Abstract:
I de seneste år har forskning og udvikling på levende byer udviklet sig på grund af kompleksitet og mangfoldighed af levekårsstandarder. Cities all over the world are growing day by day. Developed countries are trying hard to reach a level where the liveable conditions can be achieved and they are managing this ongoing challenge with a certain standard. Liveable condition means ensuring every aspect of living elements. Fast growing countries like Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Pakistan etc are developing but unfortunately they can not be considered as the desired liveable condition until now. In this paper, the author will focus on the liveable conditions of one fast growing city of developing countries, which is the capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka. Abstract:
The rising popularity of country music in the United States since WWII is a cultural phenomenon intimately related to the ascendance of conservative values, leaders, and movements over the same period. By routinely celebrating themes like heterosexual love, the patriarchal nuclear family, hard work, individualism, freedom, patriotism, religion, and small-town life, country music provided the soundtrack for the insurgent conservatism of politicians like George Wallace, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan. In the sixties and seventies, while other forms of popular music (rock, folk, soul) articulated the values of liberals, socialists, hippies, war protestors, feminists, and civil rights activists, country music alone stood for the "traditional" values cherished by the so-called "silent majority" that powered the rise of the Right. The spread of both country music and conservatism is also a reflection of the "southernization" of America---the diffusion across the nation of cultural and political traits long associated with the South.

Abstract:
Analysts, politicians and international players from all over the world look at China as one of the most powerful countries on the international scenario, and as a country whose economic development can significantly impact on the economies of the rest of the world. However many aspects of this country have still to be investigated. First the still fundamental role played by Chinese rural areas for the general development of the country from a political, economic and social point of view. In particular, the way in which the rural areas have influenced the social stability of the whole country has been widely discussed due to their strict relationship with the urban areas where most people from the countryside emigrate searching for a job and a better life. In recent years many studies have mostly focused on the urbanization phenomenon with little interest in the living conditions in rural areas and in the deep changes which have occurred in some, mainly agricultural provinces. An analysis of the level of infrastructure is one of the main aspects which highlights the principal differences in terms of living conditions between rural and urban areas. In this thesis, I first carried out the analysis through the multivariate statistics approach (Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis) in order to define the new map of rural areas based on the analysis of living conditions. In the second part I elaborated an index (Living Conditions Index) through the Fuzzy Expert/Inference System. Finally I compared this index (LCI) to the results obtained from the cluster analysis drawing geographic maps. The data source is the second national agricultural census of China carried out in 2006. In particular, I analysed the data refer to villages but aggregated at province level.

Betar, Nagat Ali. "Computer use as a social activity : a study involving Libyan women living away from their home country." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.555827.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate displacement and the migrant experience, particularly in relation to the under-researched area of middle class migration, and the role of the computer in sustaining relationships at a distance. The participants were a group of elite Libyan women who lived with their husbands and children in North Manchester were the focus of the study. The focus of the study was centred on showing how these Libyan women used home computing and the internet as a social tool. A qualitative research methodology was utilised in this study. The data consisted of exploratory semi-structured interviews with a Libyan mother and her daughter, and a series of group discussions collected from Al Lamma gatherings (women's social gatherings) which were attended by Libyan women of different backgrounds. The use of Al Lamma gatherings provided a culturally appropriate setting in which the women were able to express their views more freely than might have been the case in more traditional research settings such as group interviews or focus groups. The women's group discussion transcripts were translated from spoken Libyan Arabic into English. Participant- observation field notes, reflective extracts and diary notes were also part of the research data. The analysis of the interviews and the women's group discussions revealed important issues as a result of using home computing and the internet as a social activity. Home computing was used as a vehicle for informal learning and self-development. However the women found it necessary to overcome various barriers and obstacles to their access to home computing. For instance, conflict and power relations in Libyan families in North Manchester were reflected in members' access to and use of home computers, prompting strategies such as passive resistance by the women in order to secure access to home computing and the social and leisure goods that it offers. As a result, it is suggested, home computing contributed to the empowerment of the Libyan women participants. Culture and religion also had influences on family structures, and therefore upon practices around home computing and intemet use. Further issues discussed in the study included the role of home computing in sustaining real and 'imagined' community, and the significance of engaging with virtual realities for children's development. The thesis also addressed issues related to the role of the English language in creating hierarchies of knowledge and power among researchers. The thesis identifies a need for educators and policy makers to recognize the existence of middle class migrants who have diversity of needs and identities. It is suggested that the engagement with home computing by such migrant groups could have implications for classroom teaching or designing effective courses online. The thesis identifies a need for further research on education, employment and empowerment in relation to middle class immigrant women from under-represented groups in the United Kingdom. The experience of children of immigrant families or transnational families is also identified as a topic for future research. Finally, the thesis recommends enhancing an appreciation of differences by teaching about different social arrangements and cultures in the English education system.

