s practice, particular artworks, and of the emphasis on performative food production and consumption – the mutual transformation of material bodies. This article is in Japanese.

Abstract:
The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 required the U.S. Department of Transportation to evaluate the commercial feasibility of high-speed ground transportation—a family of technologies ranging from incremental rail improvements to high-speed rail and magnetic levitation (Maglev) systems—in selected urban corridors. The evaluation involved estimating travel times, capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, and ridership for proposed service frequencies and then computing the potential return on investment from fares and other potential revenues. The results are documented in a U.S. Department of Transportation report generally referred to as the commercial feasibility study (CFS). Two elements of the CFS are addressed here: travel times and capital costs in four illustrative corridors—Chicago to St. Louis; Los Angeles to San Francisco; Eugene, Oreg., to Vancouver, B.C.; and Miami to Tampa via Orlando. Analysis of the results reveals common cost trends: for average speeds up to about 200 km/hr (125 mph), the initial investment required is generally in the range $1.6 to $3 million per route-kilometer ($2.6 to 4.8 million per route-mile). Above this speed regime (which varies by corridor), the initial investment increases steadily with speed, generally reaching $10 to $12 million per route-km ($16 to $19 million per route-mi) for very-high-speed rail systems and from $14 to $19 million per route-km ($23 to $31 million per route-mi) for Maglev systems. Analysis of the capital cost estimates reveals that despite the wide range of initial costs for the high-speed options, the cost per minute of trip time saved is remarkably consistent in corridors of similar length and with similar terrains. Cost-effectiveness plots are provided, allowing the reader to compare the performance of each of the four corridors in terms of trip time savings and cost per route-kilometer.

Abstract Forests have an important role during migration. They act as ecological corridors and provide resting and feeding places for birds. In our study, we sought to determine whether migratory birds prefer secondary forest or canal vegetation during migration. The study was carried out in Southeast Hungary, in an oleaster forest and in a canal. We used 12 mist nets and the ringing method. The study period lasted from August to October 2016–2018, covering approximately the entire migration period. According to our results, the canal has a significant effect on the species assemblage, as it functions as a migration corridor during migration, most likely not only for diurnal migrants, but for nocturnal migrants as well. Our results showed that the presence of both woody and berry plants had some influence on the species composition. Interestingly, the presence of berries had a positive effect on the presence of insectivorous birds.

Abstract:

Abstract:
With rising urban freeway congestion and limited funds available for highway expansion, it may be essential to manage traffic growth by using high-occupancy toll lanes and other travel demand management (TDM) measures. To prepare for and help guide freeway corridor management planning in the US-101 and I-280 corridors in San Francisco, California, information describing trip origins and destinations by time of day was desired. Observed roadway facility-specific origin–destination (O-D) flows can help researchers to understand spatial distribution of demand and impute willingness to pay, actions that are useful in evaluating various TDM strategies. This paper describes a new passively collected O-D data source—Google’s aggregated and anonymized trip (AAT) data—obtained under Google’s Better Cities program. Aggregate hourly flow matrices for 85 districts covering California’s nine-county Bay Area specific to four freeway segments in San Francisco were obtained. Because AAT data account for only a sample of travelers, Google provides relative flows rather than absolute counts. Linear regression models were estimated to relate relative flows in the AAT data set and observed traffic volumes from the California Department of Transportation’s Performance Measurement System. The models were applied to convert relative flows to trips and derive facility-specific, time-dependent O-D matrices. Comparison of these facility-specific O-D matrices to select link O-D matrices from a regional travel demand model show that there is a higher correlation in terms of productions at origin districts and attractions at destination districts than at the O-D flow level. Some opportunities and limitations of the new data source are discussed, along with recommendations for future research.

Abstract:
Abstract Remnant riparian woodlands have an important landscape function, due to their ability to act as ecological corridors. In this study we used molecular markers to assess the genetic variation occurring within and between spontaneous white willow (Salix alba L.) riparian woodlands. Our main goal was to evaluate the extent to which the fragmentation of a woodland corridor along a heavily impacted river in northeastern Italy and stand structural conditions may have affected the population genetics. Although having different structures, the three examined white willow stands showed high estimates of genetic similarity, as well as low genetic differentiation between them, indicating that they shared a similar gene pool and that the stands could result from a common set of individual genotypes, and should be regarded as metapopulations. The magnitude of genetic diversity within each of the stands and genetic differentiation between them, despite their high sexual reproductive capacity associated with a highly marked gene flow, suggest that these stands are dynamic and capable of adaptive responses to possible changes in their fluvial environment. However, the factors influencing genetic diversity should be interpreted from a long-term perspective. Fluvial geomorphic patterns in regulated rivers may be modified to a degree that could lead to changes in dispersal processes, sexual reproduction vs. asexual propagation, and hence genetic diversity.

Abstract:
Art therapy has attracted attention in the medical field. Among them, authors have been engaged in various activities including art in hospitals. We have started the artworks using masking tape, which has various colors and the pattern. It can be also used for craft making, wrapping, decoration, and original goods such as art exhibitions. Our current work was performed on the corridor and staircase walls of Tokushima University hospital. It has psychologically three important perspectives, which are i) healing: relieving anxiety, healing the mind, ii) comfort: creating a pleasant and comfortable image, iii) wayfinding system: the wall sign can give a walk direction guide without confusion such as pilgrim walking. We plan to develop the performance in various opportunities.

Abstract:
This project considers the operational impact of Autonomous Vehicles by creating a corridor using the latest network available. The behaviour of these vehicles entering the corridor is monitored at the macroscopic level by modifying the data which can be extracted from the vehicle. This data is made to learn using machine learning called the Time Series Neural Network and the data is used as a parameter to make the vehicles Autonomous. The project resolves the location, develops and demonstrates the collision avoidance of the vehicles using Artificial Intelligence. Autonomous means the vehicles will be able to learn to act accordingly without human intervention
