Abstract:
There is no specific study about Stephan Kalynovskyi, and the texts written about him contain many mistakes. This article presents the biography of Kalynovskyi, including the following stages of his life: student and professor at the Kyiv Academy, archimandrite of the Zaikonospassky Monastery, rector and professor at the Moscow Academy, archimandrite of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, member of the Synod, bishop of Pskov, archbishop of Novgorod. In this article, attention is paid to his relations with students and brethren of monasteries, as well as to his intellectual heritage (philosophical course, Bible translation, his library). The sources portray Kalynovskyi as an innovative teacher because he was one of the first at the Kyiv Academy to teach Greek language, history in the course of rhetoric and ethics in the course of philosophy, and also as an organizer of educational institutions. At the same time, he was a very conflict person. His philosophical course, taught at the Kyiv Academy, was copied verbatim from the philosophical course of the French author Franciscus le Rées.

Abstract:
This article examines the impact of personality traits, learning styles, gender, and online course factors (course difficulty, group affiliation, provided materials, etc.) in the academic success of students taking online courses and their overall success rate through traditional classes. Students’ performance in the online learning environment is still a new perception, and a fair numbers of details are still unknown, in stark contrast to the details known in regard to traditional learning methods. Different types of learners respond differently to online and traditional courses. A case study was performed in which students were asked to attend two online courses, with different difficulty levels, during one semester. One-way analysis of variance was used to determine which factors are significant for the academic performance of students taking online courses, as well as for their overall academic success. Findings from the case study indicate that female students score slightly better, course difficulty has impact on test results, emotional students are more susceptible to online environments, and learning styles are more difficult to identify in online classes.

In article questions of assessment of the risks arising in the course of design, production and operation of means of mechanization of construction using catastrophe theory are considered. In the course of operation of the machine malfunctions, suddenly defiant refusals of details gradually collect. The device of the theory of accidents allows to develop models of change of technical condition and operational properties of a details material for various service conditions. In the field of space of conditions of the system containing critical signs accident emergence conditions (refusal of a detail and an emergency) are created. Assessment of probability of emergence of refusal during a certain period of operation of the machine taking into account weight of consequences allows to establish risk level.

Abstract:
Aim: First Year Seminars (FYS) are a high-impact practice for student success. FYS seminars can offer both personal development and academic goals. Incorporating research papers and presentations into FYS can be challenging to teach but can provide value to students not receiving these skills in other first-semester courses. The goal of this paper was to lay out the details of a deconstruction and reconstruction strategy for teaching research skills in an FYS course. Methods: In the deconstruction and reconstruction approach, students take apart research papers into parts to gain a deeper understanding of how research works. The parts of the research paper are then put back together with the student writing a paper and doing a class presentation. Detail is provided into how to implement this strategy in a classroom, including information on assignment language. Results: This new approach was successful when piloted in a section of the FYS course. Student performance on the deliverables in the course was high. And post-course surveys of students showed positive impacts of their FYS skills on future courses. Conclusion: This strategy focuses on skills in research, PowerPoint, and public speaking. At the end of the course, the students' presentation skills had improved. A deconstruction and reconstruction approach were found to be feasible and potentially valuable. This represents a new approach to teaching research skills in FYS courses.

This article details the process of integrating a 12-week collaborative learning project within a course on Persuasion and Propaganda. We present a specific instantiation of Meyers's (1997) articulation of general principles for incorporating small group projects into college courses. Student groups designed, executed, and evaluated persuasive campaigns to change the attitudes and behavior of target populations. Student self-reports indicated that the course format was significantly more popular than traditional formats in other psychology courses. Moreover, students worked significantly harder for and learned more from the cooperative learning components than from the traditional lecture- and text-based components of this course.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia read by millions seeking medical information. To provide health professions students with skills to critically assess, edit, and improve Wikipedia’s medical content, a skillset aligned with evidence-based medicine (EBM), Wikipedia courses have been integrated into health professions schools’ curriculum. This literature review and curricular inventory of Wikipedia educational initiatives provides an overview of current approaches and identifies directions for future initiatives and research. Methods Five databases were searched for articles describing educational interventions to train health professional students to edit Wikipedia. Course dashboards, maintained by Wiki Education (Wiki Edu), were searched for curricular materials. From these sources, key details were extracted and synthesized, including student and instructor type, course content, educational methods, and student outcomes. Results Six articles and 27 dashboards reported courses offered between 2015 and 2019. Courses were predominantly offered to medical and nursing students. Instructors delivered content via videos, live lectures, and online interactive modules. Course content included logistics of Wikipedia editing, EBM skills, and health literacy. All courses included assignments requiring students to edit Wikipedia independently or in groups. Limited details on assessment of student learning were available. Discussion A small but growing number of schools are training health professions education students to improve Wikipedia’s medical content. Course details are available on Wiki Edu dashboards and, to a lesser extent, in peer-reviewed publications. While more needs to be done in conducting and sharing assessment of student learning, integrating Wikipedia into health professions education has potential to facilitate learning of EBM and communication skills, improve Wikipedia’s online content, and engage students with an autonomous environment while learning. Future considerations should include a thorough assessment of student learning and practices, a final review of student edits to ensure they follow Wikipedia’s guidelines and are written in clear language, and improved sharing of teaching resources by instructors.

