Abstract:
The demand for halal cosmetic products among the 2.4 billion Muslim consumers worldwide is increasing. However, the demand for halal cosmetics remains unmet because cosmetics production is dominated by non-halal cosmetic manufacturers, whose production methods may not conform with the requirements of halal science. The development of halal cosmetics and the assessment of their product performance is still in its infancy. The integration of halal science in the manufacture of most cosmetic products remains inadequate. Moreover, there is a global dearth of guiding documents on the development and assessment techniques in the production of comprehensively halal cosmetics. This paper aims to abridge existing literature and knowledge of halal and cosmetic science in order to provide essential technical guidance in the manufacture of halal cosmetics. In addition, the adoption of these methods addresses the unique ethical issues associated with conformance of cosmetics’ product performance to religious practices and halal science. It highlights the applicability of established methods in skin science in the assessment of halal cosmetics.

Fejdiova, Elena. "Female cosmetic coalitions : how to be women together through direct sales cosmetics." Thesis, University of East London, 2018. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/7537/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is based on ethnographic fieldwork amongst women purchasing direct sales cosmetics in Slovakia. To interpret the data I use concepts from social as well as evolutionary anthropology. In the thesis I examine the closely bonded female collectives that emerged during the purchasing of cosmetics from direct sales companies. I show that while the company sales representatives were trained in the network selling marketing to make a profit, under specified conditions women’s collectives emerged that encouraged the shared ritualized purchase of cosmetics which undermined the sales representatives’ incentives to make a gain. I identify and explain the mechanisms that intensified the relationships amongst the women who created collectives of allies. In this ritually forged environment the women created small collectives based on mutual trust, sharing, egalitarianism and cooperation that extended beyond the context of attractiveness enhancement. In the ritual mode women generated a resistance culture that opposed the individualistic and competitive practices of the cosmetic companies and favoured the leveling of beautification through ritual egalitarianism. From the energetically costly ritual performance ambivalent ritual gender emerged that incorporated both female and male characteristics and was controlled by the female collectives. Endowed with ritual power women employed their ritually created collective agency by claiming their ritual space and time. In the process of ritualization the women transformed economic relations into gift-like relationships that through a web of social obligations created bonds of solidarity and cooperation amongst them. As a result of the collective ritual practice cosmetics became a signal of commitment to the cosmetic coalition. They were invested with the meanings of morality, cooperation and equality of quasi kinship ties. Through regular participation in the collective cosmetic rituals women learnt a ritual template that enabled them to enter any such female collective across Slovakia. These collectives provided their female members with benefits beyond the ritual context. The thesis contributes to the body of work on female competition and cooperation. It shows that once women are united through collective rituals with cosmetics and beautification at their centre they create a safe environment where cooperation rather than competition through beauty prevails. Through recognizing and interpreting the mechanisms for bonding and group commitment the thesis also develops the model of female cosmetic coalitions within the setting of direct sales cosmetics in Slovakia.

This thesis collects the published material evidence surrounding the personal use of cosmetics and perfumes in Pompeii, and contains a typology of Roman unguentaria. The findings and analysis will be fundamentally archaeological, but will be supported by the ancient literary and secondary published works on archaeometry, especially chromatography. The main theory behind this research is that cosmetics may indicate certain room functions by gender and class, and could provide insight into the gendered use of space within Roman households.

Di, Stefano Alessia <1997&gt. "The Chinese cosmetics industry and legal requirements on cosmetics: is China going to align with European regulations?" Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/19890.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last decades, the Chinese cosmetics market has experienced an unprecedented growth, so that nowadays it is the second largest cosmetics market in the world. Increased consumption of cosmetics and sophistication of consumers’ demand made China the most sought-after market for many Western companies that started to import their products and establish production subsidiaries in China, taking advantage of an initial lack of regulations and controls on the market. As a result, foreign enterprises, especially European and American ones, easily ended up conquering major market shares thanks to their strong brand image and reputation. However, in the last few years, China has been strengthening its regulation and legal requirements on cosmetics in order to control imported products and ensure safety and quality of cosmetics. Increased requirements on cosmetics and complex procedures for importation and registration of cosmetics let foreign cosmetic companies experience major difficulties and they became actual barriers to entry for many small and medium enterprises that intended to enter the Chinese market. Recent developments in Chinese regulations and legal requirements on cosmetics showed a greater attention from the Chinese part toward safety and quality assessment and a tendency to align its requirements to international ones, especially to the European ones. But what are the real reasons behind these recent developments? Is China going to completely align its regulation to the European one? This is the background on which this thesis was elaborated. Its aim is investigating the current state of regulations and procedures for importation of foreign cosmetics on the Chinese market and trying to answer the above-mentioned questions. The first part of this thesis introduces a general framework about the state of cosmetics at international level, followed by a general overview on the Chinese cosmetics market based on the analysis of its state of development and its general major characteristics. The central part is devoted to recent developments and the current state of regulations and legal requirements on cosmetics in China, which represent important trade barriers for foreign companies, and it ends up with a comparison between Chinese and European regulations that shows how differences have an impact on foreign cosmetic companies that operate on the Chinese market. Finally, the last part attempts to draw conclusions, answer the questions raised throughout the thesis and give a personal interpretation of the implied intentions of China. Is it really going to align to European requirements? Is it trying to catch up with international regulations and standards to foster international trade? Or does it just want to protect its domestic market from the “foreign invasion” while hiding behind the goodwill to align its regulation and legal requirements with the European ones?

