Abstract:

We describe a two-phase study directed toward background reduction of a manual liquid scintillation counter and the interfacing of electronics for counting to a computer data acquisition system. Counter background reduction is achieved with afterpulse electronics, a high-performance cocktail, an auxiliary detector/guard and a special sample vial holder. The data acquisition system is comprised of an electronic signal processor and sorter for operating up to eight counters simultaneously and interfacing to a computer with software for data storage, acquisitions and age dating calculations. We discuss low-background counter modifications, electronic signal processing and computer software for 14C age dating.

Abstract:

This list contains results obtained between 1981 and 1985. Since the first description of the laboratory (Carmi, Noter & Schlesinger, 1971) the following changes were made. Two proportional counters are now used: 1) 0.5L volume, 0.865 ± 0.023 cpm background, 12.830 ± .134 cpm NBS oxalic acid standard (old); 2) 0.25L volume, 0.484 ± 0.023 cpm background, 6.185 ± .123 cpm NBS oxalic acid standard (old). The passive shield has been increased by 2cm of mercury next to the counters. For anticoincidence, a modular, hand-made gas counter is used. The laboratory was transferred to the ground floor of a 7-storey building. Data acquisition and processing are done with a sealer/buffer built at the institute and an IBM PC computer. Samples are filled into the counters and counted for ca 1000min at least twice. The sample preparation method and counter filling pressure have not been changed.

Abstract:

Monitoring the real-life mobility of stroke patients could be extremely useful for clinicians. Step counters are a widely accessible, portable, and cheap technology that can be used to monitor patients in different environments. The aim of this study was to validate a low-cost commercial tri-axial accelerometer-based step counter for stroke patients and to determine the best positioning of the step counter (wrists, ankles, and waist). Ten healthy subjects and 43 post-stroke patients were enrolled and performed four validated clinical tests (10 m, 50 m, and 6 min walking tests and timed up and go tests) while wearing five step counters in different positions while a trained operator counted the number of steps executed in each test manually. Data from step counters and those collected manually were compared using the intraclass coefficient correlation and mean average percentage error. The Bland–Altman plot was also used to describe agreement between the two quantitative measurements (step counter vs. manual counting). During walking tests in healthy subjects, the best reliability was found for lower limbs and waist placement (intraclass coefficient correlations (ICCs) from 0.46 to 0.99), and weak reliability was observed for upper limb placement in every test (ICCs from 0.06 to 0.38). On the contrary, in post-stroke patients, moderate reliability was found only for the lower limbs in the 6 min walking test (healthy ankle ICC: 0.69; pathological ankle ICC: 0.70). Furthermore, the Bland–Altman plot highlighted large average discrepancies between methods for the pathological group. However, while the step counter was not able to reliably determine steps for slow patients, when applied to the healthy ankle of patients who walked faster than 0.8 m/s, it counted steps with excellent precision, similar to that seen in the healthy subjects (ICCs from 0.36 to 0.99). These findings show that a low-cost accelerometer-based step counter could be useful for measuring mobility in select high-performance patients and could be used in clinical and real-world settings.

We present here the principal ideas of a new, fully computerized data acquisition system with pulse-rise background reduction, developed in the Gliwice Radiocarbon Laboratory, and our first results. The new system uses a microprocessor-controlled pulse and coincidence analyzer for acquisition of data from 3 of 4 proportional counter sets. The analyzer acquires and stores information on the pulse's amplitudes and rise-times and their coincidence with guard counters and radio-frequency shield. This feature allows us to separate pulses using anticoincidence information and pulse-shape discrimination. The described method of background reduction led to a significant increase in the factor of merit on 2 of 3 counters tested.

Abstract:

In this paper, we document the counter-data action and data activism of a grassroots affordable housing advocacy group in Atlanta. Our observation and insight into these data activities and strategies are achieved through ethnographic and engaged research and participatory design. We find that counter-data action through community-collected data is rooted in a legacy of Atlanta’s black activism and black scholarship; that this data activism enabled resource mobilization and critical conscious making; and that design and media production are essential post counter-data action activities in data activism. Based on these findings, we urge the field of open government data to broaden their concept of social impact of data to include the use data to mobilize resources within oppressed communities not to influence policy and government but to build capacities within community in order to transform, not join, political structures. We also advocate that scholars within the fields of open government data, critical data studies, and data activism recognize the legacy and historic practice of data activism by black communities working towards social change.

Abstract The potential utility of rod catch and automatic fish counter data as measures of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) abundance in Scottish rivers was assessed. The trend (long-term) and residual (short-term) variation in the net annual count for 12 counters were compared with the trend and residual variation in either the annual or spring (February–May) rod catch, as appropriate, for the fisheries district in which the counter is located. Trends were fitted using a cubic smoothing spline and compared using reference bands. In eight of the 12 short-term comparisons, the residuals were significantly correlated. The four incongruent short-term comparisons involved the shortest time-series (≤12 years) or lowest rod catches. In eight of the 12 long-term comparisons, the trends fell within the reference bands in 50% or more of the years. Rod catch and counter data both contain useful information about Atlantic salmon abundance, albeit on different temporal and spatial scales, which should be integrated into assessment schemes.

