Abstract:
The presenters will demonstrate an approach to teaching counseling theories and counseling process that involves instructor demonstrations. Emphasized is the value of experiential approaches as a way for students to become actively involved in learning counseling process. Some of these experiential methods include: observing live ~ 193 ~ Sunday demonstrations by the instructor with students or outside clients; role‐playing counseling process with peers; opportunities to counsel as a student naturally would; preparing students to offer demonstrations of their own; instructor demonstrations as a part of supervision; and appropriately dealing with studentsʹ personal concerns that emerge as they begin to pragmatically implement counseling theories and process. Emphasized are ways to provide supervision and feedback for students, as well as methods of evaluation. The goal of the session is to demonstrate what might actually take place in a class. The session will start with a brief introduction followed by a demonstration of initial counseling process, a discussion of what could be learned and how the instructor might respond to student comments, and a final demonstration of a more complex counseling process with feedback from students.

Rachal, Kenneth Christopher. "Incorporating MMPI-2 test feedback into brief counseling : multiple source effects in the counseling process." Virtual Press, 1999. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1177988.

Full text
Abstract:
Test feedback has been recommended as an effective adjunct to brief therapy, despite a continued lack of empirical support. Previous research demonstrates the benefits of providing test feedback; however, it is unclear whether feedback interventions are responsible for producing positive outcomes. To clarify the efficacy of incorporating test feedback into the counseling process, a constructive research strategy was followed to examine collaborative MMPI-2 feedback as an isolated treatment component in brief counseling. A multiple source effect, as outlined by social influence theory (Strong, 1968) and the elaboration likelihood model (Petty & Cacioppo, 1981), was proposed to explain the benefits of collaborative test feedback. Specifically, the source characteristics of the counselor and the test were hypothesized to facilitate counseling outcomes.Forty undergraduate students, who were willing to discuss personal concerns with a counselor during two counseling sessions, were randomly assigned to either a counseling-only or a counseling + feedback intervention. The counseling process in both treatment groups was the same (i.e., participants answered personal questions), but MMPI-2 feedback was provided only in the counseling + feedback group. After each counseling session and a two-week follow-up, participants completed the Session Impact Scale, Outcome Questionnaire, Counselor Rating Form, Thought Listing procedure, as well as counseling attitudes and persuasion to change measures.Regardless of whether personality feedback was provided, the counseling sessions were evaluated favorably, participants' psychological functioning improved, and counselors were perceived to be influential. Although group differences were not large enough to be statistically significant, providing MMPI-2 feedback was associated with more reliable change in symptomatic distress. In addition, participants from both groups reported comparable levels of cognitive processing and counseling attitudes and were similarly persuaded to alter their behavior. Because significant changes occurred regardless of test feedback, counseling outcomes were not moderated by providing test feedback. Multiple source effects were not demonstrated in the test feedback process. These results indicate common therapeutic factors, such as answering therapeutic questions and finding solutions to presenting concerns, are responsible for treatment gains previously attributed to test feedback. Suggestions for future test interpretation research are provided and recommendations for theoretical development are discussed.

Sackett, Corrine Rae. "Meaningful Experiences of the Counseling Process from Multiple Perspectives." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77158.

Full text
Abstract:
The counseling process and relationship are inherently interconnected, and each person involved, or observing, has a unique perspective on what is significant. Thus, it is important for researchers to examine this process holistically for a more complete understanding of the counseling process and relationship. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of counselors-in-training (CITs) and clients in the counseling process with respect to what was meaningful, and the strength of the therapeutic relationship using a mixed methods approach. The following four research questions were a guide for this study: (a) What do CITs and clients experience as most meaningful in counseling? (b) What are the similarities and differences of what CITs and clients experience as meaningful in counseling? (c) How does the strength of the therapeutic relationship correspond to the depth of what CITs and clients experience as meaningful in counseling? (d) What are the similarities and differences of an observer's perspective and the experiences of the CIT and client of what is meaningful in counseling? These questions were explored through qualitative phenomenological interviews to capture the experiences of CITs and clients in a given counseling session, a quantitative instrument to measure the therapeutic relationship, and participant observation to gain an observer's perspective of the counseling session. Data analysis of the interviews revealed several themes of meaningful experiences for clients, CITs, and observer, with many similarities and some differences. Themes for clients were as follows: Counseling Relationship, Goals, Insight, Immediacy, Emotion, and Reflections on Counseling. Themes for CITs were: Counseling Relationship, Goals, Insight, Immediacy, Emotion, Nonverbals, Transference and Counter Transference, and CIT Negotiating the Counseling Process and their Role. Finally, observer themes were: Depth of Congruence, Goals, Insight, Immediacy, Nonverbals and Intuition, and Rescuing. There seems to be a slight connection between the strength of the therapeutic relationship and depth of meaningful experiences. More often than not, the stronger the therapeutic relationship, the greater depth of meaningful experiences of participants, however, these results are inconclusive. Findings from this research have implications for CITs, counselors, and counselor educators and supervisors.

