Abstract:

Due to the large difference in mode size and effective-index mismatch between the optical fiber and the waveguides on the photonic integrated circuits, it is a big challenge to efficiently couple light into thin semiconductor waveguides. In this paper, a taper plasmonic coupler is presented to couple fiber light into an Si waveguide. The taper plasmonic coupler structure is optimized, and the alignment tolerance of the gap, the lateral offset and the vertical offset between coupler and Si waveguide are studied. Numerical simulation shows that the coupler changes the single mode fiber light to multimode light at its input port section, while at its output port section, the coupler turns the multimode light back to a single mode light, and finally couples this light to Si waveguide. The maximum couple efficiency is 86.8% in [Formula: see text] effective coupler length.

Abstract:

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of emotion-oriented couple therapy and compare it with structural couple therapy on marital justice and relationship maintenance strategies in conflicting couples. Method: The present study was a quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test with a two-month control and follow-up group; The statistical population of the present study was 205 couples referring to counseling centers in Shiraz in the last six months of 1399. After screening with the Sanai Marital Conflict Questionnaire (2008), 60 couples who received more than 150 points from the cut-off point were selected by available means. They answered the Marital Justice Questionnaire and Relationship Strategies (Stafford, Dinton and Haas, 2000) and in the experimental group of emotion-focused couple therapy (10 couples), the experimental group of structural couple therapy (10 couples) and the control group (10 couples) were randomly replaced. Both experimental groups underwent Johnson (2004) emotion-focused couple therapy and Minochin (1974) structural couple therapy intervention for eight 90-minute sessions, and the control group did not receive any intervention. Data were analyzed using repeated measures mixed variance analysis. Results: The results showed that emotion-oriented couple therapy (F = 8.97 and P = 0.005) and structural couple therapy (F = 10.04 and P = 0.003) on increasing marital justice and emotion-oriented couple therapy (0.60). F = 59 and P = 0.001) and structural couple therapy ‌ (F = 19.29 and P = 0.001) are effective in maintaining relationship strategies in conflicting couples and this effect was stable in the follow-up phase; The results of post hoc test also showed that the difference between the two groups of emotion-oriented couple therapy and structural couple therapy in marital justice variables and strategies for maintaining the relationship is not significant. Conclusion: The results of the research suggest evidence that the intervention of emotion-oriented couple therapy and structural couple therapy is a suitable method for increasing marital justice and relationship maintenance strategies in spouses suffering from marital conflict

Abstract:

Feminist scholars have argued that husband gender traditionalism is one of the root causes of spousal violence against women. Using couple-level data from Hong Kong ( N = 871 couples), this article argues that a second mechanism—couple gender value mismatch—also explains husband-to-wife physical assault. Our findings show that a husband’s gender traditionalism is positively associated with husband-to-wife physical assault only when the husband is coupled with a wife who has non-traditional gender attitudes. Similarly, egalitarian gender attitudes in wives are positively associated with husband-to-wife physical assault only when a non-traditional wife is coupled with a traditional husband.

Abstract:

Objective: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of integrated behavioral couple therapy and schema-focused couple therapy on conflict resolution styles among conflicting couples in Shiraz. Methods: The research employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test, post-test, and one-month follow-up. The statistical population included all conflicting couples who visited the Fajr Counseling Center in Shiraz in 2022, from whom 45 couples were selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to three groups: integrated behavioral couple therapy, schema-focused couple therapy, and a control group. The Rahim Conflict Resolution Styles Questionnaire was used as the measurement tool. Experimental group one underwent a 16-session program of integrated behavioral couple therapy, and experimental group two a 13-session program of schema-focused couple therapy, while the control group was placed on a waiting list. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance. Findings: Results indicated that both interventions, integrated behavioral couple therapy and schema-focused couple therapy, were effective in addressing conflict resolution styles. There was a difference in the effectiveness of integrated behavioral couple therapy and schema-focused couple therapy on conflict resolution styles. Conclusion: Based on the findings, both treatments are effective for couples' conflict resolution styles, but the effectiveness of integrated behavioral couple therapy is reported to be more effective.

