Full textMy thesis is at the crossroads of social, cultural and technical history. It deals with the duties of the Carver who was entrusted with a major assignment at the Royal Court: he was given the delicate task of carving the food and serving up the dishes for his Lord. This office, first performed by the royal officers, became a profession at the end of the middle ages and at the beginning of the renaissance period, as may be attested by the multiplication of treaties on carving in Spain and Italy issued at that time. The antiquity of the "arte Cisaria" (1423) led me to wonder about its influence on the Catalan and Italian treaties on carving which were the established later on. I also wondered afterwards to what extent these treaties complied with the established norms. Finally, in order to understand the place occupied by the Carver within the Royal Court, I focused my prosopographic research on the reigns of the Aragonese kings Ferdinand I, and his son Alphonse V
Albert, Laure. "Recherches sur l'iconographie des fêtes de cour en France (1515-1589)." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AIXM3131.
Full textDealing with the iconography of fetes in the Renaissance means investigating into humanism and the neo Platonist currents of thought which influenced the artists of the time and led to the syncretism of arts in court celebrations. In the ephemeral art of revels -entries, masquerades, balls and ballets- the costumes of mythical figures from the Bible or the Antiquity were then brought back to the fashion of the sixteenth century with a playful twist and updated through the new themes inspired by the Great Explorations, such as the contrast between the exoticism of the New World and the traditions of the Old World. Along with those codes, the establishment of a new decorum allowed the evolution of the notion of performance and of the places best suited for theatricals. Social and political issues of a time fraught with religious wars, alliances and peace, also contributed in paving the way for such changes.Celebrations thus proved the quintessential instrument of the assertion of royal power, which turned them into vectors of communication, not to say communion. Both sumptuous and innovative, they foreshadowed the magnificent fetes of the following centuries
Meiss-Even, Marjorie. "Etre ou avoir : les ducs de Guise et leur paraître (1506-1588)." Thesis, Tours, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010TOUR2024.
Full textThis work deals with the material culture – understood as a comprehensive phenomenon which both fashions and is fashioned by society, culture and individuals – of French Renaissance aristocrats. The House of Guise case study unveils the variety of goods a 16th-century great household needed in order to stay in keeping with its rank in the court society. It further reveals the financial consequences for noble houses of the ever-increasing obligation to appear splendidly. The social practices that lay behind shopping are also examined. Beyond a mere description, this work underlines the values embodied in the noble material environment and stresses the part objects took in the redefining of Renaissance elite identity

Full textThere are numerous visitors who visit the court during the reign of Louis XIV. Their writings give evidence of the european influence of the court of France. These authors are divided between those who side with the propaganda policy and those who express a divergent opinion. This work offers a study of stereotypes and commonplaces used to refer to the others as “foreigners” at the court. Writing is considered as an intrument to discover “la Cour et la Ville” and to affirm the foreign identity. The foreign observer figure is also examined in his litterary component

Full textThis study does not focus in on animals as much as it questions the way they have been used by men and the part they played in the development of court life. In the first part, I address the relation between man and animal in the court context, from the standpoint of the architectural forms, administrative structures as well as the social and legal framework, in which the relation blossomed during the transition of 16th to the 17th century (chapter I to III). Chapter IV deals with yet another aspect of the man-animal relation, describing the use of the latter for alimentary purposes. The second part questions the animals’ participation in the court dynamics, at a point when, beginning with Louis XIII’s reign, courtization accelerated. My first concern was to give a detailed account of the animal’s role in the conception of the cultural models conveyed by propaganda and sponsorship originating from princes (chapter V and chapter VI). On the internal level, chapter VII and VIII describe the way the development of hunting crews and the codification of royal hunts participate in courtization. In the third part, I examine the impact of the court’s settlement on animal populations and the development of zoological architecture. Chapter IX describes the Ménagerie of Versailles, while the next one addresses the joint process of institutionalization of scientific patronage. Finally, in chapter XI and XII, I argue that the selective distribution of animals depending on the court residencies had an impact on spatial organization

