Abstract:
Objective: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of couple therapy based on acceptance and commitment on love schemas and emotional schemas in couples with extramarital relationships with a two-month follow-up period. Methods and Materials: This research used a single-case quasi-experimental design of multiple baseline types. The statistical population of this research included all couples with experience in extramarital relations who were referred to the family courts and prevention unit of the Dezful city welfare department in 2021-22. After the diagnostic interview and specifying the couples who met the entry criteria, four couples (8 persons) were selected based on purposive sampling. The protocol of the couples therapy method was implemented in the form of three baseline stages and, eight 90-minute sessions and a two-month follow-up. The participants responded to Yaarmohammadi Vasel et al.'s Love Schema Questionnaire (2021) and Leahy Emotional Schema Scale (LESS). The data were analyzed using a visual drawing method, reliable change index (RCI), and recovery percentage formula. Findings: The results showed that couple therapy based on acceptance and commitment increased adaptive emotional schemas and decreased maladaptive emotional schemas of couples with extramarital relationships (p<0.05). Couple therapy based on acceptance and commitment significantly affects the secure love schema, unstable love schema, clingy love schema, avoidant love schema, and non-serious love schema (p<0.05) and its results continued until the follow-up stage. Conclusion: Therefore, couple therapy based on acceptance and commitment as a stable intervention to increase love and emotional schemas can be used in health and treatment centers for couples with extramarital relationships.

Abstract:
Objective: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of Aceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and schema therapy on forgiveness and fear of intimacy in conflicting couples. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pre-test, post-test design with a control group. The participants were selected from the conflicting couples who were referred to counseling and psychological service centers in districts 1 and 5 of Tehran in 2019. Of the couples who scored high on the Fear-of-Intimacy Scale and obtained a low score on the Interpersonal Forgiveness Inventory, 30 couples (60 people) were selected using convenience sampling and randomly assigned to the schema therapy group (10 couples), the ACT group (10 couples), and the control group (10 couples). Then, the participants in each of the intervention groups attended eight 90-minute therapy sessions based on ACT and Schema therapy techniques. After the interventions, the participants in the three groups completed the questionnaires again and were followed up after three months. Results: The results showed that both ACT and schema therapy had a significant effect on fear of intimacy and forgiveness. Upon controlling the pre-test score, significant differences were found between the two ACT and schema therapy groups in terms of reconnection and revenge control (P<0.01), but the two groups were not significantly different in terms of resentment control, realistic perceptions, and fear of intimacy and schema couple therapy was more effective than ACT in controlling conflicting couples’ revenge and improving reconnection and this greater effectiveness was still retained in the follow-up phase. Conclusion: ACT and schema-based couple therapies can be used by psychologists and counselors as effective approaches to increase forgiveness and reduce fear of intimacy in couples. However, schema couple therapy is more effective than ACT in controlling negative emotions and treating them in couples.

Abstract:
Cognitive behaviour therapists working in the field over the last 10 years will have witnessed a shift to more schema focused forms of therapy. While these approaches have been introduced to treat people with personality disorders, they have also had a strong influence on the treatment given to people suffering from Axis I disorders. Indeed, it is my impression that many therapists are now of the opinion that they are not doing proper cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) unless they have undertaken a detailed history of a patient's early childhood and, along the way, unearthed a couple of core beliefs. This paper outlines some of the pitfalls concerning the shift of emphasis towards schema focused techniques. While it is acknowledged that schema work is a development of “traditional” CBT, it is proposed that schema therapy is being employed without adequate assessment of its appropriateness, especially when used in primary care settings with people with no prior history of psychiatric problems. This paper provides some anecdotal details about therapists' difficulties in using schema techniques. These examples stress the need for good supervision, highlighting the responsibility of therapists to ensure that the patient receives the most appropriate form of therapy. This work recognizes the importance of schema focused approaches, but suggests that they are being used too pervasively, and too often by people with neither sufficient training, nor adequate grounding, in the empirically validated “traditional” CBT approaches.