Abstract:
In 2020, Europe reached 76.7 billion people. EUR of cosmetics sales in the retail market and according to this indicator is the largest market for cosmetic products in the world. 500 million European consumers use cosmetics and personal care products every day to protect their health and improve their well-being. With the high demand for cosmetic products, companies must ensure that products are produced at the right time and in the right quantities. However, in cosmetic manufacturing processes, inevitable losses occur in the supply chain and various losses in production that slow the shipments of cosmetic products. Continuous improvement of production processes, cost reduction measures, and quality assurance are necessary measures to obtain maximum profit and remain competitive. The object of the study is to improve production processes in the cosmetics sector. The purpose of the article is to identify the main problems of production processes in the cosmetics sector and to create a model for improving production processes. To achieve the goal, the following tasks are set: perform an analysis of scientific literature related to the improvement of the production process of the cosmetics sector; to choose appropriate research methods that will help identify the problems of improving production processes in the cosmetics sector; to present a model for improving cosmetic product manufacturing processes in cosmetic manufacturing companies. Research methods: analysis of scientific literature, observation method, expert assessment.

Abstract:
Cosmetic area has increased worldwide and will continue to expand as long as there are users. At the moment, the interest leads towards cosmetics based on natural ingredients. A common aesthetic problem for majority of the people is represented by dark circles which appear in the infraorbital region. The purpose of this work was to prepare and analyze new cosmetics based on collagen and caffeine with antimicrobial activity that can be used for the treatment of dark circles. The obtained cosmetics are stable at the natural pH of the skin, indicating that new products can be securely used. Images from the optical microscopy evaluation revealed that cosmetics have a soft and foam like appearance. All the obtained cosmetics present excellent stability at 4 and 40°C. The antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was also performed showing that the cream with collagen hydrolysate and smallest amount of caffeine is the most efficient Some more analysis need to be performed before notification.

Abstract:
The cosmetic industry is not a recent phenomenon, but a long-standing practice dating back hundreds of years. Both women and men used cosmetics not only to enhance physical appearance, but also to convey social and cultural meanings. Many of the products used were based on copper minerals, copper oxide, charcoal obtained by burning almonds, ash, powders and other chemical elements such as arsenic, characterized by a particular toxicity. Due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-pigmentation and antibacterial properties, minerals are frequently integrated into cosmetic product formulations. They play a crucial role in addressing and treating various dermatological conditions, providing therapeutic benefits and helping to improve the health of the skin and other aspects of the body. The daily intake of minerals is necessary for the harmonious and continuous basic functioning of the human body. These minerals are divided into two important categories: macroelements (calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium etc) and trace elements (iron, copper, selenium, cobalt, zinc etc). In the following paper, I have highlighted the benefits brought by Zinc and its compounds to the Cosmetic Industry. The trace element is frequently used in the composition of cosmetics, as well as in the treatment of dermatological conditions.

Abstract:
Considering the rising importance of emotions in influencing the purchase decisions of consumers, this research highlights emotions and the ways in which they impact the purchase behaviour. This is significant regarding information the marketers use to develop the strategies and practices for targeting consumer emotions, which ineffectively influence their purchase decisions for luxury cosmetics products. Indeed, this a challenge that marketers have faced in correctly aligning their marketing mix strategies to connect with these consumer groups. Conventional marketing strategies used to capture emotion as a factor to determine consumer choices have historically enable commercial success for luxury brands, however, this research explores emotions and moods using the Mood Congruency Model and Affect-as-Information Model to determine consumer purchase behaviour for luxury cosmetics products.

Di Pasquale, Alice, and Hannah Moody. Parabens and breast cancer. Breast Cancer UK, November 2024. https://doi.org/10.71450/7864836.

Full text
Abstract:
Parabens are Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) used as preservatives to stop the growth of microorganisms in cosmetics, personal care products and some processed foods. They can be ingested or absorbed through the skin and have been found in many body fluids and tissues, including in the breast. In laboratory studies, parabens were found to interfere with the female hormone oestrogen and increase the risk of mammary tumours in animals. However, only a limited number of human studies have been carried out and these are inconclusive regarding the possible link to breast cancer. Nonetheless, exposure to parabens should be reduced by seeking paraben-free cosmetics and personal care products. Regulations should also be tightened, especially for parabens officially recognised to be EDCs. Breast Cancer UK is calling for the phasing out and removal of EDCs from non-essential products.