Abstract:

Galvanic corrosion behavior of Ti-1023 titanium alloy coupled to LY12 aluminum alloy was investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution. Particular attention was given to the effect of anodized coatings on corrosion behaviors of Ti-1023/LY12 galvanic couple. Galvanic test was conducted on the following couples: Ti-1023/LY12, Ti-1023/anodized LY12 and anodized Ti-1023/anodized LY12, respectively. Corrosion properties including open circuit potential (Eoc) of each material, galvanic corrosion potential (Eg) and galvanic corrosion current (Ig) of the couples were monitored. Corrosion morphology was observed by optical microscope (OM) and corrosion mechanisms were analyzed and discussed. It was showed that anodized coatings significantly decreased Eg and Īg of the couples and provide effective protection of the anode from suffering corrosion attack. Only slight localized corrosion was detected on anodized LY12 alloy in the two anodized couples and the LY12 in anodized Ti-1023/anodized LY12 couple was found to be least susceptible to galvanic corrosion. The LY12 alloy in the bare couple: Ti-1023/LY12, was found to be highly susceptible to galvanic corrosion and suffered severe uniform and localized corrosion attack

Abstract:

In this paper, the concepts of moments and couples in mechanics are examined from a fundamental perspective. Representing a couple by its moment vector is very useful in rigid body mechanics, where the states of internal stresses and deformation are not studied. This is because only the moment of couples appears in the governing equation of moment equilibrium. On the other hand, when considering the state of internal stresses and deformation in continuum mechanics, not only the moment of couples but also the line of action of their constituent parallel opposite forces must be specified. In defining a well-posed problem for a continuum, including the governing equations of moment equilibrium or motion, boundary conditions, and constitutive relations, only the moment of couples (e.g., body couples, couple tractions, couple stresses) appear without specifying the line of action of the constituent parallel forces. Nevertheless, the physical state of stress and deformation in the continuum must be unique and determinate. Therefore, this physical requirement imposes some restrictions on the form of body couples, couple tractions, and couple stresses. Here, the uniqueness of interactions in the continuum is used to establish that the continuum does not support a distribution of body couples or a distribution of surface twisting couple tractions with normal moments. Furthermore, the mechanism of action of the couple traction as a double layer of shear force tractions is established, along with the skew-symmetric character of the couple stress moment tensor.

Aim: This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of couple therapy based on object relationships and compare it with solution-oriented couple therapy on the emotional expression of spouses with marital conflict. Method: The present study was quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test with a two-month control and study groups and a statistical population of 192 couples referring to Hekmat and Saadat Counseling Centers in the first six months of 2019. After screening the subjects with King and Ammons (1990) Emotional Expression Questionnaire, 60 couples who got less than 40 scores from the cut-off point were selected by convenience sampling method and were randomly placed in the Object Relationship Couple Therapy study groups (10 couples), the solution-oriented couple therapy study group (10 couples) and control group (10 couples) . The first study group received eight 90-minute sessions of Donovan Object Relationship Couple Therapy Intervention (2013), and the second study group received the MacDonald Solution Axis Couple Therapy intervention for eight 90-minute sessions (2007), and the control group did not receive any intervention. The data were analyzed using repeated measures mixed variance analysis. Results: The findings showed the effect of object relationship couple therapy intervention on positive emotional expression (F = 114.76, P = 0.001), emotional intimacy expression (F = 228.85, P = 0.001) and negative emotional expression (F = 34.88, P = 0.001). And it showed the effect of solution-oriented couple therapy intervention on positive emotional expression (F = 49.96, P = 0.001), emotional intimacy expression (F = 116.30, P = 0.001), negative emotional expression (F = 16.46, P = 0.004) and the stability of this effect in the follow-up stage. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that object relations couple therapy intervention and solution-oriented couple therapy are appropriate methods to increase positive emotional expression and emotional intimacy expression and reduce negative emotional expression in spouses with marital conflict.