The thesis concerns the appropriation of breathing and selective permeability principles of materials applied in the construction of our houses, departing from the usage of fibersoil. The fibersoil technique, derived from constructive knowledge of the country that usually adopts raw clay, is investigated in a series of experiments intending to promote an interaction between this traditional know-how and the occupation of urban spaces. From this framework, the enhancement of the process, based on the methodology developed in PUC-Rios LILD - Laboratory of Investigation in Living Design, establishes a perspective of sustainable usage adequate to the citys housing conditions.

Abstract:
While I spent 7 years of study, experience and dedication to this work, the building construction has passed evolution from construction boom to contemporary building crisis. Demand for cheap building construction, materials and family housing increased sharply. Energy prices are rising every year... It seems that we will all have to deal with our essential task today or in the near future . This task is mean to prevent the current rate of degradation and destruction of our planet's climate and our environment. In this point of view, it looks the question of energy-saving construction very topical. By entering the study was to examine the possibilities of environmental friendly housing in rural areas in terms of environmental issues. My hypothesis was if can I determine the suitable candidate for the construction of passive houses themselves by comparing their characteristic of pre-defined construction samples. My objective is to offer builders and designers overview of suitable building systems with the possibility to compare the various factors influencing the decision on the selection of a builder´s construction for a house. The thesis presents the comparison of seven structural systems as a basic element of architecture. In the implementation of energy-efficient house is an architectural form often conditioned by structure. For this reason it is necessary to offer this kind of overview with options and parameters of individual building systems, which can then be used by architect to design a house for the builder - free and easy realization of his own, let´s say DIY (do it yourself). For builders (mean investors) of DIY houses is economy and finance a crucial question, therefore, for this reason I will evaluate suitable building system which is relative performance vs. price in the end. It is necessary to take into account the architecture of the house and especially the space layout and design and the attitude with the context of the rural areas environment. My pupose was to prove that good architectural design can be used with of low-cost, energy-saving and environmental friendly house built in DIY way.

Abstract:
Living Without: Stories of Vandler County As Told By James Madison Redd studies the transition of the rural, and behind-the-times South, which was once firmly situated in place and time, into the present where Southern identity has become confused. The stories follow a Faulknerian trend by sharing a setting in a fictional county located in North Mississippi. All of the stories are interrelated and contain common characters. The genre is the Southern Gothic, and the time range is from the sixties to the present. Preceding the collection of stories is a critical introduction that explores the possibility of expanding the definition of movement, thereby increasing its significance within the craft of fiction.

Abstract:
This study details the life stories of three former juvenile delinquents currently living in Sedgwick County, Kansas. The participants who are now adults reported extensive criminality and involvement in the juvenile justice system as juveniles. The study utilizes a qualitative collective case study methodology. A corollary purpose of the study was to determine if findings could be couched in Robert Agnew's (1992) General Strain Theory. Data analysis subsequently revealed six common themes among participants that presented challenges for their desistance from criminality as juveniles. These themes are: (1) lack of parental control, (2) living in a high crime community, (3) experiencing school failure, (4) displaying early signs of delinquency through aggression, (5) substance abuse, (6) and having a desire to obtain money. Moreover, the results suggest that these themes taken in constellation with one another seemed to be salient in their criminality as juveniles. Finally, the results demonstrated several sources of strain in participants' lives at the time of their offending. Therefore, the results of this study in part can be explained by General Strain Theory.