Full textRenewing traditional approaches to court studies, this Ph. D. Proposes to study the court of Tuscany, not from the point of view of the Prince, but from that of the courtiers. The thesis focuses on the group of the Gentlemen of the Privy Chamber, who are studied thanks to an approach that combines both prosopography and biography. Thus the Ph. D. Strives to grasp the precise role and attributions of these courtiers as well as their relationships with court institutions. The idea is to find out whether to a title corresponds one type of individual. In the process, the characteristics traditionally associated to courtiers, such as their involvement in set social networks or in court life, are systematically re-examined. To a sociological reading of the court inspired by Norbert Elias, is therefore substituted a historical one that studies courtiers in the specific context of the negotiated relationships linking the Medici and their subjects

Full textAccording to the caricatures its detractors produced from the time of the Restoration onwards, adorned with the colours of truth after "the Three Glorious" Days, the Bourbon Court of France would be nothing but anachronistic and ridiculous. This retrospective condemnation prevents from understanding the centrality of Royal Households and Court society in France between 1814 and 1830. As a means to legitimize the hereditary principle embodied by the ruling dynasty, glorify their prominence and stage the scenario of a sacred monarchy, the Restoration Court must be approached from an inner view which traces its roots, the terms of its recreation and its structuring logics. Although it replicates the rules defined by Norbert Elias as typical of the Old Regime, the restored Court society differs from them by the predominancy of courtiers depicted as pure followers within the close intimacy of the Bourbons. An « Ark of legitimacy », a sanctuary of royal traditions, and a center of oppositions to governments, the Court overcame its nationalization through the reform of November 1820, but hastened the assimilation of the courtiers into a coterie, irretrievably alien to the people of France and hostile to liberties. Disavowed by the legitimist pretender to the throne, the Restoration Court was liquidated as early as the year 1830 by the King of the French, who nevertheless had to quickly come to terms with some its legacies so as to create the national Court of the July Monarchy

Full textWe have undertaken to explore, from a social, historical and anthropological point of view, the period of time in which the "baroque" languages of the arts were elaborated by resorting to the metalanguages and the texts of the time. In the very middle of counter reformation, the baroque man -the courtier- was "performing an act" under the eyes of the prince, the clerics and his peers. He had to control his affectivity by knowing himself, i. E. His "soul". He was torn between a reason able to ensure his salvation and an imagination capable of unleashing passions within him -be they concupiscible, weak and as such admitted, or irascible and leading to perdition. By dint of artistic presentations, the prince carried on a civilizing purpose, meant for reforming the manners. With a view to preserving his power and his dynasty, civil peace and social harmony, he offered his subjects diverting and purgative "entertainments" and his courtiers -his potential rivalsartistic presentations aiming at domesticating their pulsions. Arts were then able to achieve his goals. Taking man into account, with all the parts of his soul, they had passions and reason working together, reconciled in the process and showing a noble view of man. The polyphonic "madrigale", pursuing these objectives in a "mathematic language" -"universal harmony"-, was not qualified to express passions in a convenient way. The "greek" monodic model had imposed itself, giving birth to "monody on a thorough bass". Music had given itself the means to achieve the prince's and its own goals, through the "mimesis" of cognitive and pathetic processes, the working out of the "sprezzatura" and the new status attributed to the interpreter. Music was then able to express "great passions" and "conceive" great forms. Giulio caccini and claudio monteverdi were the most prominent creative composers of the time, from both the point of view of language and of form