Abstract:

Knowing the determinants of couple adjustment is a challenge, both for predicting this adjustment and for helping couples in therapy in the best possible way. We based this study on the Person’s Social Value Theory (Beauvois, J.-L. [1976]. The topic of social conduct evaluation. Connexions, 19, 7-30) which postulates that two dimensions – social utility and social desirability – support self- and other- descriptions. This study aimed to evaluate the way the evaluation of own social value within couple and the evaluation of social value within couple of the partner influence the dyadic adjustment of the spouses. In addition, we took into account the duration of the couples and the emotional competences of the spouses (using the PEC). Participants were the spouses of 152 voluntary heterosexual couples who completed a booklet of questionnaires. The results showed that the two dimensions of person’s social value within couple influence partners' dyadic adjustment but in a different way for men and women and according to the duration of the couples’ relationship. Furthermore, the effect of social value within couple seems to cover partially the classic effect of emotional competences on couple experience and satisfaction. The discussion underlines the relevance and interest of using the social value within the couple in the study of conjugal relationships as well as in counselling couples.

Abstract:

Étudier « Le couple pénal : coupable / victime » c'est étudier une union et un duel. Un couple suppose la réunion de ses deux agents. Le tout est de savoir comment les protagonistes vont se réunir ? Dans quelles circonstances ? Et selon quel scénario ? Les questions se multiplient mais ce qui est certain c'est que ce n'est pas le hasard qui dicte toujours la victimisation. Victime latente, victime prédisposée, victime désignée, victime idéale, victime déterminée ou encore victime sociale, toutes sont convoquées par l'agresseur. Il reste cependant à comprendre le choix de la victime. Celle-ci peut-être porteuse d'un trait caractéristique innée ou encore d'une étiquette imposée par son parcours social. Dans les deux cas la victime apparait comme une cible désignée, désignée par le groupe auquel elle appartient à un groupe vulnérable, par la nature même de ses sujets. Dans d'autres cas, la victime est initialement non déterminée. C'est elle qui attire le coupable vers elle, créant ainsi une certaine interaction entre les deux agents. Et c'est d'ailleurs, cette interaction qui concrétise au mieux la définition du couple pénal. En effet, un couple est amené à échanger. Lors de cet échange apparait nettement le rôle de la victime. Victime et coupable représentent une dualité difficile à dissocier. L'interaction entre eux peut trouver sa base dans une relation entre les deux. Cette relation favorise la compréhension du pourquoi de certaines infractions. Et c'est pour cette raison qu'elle a été retenue par le législateur pour dicter des infractions spéciales avec une qualification juridique indépendante en raison de cette relation (infanticide, inceste, parricide, harcèlement). L'interaction entre les deux protagonistes peut trouver sa base dans le comportement de la victime face au coupable. Dans ce sens, la victime n'est pas tout simplement un sujet prédisposé, elle va s'avérer réactive, collaboratrice même. Parler de la collaboration, de la culpabilité, de la responsabilité de la victime peut prêter à équivoque. Comment peut-on accepter de tels adjectifs qualificatifs pour un agent censé être la partie qui subit le mal ? Cette terminologie parait choquante mais son apport ne fait pas le moindre doute. C'est la pièce maitresse même de toute la discipline de la victimologie. Le tout est donc de la comprendre dans son vrai contexte pour éviter tout détournement. Face à ce qui vient d'être relevé, on retient un coupable qui se présente comme l'agent actif qui commet le tort et une victime qui s'avère être l'agent passif qui le subit. Le rythme entre les deux sujets s'accélère jusqu'à ce que le mal soit fait. L'infraction étant consommée, le rythme entre les deux diminue. L'existence du couple pénal continue cependant à s'inscrire dans le temps. Le coupable découvert ne jouit plus de son rôle actif. Les rôles s'inversent alors. Après que le mal soit fait, les regards se tournent vers la victime. Que va-t-elle faire ? La victime n'est plus uniquement la personne qui subit, mais la personne qui se venge. Au fond, la victimisation est loin d'être une phase facile dans la vie de la victime. C'est une expérience effrayante et déstabilisante. Elle n'est pas un événement fugace. C'est un processus qui s'étend dans le temps. D'abord, la victime doit faire un pas en avant et apprendre à dénoncer. Puis sa victimisation ne doit pas être une condamnation à perpétuité. Elle doit réclamer ses droits. Cette revendication expresse des victimes est une revendication de dignité, de considération et d'honneur. Le procès pénal apparaît à ses yeux comme producteur de vérité. C'est le moment tant attendu pour exprimer sa souffrance et sa douleur. C'est par excellence une scène de justice pour apaiser la victime. C'est aussi une scène de conciliation