Abstract Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is widely acknowledged to be a critical issue facing plant operators in the oil, gas and chemical industries. CUI studies from a petrochemical facility have shown that 40-60% of pipe maintenance costs are due to CUI and approximately 10% of the total maintenance budget is spent repairing damage from CUI, mainly on pipes. The risk of corrosion under insulation is considered high in the temperature range 50 – 175°C (122 – 347°F) and extreme when in cyclic temperature service between -20 and 320°C (-4 – 608°F). Periodic inspection remains the best way to

Abstract Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques offer a wide range of benefits. Among these is the ability to manufacture a part to a near final geometry and functionality, while reducing the amount of required material and processing compared to conventional techniques. However, control of the produced microstructure and overall surface condition of the product is important to achieve the necessary mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. While electrochemical methods are often utilized to characterize the corrosion properties of additively manufactured samples, the methods are typical

Abstract Higher grade alloys such as super-duplex stainless steels have been the conventional choice when selecting corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs) for seawater or water-alternative gas (WAG) injection service. However, the use of less costly, leaner alloyed stainless steels has recently been given greater consideration in treated seawater systems where the dissolved oxygen concentration (DOC) is better controlled. Crevice corrosion exposure tests were conducted on nine (9) stainless steel alloys in synthetic seawater containing controlled DOC levels (100 ppb to 500 ppb range). The alloys ra

Conservative estimates for variable expenses (90th percentiles of historical costs) and revenues (10th percentiles of prices for revenues) were assumed for optimisation of the simulation in Aspen PlusTM software. The distributions of costs under parametric uncertainty were obtained using the Monte Carlo algorithm. Two optimisation scenarios for cost minimisation were developed. The increased stress can challenge the chemical treatment program in the areas of corrosion, deposition and microbiological control. The most recent financial crisis has led the industry to scrutinize and minimize all cooling tower operating costs, including those associated with the use of acid to control the pH of traditional stabilized phosphate program that operates in the near neutral pH range. This study compares the levelized cost of electricity generated with fossil fuels (including coal, natural gas, fuel oil, and diesel) and renewable or carbon-free energy sources (including hydro, wind, solar, nuclear and geothermal). A meta-study of power generation technology capital costs determined the range of capital costs across the various technologies as well as the range of cost estimates for each individual technology from the various data sources that were examined. Applying these capital costs to a range of operating assumption (such as fuel price and plant utilization rate) result

Studies have shown that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has some of the highest electricity and water consumption rates in the world. To understand the barriers to the adoption of energy and water efficiency, Emirates Wildlife Society in association with the World Wildlife Fund conducted 363 face-to-face interviews with representatives of companies tasked with energy and water management. The purpose was to understand the most important barriers hindering the UAE’s private sector from achieving wide-scale energy and water efficiency and to begin to identify solutions to mitigate these barriers.

While direct electrification appears to provide the most cost-effective route to decarbonization of commercial vehicles, uptake may be constrained by critical metal supply. Additionally, it will be many years before hydrogen power becomes decarbonized or if it can ever compete economically with direct electrification. An electric road system (ERS) could offer a highly efficient and cost-effective route to direct electrification that would greatly reduce the volume of batteries required, but pilot schemes are urgently needed to provide concrete data on operating costs for different ERS technolo

Long-range guided wave pipeline inspection is claimed to be able to inspect ranges of well over 30 meters (100 Feet) in either direction (i.e. total inspection greater than 60 Meters or 200 Ft.) from a single position. In terms of inspected meters per measurement and cost per meter this technique can be a fundamental improvement from conventional methods for pipeline inspection. For inspection of hard-to-access locations it offers a good on-stream screening alternative by being able to image the pipe section from an easier-access location. One of the first questions that has to be answered in the survey design process is "How many subjects should be interviewed?" The answer can have significant implications for the cost of project preparation, since in Latin America and the Caribbean costs per interview can range from US$20 to US$100. Traditionally, the sample size question has been answered in an unsatisfactory way by either dividing an exogenously fixed survey budget by the cost per interview or by employing some variant of a standard statistical tolerance interval formula. The answer is not to be found in the environmental ec