To guarantee the proper user access, an authentication scheme is required that can follow up data access. In this paper, counter based authentication verification is introduced. This method utilizes token generation and counter strategy. Elliptic curve based digital signature is employed in token generation. Along with the generated token, the data is encrypted and a counter value is appended to it. Whenever an authorized user views or modifies the stored data, the counter value is updated. Thus, this method significantly identifies an unauthorized data access.

The application of traditional gas or liquid scintillation counting (LSC) is necessary for assessing radionuclide activity in countries without operating accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) facilities. A simple and relatively inexpensive system of mini gas counters for measurement of radiocarbon in archaeological and environmental samples has been set up recently in the Kraków laboratory (Department of Environmental Physics, University of Mining and Metallurgy). The system is composed of a gas purification and counter filling line, three identical 15-mL copper/quartz counters, active and passive shielding, and an electronic unit with data acquisition. One counter measures 22 mg of carbon as CO2 with efficiency >95% at a background reduced to 0.044 cpm by a NaJ(Tl) guard counter and lead shield. The detection limit (1 σ) for a two-week measurement of 48 mL of CO2 is 0.52 pMC. The corresponding counting error of a 100 pMC environmental sample is 1.3 pMC for 22 mgC (one counter) and 0.75 pMC for 66 mgC (three counters filled with the same sample).

Abstract:

Global terrorism has created challenges to the criminal justice system due to its abnormal activities, which lead to financial loss, cyberwar, and cyber-crime. Therefore, it is a global challenge to monitor terrorist group activities by mining criminal information accurately from big data for the estimation of potential risk at national and international levels. Many conventional methods of computation have successfully been implemented, but there is little or no literature to be found that solves these issues through the use of big data analytical tools and techniques. To fill this literature gap, this research is aimed at the determination of accurate criminal data from the huge mass of varieties of data using Hadoop clusters to support Social Justice Organizations in combating terrorist activities on a global scale. To achieve this goal, several algorithmic approaches, including parallelization, annotators and annotations, lemmatization, stop word Remover, term frequency and inverse document frequency, and singular value decomposition, were successfully implemented. The success of this work is empirically compared using the same hardware, software, and system configuration. Moreover, the efficacy of the experiment was tested with criminal data with respect to concepts and matching scores. Eventually, the experimental results showed that the proposed approach was able to expose criminal data with 100% accuracy, while matching of multiple criminal terms with documents had 80% accuracy; the performance of this method was also proved in multiple node clusters. Finally, the reported research creates new ways of thinking for security agencies in combating terrorism at global scale.

Abstract:

The article proposes archival thinking as an analytical framework for studying Facebook. Following recent debates on data colonialism, it argues that Facebook dialectically assumes a role of a new archon of public records, while being unarchivable by design. It then puts forward counter-archiving – a practice developed to resist the epistemic hegemony of colonial archives – as a method that allows the critical study of the social media platform, after it had shut down researcher’s access to public data through its application programming interface. After defining and justifying counter-archiving as a method for studying datafied platforms, two counter-archives are presented as proof of concept. The article concludes by discussing the shifting boundaries between the archivist, the activist and the scholar, as the imperative of research methods after datafication.

Abstract:

A doorway counter, which detects a person underpass at a room entry/exit, may be the most accurate type of occupancy counters used in buildings. An occupancy counter, which uses a low-resolution IR-imager and Raspberry Pi board has been constructed. The imager provides only 8 x 8 pixels initial resolution, but it has been enhanced using two-dimensional interpolation. Due to the low absolute accuracy in temperature measurements, the imager is set to measure temperature difference between a target and background. Signal-to-noise ratio is also increased using discrete two-dimensional convolution filtering. The blob detection and tracking algorithm deduces the direction of an occupant and finally increments or decrements the counter. A heat signature varies between people and depends on person’s clothing. An on-board server on Raspberry Pi distributes the data via Wi-Fi to any client device in the net. The complete system includes also wireless PIR-sensors. The low-resolution IR occupancy counter has been compared with counters based on different technologies. The benefits of a low-resolution IR-imager are privacy preservation, operation capability in total darkness, energy-efficient passive operation and a low price.

Step counting represents a valuable approach to monitor the amount of daily physical activity. The feet, wrist and trunk have been demonstrated as the ideal locations to automatically detect the number of steps through body-worn devices (i.e., step counters). Key features of such devices are high usability, practicality and unobtrusiveness. Therefore, the opportunity to integrate step-counting functions in daily worn accessories represents one of the recent and most important challenges. In this context, the present study aimed to investigate the validity of a smart-glasses-based step-counter measure by comparing their performances against the most popular commercial step counters. To this purpose, smart glasses data from 26 healthy subjects performing simulated free-living walking conditions along a predefined path were collected. Reference measures from inertial sensors mounted on the subjects’ ankles and data from commercial (waist- and wrists-worn) step counters were acquired during the tests. The results showed an overall percentage error of 1%. In conclusion, the proposed smart glasses could be considered an accurate step counter, showing performances comparable to the most common commercial step counters.