permettant de "négocier" la justice afin d'apaiser le couple pénal. On entre alors dans la démarche de la justice restauratrice permettant le coupable de prendre conscience de la répercussion de son acte To study " The penal couple: culprit / victim " it is to study an union and a duel. This one can be carrier innate characteristic or still a label imposed by its social course. In both cases the victim appears as a designated target , designated by the group to who she belongs to a vulnerable group, by the nature of her subjects. In other cases, the victim is initially not determined. It is her who attracts the culprit towards her, so creating a certain interaction between both agents. And it is moreover, this interaction which concretizes at best the definition of the penal couple. Indeed, a couple is brought to exchange. During this exchange appears clearly the role of the victim. Victim and culprit represent a duality difficult to separate. The interaction between them can find its basis in a relation between both. This relation favors the understanding of why of certain offenses. And this is why it was held by the legislator to dictate special offenses with an independent legal qualification because of this relation (infanticide, incest, parricide, harassment). The interaction between both protagonists can find its basis in the behavior of the victim in front of culprit. In this sense, the victim is not simply an amenable subject, she is going to turn out reactive, collaborator. To talk about the collaboration, about the guilt, about the responsibility of the victim can be ambiguous. How can we accept such adjectives for a supposed agent to be the part which undergoes the evil? This terminology countered shocking but its contribution does not make the slightest doubt. It is the major component of all the discipline of the victimology. Thus the whole is to understand her in its real context to avoid any diversion. In the face of what has been raised, we hold a culprit who appears as the active agent who commits the wrong and the victim who turns out to be the passive agent who undergoes him. The rhythm between both subjects accelerates until the evil is made. The offense being consumed, the rhythm between both decreases. The existence of the penal couple keeps however joining in time. The guilty overdraft does not enjoy anymore its active role. The roles are then reversed. After the evil is made, the looks turn to the victim. What is she going to make? The victim is more only the person who undergoes, but the person who takes revenge. At the bottom, the victimization is far from being an easy phase in the life of the victim. It is a terrible and destabilizing experience. It is not a fleeting event. It is the process which extends in time. At first, the victim has to make a step forward and learn to denounce. Then his victimization should not be a life sentence. She has to demand her rights. This express claiming of the victims is a claiming of dignity, consideration and honor. The penal trial appears for him as producer of the truth. It is the long-awaited moment to express its suffering and its pain. It is archetypal a scene of justice to calm the victim. It is also a scene of conciliation allowing "to negotiate" the justice to calm the penal couple. We enter then the approach of the justice restaurant owner allowing the culprit to become aware of the repercussion of its act in the life of the victim and to try to repair the caused evil. Pour passer de l'état amoureux à l'engagement amoureux, de la passion à un couple psychique, les partenaires vont constituer un lien spécifique, le lien conjugal. Ce lien crée un écart entre les conjoints, écart nécessaire pour être en lien et exister comme individus. Plus le désir fusionnel est à l'œuvre, plus l'écart pend une forme concrète, absence de relations sexuelles, somatisations, violence, tiers réel. Le symptôme de couple, création du couple, vient en lieu et place de l'intériorisation du tiers. Le lien organise des collusions défensives, points de fixations en écho de l'histoire prégénital des conjoints. Le retour du refoulé débouche sur la constitution de symptômes et sur la crise. Le travail psychique accompli pour dépasser les crises élabore les collusions. Les conjoints l'un par l'autre, l'un avec l'autre dénouent peu à peu ce qui s'y était condensé. Cette élaboration ouvre soit sur la dissolution du lien soit sur son renforcement, elle permet à chaque conjoint l'intégration progressive d'éléments en attente de symbolisation organisés jusque là dans la collusion. Under such circumstances, the psychical work provided by the couple may be seen as organising or reorganising its psyche, and enabling the partners to work over again the original mourning and that of the oedipien parents. In order to achieve this work, the setting and the couple as supporting group agencies must be reliable and the link must be objectal and libidinal enough. Dual therapy offers consulting ailing partners to form such a supporting group agency. It enables the link to be created afresh, the workin out of the differentiation inside the dyad and the projections of the internal object upon the real objects

