Abstract:
Abstract The Corsi block-tapping test was developed as a non-verbal task to measure spatial memory. In this test, cubes are tapped by the examiner in novel sequences of increasing length after which participants are required to reproduce each sequence immediately. Objectives: To evaluate spatial working memory in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Methods: 30 elderly control subjects (21 women, 9 men) and 30 patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (15 women and 15 men), with 8 or more years of schooling, were evaluated with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), digit span and Corsi bloc

Working memory (WM) refers to ability to store and manipulate information for a period of time. There is evidence of a close relationship between WM and learning. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between WM, intelligence quotient (IQ) on school achievement. Individual neuropsychological assessment was conducted following a specific protocol. The study included 227 children aged 7 to 12 years (M = 9.87, SD = 1.34), of which 119 were females, from private and public schools in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The data analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics. Aca

Abstract The identification of talent in soccer is critical to various programs. Although many research findings have been presented, there have been only a few attempts to assess their validity. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between talent and achievement variables in the Vienna Test System. The participants were 91 Czech soccer players, representing four youth soccer teams, who were born in the year 2000. These boys were divided into two groups according to their coaches’ assessments using a TALENT questionnaire. A two-factor model (component 1: “kinetic finesse”; c

Decline in visuo-spatial skills and memory failures are considered symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and they can be assessed at early stages employing clinical tests. However, performance in a single test is generally not indicative of AD. Functional neuroimaging, such as functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), may be employed during these tests in an ecological setting to support diagnosis. Indeed, neuroimaging should not alter clinical practice allowing free doctor-patient interaction. However, block-designed paradigms, necessary for standard functional neuroimaging analysis, requ

Age-related inhibitory effects were investigated during spatial memory performance. In Experiment 1, 15 young (M = 20 years) and 16 old adults (M = 70 years) completed two spatial tasks (i.e., Block Suppression Test, Corsi Block Tapping Test) that differed in need for inhibitory processing. Accuracy differences within each task revealed age-related differences in spatial working memory and between task differences revealed that older adults had difficulty ignoring irrelevant items. Experiment 2 (10 young, 10 old adults) examined whether the distractibility of irrelevant items in the inhibition

Abstract:
A large number of studies in psychology and cognitive neuroscience suggest that the left and right cerebral hemispheres have differences in specialization of processing. The left hemisphere tends to be specialized for complex capacities such as language and numbers, whereas the right hemisphere typically shows advantages for visuospatial attention and recognition of nonverbal form. The present study was designed to investigate whether these functional cerebral asymmetries would extend to working memory tasks. It was hypothesized that the left hemisphere would have more advantage for accurate r
