The results indicate that a common world factor is an important source of volatility for aggregates in most countries, providing evidence for a world business cycle. AbstractEquity and quality are the common goals to strive for in the Nordic education systems. Yet the mechanisms through which the separate education systems approach these goals have become more diverse. The chapter provides evidence in support of the different facets of teacher quality, such as self-efficacy, as well as teacher-students relations concerning their importance for teachers’ job satisfaction across the Nordic countries. Diversities, however, were also observed. The results from the TALIS 2013 model outlined two subgroups of the Nordic countries with similar mechanisms: the Norway-Sweden and the Denmark-Finland groups. No distinctive group was found in the TALIS 2018 results, producing more country-specific patterns, such as the importance of social utility value for Norway, adverse classroom composition in Sweden or teacher effective professional development positively impacting the personal and social utility values of teachers in Finland. These observed diversities and changing patterns may find their reasons in the gradually dissolved unity of the Nordic model by the different reform actions taken in recent years, such as in the example of Sweden, and in the long-term prerequisites for the teaching profession, where Finland is the country that stands out.

Abstract This chapter describes patterns, trends and determinants of public Euroscepticism in East Central Europe (ECE). It investigates whether public opinion on European integration in this region is connected to the contestation of both the immigration policies and the constitutional principles of the EU by the respective national governments. By applying longitudinal and comparative analyses based on European Election Studies from 2004 to 2019, it shows public support for European integration in ECE as more closely linked to instrumental performance assessments than in the EU average and as structured by country-specific rather than region-specific patterns. Cultural issues, like immigration and conceptions of democracy, which dominate ECE governmental politics, are only related to public Euroscepticism in some of those countries. Based on these results, the chapter suggests that the connection between the illiberal and anti-EU politics of ECE national governments and public Euroscepticism is loose and conditional upon the national context.

Abstract Customs worldwide are facing the challenge of supervising huge volumes of containerized trade arriving to their country with resources allowing them to inspect only a minimal fraction of it. Risk assessment procedures can support them on the selection of the containers to inspect. The Container-Trip information (CTI) is an important element for that evaluation, but is usually not available with the needed quality. Therefore, the quality of the computed CTI records from any data sources that may use (e.g. Container Status Messages), needs to be assessed. This paper presents a quality assessment framework that combines quantitative and qualitative domain specific metrics to evaluate the quality of large datasets of CTI records and to provide a more complete feedback on which aspects need to be revised to improve the quality of the output data. The experimental results show the robustness of the framework in highlighting the weak points on the datasets and in identifying efficiently cases of potentially wrong CTI records.

Abstract This chapter focuses on a range of practices that have been identified as climate-smart and appropriate for adoption at the family farm level in the context of Bangladesh, based on input from stakeholders and a review of the literature, as well as a review of ongoing agricultural interventions aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and climate resilience in the country. Sex-disaggregated data from two communities in Bangladesh are used to assess the gender differences in access to different sources and types of agricultural and climate information. The gender dimensions of awareness and adoption of these CSA practices are then explored in order to understand the extent to which information and knowledge gaps contribute to the adoption patterns of female and male farmers. Given that awareness is likely not the only determinant of adoption of CSA practices, a Heckman selectivity regression model was used to examine the correlates of adoption of specific CSA practices, taking into account the endogeneity of awareness. The chapter concludes by discussing the implications of the results and the need for increasing awareness and adoption of CSA practices by both women and men.

Abstract:
A traditional investment evaluation approach is generally closed with a financial lifecycle performances investigation based on multiple analysis of Discounted Cash Flows (DCF). The international literature is rich of studies about the economics of new Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), considering the classical accounts related to Construction, Operation & Maintenance, Fuel and Decommissioning. Financial analyses are important but the evaluation of such projects needs a multidimensional approach: besides economics, other technical, social and market factors have to be taken into account too. To meet the increasing energy demand and to shave the peak, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is currently planning to invest more on renewable energy (RE) seeking diversity of energy resources. Through the integration of demand side management measures and renewable energy distributed generation (DG) systems, the study outlined in this paper aims at investigating the potential of hybrid renewable energy systems in supplying energy demands for residential communities in an oil-rich country. The residential community considered in this study, located in the eastern region of KSA, has an annual

The economic growth of any country is determined by the natural resources it possesses and the fuel that it has. The rate of growth of any country is mostly directly proportional to the amount of fuel it possesses. Fossil fuels are important resources those have helped in the rapid industrialization of the world and thus to the increase in the quality of life. However, due to the threat of supply instabilities and the effect of green house gases caused by internal combustion engines have received more and more interests in the use of alternative fuel. The contribution of tourism to economic growth can be analyzed under the hypothesis of tourism-led growth. In this sense, this study aims at investigating the existence of the tourism-led growth hypothesis in the Turkic republics for the period 1995-2011. To this end, a bootstrap panel Granger causality analysis which was recently developed by Konya (2006) was employed. Results showed that, in a panel context, the tourism-led growth hypothesis is valid for the Turkic republics. However, the validity of this hypothesis is country specific.

In this paper we aim to disentangle how sectoral economic growth affects the growth of the middle class size using state-level data of Bolivia from 2000 to 2017, a country with limited data, breaking the three main economic activities into subsectors aiming for more specific results. By means of a Bayesian hierarchical longitudinal model for small samples, we find that the commerce and services sectors have the biggest impact, even though mining and agriculture also have a positive effect on the increase of the middle class in Bolivia. Our results also suggest that both formality and public so

This paper applies probit regression models to a nationally representative household survey dataset collected in 2016-2017 to analyze the relationships between various socio-demographic variables and adult Body Mass Index (BMI) in Suriname. Our results indicate that women, the elderly, and couples either married and/or living together are more likely to be obese or overweight. As expected, this is also true for individuals who have chronic illnesses. The analysis also finds that individuals who engage in a sport or in other forms of exercise, even if modest, have lower odds of being overweight

Heavy minerals (HMs) are minerals with a specific gravity greater than 2.9 g/cm3. They are commonly highly resistant to physical and chemical weathering, and therefore persist in sediments as lasting indicators of the (former) presence of the rocks they formed in. The presence/absence of certain HMs, their associations with other HMs, their concentration levels, and the geochemical patterns they form in maps or 3D models can be indicative of geological processes that contributed to their formation. Furthermore trace element and isotopic analyses of HMs have been used to vector to mineralisatio

Adaptive programming and management principles focused on learning, experimentation, and evidence-based decision making are gaining traction with donor agencies and implementing partners in international development. Adaptation calls for using learning to inform adjustments during project implementation. This requires information gathering methods that promote reflection, learning, and adaption, beyond reporting on pre-specified data. A focus on adaptation changes traditional thinking about program cycle. It both erases the boundaries between design, implementation, and evaluation and reframes

At the same time, total and core inflation rates have fallen and remain at low levels, suggesting that a significant element of the reactivation of Colombia’s economy has been related to recovery in potential GDP. This would support the technical staff’s diagnosis of weak aggregate demand and ample excess capacity. The most recently available data on 2020 growth suggests a contraction in economic activity of 6.8%, lowe