Abstract:

This thesis describes a program of research which aimed to identify the extent to which couple and stepfamily variables were associated with couple relationship adjustment and stability in stepfamily couples. Two studies were conducted. Study 1 consisted of 63 stepfamily couples who were in a committed relationship (married or cohabiting) and who had earlier taken part in an intervention program. It was hypothesised that positive couple relationship outcomes could be predicted by low couple aggression, high couple negativity, low couple withdrawal, high parenting disagreement, and high dysfunctional parenting over a 5-year period. The results did not support the hypotheses possibly due to low power in the design. In Study 2, 122 stepfamily couples who been living together (married or cohabiting) as a stepfamily were assessed on couple and stepfamily factors, and these were tested for their association with couple relationship adjustment and stability, using both self-report questionnaires and interview data. As predicted, stepfamily factors accounted for variance in couple stability above that accounted for by couple factors. Furthermore, stepfamily factors were associated with couple stability independent of couple adjustment. The influence of stepfamily couple relationship adjustment and stability seem distinctive from first-marriage couples. It was concluded that stepfamily relationship education programs for stepfamilies should address the unique needs of stepfamilies such as parenting education for inexperienced stepparents, the development of positive stepparent-stepchild relationships, and the building of stepfamily cohesion.

Abstract:

Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT), an empirically supported and evidence-based third-wave behavioral approach for treatment of couples, is examined in this multiple case study. Specifically, the qualitative experiences of therapists using IBCT in their work with intercultural couples are examined through each therapist’s typed responses to open-ended questions. Each participating therapist in this study contributes by describing one case in which IBCT was used to help the couple navigate cultural differences as part of treatment. This study describes the various stressors faced by intercultural couples, therapists’ formulations of cultural differences, change processes and change mechanisms during treatment, and similarities and differences across therapists’ reports. The study concludes with participating therapists’ recommendations for treatment of intercultural couples in general, and recommendations for utilizing IBCT with intercultural couples. Lastly, implications for future research are provided.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to explore transgender couples? beliefs and experiences of couple and family therapy. This study utilized a secondary data set of interviews from seven transgender participants and three partners. A queer feminist framework guided this study. The results of this project indicate that participants believe couple and family therapy to be relevant to their lives and therapeutic needs of transgender couples and their families. However, participants expressed unfamiliarity with the field and uncertainty that couple and family therapists are equipped to provide affirmative care.

L'importance des interactions professionnelles dans la construction des identités professionnelles a été abondamment analysée par la sociologie du travail, qui leur accorde une prééminence épistémologique, occultant ainsi l'impact des dynamiques familiales et du genre. La recherche, menée à partir d'un corpus de récits de vie croisés de couples d'employé(e)s, ouvriers et professions intermédiaires, s'est attachée à cerner l'incidence de la vie conjugale et du genre sur l'identité et la trajectoire professionnelle de chaque conjoint. Une première partie analyse les modalités, délibérés ou implicites, selon lesquelles s'effectue la mise en commun du vécu professionnel au sein des couples. L'intimité, en particulier, suscite un mode d'interaction spécifique qui modèle l'identité et la trajectoire de chacun. La démarche théorique et méthodologique adoptée en deuxième partie s'attache à élaborer un modèle d'analyse du changement identitaire, intégrant la diversité des appartenances tant biographiques que simultanées. Enfin, la troisième partie synthétise le rôle du conjoint dans le processus de changement identitaire. A cet égard, deux grands modèles se dégagent. Dans une première configuration, l'espace professionnel joue un rôle moteur. Nous montrerons que les trajectoires professionnelles,même celles qui semblent les plus autonomes, nécessitent une négociation conjugale qui les valide voire les infléchit. Dans une deuxième configuration, l'interaction conjugale en pesant sur les ressources subjectives initie le changement identitaire. Le conjoint joue alors un rôle actif de soutien, allant de la simple confiance au management actif de la carrière, en passant par la valorisation des capacités du partenaire. Cependant, cette nouvelle définition de soi-même doit être reconnue au sein de l'espace professionnel pour devenir réalité. Le rôle spécifique joué par la relation conjugale, en terme de validation ou d'initiation du changement identitaire, la rend complémentaire des interactions professionnelles. Cette complémentarité permet de penser la double appartenance et l'enjeu que constitue la reconnaissance identitaire au sein de chacune des deux sphères professionnelles et familiales lors des phases de changement.