Abstract:
Course recommendation aims at finding proper and attractive courses from massive candidates for students based on their needs, and it plays a significant role in the curricula-variable system. However, nearly all students nowadays need help selecting appropriate courses from abundant ones. The emergence and application of personalized course recommendations can release students from that cognitive overload problem. However, it still needs to mature and improve its scalability, sparsity, and cold start problems resulting in poor quality recommendations. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel personalized course recommendation system based on deep factorization machine (DeepFM), namely Deep PersOnalized couRse RecommendatIon System (DORIS), which selects the most appropriate courses for students according to their basic information, interests and the details of all courses. The experimental results illustrate that our proposed method outperforms other approaches.

Babajee, Jayson. "Detailed numerical characterization of the separation-induced transition, including bursting, in a low-pressure turbine environment." Phd thesis, Ecole Centrale de Lyon, 2013. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00984351.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Considered as an -historical subject, rural private dwelling can be integrated into the sphere of modernity due to its emergence in recent centuries, marked by the spread of new social manners, the appearance of architecture treatises and the urban development. With the help of archives and a corpus of 17th-and 18th - centuries breton buildings, the method is combining history and social science allow to study the relations between inhabitants and their habitations. The internal organization results from the existence of architectural devices permitting some selected areas and passages according to the occupant’s status. The technical factors related to the hierarchical organization of the society limit the evolution of forms. The relations between the rural community and the urban/learned community define the factors that influenced rural construction and some normative views of state institutions. Abstract:
This work questions the correlation between theoretical and doctrinal aspects of discourses about the city. It analyses the first series of History of urbanism written by the historian of art Pierre Lavedan (1885-1982), a major reference for town planners, historians and geographers, especially after the Second World War. The hypothesis is that this author, as an intermediary figure between knowledge and action, has produced texts that reflect the positions he has successively occupied in the field of history of art and later in the field of urbanism. The empirical study shows that these positions have in common to support the idea of mediation: as an historian – mediator Pierre Lavedan has nurtured several paradigms of urbanism. This work invites to study the mediation of urbanism and to overcome the critics of the correlation between knowledge and action on the one hand, and of the orientation of history on the other hand, in order to think of the historian – mediator as an actor in the field of urbanism

Abstract:

Based on the principle that cities are well aware of their own position, this thesis shows how two world cities, Paris and New York, built their physical public space by interacting one with the other. This takes place in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. The particular dynamics of this relationship is due to the fact that, first Paris, then New York, is the foremost model of urban modernity. By studying, on both sides, the reciprocal knowledge, the expressions of urban desires, rejections and ambitions as well as urban visions in regards to the other city, this thesis reconstructs a complicated and passionate history. To do this, it analyses texts and images from the professional sphere of architects and engineers as well as from the public sphere and the art world. The history between Paris and New York, thanks to the reversal of one model toward the other, gives a new insight in the more generally cultural aspects that both world cities associate with the modernity of either one. It is a history where the desires and obstacles lead to a far more complexe relationship to modernity itself. Only superficially symmetrical, this relationship is, in fact, profoundly asymmetrical

Abstract:
A considerable number of the books published in the course of the eighteenth century were printed with false details of the place of publication, authorised by the censorship offices themselves. This phenomenon, which was common throughout Europe, was particularly marked in Venice where over 800 titles, among the most sought-after of the time, were licensed exploiting this expedient to get around the bottleneck of the official publishing rules. The volume publishes the registers of the related Venetian documentation, complete with notes and indices that sketch a fairly complete picture of this aspect of the censorship system of the Ancien Régime.

