Puerto Rican communities have been a reality in many northeastern urban centers for over a century. Schools and classrooms have felt their presence through the Puerto Rican children attending school. The education of Puerto Ricans in U.S. schools has been documented for about seventy years, but in spite of numerous commissions, research reports, and other studies, this history is largely unknown to teachers and the general public. In addition to the research literature, a growing number of fictional accounts in English are providing another fertile avenue for understanding the challenges that

An analysis is presented of the results of a survey carried out to explore the apparent prestige of the English language in Costa Rica. We researched the perception of English as a language that generates opportunities for employment and economic growth. We surveyed 122 Costa Ricans from 15 to 66 years old. The data obtained suggest that English appears to have prestige in Costa Rica, and that it is well received by many as a foreign language that should continue to be taught in public institutions.

This survival advantage is more evident among the elderly, who have one of the lowest mortality rates in the world. Dietary factors may play a role in this extended longevity. We have shown that a traditional rural diet is associated with longer leukocyte telomere length—a biomarker of aging—among elderly Costa Ricans. For the written component of my thesis, I am attempting to make sense of a current strain in contemporary painting which, generally speaking, tends towards reduction, humble materiality, lack of overt, didactic critique, and a scholarly interest in outmoded or overlooked art historical movements and figures. These are tendencies with which, as a painter, I feel both affinities and differences. Rather than rigidly define a “movement,” I will identify prevalent modes but also highlight individual strategies. I will begin by outlining some of the basic, underlying problems in painting today.

Abstract In 2004, Costa Ricans lived, on average, to the age of 77, an almost identical life expectancy to that in the United States. Yet the U.S. per capita income was more than four times that of Costa Rica (WHO 2006). Even more striking, in 2000, inhabitants of the southern Indian state of Kerala, earning, on average, less than US$3,000 per year, had a life expectancy of 74.6 (Government of Kerala 2005), while Washington, DC residents, with almost $30,000 per capita annual income, had a life expectancy of 72.6 years (Phillips and Beasley 2005; U.S. Government 2005).

An influential body of scholarship argues that corruption behaves as a selffulfilling prophecy. The idea of this work is that levels of corruption emerge endogenously as a result of a society-wide coordination game in which ther individual returns to corrupt behavior are a function of how disposed towards corruption the other members of society are perceived as being. An empirical implication of this logic is that if one were to exogenously perturb beliefs about societal levels of corruption upward, willingness to engage in corruption should increase as a consequence.