Abstract:
Out of all fifty states, Oregon has the ninth highest population of undocumented immigrants as a proportion of the state's total population. I conducted 20 formal and informal interviews with undocumented Latino/a immigrants living in Eugene and Springfield in order to find out how these immigrants maneuver the system in order to acquire housing, work, social resources, and other things that they need to survive. These interviews ultimately revealed that immigrants use social capital to circumvent these barriers and that the largest barriers that they face to survival and integration all ultimately revolve around a lack of access to a government issued photo ID/driver's license and language barriers. After conducting these interviews and researching how other jurisdictions have worked to integrate immigrants, I offer specific local planning and public policy recommendations for how to collaboratively integrate undocumented Latino/a immigrants into our community.

Full text
Abstract:
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a serious public health issue in this country and a major contributor to infant mortality in African American populations. African Americans have one of the highest rates of SIDS, some of which is due to increased risk factors for SIDS, such as prone sleeping and bed-sharing, as well as a lack of adherence to the SIDS risk reducing recommendations. Little is understood about this lack of adherence in the African American population or how to effectively address it but some research suggests a link between parental health beliefs of SIDS and the risk reducing recommendations and the implementation of these recommendations. This study used quantitative methods to gather data about the health beliefs and perceptions of SIDS among African American women living in Service Planning Area (SPA) Six of Los Angeles County to better understand the link between beliefs about SIDS and how this relates to implementation of the safe infant sleeping recommendations, specifically bed-sharing and prone sleeping. A self-administered questionnaire was developed to collect data using the Health Belief Model and several of its concepts as a guiding framework to assist with the construction of the questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed electronically through the survey software program, Survey Monkey and analyzed using statistical software, SPSS. Exploratory factor analysis found the questionnaire reliable and valid upon the removal of four items, including the construct of cues to action. The new 19-item questionnaire suggested that the women felt that SIDS was a big problem but didn't feel as susceptible. There was also a clear confusion about prone sleeping position. Overall, the data suggests a need for tailored educational campaigns in African American communities to increase awareness of and susceptibility to SIDS and stressing the benefits of supine sleeping position.

Background: The goal of ART therapy is sustained viral load suppression with good immunological and clinical response. This optimal response to therapy results in the prevention of emergent ART drug-resistant mutations, decrease morbidity, and AIDS-related mortality and sustained retention on ART. Kenya, like most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, has scaled-up the use of ART and is currently implementing a “Test and Treat” strategy in which any client identified and confirmed with an HIV diagnosis is initiated ART. Few studies have been carried out to ascertain the response of HIV patients initiating treatment in resource-limited settings. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that a certain proportion of patients fail to adequately respond to therapy and therefore require therapy modification. Aim: To assess treatment outcomes and calculate retention of HIV infected adult patients’ (15 years and above) initiating ART at Kakamega County General Hospital. The primary study outcome was the treatment outcome of patients-initiated ART two to three years prior to the study; while, the role of WHO criteria for screening treatment failure was assessed as a secondary outcome. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study in which patients initiating ART between June 2014 and March 2015 were followed up until they were censored or study closed in August 2017. 284 patients were enrolled in the study after accurately matching information in their clinic files and the electronic medical record. Data were collected from patient records using a chart abstraction tool and transferred to an Access database from where the cleaning and validation of entries were done. Data from Access was transferred to STATA 15.1 for analysis. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were then performed to answer the research questions.

Barbour, Leslie. "Knowledge, Beliefs, and Perceptions About Tuberculosis Among Haitian Immigrants and Haitian Americans Living in Miami-Dade County, Florida." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4835.

Abstract:
Tuberculosis (TB) kills 1.7 million people each year, and 1/3rd of the world's population is estimated to have latent TB. It was once the deadliest disease in the United States but is now relatively rare and, if treated properly, it is curable. Migrants from TB-endemic countries, such as Haiti, are one source of TB transmission to the US, and the prevalence of TB remains high and is increasing in Little Haiti, Florida. Data on the knowledge and perceptions of Haitian immigrants and Haitian Americans about TB is inadequate. The purpose of this qualitative research was to study the TB-related knowledge, beliefs, and perceptions of Haitian Americans and Haitian immigrants living in Miami, FL. The health belief model formed the theoretical framework of this study. Thirty male and female Haitian American and Haitian immigrants were interviewed. Phenomenological research was used, and open coding was conducted to analyze the data. Results showed that a large majority of the participants in this sample were knowledgeable about the nature of TB - its spread, symptoms, seriousness, and how to get information about it, but many were concerned about the social stigma attached to having the disease. Recommendations include the development of outreach, education and prevention programs through doctors and other health care professionals, as well as religious and community leaders, in order to increase awareness of the disease, enhance access to treatment, minimize stigma and reduce the incidence of the disease.