Abstract:
AbstractAs conversations about forced migration shape curriculum, new literature details the problems faced by forcibly displaced refugees. There are fewer resources, however, about how to engage with and highlight migrant voices in our actual classrooms. This paper offers a breakdown of a course offered at Vassar College that sought to devise a novel, grassroots approach to studies of forced migration and education. Titled “Finding Place: Refugee Youth Schooling Experiences in Athens, Greece,” the goals of the course included understanding the socio-economic conditions leading to refugee displacement to Greece, partnering with a refugee-led community organization in Athens for educational programming, and assisting with fieldwork research on refugee education. This chapter discusses how the course integrated restorative justice pedagogy, using one workshop as an example. The chapter also details the course’s pivots and pitfalls, particularly as a result of pandemic-related restrictions upon travel. The authors conclude with recommendations for future initiatives based on experiences with developing instructional material.

Abstract:
AbstractFinancial markets today are highly computerized -- from software-driven order submission to price determination to straight-through clearing and settlement -- computer technology has displaced manual activities and streamlined functions throughout the trading value chain. The previous chapters examined microeconomic principles that underpin trading and price-setting, and finance theory that provides analytical frameworks for market outcomes. Our analysis introduces real market frictions and examines how transactions costs and heterogeneity among market participants makes market structure and tracing mechanism design crucial determinants of market outcomes and behavior. . In this chapter, we drill down further into the realities of a non-frictionless market in order to focus on how technology can enhance the efficiency of an actual marketplace. Challenging market design issues are encountered when developing and operating an actual trading facility, and as IT professionals know, the devil is in the details. The practical considerations in operating a market system successfully are the next topic this book addresses.

AbstractAfter an introduction to the life-course perspective, this fourth chapter gives an overview of the research design. It details the reasons behind the choice of the birth-cohorts under study: the “generation of new China” and the “generation of reforms” that encapsulate the profound transformations from Maoist collectivism to Deng Xiaoping’s era of economic reforms.Furthermore, the chapter reveals how the mixed methods research design was built and it gives insights into the sample composition. The qualitative strand of the research captures variations in the transition to adulthood experienced by 45 individuals born between 1978 and 1993. It unveils lived experiences, challenges, and authentic voices. The quantitative strand reveals the journey to adulthood of 615 young people born between 1980 and 1985, and of 301 people born between 1950 and 1959. The quantitative data are retrospective longitudinal data. They were collected using a life-course matrix (calendar) to provide complete information on individuals’ biographical paths and their temporality. In the initial phase of the research, qualitative and quantitative data were separately analyzed to address specific dimensions of the research question. The chapter explains that subsequent step involved triangulation, facilitating the integration of insights from both data types.

Abstract:
Abstract When failure occurs to a component, the use of a systematic analytical approach is the first step in properly identifying the root cause of the failure. This approach should include acquisition of the pertinent background data and service history, followed by thorough visual examination, photographic documentation and laboratory evaluation as needed. It is imperative during the course of any such evaluation to take the known service history into account, particularly when the features do not clearly indicate the failure mode. It is equally important to conduct all of the necessary evaluations to properly identify the cause of the failure, and avoid taking shortcuts by omitting evaluations. When inaccurate background information is relied upon during the course of a failure investigation, or when critical evaluations are omitted, the test data and component features could be confusing or misleading. This article details the failure analysis process and illustrates potentially misleading details in failures involving stress corrosion cracking (SCC).

Clement, Timothy, and Brett Vaughan. Evaluation of a mobile learning platform for clinical supervision. University of Melbourne, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46580/124369.