Intelligent management of bullets at shooting ranges suffers from the limitations of manual bullet counting. Based on UV electro-optical technology, we have built a bullet counter and participated in field experiments. The bullet counter is composed of two modules, UV electro-optical module and data processing and communication module. In UV electro-optical module, a ‘solar blind’ UV detector is used to detect UV radiation of bullet flames. The embedded preamplifier of UV detector and the low-pass filter increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the system greatly. In data processing and communication module, analog signal, containing bullet impulses, is converted to digital signal and counted by a timer. The results of bullet counting can be read by USB. All these functions are implemented by STM32 (STM32F103CBT6), a microcontroller based on Cortex-M3. The bullet counter has been put into use at several shooting ranges and worked well.

Abstract:

A multicounter radiocarbon dating system was developed applying the experiences of the previous one-channel low-level counting facility. The counter system consists of nine electrolytic copper proportional counters of identical diameters with sensitive volumes of 0.35–0.7dm3 and filled with either methane at high pressure (6 bar) or CO2 at 1 bar. The inner counters are surrounded by an anticoincidence shield consisting of five multiwire proportional flat counters filled with propane. The pulses of the detectors are handled by integrated amplifiers, discriminators and anticoincidence units interfaced to a microprocessor-controlled data evaluation unit. Software is written in BASIC using ASSEMBLER sub-routines. Abstract:

Emergence of Industry 4.0 in current economic trend promotes the usage of Internet of Things (IoT) in product development. Counting people on streets or at entrances of places is indeed beneficial for security, tracking and marketing purposes. The usage of cameras or closed-circuit television (CCTV) for surveillance purposes has emerged the need of tools for the digital imagery content analysis to improve the system. The purpose of this project is to design a cloud-based people counter using Raspberry Pi embedded system and send the received data to ThingSpeak, IoT platform. The initial stage of the project is simulation and coding development using OpenCV and Python. For the hardware development, a Pi camera is used to capture the video footage and monitor the people movement. Raspberry Pi acts as the microcontroller for the system and process the video to perform people counting. Experiment have been conducted to measure the performance of the system in the actual environment, people counting on saved video footage and visualized the data on ThingSpeak platform.

Abstract:

This paper describes a new measure for presence in immersive virtual environments (VEs) that is based on data that can be unobtrusively obtained during the course of a VE experience. At different times during an experience, a participant will occasionally switch between interpreting the totality of sensory inputs as forming the VE or the real world. The number of transitions from virtual to real is counted, and, using some simplifying assumptions, a probabilistic Markov chain model can be constructed to model these transitions. This model can be used to estimate the equilibrium probability of being “present” in the VE. This technique was applied in the context of an experiment to assess the relationship between presence and body movement in an immersive VE. The movement was that required by subjects to reach out and touch successive pieces on a three-dimensional chess board. The experiment included twenty subjects, ten of whom had to reach out to touch the chess pieces (the active group) and ten of whom only had to click a handheld mouse button (the control group). The results revealed a significant positive association in the active group between body movement and presence. The results lend support to interaction paradigms that are based on maximizing the match between sensory data and proprioception.

We introduce some new models of infinite-state transition systems. The basic model, called a (reversal-bounded) counter machine (CM), is a nondeterministic finite automaton augmented with finitely many reversal-bounded counters (i.e. each counter can be incremented or decremented by 1 and tested for zero, but the number of times it can change mode from nondecreasing to nonincreasing and vice-versa is bounded by a constant, independent of the computation). We extend a CM by augmenting it with some familiar data structures: (i) A pushdown counter machine (PCM) is a CM augmented with an unrestricted pushdown stack. (ii) A tape counter machine (TCM) is a CM augmented with a two-way read/write worktape that is restricted in that the number of times the head crosses the boundary between any two adjacent cells of the worktape is bounded by a constant, independent of the computation (thus, the worktape is finite-crossing). There is no bound on how long the head can remain on a cell. (iii) A queue counter machine (QCM) is a CM augmented with a queue that is restricted in that the number of alternations between non-deletion phase and non-insertion phase on the queue is bounded by a constant. A non-deletion (non-insertion) phase is a period consisting of insertions (deletions) and no-changes, i.e., the queue is idle. We show that emptiness, (binary, forward, and backward) reachability, nonsafety, and invariance for these machines are solvable. We also look at extensions of the models that allow the use of linear-relation tests among the counters and parameterized constants as "primitive" predicates. We investigate the conditions under which these problems are still solvable.