Abstract:
Magister Public Health - MPH
Background: With the improvements in the effectiveness and availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART), perinatally infected children are surviving to adolescence and emerging as a significant sub-population living with HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe. Adolescents, aged 10-19 years, face unique challenges related to adherence to chronic medication due to this period of vulnerability that is characterised by decreased parental support and supervision, decreased inhibition, increased risk-taking, and immature judgement. It is widely reported that poor adherence to ART leads to viral rebound, disease progression and drug resistance, in addition to increasing the risk of transmitting resistant strains of HIV to others. It is imperative to determine the factors that influence ART adherence among HIV positive adolescents so that effective interventions can be put in place. The current study described the factors that are associated with adherence to ART among HIV positive adolescents in Zimbabwe. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey of 136 randomly selected adolescents (10-19 years) who were receiving ART at two referral hospitals in Masvingo District in 2019 was undertaken. A questionnaire was administered to collect data on socio-demographic characteristics, adherence and factors related to adherence such as person/patient, health system, medication, disease characteristics and social factors. Clinical data were extracted from the Electronic Monitoring Patient System. SPSS v24 was used for descriptive and inferential analysis. Results: More than half of the participants (61%) had combined optimal adherence (dose adherence, schedule adherence and adhered to dietary instructions) in the previous three days. The most frequent reasons reported for missing HIV medications in the previous month was being away from home (50%); forgetfulness (25%); and having too many pills to take (25%). In bivariate analysis, only duration of time since HIV diagnosis was significantly associated with combined adherence to ART in the previous three days. Conclusion: Tailored interventions are recommended to address low adherence amongst adolescents. These interventions should include convenient clinic appointment schedules for adolescents to pick up medication, reminders to take medication, regimen change to a single dose, and peer education and adherence clubs to improve knowledge about HIV and treatment, and curb treatment fatigue.

Abstract:
In sparsely populated municipalities, there is a large increase of elderly people in relation to people of working age. This will entail a great need for housing for the elderly, and at the same time resources for the care of the elderly. The aim for this study is to examine how older people within Storuman-, Sorsele and Vilhelmina municipality perceive their current housing and other forms of housing for the future, and also to analyze how the housing demand is met now or in the plans for future development within the municipalities. Interviews have been conducted with both elderly but also with people who work with housing issues within the municipalities. There are incentives that the demand of shared housing will increase. The elderly feel a lack of meeting places and they prefer shared forms of housing over regular apartments. The municipalities have different challenges and different housing supply and therefore they have different approaches and plans to cope with the future housing demand for elderly.

Abstract:
This study has examined the presence of A. actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, in 10 children and adolescents in Västerbotten County, who had been referred to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry due to suspected periodontal disease. Based on previous studies we hypothesized that the majority of the enrolled subjects would be hosts for A. actinomycetemcomitans. A second hypothesis was that a relationship between periodontal disease and heredity would be found.   The aim was to study to which extent the enrolled patients were infected with A. actinomycetemcomitans and to enhance the general knowledge of the bacterial composition in children/adolescents with clinical signs of periodontal disease. Another aim was to examine the nature of the disease in relation to heredity, oral habits and ethnicity. A third aim was to compare PCR and cultivations for detection of pathogens.     Sampling was made from pathological periodontal pockets by a dentist or a dental hygienist. Samples were sent to a laboratory for analysis by two different methods: cultivation and PCR. Our results showed that the majority of the participants had non-European ethnicity, were positive for A. actinomycetemcomitans and 3 of 7 A. actinomycetemcomitans-positive subjects exhibited high leukotoxicity. No subject harbored the JP2 leukotoxin promoter genotype. Serotypes a-d and f, but not e, were detected. We concluded that the majority of the patients were infected with A. actinomycetemcomitans, some of them had high leukotoxicity but none of them had the JP2-genotype. The culture based analysis was similar in terms of detecting A. actinomycetemcomitans compared to the PCR method.

Wright, Archimore Alexander. "The lived experience of registered nurses caring for patient living with HIV/AIDS in Broward County, Florida| A phenomenological inquiry." Thesis, Barry University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10257646.