La consécration sur la scène juridique, en 1999, des modes de conjugalité alternatifs au mariage - le concubinage et le PACS-, a contribué à renouveler l'appréhension de la notion de couple, placée au coeur des préoccupations législatives. De plus en plus envisagé comme une notion unitaire, le couple est désormais compris dans une acception qui transcende les modes de conjugalité, au point que la réalité d'un droit commun du couple encouragé par le législateur est aujourd'hui tangible. Dans cette logique, on observe un rapprochement des processus de rupture résultant de l'extension de certaines règles protectrices du divorce aux ruptures du PACS et du concubinage. Dès lors, le développement d'un droit commun de la rupture du couple au détriment de la spécificité du divorce est-il inéluctable ? ou à l'inverse, la rupture est-elle encore le symbole des différences fondamentales entre les modes de conjugalité, en révélant ce qui est l'essence irréductible de chacun d'eux -et ceci, dans un contexte du droit de la conjugalité profondément renouvelé par l'appréhension nouvelle du mariage en tant qu'union ouverte aux personnes de même sexe ?Telle est l'alternative pour le législateur à qui il incombe de donner une nouvelle cohérence au droit de la conjugalité The arising on the legal scene in 1999 of various types of union as alternatives to marriage (cohabitation and french civil partnership -PACS-) contributed to reconsider the very notion of couple as the core of legislative priorities. More and more understood as a unitarian concept, the couple is now included in an understanding that goes beyond the type of union, to the point where a common law of couples becomes a reality, promoted by the legislator. Doing so, the legal ways of ending a cohabition or a PACS are now obviously converging with the way of ending a marriage, thanks to the extension of protective laws that initially concerned only married couples.From here, must we consider inevitable the development of a common law of ending a couple, at the expense of the specificity of divorce ? Or, at the opposite, is the ending of a couple still the best representation of the fundamental differences between unions, revealing their very nature - moreover now that the laws of conjugality have been deeply reconsidered through the legalization of same sex marriage ?Such is the alternative for the legislator, who has now to give a brand new coherence to the laws of conjugality

Abstract Duplicate galvanic couples with a 1:1 area ratio were constructed from all combinations of the following materials: type 304L stainless steel, 90/10 copper-nickel, 70/30 copper-nickel, nickel-aluminum bronze, silicon bronze, and copper. In addition, duplicate panels of each of these materials were cathodically protected with either anode grade zinc or iron. Exposures were conducted in natural seawater flowing at 5-ft/s for 375 days while monitoring galvanic current and couple potential. Major changes in galvanic currents tended to occur within the first 120-days exposure, although drift to lower currents was observed over the entire test period. Couple potentials were highly variable over the entire exposure period, but major potential drift tended to occur within the first 120 days. The highest current densities for couples not including zinc or iron were for all of the 304L couples, particularly those with silicon bronze and copper, nickel-aluminum bronze coupled to silicon bronze or copper, and 70/30 copper-nickel coupled to silicon bronze or copper. Current densities for all other couples were below 1 mA/ft2, and should result in low total currents for reasonable anode/cathode area ratios.

