Abstract:
ABSTRACT Infertility, whether reasons known or unexplained, has been shown to cause a high amount of stress for people who receive this diagnosis. Increased emotional stress can lead to more of a decreased chance of conception, along with other medical problems. Around the world infertility counseling is becoming a new focus for medical professionals to work combined with fertility treatments and help couples conceive. Couples using medicines to help with conception, undergoing intrauterine insemination, and in vitro fertilization who have added counseling to treatment have shown an increase in conception rates. Utilizing a community sample of 58 couples (116 individuals), we tested a brief couples counseling approach, the Integrative Model of Brief Couples Counseling (IMBCC). Participants received 4–6 sessions of couples counseling conducted by graduate students during their supervised field experience. We assessed participants’ marital adjustment and psychological distress at pretest and posttest. Results indicated significant decreases in psychological distress and improved marital adjustment following couples counseling utilizing the IMBCC. Further research utilizing randomized controls is suggested.

Abstract:
Marriages in Ghana are usually preceded by counseling. It is believed that premarital counseling helps to sustain marriages because it gives couples the initial skills needed to enable them to start their marriage and solve minor problems that may be encountered in the relationship. This study was aimed at assessing the significance of premarital counseling to the sustenance of marriage. The study adopted a mixed methodological approach in gathering the data. Data was gathered from 112 individuals from three different suburbs of the capital city of Ghana. The results showed that although pre-marital counseling was observed to be important for would-be couples, it does not help sustain all marriages. Married couples that were given pre-marital counseling were getting separated as well as those who never had pre-marital counseling. It is therefore recommended that although premarital counseling may be necessary, it is not sufficient to sustain marriages. Therefore, counseling should continue even after marriage.

Abstract:
Couples face significant concerns while undergoing fertility treatment as they cope with complex decision-making, rigid medication schedules, side effects, and the ongoing process of dealing with the diagnosis of infertility. This highlights the increasing need for counselors to become educated and specialized in the unique support fertility patients require. Attachment theory and emotionally focused therapy can help counselors understand how to work with couples experiencing infertility, providing opportunities for new bonding, connection through grief and loss, and potentially a more smooth transition into parenthood.

Abstract:
Sixteen years of war created significant challenges for military couples and seems to contribute to their relational distress. Military couples seek out pastoral counselors for assistance with their relational distress. Many of these pastoral counselors are military chaplains or pastors serving close to military bases. The integration of pastoral counseling with evidence-based theory is presented as an option to serve military couples in their relational distress. Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy is presented as an example.

Abstract:
Background and Aim: The quality of sexual satisfaction of couples plays an essential role in marital dissatisfaction; therefore, sexual satisfaction training can be effective in reducing this marital problem. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of sexual satisfaction model training on reducing couples’ distress among couples referring to counseling centers. Methods & Materials: This was a quasi-experimental study with pretest-posttest and a control group design. The statistical population of the study included all couples referring to counseling centers in Sanandaj City, in the academic year of 2019-2020. The instruments used in this research were Couple Burnout Measure (CBM). After selecting the sample and randomly forming two groups of 30 experimental and control groups, a pretest was conducted on the study groups. The researcher provided eight 90-minutes training sessions to the experimental group as a model of sexual satisfaction. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS. Ethical Considerations: This study was approved by Ethics Committee of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences (Code: IR.MUK.REC.1397.5037). Results: The current research results revealed a significant difference (P≤0.001) between the experimental and control groups concerning marital boredom (F=35.581) and its dimensions, including physical fatigue (F=25.074), emotional exhaustion (F=39.031), and mental exhaustion (F=35.020); the effect of the educational program was equal to 0.42, 0.31, 0.41, and 0.39, respectively. Conclusion: The present study findings indicated that sex education model training was effective in reducing couples’ referrals to counseling centers.

Abstract:
Adult romantic attachment is strongly associated with couple relationship functioning, and many efforts have been made to identify the mechanisms underlying this link. Nevertheless, no previous study considered unforgiveness when investigating the relationship of romantic attachment with relationship satisfaction in couples. We used the actor–partner interdependence mediation model to explore the associations between romantic attachment and relationship satisfaction as mediated by unforgiveness (i.e., avoidance and revenge motivations) in a convenience sample of 104 Chilean couples. The couples completed self-report measures of romantic attachment, unforgiveness, and relationship satisfaction. Actor insecure attachment was associated with lower relationship satisfaction directly and indirectly. Indirectly, higher actor levels of attachment anxiety and avoidance were linked, respectively, to greater revenge and avoidance motivations, and thus to lower relationship satisfaction. Partner attachment avoidance was associated with lower relationship satisfaction only directly. Higher partner levels of attachment anxiety were associated with lower avoidance motivation, and thus with higher relationship satisfaction. These dyadic findings further attest to the detrimental role of attachment avoidance and unforgiveness against the couple’s functioning. The novel finding that attachment anxiety may indirectly promote a couple’s relationship satisfaction deserves further investigation. The implications for couple counseling and therapy are discussed.

Abstract:
AbstractGenetic service for couples plays an increasingly important role in diagnosis and risk management. This study investigated the status of consanguinity and the medical genetic history (effectiveness and coverage of medical genetic services) in couples residing in a city in southern Iran. We questioned couples who were referred to Behbahan Marital Counseling Center, Behbahan, Iran, during the period from January to November 2014, to obtain information on consanguinity, disease history, and previous referral to a medical genetics center. For the collected data was obtained descriptive statistics with STATA 11.0 software. A total of 500 couples were questioned. Mean age was 24.8 ± 5.2 years. Almost one quarter (23.4%) of the couples were consanguineous. Consanguinity was almost twice as common in rural areas as in urban areas (33.9 vs. 19.2%, p = 0.001). Only a few couples (~3.0%) had ever been referred for genetic counseling. The main reason for previous genetic counseling was consanguinity (85.7%). The majority of the participants (96.3%) had never been tested for any genetic conditions. Our findings suggest that only a small proportion of couples in Khuzestan Province, Iran (Behbahan City) were receiving adequate genetics care. This may reflect the limited accessibility of such services, and inadequate awareness and education among the care providers.

Abstract:
Reports data gathered from a national sample of clergy (N = 231) pertaining to their beliefs, practices, and training in premarital counseling (PMC). Notes that 94% of the clergy agreed that PMC should be required of all couples prior to marriage, and nearly 100% of the sample clergy provided PMC to couples they married. Points out that approximately 50% of clergy received no academic training in PMC, leaving 50% providing such services without having been trained in premarital counseling.