Abstract:
Objective: The present study was conducted with the aim of comparing the effectiveness of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy with Schema Therapy on communication skills in women affected by marital infidelity. Materials and Methods: The research method was quasi-experimental with a pre-test, post-test and follow-up plan with a control group. The statistical population of this research was all the women involved with the issue of marital infidelity of their husbands who referred to the counseling centers of Tehran in 2022, who declared their readiness to attend the treatment plan at the call of the researcher in order to solve their problem. In this case, 45 subjects were selected by purposeful sampling and randomly replaced in three equal groups of 15 people (two experimental groups and one control group). To collect data, Queendom communication skills questionnaire (2004) was used. SPSS software and multivariate covariance analysis tests were used for data analysis. Findings: The results showed that both the intervention of Schema Therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy have created a significant difference in the post-test and follow-up phase in the variable of communication skills in women affected by marital infidelity compared to the control group (P<0.01). Also, the results showed that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy had a greater effect on communication skills in women affected by marital infidelity than Schema Therapy (P>0.05). Specifically, the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy experimental group showed an increase of 4.85 points at the post-test stage and 5.05 points at the follow-up stage in communication skills compared to the Schema Therapy experimental group. Conclusion: Considering the findings of the current research, it can be recommended to mental health professionals and individuals active in couple therapy to enhance the mental health of women affected by marital infidelity by designing and applying appropriate methods inspired by Schema Therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.

Abstract:
Aim: The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of emotion- focused therapy and mindfulness therapy based on the activation of spiritual-Islamic schemas on marital adjustment. Method: The current research is part of the semi-experimental designs with pre-test-post-test-follow-up of three groups. The statistical population of the current research is all couples who have a child with a mental, physical-motor or mental and physical-motor disability who is covered by the welfare organization and has a file in the Positive Life Welfare Service Center of Khansar.. In order to form three groups using the purposeful sampling method (taking into account the entry and exit criteria), first 46 people were selected and then 16 people (8 couples) were randomly selected in the first test group and 16 people in the second test group. And 16 people were grouped in the control group. The three groups that were formed in this way were similar and the dependent variables were measured for both experimental groups at the same time. Also, the follow-up phase was performed three months after the post-test on all three groups. The research tools included Spanier's Marital Adjustment Scale (1976). The data of the research were analyzed using repeated measure analysis of variance. Results: The results of data analysis showed that between the two groups, mindfulness therapy based on the activation of spiritual-Islamic schemas and emotion-oriented therapy is significant at the 0.05 level for the marital satisfaction component (P<0.05); As a result, there is a significant difference between the average scores of the pre-test, post-test and follow-up of the marital satisfaction component in the two groups, and emotion-oriented therapy had a greater effect on marital adjustment (P=0.05). Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, mindfulness based on the activation of spiritual-Islamic schemas and emotion-oriented therapy leads to the improvement of marital solidarity, marital agreement, expression of affection and marital satisfaction in couples with children, and it represents the horizon. Is new in couple therapy interventions and can be used as an effective intervention method; Therefore, it seems that this intervention is also useful for couples with disabled children.

Abstract:
Aim: Marriage can be stable or unstable according to various factors, including interpersonal problems of the couple. The aim of the research was to determine the effectiveness of the premarital counseling package training based on the integration of schema therapy and imagotherapy approaches on the treatment of interpersonal problems of couples on the verge of marriage. Research method: Method: The research was a semi-experimental method with a pre-test, post-test and two-month follow-up plan with the control group. The statistical population consisted of boys and girls on the verge of marriage who referred to Rah Farda Counseling Center in Tehran in 2021, and twenty couples were selected by random sampling. Then they were randomly divided into two groups consisting of 10 test pairs and 10 control pairs. For both groups, pre-test, post-test and follow-up were performed. Interpersonal problems questionnaire (Hurwitz et al., 1989) was used. The counseling package was conducted in eight ninety-minute sessions twice a week only for the experimental group. Data analysis was done using repeated measures analysis of variance and LSD post hoc test in SPSS version 22 software. The significance level of statistical tests was considered 0.05. Results: The results showed that the main effect of time (p = 0.006), the main effect of group (p = 0.001) and the interaction effect of time and group (p = 0.001) were significant on the variable of interpersonal problems. In the experimental group, the average pre-test scores of the couple's interpersonal problems variable were significantly higher than the average scores of the post-test (p = 0.015) and follow-up (p = 0.024). In addition, there was no significant difference between the mean scores of the mentioned variable between the post-test and follow-up stages (p = 0.228), which means that the effect of the intervention of trainings is lasting over time in the experimental group. Conclusion: Based on the results, pre-marriage counseling package based on the integration of approaches and concepts of schema therapy and imagotherapy is effective in reducing the interpersonal problems of couples on the eve of marriage.

