Abstract Born Anne Marbury in 1591, in Alford, England, Anne Hutchin son was educated at home, where she had the benefit of her clergyman father’s library. At twenty-one she married William Hutchinson, a successful Alford merchant. They had fifteen children together. In 1634, the Hutchinsons emigrated with a group of fellow Puritans, following their minister, Rev. John Cotton, to Massachusetts Bay Colony in New England.

Medieval associations of St Margaret of Antioch with preg¬nancy and childbirth are well-documented, yet the hagiographical tradition associating her with preventing the birth of disabled children remains little remarked. This chapter examines London, British Library, Cotton MS Tiberius A.iii, in which an Old English Life of St Margaret promotes the deliverance of medieval Christians’ souls through the ‘healing’ of disabled bodies.