Full textAt the turn of the 15th century, Paris, capital of the French Realm, became the centre of a major power stuggle. As the minority and then madness of King Charles VI weakened the monarchy, the Royal Princes began to play a dominant role in governing the country. They therefore stayed in Paris, as by controlling the capital they would also control the country. This work sets out to study the relations which developed between Paris and the court of the Dukes of Burgundy, Philip the Bold, John the Fearless and Philip the Good, during threir stays in the capital, until 1422. The presence of the court in the city was first and foremost visible through the ducal hotels, but also through the movements of court members and the urban spread of signs associated with the dukes. Economic ties were also developed : by buying goods from local merchants, the court influenced the urban market. At the same time, it also had to adapt its logistical organisation to the urban environment. On a personal level, courtiers and city-dwellers had numerous occasions to interact. The duke often intervened to prevent any tension between his people and the townsfolk, whilst building up his Parisian networks through generous gifts. Finally, the court was itself on display on feast days and other special occasions, which were also used as a means of communicating with the townspeople. This emphasises the role played by the court in the exercise of power
Vendramini, Cécile. "La présence musicale française à la cour de Ferrare de 1471 à 1597." Paris 4, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995PA040012.
Full textThe presence of Franco Flemish musicians in the large Italian principalities such as Milan or Florence, and in less powerful duchies as well, such as ferrure, from the beginning of the XIV° century to the end of the XV° century, appears as one of the essential wheels of the cultural relationship between France and the renaissance Italy. If we take the musical life of an Italian duchy for a rather long period as a badkground, can we show that, quantitatively, the ultramontaine musical "invasion" followed the fluctuating interplay of political alliances between France and some small Italian powers ? In other words, did the contingent of French musicians dwindle according to Italian wars and to the opinion showed by the king of France towards some principalities of the peninsula ? The Ferrare duchy stood out as a significant example for us to account for a study on this matter. On the one hand, this duchy which was less known than of Milan or Florence, appears to be the one of all Italian duchies which kept close links with france. On the other hand, because of those links - which were not without stir and deception from both sides - this small state represents, on its own, a typical example of the renaissance Italians' behaviour towards the French who appear either as enemies or benefactors. The subject of this thesis will thus be the study of the French musical presence in Ferrare's court (number of musicians and musical production) throughout the duke of Este’s dynasty, that is to say from 1471, when Ferrare finds itself promoted to the rank of "duche", to 1597, marking the end of the Este’s domination in Ferrare

Full textA study of the abundant archives of the court of Charles V (1500-1556) gives an account of the musical activities financed by this prince of the Renaissance, both Burgundy by his father and Spanish by his mother, during a troubled and violent period marked by the fall of the inheritage of the Dukes of Burgundy into the imperial orbit Habsburg on the throne of Spain. The first part of this study describes the historical and musical context of the Carolingian reign, as well as cultural and institutional legacy of previous reigns, and attempts to define the musical taste of the Emperor. With these clarifications, the second part specifies the court’s musical life, focussing on the palatal activities, events rites of royalty and political meetings. Finally, an history of institutional functioning of this musical life provides a glimpse of the relationships that illustrious singers and composers of the Chapel or instrumentalists of the Stable and the Chamber had with their patron. The whole is completed by a prosopographical dictionary devoted to a few of the four hundred musicians of the court mentioned in the documentation, witch is either summarized or or edited in the annexes and transcriptions of the second volume

Full textThere are two parts to the thesis : I - The commentary on the Italian treatise of Renaissance Court dances on Renaissance Il ballerino of Fabritio Caroso. It is followed by critical notes. II - The translation of the work into French and the musical transcription into modern edition of the eighty one lute tablatures linked to the choreographies. The commentary indicates the primary French sources of the work and some other European sources, then examines the two parts of the treatise. The first one, entitled Primo trattato, gives the rules with the explanation of the steps. The second one, entitled Secondo trattato, contains the poetry, the choreographies and the lute music of the dances in Italian tablature. The main dedicatee of the treatise's Bianca Cappello, and the other dedicatees are presented in relation with the feminine patronage. The study of Caroso's life has led to research about the role go dance in the Italian courts of the Renaissance and the status of the dance-master. The commentary includes Italian historical documents about the dance-master's life. The thesis places Caroso in the wider history of court dance in Italy since the Middle Ages. It then studies the three constituent elements of the work : poetry, music, choreography. It also provides a comparison between the two dance treatise by Caroso : Il ballerino (1581) and Nobility of the ladies (1600), written nearly twenty years later. The criterions of the translation and musical edition are explained. The appendix contains Italian archive documents, musical and iconographic documents. III - The translation of Il ballerina follows the order set by Caroso. The original engravings are included into the translation