Abstract:
Aim: This study was performed to compare the effectiveness of schema therapy (ST) and transactional analysis (TA) in marital conflict of couples seeking a divorce. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design with a control group and a two-month follow-up. The statistical population included all married people with marital conflict in Rasht in the second half of 2018 who referred to counseling centers, dispute settlement councils, and family courts, from which 40 people were selected by convenient sampling and randomly assigned to the ST experimental group (n = 15), the TA experimental group (n = 15), and the control group (n =15). The ST experimental group received the training package intervention of Yang et al. (2003), and the TA experimental group received the therapy package intervention of Stewart (2016) for twelve one-hour sessions. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA. Results: The results indicated that ST and TA affected marital conflict (F = 125.23, P = 0.001) and that this effect was stable during the follow-up phase. The results of the Scheffé posthoc test suggested that there was a significant difference between TA and ST in terms of effectiveness in reducing marital conflicts (P = 0.05). Accordingly, TA had a greater effect on the reduction of marital conflicts among the participants. Conclusion: According to the results, trained therapists are recommended to teach psychological treatment programs such as schema-oriented couple therapy and TA in the form of weekly programs to improve the level of marital satisfaction of couples.

Abstract:
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) on marital commitment, love schemas, and emotional schemas in couples with extramarital affairs. Methods: This research employed a semi-experimental single-case design with a multiple baseline method. The statistical population of this study included all couples with experience of extramarital affairs who referred to family courts and the prevention unit of the welfare organization in Dezful city in the year 2022. A total of 4 couples (8 individuals) were selected through purposeful sampling. The EFCT process was conducted in three baseline stages, across 8 sessions of 90 minutes each, with a two-month follow-up. Participants responded to the Marital Commitment Questionnaire by Adams and Jones (1997), the Love Schema Questionnaire by Yarahmadi-Vaseli et al. (2020), and the Leahy Emotional Schema Scale (LES) (2002). Data were analyzed using visual inspection, reliable change index, and percentage improvement formula. Findings: The results indicated that EFCT led to an increase in marital commitment in couples with extramarital affairs (P<0.05), and the effects persisted until the follow-up stage. Additionally, the results showed that EFCT resulted in an increase in adaptive emotional schemas and a decrease in maladaptive emotional schemas in these couples (P<0.05). EFCT had a significant impact on secure love schema, unstable love schema, clingy love schema, avoidant love schema, and unserious love schema (P<0.05), with effects lasting until the follow-up stage. Furthermore, the results indicated that EFCT did not have a significant impact on reducing unserious love schema and uninterested love schema (P>0.05). Conclusion: Therefore, EFCT can be utilized as a sustainable intervention to enhance marital commitment, love schemas, and emotional schemas in healthcare and therapeutic centers for couples with extramarital affairs.

Abstract:
Objective: The present study aimed to compare couples therapy with a schema therapy approach and the Gottman method in improving marital conflicts in women on the verge of divorce. Methodology: This research was a quasi-experimental study. The statistical population consisted of all women on the verge of divorce in the city of Hamadan. From this population, based on the research method, a sample of 60 women with marital conflicts was selected and divided into four groups (one experimental and one control group for schema therapy, and one experimental and one control group for couples therapy using the Gottman method) through random assignment. The intervention program was then implemented, followed by a post-test. The research instruments included the schema therapy training program by Young, Glosko, and Wishar (1990), the Gottman couples therapy program based on the sound relationship house theory by Gottman and Gottman (2017), and the Marital Conflicts Questionnaire by Sanaei Zakir and Barati (2008). Data were analyzed using multivariate and univariate covariance analysis with SPSS software version 26. Findings: The findings indicated no significant difference between the two groups of couples therapy with the schema therapy approach and the Gottman method in improving marital conflicts. Couples therapy with the schema therapy approach had a significant effect on improving marital conflicts. Couples therapy using the Gottman method also had a significant effect on improving marital conflicts in women on the verge of divorce. Conclusion: The findings suggest that both couples therapy with the schema therapy approach and the Gottman method are effective in improving marital conflicts in women on the verge of divorce, with no significant difference between them.

Abstract:
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of schema therapy on reducing sexual aversion and enhancing sexual self-efficacy. Methods: The research utilized a semi-experimental design with pre-test, post-test, and follow-up assessments. Thirty couples experiencing sexual aversion and low sexual self-efficacy were selected from counseling centers in Karaj, Iran. Participants were randomly assigned to either a schema therapy group (n=15) or a control group (n=15). The schema therapy group received 8 to 10 sessions of intervention. Two standardized questionnaires, the Sexual Self-Efficacy Questionnaire and the Sexual Aversion Inventory, were used to measure outcomes. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), and follow-up tests were conducted to assess the stability of the intervention effects over time. Findings: The findings revealed that schema therapy significantly improved sexual self-efficacy and reduced sexual aversion in the experimental group compared to the control group (p < .01). These improvements were sustained during the follow-up phase, with no significant decline in outcomes. The post-test and follow-up results demonstrated that schema therapy had a lasting positive impact on participants’ sexual health. The control group, in contrast, showed no significant changes across the measurement phases. Conclusion: Schema therapy was found to be an effective intervention for reducing sexual aversion and increasing sexual self-efficacy. The sustained improvements suggest that schema therapy offers long-term benefits for individuals struggling with these sexual issues. This study highlights the importance of addressing early maladaptive schemas to improve sexual health and relationship satisfaction.