Abstract:

The two aspect ratios 1.0 and 0.5 analysed comparatively to perform a stability study of a 120° partial arc journal bearing have lubricated with a fluid of couple stresses. Reynold’s equation in modified form is obtained for couple stresses and coupled with elasticity equation to predict the impact of deformation in bearing liner on stability characteristics of journal bearing to know its performance. The results quoted here are in terms of attitude angle, somerfeld number, critical mass, whirl frequency and threshold speed. The conclusion made shows that the bearings with high aspect ratio (1.0) are more stable than aspect ratio 0.5 for the fluid of couple stresses and its stability is improved by the use of fluid with couple stresses. Threshold speed is reduced with an increase in the factor of liner deformation and shows that the region of stability is reduced on increasing deformation of bearing liner.

When workplaces and schools closed in March 2020 to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, family life across Canada was profoundly affected. These unique circumstances increased pressure on couples, many of whom found themselves together 24/7 – sometimes with children – while quickly adapting their homes into shared workspaces and/or learning environments. In addition to ongoing uncertainties and anxieties related to the coronavirus itself, these sudden and major adjustments in work and family life led some to wonder whether the impacts of COVID-19 might lead to increased rates of separation and divorce. Millions of families stayed at home for weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For many parents of school-aged children, this meant homeschooling their children while also working from home, with everyone sharing resources (e.g. desk space, Internet bandwidth). For others, it meant facing unemployment and/or reduced income while spending far more time than usual with their partner or spouse. Among heterosexual couples, inequality in gender roles within the household could also be magnified in a context where they are spending more time together: conflicts over the distribution of paid and unpaid work could thereby arise, particularly for those homeschooling children while continuing paid work from home.

Lorsque les milieux professionnels et les écoles ont fermé en mars 2020 en vue d’atténuer la propagation de la COVID-19, la vie de famille dans l’ensemble du Canada a été grandement bouleversée. Ce contexte particulier a intensifié la tension au sein des couples, alors que bon nombre d’entre eux se sont retrouvés confinés ensemble 24 h/24, 7 j/7 – parfois avec des enfants – tout en devant rapidement adapter leur domicile afin de partager des espaces de travail et/ou d’apprentissage. Compte tenu de ces ajustements à la fois importants et imprévus par rapport à la vie professionnelle et familiale, en plus des incertitudes et des craintes persistantes liées au coronavirus lui-même, certains se sont demandé si les effets de la COVID-19 pourraient entraîner une hausse des taux de séparation et de divorce. Des millions de familles ont dû demeurer à la maison pendant plusieurs semaines en raison de la pandémie de COVID-19. Or, pour de nombreux parents d’enfants d’âge scolaire, cela impliquait qu’ils scolarisent eux-mêmes leurs enfants tout en continuant de travailler à domicile, en plus de devoir partager les ressources (p. ex. : bureaux de travail, bande passante Internet). D’autres ont pour leur part dû faire face au chômage ou à une baisse de revenus, et se sont retrouvés à passer beaucoup plus de temps que d’habitude avec leur partenaire ou leur conjoint. Chez les couples hétérosexuels, l’inégalité des rôles entre les sexes au sein du ménage a également pu être amplifiée dans un contexte où ils passent plus de temps ensemble : des conflits sur la répartition du travail rémunéré et non rémunéré ont pu ainsi survenir, et ce, particulièrement chez ceux qui doivent scolariser leurs enfants à la maison tout en continuant à travailler à domicile.

Abstract:

We measure the extent of discrimination against same-sex couples by schools in Colombia using a matched-pair correspondence study. We send requests to visit private schools from several couples of different sexual orientation as conveyed by the names of the parents. We track the response rate from schools, the time to reply and the quality of the reply. We find that schools are 12 percentage points (22.3%) less likely to respond to a request sent by a homosexual couple with respect to one sent by a heterosexual one. When no information about sexual orientation is provided, the response rate decreases by 20pp. (37%) versus an explicitly heterosexual couple. Conditional on replying, we find no difference in the time schools take to respond or the quality of the reply across couples, a result plausibly driven by selection into responding. Our findings suggest that, despite a strong legal framework that protects LGBTQ rights, discrimination against same-sex couples is pervasive and can have intergenerational consequences.