Full textThe reign of Henry IV is undoubtedly one of the most important in the history of France, and countless works have been devoted to the study of this monarch. In addition, music from this period has also attracted the interest of scholars, and previous studies have shed light on several aspects of musical life during this reign, notably on the composers connected to Henry’s court (like Pierre Guédron and Eustache Du Caurroy) as well as on the most popular genres from this time (chansons, airs de cour and ballets). Nevertheless, a historical study of music at Henry IV’s court, comparable to those already completed by Christelle Cazaux and Isabelle Handy on the courts of other French monarchs during the sixteenth century, remained to be undertaken. The aim of this doctorate is thus to clarify both the place of music during the celebration of political events and the identity of musicians who worked at Henry IV’s court. It is divided into three main sections. The first focuses on aspects which contributed to the development of music during this reign, including the place of music within noble training and the personal musical inclinations of the royal family. The second concentrates on the function of the different musical groups at court (the Chapel, the Chamber and the Stables). Finally, the last section examines the role of music in court events under Henry IV, such as marriages, funeral ceremonies and royal entries, and this section also encompasses a discussion of music’s place in political events and in the entries of important dignitaries in France at this time

Full textOur thesis approaches the history of Italian and French princely courts through a survey of horsemen's theories and practices from the second half of the XVth century to the 1650s. At that time, horses are an essential element of curial economy, a medium of princely prestige and a mean of social advancement. The first part -"The invention of sources"- invites to discover the sources relating to the equestrian curial institutions (Stables and Studs), to the exchanges between princely households, or to the way equestrian academies for the nobility are run. These sources provide quite a lot of data concerning horse specialists, as we explain in the second part entitled "Horsemen and their Horses in Renaissance Princely Courts". The third part, concerning "Curial economy", examines how a princely household provide itself with the horses it needs for its defence, its leisure activities or its daily routine. The last part -"Mobility and Transfers"- analyzes not only horsemen's mobility and how their know-how spreads, but also the diffusion of cultural models, and of fashionable items of equipment for horses and riders, from court to court, countrywide or abroad. Usually, the development of the equestrian art is considered as a product of the end of the XVth century, when it would have been "discovered" and "imported" from Italy by the French. Nevertheless, Renaissance equestrian models are far from being a fruit of a massive importation of theories, practices and immutable values. They take shape thanks to the exchanges, and to the mobility of horse specialists, young horsemen-to-be travelling to complete their equestrian education, and members of the princely courts

In these memoirs, the writer's opinions on various subjects are recorded, especially : 1 - the proprieties and some rules of etiquette in use at the French court. 2 - a critical analysis of some actions and behaviours observed at the court and which the memorialist considered as either blameful or worthy of being imitated by the court of Portugal, especially in the matter of home and foreign policy. 3 - a survey of what the late seventeenth century had been for France - and in some mesure to Portugal - from the economic, religious and moral viewpoints. The presents study on these hitherto unpublished memoirs consists first in the original text with a French translation facing ; accompanied by an analysis, chronological table, general introduction and notes. An onomastic index of the names mentioned by the memorialist or prompted by the writhing of the notes has been compiled ; the last section of this thesis is a selected bibliography of the principal works that have been used

Full textThis thesis, which is part of the twin historiographical renewal of studies on the aulic phenomenon in Antiquity and the works on the Claudian period, shows how the imperial court gradually constitutes a new place of power, where the close entourage of the Emperor becomes the political centre of the Empire. By focusing on the principate of Claudius, an in-depth study has been done to cover ail aspects of the aulic phenomenon in its spatial, social, political and cultural dimensions. This study is organized around three major themes. First, a reconstruction of the framework within which the court of Claudius was operating. This entailed drawing a map of aulic spaces and restoring its topography. The second major theme focuses on the composition of the imperial court. After having defined and established a prosopographic corpus of some 150 certain members and 40 likely members, this corpus is analyzed according to a synchronic and then a diachronic perspective. Finally, the last section shows that the imperial court is not only a place of power but also a place for the staging power. The review of the mechanisms related to the political functioning of the court allows us to demonstrate that it is a place for collaboration and ongoing negotiation between the élites and the emperor and that its existence is beneficial to both parties. The court must finally be visible: a detailed study of the forms of (self) representation of the court between 41 and 54 is thus proposed