Abstract:
Women face more negative health outcomes than men due to relationship distress, but little is understood about why heterosexual women do or do not seek couple therapy. The present study addressed this gap by using the theory of planned behavior within an alternative structural equation modeling framework to examine the links between relational schemas and intention to seek couple therapy in a sample of heterosexual women ( N = 302) who were unhappy in their romantic relationships. Women who suppressed their own needs (i.e., self-silence), defined themselves in the context of important relationships (i.e., relational-interdependent self-construal), valued not asking for help (i.e., self-reliance), and preferred not to disclose their feelings (i.e., emotional control) were both less and more likely to intend to seek couple therapy. Results illustrate how relational schemas create conflicting messages for women about seeking couple therapy.

Background: Resilience, as a variable affecting couples’ relationships and resolving conflicts between them, plays an essential role in family psychology and family therapy. Materials & Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test, post-test, a control group, and a 45-day follow-up design. The statistical population included all couples with low marital adjustment who were referred to the psychological counseling centers of Ahvaz City, Iran, in 2020. Thirty participants were selected using the convenience sampling method and randomly divided into the experimental and control groups (n=15 couples/group). The necessary data were collected using the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), the Cognitive Avoidance Questionnaire (CAQ), and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). The schema therapy program was performed for the experimental group in eight 90-minute weekly sessions; however, the control group received no intervention. The follow-up phase was performed after 45 days. Repeated-Measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used in SPSS to analyze the obtained data. Results: Schema therapy effectively decreased anxiety and cognitive avoidance and increased resilience among couples in the experimental group (P<0.001). The Mean±SD post-test score of resilience was measured as 50.87±4.64 in the experimental group, which increased, compared to the post-test scores (43.33±5.71) in the control group. Conclusion: Schema therapy decreased anxiety, cognitive avoidance, and significantly increased resilience in the examined couples. Schema therapy can be used to improve resilience in couples presenting marital conflicts.

Abstract:
Objective: Differences between couples and their continuous interaction can create multiple grounds for conflict, which may lead to severe negative outcomes such as stress, depression, grief, worry, and despair. The current research aimed to determine the effectiveness of schema therapy on emotional expression and emotional maturity in conflicting couples. Methods and Materials: The research method was a quasi-experimental design with pre-test, post-test, and a control group with a three-month follow-up period. The statistical population of the current study included all conflicting couples seeking help at counseling clinics and psychological services in District 1 of Tehran in 2023, from which 30 couples were selected through convenience sampling and randomly placed into two groups, 15 couples in the experimental group and 15 in the control group. Assessment tools included the Sanaie Marital Conflict Questionnaire (2000), the Singh and Bhargava Emotional Maturity Scale (1990), and the King and Emmons Emotional Expression Questionnaire (1990). The experimental group underwent eight two-hour schema therapy sessions based on Young et al. (2003) twice a week. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance. Findings: Results showed significant differences between groups in post-test and follow-up in emotional expression and emotional maturity (p < .05), and schema therapy had lasting effects during the follow-up period (p < .05). Conclusion: Schema therapy can be used as an effective approach to improve emotional expression and emotional maturity in conflicting couples.

Abstract:
The present study was conducted with the aim of comparative investigation of the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment-based therapy and schema therapy on emotional expression among couples with marital burnout. This research in terms of purpose was applied and in terms of implementation method was semi-experimental with a pre-test, post-test and two-month follow-up plan with a control group. The present study population was couples with marital burnout who referred to Astan Mehr Counseling Center in Mashhad in the spring of 2022 year. The sample size was 30 couples and 10 couples were considered for each of the three groups, which were selected by purposive sampling method and randomly replaced with the help of lottery in three equal groups. The first experimental group 8 sessions of 90 minute underwent the acceptance and commitment-based therapy, and the second experimental group 11 sessions of 90 minute underwent the schema therapy and during this time, the control group did not receive any intervention. The tools of the current research were the demographic information form and questionnaires of Pines' marital burnout (1996) and King and Emmons' emotional expression (1990) which whose psychometric indicators were confirmed. To analyze the data of this study were used from the method of analysis of variance with repeated measurements and Bonferroni's post hoc test in SPSS software. The findings showed that the methods of acceptance and commitment-based therapy and schema therapy in compared to the control group improved the emotional expression among couples with marital burnout and the results remained in the follow-up phase (P<0.05). Other findings showed that there was no significant difference between the methods of acceptance and commitment-based therapy and schema therapy in improving the emotional expression among couples with marital burnout (P>0.05). Considering the effectiveness of both methods on improving emotional expression and the lack of significant difference between them, it is suggested to counselors and therapists to use both mentioned methods along with other treatment methods to improve emotional expression.