Full text
Abstract:
Context: This report details a formative evaluation of the Clinical Supervision Online (CSO) course, a fee-paying, fully online ‘light touch’ program of study for clinical supervisors offered by the Melbourne Medical School, which was developed in conjunction with the University’s Mobile Learning Unit. The course requires between six to ten hours of self-directed study and is designed for any clinicians who teach. Methods: Evaluation of the course was guided by Rossi, Lipsey and Freeman’s (2004) approach to program evaluation, addressing the need for the course, its design, implementation, impact, and return on investment. Data were collected through interviews with key informants, document analysis, an embedded student survey, learning analytics data, financial data, and an audit against ‘best practice’ standards for online course design. Findings: The findings suggest that course development was driven by both a financial imperative and genuine concern to meet training needs of clinical supervisors. Two hundred and four students enrolled on the course in its first 18 months. This has been enough to cover its developmental costs. In relation to 64 quality standards for online course design, the level of performance was rated as ‘meets’ for 44 items; ‘exceeds’ for one item; ‘developing for 13 items’; and, ‘non-existent’ for six items. An additional 33 items were identified as ‘not applicable’ for the ‘light touch’ course design. Significance: From a learning design perspective there is much to like about the CSO course and the outcome of assessing it against the standards for ‘best practice’ online course design suggests that an evolutionary approach - making incremental changes - could improve the course whilst retaining its existing ‘light touch’ format. The CSO course on its own is unlikely to realise the depth of achievement implied in the course aims and learning outcomes. The CSO course may best be seen as an entrée into the art of clinical supervision.

Abstract:
The EXPORTS North Atlantic field campaign (EXPORTS-NA) of May 2021 used a diverse array of ship-based and autonomous platforms to measure and quantify processes leading to carbon export in the open ocean. The success of this field program relied heavily on the ability to make measurements following a Lagrangian trajectory within a coherent, retentive eddy (Sections 1, 2). Identifying an eddy that would remain coherent and retentive over the course of a monthlong deployment was a significant challenge that the EXPORTS team faced. This report details the processes and procedures used by the primarily shore-based eddy tracking team to locate, track, and sample with autonomous assets such an eddy before and during EXPORTS-NA.

Abstract:
This document details trends in remittances to Latin America and the Caribbean in 2011, paying particular attention to the effects of recent economic growth. Over the course of 2011, remittance flows to Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) showed signs of a solid recovery, reaching growth rates close to those recorded before the start of the global economic crisis. Since the last quarter of 2008, the increases in unemployment rates in traditional sending countries like the United States, Spain, and Japan, and the ensuing drops in incomes among LAC migrants had caused an unprecedented decline in the volume of remittances sent to the region. In 2010, remittances to LAC showed signs of stabilization, finishing on a positive growth trend that resulted in an annual volume that was slightly higher than the previous year. In 2011, the countries in the region received a total of US$ 61 billion in remittances, which represents an increase of 6% over the previous year.

Helman, Shaun, Jill Weekley, Annabel Knightley, et al. Evaluation of NDORS courses. TRL, 2024. https://doi.org/10.58446/isak8436.

Full text
Abstract:
The National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme (NDORS) comprises behaviour change courses offered to road traffic offenders instead of prosecution. This report presents an evaluation of the majority of these courses, to establish whether they changed behaviour, how long any change was maintained, what psychological mechanisms bring about the change, barriers to change experienced by attendees, and how the courses could be improved. Self-reported survey data on underlying attitudes and behaviours was collected before and after courses. Interviews and focus groups were used to gather detailed feedback from attendees. Survey data was only usable for the National Speed Awareness Course due to low sample size mainly caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It showed improved attitudes to speed and knowledge of limits, better engagement with road safety, and fewer hazardous driving events after course attendance. Some specific changes in self-reported speed choice were also observed suggesting specific information from the course was retained and used. These changes were retained two months after the course. Attendees across all courses evaluated noted that trainers were very important in achieving change, as were the specific tips provided to help them identify specific triggers to offending when driving. Attendees were pleasantly surprised that the tone of the courses was not 'judgemental' and this approach helped people to move their self-image from someone who had been 'caught out' to someone who could benefit from challenging their driving behaviour. Overall, the findings suggest that the courses are having a positive impact on the behaviours they target and are working through a range of mechanisms to produce this. While the quantity and form of data collected varies across courses, there are consistent findings of positive impact. Several potential improvements to courses are also suggested.

