Abstract:
This paper aims to investige about congenital diseases are an absolute risk in all types of cousin marriages. Methods: this review is a review of literature on cousin marriages and congenital diseases in cousin marriages, as well as qualitative research conducted on the Mandailing community in the village of Tanjung Baringin, North Sumatra, which practices many cross-breed cousins. Results show the risk of the illness impacted by cousin marriage, is not an absolute negative impact on all cousin pairs. A parallel cousin has a great chance to experience it. This can be proved by some researchers who investige health risks in populations that practices parallel cousin marriage. In cross-cousin pairs did not find any health risks. Therefore, cousin marriage still exixtsnce until now, especially in cross cousin marriage.

Abstract:
SummaryThe present cross-sectional study was done in order to illustrate the prevalence and types of consanguineous marriages among Afghanistan populations. Data on types of marriages were collected using a simple questionnaire. The total number of couples in the study was 7140 from the following provinces: Badakhshan, Baghlan, Balkh, Bamyan, Kabul, Kunduz, Samangan and Takhar. Consanguineous marriages were classified by the degree of relationship between couples: double first cousins, first cousins, first cousins once removed, second cousins and beyond second cousins. The coefficient of inbreeding (F) was calculated for each couple and the mean coefficient of inbreeding (α) estimated for each population. The proportion of consanguineous marriages in the country was 46.2%, ranging from 38.2% in Kabul province to 51.2% in Bamyan province. The equivalent mean inbreeding coefficient (α) was 0.0277, and ranged from 0.0221 to 0.0293 in these two regions. There were significant differences between provinces for frequencies of different types of marriages (p<0.001). First cousin marriages (27.8%) were the most common type of consanguineous marriages, followed by double first cousin (6.9%), second cousin (5.8%), beyond second cousin (3.9%) and first cousin once removed (1.8%). There were significant differences between ethnic groups for the types of marriages (χ2=177.6, df=25, p<0.001). Tajiks (Soni) and Turkmens (also Pashtuns) showed the lowest (α=0.0250) and highest (α=0.0297) mean inbreeding coefficients, respectively, among the ethnic groups in Afghanistan. The study shows that Afghanistan's populations, like other Islamic populations, have a high level of consanguinity.

Abstract:
This cross-sectional study was carried out to examine the pattern and prevalence of congenital malformation/ genetic disorders among the offspring of consanguineous marriages in Quetta, Pakistan. A survey was conducted among 105 married couples from different areas of Quetta city. 89 out of 105 consanguineous couples were related as first cousins, followed by second cousin (n=16) and third cousin (n=6) couples. Consanguineous marriages were common among women who were illiterate (43.8%) and unemployed (87.6%). Highest number of child mortality (61.9%) and abnormalities (32.1%) were observed among the children of first cousin marriages. The most common congenital malformation /genetic disorders were mental retardation (24.13%), followed by diabetes (10.3%), deafness (6.8%) and thalassemia (6.8%). Among all the inter-related marriages, first cousin marriages are at highest risk to have babies with congenital anomalies.

BackgroundUsing three independent methods, prior studies in Swedish sibling pairs indicate that environmental factors contribute substantially to familial aggregation for drug abuse (DA). Could we replicate these results in cousin pairs?MethodUsing multiple Swedish public databases (1964–2011), we defined DA using medical, legal or pharmacy registry records and examined concordance in full cousin pairs as a function of age differences, younger–older relationships and geographical proximity while growing up.ResultsReplicating prior results in siblings, cousin pairs were significantly more similar in their history of DA if they were (i) closer versus more distant in age and (ii) grew up in high versus low geographical proximity to one another. Furthermore, controlling for background factors, having an older cousin with DA conveys a greater risk for DA than having a younger drug-abusing cousin. The greater transmission of DA from older to younger versus younger to older cousin was more prominent in pairs who grew up close to one another. In age difference and geographical proximity analyses, effects were consistently strongest in male–male cousin pairs. In analyses of older → younger versus younger → older transmission, effects were stronger in male–male and male–female than in female–female or female–male relative pairs.ConclusionsIn accord with prior results in siblings, environmental factors contribute substantially to the familial aggregation of DA in cousins and these effects are, in general, stronger in males than in females.