Abstract:
Background and purpose: The level of health and mental health in marriage is one of the important criteria that determines the quality of life of couples. The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of short-term dynamic psychotherapy and schema-based therapy on resilience and mental health of couples. Research method: The current research is applied and of an experimental type with a pre-test and post-test design. Among the couples of Tehran city in 1403, 45 people were selected by available sampling method and one group waiting for treatment and two experimental groups (each group of 15 people) were randomly replaced. An experimental group of 8 sessions of 90 minutes was trained with the schema-based treatment method and an experimental group of 8 sessions of 90 minutes was trained with the short-term dynamic psychotherapy method, and the waiting group did not receive training. The groups completed the Mental Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Questionnaire as a pre-test and post-test. Covariance statistical test was used to analyze the data. Findings: The results showed that there was a significant difference in the mean mental health score in the short-term dynamic psychotherapy trial group and in the schema-based therapy trial group (p<0.01) and there was no significant difference in the control group. Also, the results showed that schema therapy has more effectiveness and durability than short-term dynamic psychotherapy in improving and increasing couples' resilience. Conclusion: The findings of this research acknowledge the importance of using schema therapy and short-term dynamic psychotherapy in increasing the mental health and resilience of couples. These two approaches can be used to reduce the damage in marital relationships.

Abstract:
Background and Aim: Marriage conflicts occur when there is disagreement, incompatibility, or disagreement between couples, therefore, this research aimed to compare the effectiveness of schema mode cards and the effectiveness of cognitive processing therapy on problem-solving skills in conflicted couples. Methods: The purpose of the present research was applied. Its method was quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design, two experimental groups and a control group, and a two-month follow-up period. The statistical population of the research included all the couples who were referred to the counseling centers of the 10th district of Tehran in 1400. Thirty couples were selected by available sampling and randomly assigned to two experimental and one control group. The research tools included the Marital Conflict Questionnaire (MCQ), Hepner's Problem Solving Scale (1982), Cognitive Processing Therapy Training Package by Rasik et al. (2007), and Tabatabai Far et al. was implemented for the experimental groups. The obtained data were analyzed using repeated measure variance. Results: The findings indicate that teaching schema mode cards on all components of problem-solving, including trust in problem-solving (Eta coefficient = 0.61), avoidance-tendency style (Eta coefficient = 0.51), and personal problem (Eta coefficient = 0.35), is compelling. Also, cognitive processing treatment is effective on the above components with coefficients of 0.75, 0.56 and 0.40, respectively. The effectiveness of both approaches was stable in the follow-up phase, according to Bonferroni's post hoc test. The findings showed that teaching schema mode cards were more effective than cognitive processing intervention in problem-solving components (P<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the available findings, it can be concluded that both methods of teaching schema mode cards and cognitive processing therapy can be used to increase problem-solving in conflicting couples. According to the cultural context and localization of schema mode cards, it can be more useful in problem-solving in conflicting couples.

Abstract:
Human relationships are like waves that go through various ups and downs. These fluctuations can sometimes be harmful, while at other times they add diversity and dynamism to relationships. In life, relationships play a key role as they give us a sense of being alive and help us navigate life's challenges more easily. This study examines the impact of schemas and emotions on the formation of healthy relationships after identifying the dimensions of the issue. To test the hypotheses, data were collected through questionnaires. The statistical population of this study included couples living in Tehran, from which samples were selectively chosen. The sampling method was purposive, based on the target population and considering the conditions of the test, the research was conducted among active community members using purposive sampling. The sample size was determined to be at least 121 couples, and ultimately, 156 couples (312 individuals) from Tehran completed the questionnaires. The collected data were processed for statistical analysis using SPSS software. The internal reliability of the questionnaire was calculated to be above 0.05, indicating an acceptable level of significance. The results show that changing maladaptive schemas and improving emotion regulation can help improve the quality of interpersonal relationships. Using methods such as schema therapy, which focuses on treating and reconstructing these patterns, can have a positive impact on the dynamics of relationships.