Full text
Abstract:
This report describes the results of technical analysis, field tests, and laboratory tests that were performed for LED highway lighting options by the Energy Efficiency and Reliability Center (EERC) at Purdue University Northwest for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). This effort was conducted over the past 3 years to evaluate and test the technology and viability of using modern highway lighting technology to enhance energy efficiency, safety, security, and economic development of communities and roadways. During the testing period there was a continuous discussion between INDOT and EERC regarding the laboratory and field testing of INDOT approved luminaires submitted by vendors. There were multiple discussions with INDOT and vendors regarding the individual details and issues for the 29 luminaires that were tested. A comparison study was conducted by EERC of the various alternatives and comparison to currently installed luminaires. Data was collected for field tests of the luminaires by EERC and INDOT personnel for the luminaires. Field data was evaluated and compared to lighting models using vendor supplied ies data files. Multiple presentations were made at 3 separate Purdue Road Schools regarding the results and procedures of the testing program by EERC in conjunction with INDOT. A total of 22 final reports, considered confidential by INDOT, for individual vendor luminaires have been prepared as part of this effort. These reports were submitted sequentially to INDOT as testing was completed during the course of this effort. A total of 29 luminaires were tested. Some luminaire testing was terminated during testing due to design issues or vendor requests. All testing was summarized in the INDOT specification sheet attached to each report. Observations regarding the consistency of the supplied test luminaire with the requirements of Section 7.2 of the INDOT test procedure “Procedure for evaluation and approval list requirements for solid state ballasted luminaires ITM 957-17P” is provided in the Appendix to the report for each luminaire. Details regarding how these tests were performed and the respective associated evaluation of performance and reliability are provided in the report. This effort included: consideration of published and vendor information; appraisal of products consistent with national industry standards; review of physical design, thermal performance; laboratory testing of photopic performance, reliability, life cycle data and characteristics, and power characteristics; technical and probabilistic risk studies; and field testing and analysis of LED light sources including comparison to currently installed conventional light sources. Assistance in preparing INDOT standards for highway lighting was provided on multiple occasions.

The designed course includes the following modules: development of VR tools (VR and Game Engines; physical interactions and camera; 3D interface and positioning; 3D user interaction; VR navigation and introduction) and development of AR tools (set up AR tools in Unity 3D; development of a project for a photograph; development of training materials with Vuforia; development for promising devices). The course lasts 16 weeks and contains the task content and patterns of performance. It is ascertained that the course enhances development of competences of designing and using innovative learning tools. There are provided the survey of the course participants concerning their expectations and the course results. Reduced amounts of independent work, increased classroom hours, detailed methodological recommendations and increased number of practical problems associated with STEM subjects are mentioned as the course potentials to be implemented.

Ukiwe and McDonnell. L52362 Assessing the Performance of Above Ground Coating Evaluation Surveys. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010686.

Abstract:
The primary application area for above ground coating evaluation (AGCES) methods is for unpiggable pipelines. For several reasons, however, AGCES methods are not necessarily limited along these narrow lines. For instance, most ILI tools are incapable of identifying external corrosion (which resulted from coating damage overtime) until the wall loss damage has reached the measurable detection threshold of the ILI tool. Thus, even for piggable pipelines, AGCES methods still come in handy for pipeline integrity. In fact, the most proactive approach for pipeline corrosion integrity management for the future will include complementary surveys, such as ECDA and ICDA, all super-imposed and integrated on a common GIS framework for comparative and comprehensive data analysis. Within the pipeline industry there exist divergent views about the AGCES methods, their principles of operation, and limitations. An important defining point about AGCES methods is simple this: they are indirect inspection methods for identifying and classifying external coating damage; they are not - and should not be - tied to the functionalities of any specific proprietary tools or hardware manufactures. The second statement requires further qualification. Confusion is often created among users of AGCES methods when the names of certain coating survey tool are interchanged with the specific survey methods in question. For instance, company A manufactures a device C for detecting coating anomalies. The tendency within the industry is to call the coating survey method such names as "C Survey" or "C Coating Survey". The problem created in this instance is to limit AGCES methods to what device C can capture; the quality of the data become handicapped by that of device C. Industry standards have been created to avoid the fore-going pitfalls. Hence, rather than limit survey methods to the specifications of a given proprietary tool, attempts should be made to manufacture and design tools to meet industry standards. The result will be uniformity of methodology, the only distinctions being speed of data acquisition, methods of data analysis, and possibly, other subtle differences in technological advancements. Included in this distinction is the use of analog versus digital data acquisition methods. Of course, all that has been described so far assumes that the industry standards referenced captures all the details of an effective coating evaluation survey method, including known and even perceived limitations.
