Many countries around the world are promoting the increase of transparency regarding the ultimate ownership of companies. Indeed, this is a useful tool for stopping illicit financial flows and creating fair markets. However, it must also be considered thatsuch measures may violate the right to privacy and pose threats to personal security. The need to protect this privacy may lead some companies and owners to refuse to disclose this information.Furthermore, many organizations and individuals have warned that disclosing beneficial ownership information may be ineffective or could lead to the spr

The credit landscape in commercial private finance is fast evolving as available funds continue to chase for enhanced returns, for optimised risk acceptance. On the other hand, developing countries, and economies in transition continue to grapple with factors such as public debt, widening fiscal gaps often exacerbated by persistent budget deficits. As a result, governments prioritise provisioning of critical public goods, which then leaves a gap in the financing of less urgent, yet developmentally important investments. This gap is often left to state-owned Development Finance Institutions, or

During this period, Suriname has been characterized by good economic performance largely due to prudent macroeconomic and debt management coupled with a world-wide commodity boom. Nonetheless, given data paucity, it is unclear whether the recent boom was targeted enough towards poverty reduction and what progress has been made towards the Millennium Development Goals. To become a more effective development partner in Suriname, the IDB should reconsider its modus operandi by (i) increasing funding towards

Abstract:
The Global Streaming Strategy Assessment identifies the range of sectors emerging in the streaming video marketplace. It identifies how key conditions such as ownership and underlying technology norms shape different experiences by country and the characteristics that organise distinct sectors of service. Abstract:
Economic research on sexual minority individuals in developing countries has been constrained by the scarcity of nationally representative surveys asking about sexual orientation. This paper merges and harmonizes census data from eight Latin American countries to document socio-economic disparities between different-sex and same-sex couples. Overall, although there are some exceptions, individuals in same-sex couples are on average younger than women and men in different-sex couples, are less likely to identify as Indigenous (while differentials for African descendants vary by country), have h

Abstract:
In this working paper, the authors present evidence that homeowners are happier than non-homeowners and it is homeownership that causes the difference in happiness. The data used is from seventeen Latin American countries obtained from the LatinBarometer surveys. The association between homeownership and happiness is measured by an ordered logit regression with a comprehensive set of socio-demographic control variable with errors clustered at year and country. Happiness and ownership are positively and statistically significantly related. Causality is determined through nonparametric impact me

Abstract:
This paper studies whether lending by foreign banks is affected by financial crises. The paper pairs a bank-level dataset of foreign ownership with information on banking crises and examines whether the credit supply of majority foreignowned banks that underwent home-country crises differs systematically from that of other foreign banks. The baseline results show that banks exposed to homecountry crises in 2007 and 2008 exhibit changes in lending patterns that are lower by between 13 and 42 percent than their non-crisis counterparts. This finding is robust to potential alternative explanations