Full text
Abstract:

Background: Vulnerability, opportunistic infections, and infection-related illnesses, caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), progressively overwhelms the human immune system resulting in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to slowly and non-discriminately spread continentally with dramatic consequences on the life expectancy of anyone who develops this pervasive illness/disease. The virus, HIV is well documented and is commonly transmitted through risky behaviors of human contact, and if left unattended and untreated, leaves a path of destruction and devastation of monumental proportions. HIV/AIDS dramatically leads to long struggles and concerns for human rights and end-of-life (EOL) care.

Purpose: The purpose of this research study was to gain an in-depth epistemology of registered nurses lived experiences in caring for people living with HIV/AIDS in Broward County, Florida. Philosophical Underpinnings: The philosophical underpinnings that directed this study were buried in the interpretivistic paradigm to investigate the meaning of a particular sample of registered nurses using a qualitative research approach.

Method: This study employed a descriptive/interpretive paradigm navigated by Max van Manen’s phenomenological method. Purposive and snow-ball sampling were utilized by the researcher to recruit registered nurses (RNs) for the study. Data collection was acquired using digital voice recorders to conduct semi-structured face-to-face interviews with a maximum of 12 elected participants.

Results: Four major related themes were conclusive from the findings of the study, as unknowing, incapacitating, dejecting, and nurturing, and five sub-themes of swimming in deep waters, exasperating, dreading occupational exposures, feeling of emptiness, and emotional and physical support through this phenomenological descriptive/interpretive exploration. These themes and sub-themes showcased registered nurses experience in providing care to patients living with HIV/AIDS in Broward County, Florida. Margaret Newman’s (1978) grand theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness was the theoretical framework applied to the themes/sub-themes for further understanding.

Conclusion: This phenomenological research inquiry coupled with Max van Manen descriptive/interpretive methodology exhibited the complexity registered nurses endure when providing care to patients living with HIV/AIDS in Broward County, Florida. The results of the study emphasized the quintessence of nurse’s experiences by illuminating the fear of the unknown dealing with the disease HIV/AIDS, in which they displayed courage, resilience, empathy, and nurturing while caring for this fragile population. The experiences described in this study by the participants caring for patients living with HIV/AIDS in Broward, County Florida, highlighted the numerous effects of the disease on healthcare and nurses alike. There is a necessity for a comprehensive approach to make it possible to provide appropriate nursing care that can also address the new threat of HIV infection in Broward County, which has developed rapidly than expected. Participant’s enthusiasm in sharing their life world experience on caring for patients living with HIV/AIDS culminate the general purpose of this phenomenological study.

Abstract:

This study explored the lived experience of spouses living with depressed partners. A qualitative phenomenological,
exploratory study design was used to explore the lived experience of the spouses, identifying the coping strategies and challenges that they face as they live with the depressed partners. A purposive sample of seven spouses living with their depressed partners who were being treated in outpatient department were recruited to participate in the study.

In-depth, face-to-face interviews were conducted, audiotaped with the participants&rsquo
permission and transcribed verbatim. The data from the transcripts, field notes, and demographic questionnaires was organized ready for analysis. Thematic data analysis was used to code the data, and group the codes to form categories. The categories were further regrouped to form themes. The themes were conceptualized and contextualized to uncover the meaning that the spouse carers attached to the lived experience.

It emerged that most of the spouses described their partners and the relationship negatively due to the burden of care. The male carers as compared to the female carers expressed the negativity more and it impacted on the quality of care they were providing to the depressed partners. It was revealed that inadequate professional support was linked with the ineffective coping strategies employed by the spouse carers. Hence, most of the spouse carers presented with symptoms of depression and were at the stage of impoverishment according to the adaptive potential assessment model. A recommendation to involve spouse carers in the treatment plan and improve the support system to the spouse carers was made to the stakeholders of health service providers at the primary health level.