Abstract:
In the practice of psychological counselling for clients, there are often socio-psychological difficulties that frustrate the process and make it impossible for the parties to achieve their goals. Misunderstanding, discrepancies, bad relations between the parties, distrust for each other, and other difficulties originate directly in situations of interaction between psychological counselors and their clients. The aforementioned difficulties require special analysis. This constitutes the main goal and novelty of the present study. Psychological counseling is deemed as an interaction, as actions of parties towards each other, underpinned by unity of the subject, place, and time of their activity. A psychological counselor and each of their clients undertake some actions to solve a target goal, including in situations of immediate interaction. As a result, each party sets and realises certain goals, is motivated by certain motives, is active, etc. They shall solve a target goal by mutual efforts. The article contains a summary on personal interaction situations, and on social-psychological phenomena that are generated by personalities in counselling situations. The article describes the essence, main phases and social-psychological difficulties of the interaction of psychological counselors and their clients. The following main methods selected for studying social-psychological difficulties of counseling interaction: diagnostic interview, questionnaire, final reports upon client checkups, expert evaluation. The findings confirmed the hypothesis of negative socio-psychological phenomena acting as a form of difficulty upsetting the counsellor-client interaction. The study has provided an opportunity to broaden the understanding of the content and the socio-psychological challenges of psychological counselling.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Teenage marriage have historically been associated with a variety of negative outcomes such as lower education levels, higher unemployment rates, worse health, lower wages and higher crime rates. Studies have revealed significant differences in most of the dimensions of marital quality, before and after marital counselling. The purpose of this study was to investigate evaluation of information and adolescent counseling center management to delay early marriage in adolescents. Subjects and Method: This was a qualitative study with a case study approach. The study was conducted at Public Senior High School 4 Jambi, Indonesia, from January to May 2019. 10 key informants were selected for this study. The data were collected by indepth interview and observation. The data were analyzed using source, data, and method triangulations. Results: The implementation of adolescent’s guidance and counseling center services still has room for improvement. There were several factors that lack of optimal results, for example the process of members or educators recruitment and training (input aspects), planning, report and evaluation system (process aspect) and students’ knowledge about health reproduction and adolescent marriage (output aspect). Conclusion: There is a need to improve information and counseling service. Keywords: evaluation, counseling and information center service, adolescents, delayed early marriage Correspondence: Muhammad Rifqi Azhary. Abstract:
An increase in a number of migrants intensifies the need for professional psychological support and counseling for the latter in order to facilitate their social-psychological adaptation. In order to organise the psychotherapeutic process effectively and provide quality services, it is necessary to pay special attention to clients’ expectations and perceptions of psychological help. Unfortunately, this issue is currently underrepresented in domestic psychological research. The success of the psychologist’s work largely depends on a clear understanding of the ethnicity, the uniqueness of each ethnic group and the appropriately chosen methods. This paper presents the results of a survey of counselling psychologists with experience of working with migrants from post Soviet countries as well as the results of a comparative analysis of the perceptions of the psychologist’s work with representatives of the dominant ethnic group and migrants. The study objective: explore perceptions of the work of a counselling psychologist among migrants and members of the dominant ethnic group. Respondents’ answers were processed using expert assessments. The study was participated by three groups: 20 psychologists (of the dominant ethnic group); 20 migrants, and 20 citizens of the Russian Federation without psychological education. The dominant attitude in the minds of many respondents is that psychotherapy is useless, ‘a person should cope on their own, telling a psychologist about their problems is a sign of weakness’. At the same time, most of the interviewees note that they (their families) have psychological problems, however, they are not prepared to work on solving them. It is worth highlighting the particular importance of psychological education and public enlightenment in order to develop a more adequate image of the psychologist and a clear understanding of the specifics of psychological counselling.
