Abstract:
Abstract Paku Atai Merah tubers with the Latin name Angiopteris ferox Coupel have been used by the Dayak people as empirical treatment and have anticancer and antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study was to find out more the movement of extracts and fractions of Paku Atai Merah tubers in reducing free radicals using the total antioxidant capacity (TAC), CUPRAC, and Iron chelating methods. In this study, the sample used was the ethanol extract (EE) of A.ferox Copel and then partitioned using n-hexane (FHP), ethyl acetate (FEAP), and aqueous-ethanol (FEP) solvents. The effectiveness of the sample in reducing free radicals with various antioxidant assay methods. The results obtained from this study indicate that the extract and fraction of Paku Atai Merah tubers have good effectiveness as an antioxidant agent. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) method showed that EAP had a total antioxidant capacity of 101.60 μM/mg QEAC compared to EE (44.62 μM/mg QEAC), FEAP (89.88 μM/mg QEAC), and FHP (81.21 μM/mg QEAC). In the CUPRAC method using gallic acid as a standard for comparison, the results obtained were EE (4.00 μM/mg GEAC), FHP (1.45 μM/mg GEAC), FEAP (8.66 μM/mg GEAC), and APA (8.72 μM/mg GEAC). The antioxidant activity using the chelating iron method in each sample of EE, HPA, EAP, and APA showed activity with IC50 values of 384 μg/mL, 387.41 μg/mL, 339.23 μg/mL, and 347.3 μg/mL. Based on the results obtained from this study, it can conclude that the extract and fraction of Paku Atai Merah tubers have an excellent antioxidant agent to develop as a food supplement.

Oubrahim, Imane. "Fiabilisation des approches théoriques pour la caractérisation des matériaux et la modélisation hygrothermique des enveloppes du bâtiment." Thesis, La Rochelle, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022LAROS021.

Full text
Abstract:
The renovation of old residential buildings (built before any thermal regulations) is an effective way to reduce the energy consumed by the building sector. However, owners’ reluctance to take action is delaying the objectives set for this sector in terms of energy savings. This hesitation stems from ignorance of the hygrothermal behavior of the materials used in the past for construction. In addition, the tools that integrate hygrothermal models seem unable to deal with complex situations such as those encountered during renovation. We aim to help make reliable the modeling of coupled heat and mass transfer by working on the hygrothermal coefficients involved to establish the physical models. Indeed, it was analyzed the impact of the phenomenon of hysteresis in the water sorption process on the coupled transfers of heat and mass under dynamic conditions. The effect of temperature on water sorption via complementary sorption heat and its impact was examined. The experimental determination of the vapor diffusion coefficient with the cup method was also studied to highlight the impact the traditional use of this experiment could have on the measurement of the concerned parameter. As a result of this analysis, a new method was proposed and tested to simultaneously identify the vapor diffusion coefficient and the air permeability. Finally, having determined all the coefficients characterizing the transfers, identification by an inverse method of the relative liquid permeability could be carried out. In this work, a methodology was proposed to determine this liquid water transfer coefficient. After analyzing the effect of each parameter separately, integration of the modified properties was performed to analyze the coupled impact of these parameters

Elhelou, Othman. "Magnetic Susceptibility Mapping of Fly Ash in Soil Samples Near a Coal-Burning Power Plant in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana." Thesis, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1592981.

Full text
Abstract:

Magnetic susceptibility is a property that can be used to effectively determine the compositional changes of mineral materials in soil. The objective of this study is to detect the presence of magnetic particles related to the migration of fly ash from a nearby coal-burning power plant over parts of Pointe Coupee Parish, LA. This is based on the idea that the fly ash that is released into the atmosphere during the coal burning process contains heavy metals and magnetic particles in the form of ferrospheres, which can be used to trace back to the source. Maps of the top and sub soil were generated to differentiate the magnetic susceptibility values of the heavy metals potentially attributed to the migration and settling of fly ash onto the surface from any pre-existing or naturally occurring heavy metals in the sub soil. A 60 km2 area in Pointe Coupee Parish was investigated in approximately 0.5 km2 subsets.

At each site, a minimum of 20 magnetic susceptibility measurements were obtained using a field probe along with discrete surface and subsurface samples collected for subsequent laboratory analysis. Samples of fly ash obtained directly from the source were also analyzed to verify the field and laboratory analysis. Contour maps representing the spatial distribution of the fly ash along with histograms of magnetic susceptibility values, reflective light microscope, and chemical analysis indicate a correlation between the proximity to the power plant and the predominant wind direction. Acquisition curves of the isothermal remanent magnetization demonstrate the presence of predominantly low coercivity minerals (magnetite) with a small amount of a high-coercivity phase. The microstructure of the magnetic fractions of the fly ash along with select top and sub soil samples were observed using a reflective light microscope for identifying and confirming the presence of ferrospheres associated with fly ash.

Abstract:
Ted griffin awoke with a start, but he wasn’t sure why. It was a warm night in August 1970, and all seemed calm and quiet. Water lapped against the boat’s hull as the lights of Coupeville flickered a mile and a half away. Yet something wasn’t right. The breathing of the whales behind the capture nets sounded clipped and nervous. “How long have they been blowing that way?” he asked the two men on watch. “Blowing? What way?” they answered. “All night I guess.” Straining his eyes in the dark, Griffin scanned the enormous pen, anchored just off the old Standard Oil dock. Everything seemed to be in order—except on the north side. The marker lights there were too far apart. He roused Goldsberry, and the partners jumped into a skiff to investigate. When they reached the floating lights, Griffin stared down at a loose cork line, puzzled. The net looked split. “Not split—cut!” yelled Goldsberry. “And in more than one place.” Griffin couldn’t believe it. Suddenly the orcas’ anxious breathing made sense. During the night, someone had slashed a section of the net. Large portions of loose mesh now drifted in the current, threatening to drown any whales nearby. Griffin and Goldsberry shouted for their crew, and in the following hours everyone worked feverishly in the dark—reattaching lines, mending mesh, anchoring nets. Had they reacted in time? Had the animals managed to avoid danger? Griffin needed to find out. Donning his wetsuit, he slipped over the cork line and into Penn Cove’s murky waters. At first, he was hopeful. All the whales seemed to be swimming near the surface. But a moment later, his eye caught a shimmer of white—perhaps a shark caught in the net? No, it was a tiny orca calf, no more than eight feet long. Ensnared in a floating portion of mesh, the little whale hung lifeless, head down. Other divers found two more, also calves. Initially, Griffin felt only nausea, but that soon gave way to rage. He wanted to lash out at those responsible.