The objective of the thesis was to discuss how a child living in the countryside of southern Taiwan was introduced into a world of literature. The researcher aimed at understanding how this experience had changed the child’s behaviors with the guidance of significant adults. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to identify the characteristics of the child’s behaviors during the reading process The researcher participated personally in this action research in order to assist the target child in book reading activities. After 10-month in-field observation, video- and audio-tape data collection, and analysis, the research had the following findings: 1. At the beginning of the reading process, due to the deficiency of background knowledge, the child was unable to relate himself to the content of the books and applied several tactics accordingly. For example, use of body language and facial expressions to exhibit displeasure, feelings of restlessness, inability to concentrate, diverting adults’ attention, or skimming the pages quickly in order to end the reading activity. Thus, at the initial phase of this research, 偉翰, my case study child, was not very fond of books and reacted negatively. Nor did he have lots of interactions with the books. 2. In the middle of the reading process, by exploiting books via a variety of learning activities, such as play, cooperative learning with adults and peers, and language games, the child began to have active interactions with adult models, with more competent peers, and with books. He learned how to refer to prior experiences during reading, use pictures as clues for information searching and tracking, as well as remember the story line for later deferred imitation. 3. At the final phase of the reading process, we discovered the individual child could infer, induce the similarities between books, and raise questions based on the content in the books. During deferred imitation, he would narrate the story content in rich vocabulary, duplicate the examples made by the adults previously, and use private speech to connect himself with the books and to monitor his own thinking process. Eventually, he could position himself as a storyteller and share the books with others, and as an actor dramatizing the stories of the books in front of audiences. The implications of the study were: (1) more social organizations are needed to support the establishment of reading movements in the remote areas of Taiwan. (2) we should empower individuals, their families and schools, and the counties they lived in by giving them sufficient cultural exposures. Researchers in the future are suggested to do more in-depth field research, and unearth problems and phenomena unique to the rural areas in Taiwan. Through the advancement of reading, it would be promising to shorten the gap between cities and country sides.

Lovett, Raymond William. "Mob and country : a role for identity in alcohol screening for Indigenous Australians living in the ACT and region." Phd thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/150701.

Full text
Abstract:
Risky alcohol consumption is responsible for seven per cent of all Indigenous deaths in Australia and is a precursor to many diseases. Despite high rates of risky consumption, screening is not routine practice in primary health care and the validity of screening instruments (other than the Indigenous Risk Impact Screen) have not been performed for Indigenous peoples. Enquiring about risky alcohol use can cause discomfort for health practitioners and clients. One way of overcoming this is to create an environment free from a number of social contexts. My first aim was to assess the reliability and validity of commonly used alcohol screening instruments. This then provided an opportunity to assess the level of risky alcohol use in the study population, my second aim. My third aim was to assess whether a culturally mediated alcohol screen could improve reporting of risky alcohol consumption. It involved starting the interview with questions about the participant's 'mob and country'. My fourth aim was to determine whether the socio-cultural factors or acculturation stress reflected determinants of drinking for the study population. My final aim was to examine facilitators and moderators of risky drinking. I conducted a computer-assisted cross-sectional survey of Indigenous people (n=121) in the primary survey and 45 participants completed a re-test survey (for test re-test reliability). The surveys were conducted among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) region from July 2010 to August 2011. Participants were randomised into a 'mob-ask' screening group (n=53) and a 'screening as usual' group (n=69). Five alcohol screening instruments were administered. A modified Vancouver Index of Acculturation (VIA) were used to examine how Indigenous people viewed their participation in heritage and dominant society cultures, the Drinking Motives Questionnaire (DMQ) to examine motives for drinking and the Kessler 10 (K10) to examine psychological distress. All alcohol screening instruments were reliable, but shorter screening instruments were as reliable and valid as existing instruments. Half the participants were drinking above recommended guideline limits and the mean age of initiation to alcohol was 14 years, 13 years for males and 15 years for females. Being male, living in a dependent household situation and being excluded from education were associated with risk-taking behaviour and risky alcohol consumption. Alcohol screening instrument mean scores were higher in the 'mob-ask' screen group compared to the control group. Participants were highly integrated (had a positive association with both heritage and dominant society culture) and, as anticipated, socio-cultural factors, rather than acculturation stress, predicted risky alcohol use. Health gains achieved through reducing consumption and drinking in specific situations (particularly around children and family members) moderated drinking. Family members were also identified by participants as facilitators to drinking and risk-taking behaviour. Screening approaches for risky drinking do not require major modification but do need to be focused on younger people (from 13 years) and screening needs to be routine.

