Abstract:

Cottonseed was treated with several fungicide treatments in an effort to protect the seed and seedling from disease. Seed germination and vigor was evaluated in three Arizona locations; Maricopa, Marana, and Safford. Stand counts were taken on two separate dates after emergence at both Safford and Marana and once at Maricopa and percent emergence was calculated. Among the three locations two, Marana and Safford, showed significant differences among treatments. Treatment number 5 placed first at both locations where significant differences were found. Transgenic Bt cotton may have reduced susceptibility to aflatoxin contamination as a result of pink bollworm resistance. During 1995 and 1996, Bt cottonseed from several commercial fields in Arizona contained aflatoxin levels unacceptable for dairy use. Comparison of cottonseed with and without BGYF (bright-green-yellow fluorescence) from one highly contaminated (> 6,000 ppb aflatoxin Bj) Bt seed lot indicated that most contamination probably resulted from exposure of mature cotton to high humidity. Two upland cotton varieties (Deltapine 5415 and SureGrow 125) were subjected to various seed fungicide treatments to determine seedling emergence and vigor in a Mohave Valley field prone to Rhizoctonia infection of cotton seedlings. During 1998, cotton seedlings in this field exhibited symptoms associated with Rhizoctonia, Pythium, and Thielaviopsis fungi. Field experiments were conducted at four locations in Arizona (Yuma, Maricopa, Marana, Safford) to evaluate 16 cottonseed treatments on cotton that included 12 on Upland (Q. hirsutum L.) and 4 on Pima (Gossvpium barbadense L.). Stand counts were taken to evaluate the effectiveness of each treatment. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences among the treatments used for the Upland cottonseed. Transgenic Bt cotton varieties that are resistant to pink bollworm should sustain less feeding damage to bolls and cottonseed, compared to non-Bt varieties that are more susceptible to feeding damage by pink bollworm larvae. Prior to boll opening, the aflatoxin producing fungus Aspergillus flavus cannot penetrate undamaged cotton bolls. The performance of four immunochemical test kits in detecting aflatoxin contamination in cottonseed under non-laboratory conditions was evaluated. Naturally contaminated cottonseed was analyzed at cotton gins, ammoniation plants, cotton oil processing plants, a dairy farm and at the University of Arizona. A strain of Aspergillus flavus that does not produce aflatoxins was applied to soils planted with cotton at the Yuma Valley Agricultural Center in order to assess strain ability to competitively exclude aflatoxin producing strains during cotton boll infection and thereby prevent aflatoxin contamination of cottonseed. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a dieta de ovinos a base de caroço de algodão sobre parâmetros de desempenho, metabolismo de nutrientes, emissão de metano e qualidade da carne, bem como o efeito acumulativo e sinais de toxicidade causados pela ingesta?o de concentraco?es elevadas de gossipol livre presente na dieta dos animais, garantindo a segurança alimentar. The relatively high level of palmitic acid (22 mol%) in cottonseeds may be due in part to the activity of a palmitoyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) thioesterase (PATE).