Abstract:
This thesis tells a story of the lands belonging to the Darumbal people located in the coastal region of Central Queensland, Australia, through the lives of a select number of young people connected to the Country as either Traditional Custodians or as members of other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups who have relocated to this area. In particular, the research examines how ten young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experienced school and how they leveraged those experiences to transition into family and community roles as young leaders. The thesis concludes that participants actively pursued a process of ‘belonging and becoming’. School spaces were appropriated to facilitate their desire for ‘belongingness’ and skills, abilities and aspirations were developed consistent with the goal of ‘becoming’ the future of their families and communities. Their recent experiences of completing Year 12, working and studying on Darumbal country informed post-school pathways that are simultaneously professional and cultural by necessity. The findings illustrate the environment which young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people studying and working on Darumbal country have identified as valuable in their pursuit of belonging and becoming at the core of their identities. Whilst this research examines a very specific group of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a particular location the learnings from this study could offer an insight into other groups of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on other Aboriginal and Torres Strait lands; and potentially extended to other First Nations’ people elsewhere.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to measure and compare athletes’ dietary intake to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data that represents individuals without intellectual disabilities (ID), and to determine the effect of living arrangements on dietary intake and diet quality of the athletes. Dietary intakes from the athletes’ three-day food records, previously collected in 2009, were analyzed using the Self Administered 24-hr Recall (ASA24). Results indicated individuals with ID have a poorer quality diet than Americans without ID. Overall, the lowest HEI-2005 score (e.g., poorest diet quality) was observed among the subjects who lived in the family home (41.4 ± 7.6) and the highest HEI-2005 score was observed among the subjects who lived in a group home (45.3 ± 6.4). Results show that the more food choice responsibility given to an individual with ID the lower the quality diet, and the less responsibility given to an individual with ID the higher the quality diet (p≤0.01). Determining the nutrient intake and diet quality of individuals with ID may help identify ways to reduce the rate of obesity in this population, and provide health professionals with information needed to develop appropriate educational efforts.

T County younger children’s home-living safety situation Hsu Chih-pen Abstract The purpose of this study is to conduct, with developing “Questionnaire for T County younger children’s home-living safety situation”, surveys and analyses from such aspects as younger children’s home-living safety knowledge, younger children’s home-living safety attitude, management behavior of younger children’s home-living environment, younger children’s home-living safety environment facilities and improving willingness for younger children’s home-living safety environment; through demographic characters of the subjects and the above analyses, we explore the distribution of dangerous factors of T County younger children’s home-living safety; and we compare the differences between urban and rural T County younger children’s home-living safety situations in households. We set the parents of kindergartens and nurseries in T County as the samples and adopt stratified cluster random sampling setting class as the unit of a cluster and we draw 3600 parents as the samples. After conducting statistic analysis towards the collected data we have the important conclusions as follows: I. As for management behavior of younger children’s home-living environment, it’ frequently fair, but the parents have very low points of younger children’s home-living safety knowledge with the correct answer rate as only 52.38%; as for younger children’s home-living safety attitude, it performs a low dangerous perception towards unsafe situation so that, among 19 unsafe situations, there are only 5 that are considered over 50% of the probability of younger children’s incidental injuries by the parents, especially for “while I’m busy and no other people who can help, I let the other children under 12 accompany or play with” or “using the time when the children are sleeping at home to go out for business”, most of the parents think their probabilities of danger are low and very low . II. As for younger children’s home-living environment facilities, among 10 fundamental important facilities, over 30% of the parents who don’ t have 5 of them, especially 49.7% of the families which don’ t achieve “post emergency telephone numbers of something like medical agencies at around telephone set or other apparent spots”. But what’s conforming is that there are 53.6% of the parents who are willing to improve this within one month to reach the preparatory period; but for the other items, the percentage of the parents who are willing to improve within one month is low. For those parents who are willing to improve this within one month, we may provide them with information of improving program to lower their improving obstruct; while for those who have no improving willingness in a half year, we should reinforce their safety perception. III. In T County, averagely each child will get injury 0.13 times every week. When the home-living injuries happened to children, 8.7% of them are staying alone; only 10.77% of parents took first aid-related classes of whom each one took only 0.16 hours of first aid classes during 2 years. Since there’s a salient correlation between parents’ children’s home-living safety attitude and first aid classes they took, we should open more classes related to prevention of children’s home-living safety incidents and first aid. IV.