Résumé La correspondance entre la marquise de Sévigné et son cousin le comte de Bussy forme un ensemble équilibré de plus de trois cents lettres, réparties sur quarante-six années, ensemble qu'on souhaiterait pouvoir lire dans une commode édition séparée. Très tôt les deux cousins ont mutuellement apprécié la qualité de leur écriture épistolaire, et se sont déclaré l'un à l'autre le plaisir qu'ils prenaient à s'écrire, et à entendre les finesses de leur dialogue. Leur longue dispute, née du refus par la marquise d'un prêt d'argent à son cousin, et du portrait satirique inséré par celui-ci dans l' Histoire amoureuse des Gaules , a été l'occasion de lettres au ton violent mais écrites avec soin, où l'affrontement traduit aussi une rivalité dans le maniement de la plume. Au cours du va-et-vient épistolaire, c'est en général Mme de Sévigné qui a l'initiative et montre la voie, tandis que Bussy répond, c'est-à-dire commente ou critique les formules de sa cousine, dans lesquelles il admire non seulement le naturel mais aussi les tours singuliers et les traits de maître . Aussi était-il assuré de plaire au roi, lorsqu'il lui fit connaître, en les insérant dans un fragment manuscrit de ses propres mémoires, quelques-unes des lettres qu'il avait reçues de la marquise.

SummaryIn genetics, a consanguineous marriage means union between couples who are related as second cousins or closer. The present cross-sectional study was carried out in order to illustrate the prevalence and types of consanguineous marriages in the Shi'a population living in widespread territories in Lebanon including the Bekaa Valley, the south of Lebanon and the southern suburb of Beirut. Data on types of marriages were collected using a simple questionnaire. The total number of couples in the study was 1203. Consanguineous marriage was classified by the degree of relationship between couples. The overall frequency of consanguinity was found to be 28.4%, with first cousin marriages (21.3%) being the most common type followed by first cousins once removed (5.5%), then double first cousins (0.8%). The frequencies of second cousin and beyond second cousin marriages were the same at 0.4% of all the marriages. The mean inbreeding coefficient (α) was estimated at about 0.0161 for the population. There were no significant differences between the three studied territories for frequencies of different types of marriages (p>0.1), nor were there significant differences between the rural and urban areas (p>0.1).

SummaryConsanguineous marriage is the union of individuals having at least one common ancestor. The present cross-sectional study was done in order to illustrate the prevalence and types of consanguineous marriages in the Syrian Arab Republic. Data on consanguineous marriages were collected using a simple questionnaire. The total number of couples in this study was 67,958 (urban areas: 36,574 couples; rural areas: 31,384 couples) from the following provinces: Damascus, Hamah, Tartous, Latakia, Al Raqa, Homs, Edlep and Aleppo. In each province urban and rural areas were surveyed. Consanguineous marriage was classified by the degree of relationship between couples: double first cousins (F=1/8), first cousins (F=1/16), second cousins (F=1/64) and beyond second cousins (F<1/64). The coefficient of inbreeding (F) was calculated for each couple and the mean coefficient of inbreeding (α) estimated for the population of each province, stratified by rural and urban areas. The results showed that the overall frequency of consanguinity was 30.3% in urban and 39.8% in rural areas. Total rate of consanguinity was found to be 35.4%. The equivalent mean inbreeding coefficient (α) was 0.0203 and 0.0265 in urban and rural areas, respectively. The mean proportion of consanguineous marriages ranged from 67.5% in Al Raqa province to 22.1% in Latakia province. The α-value ranged from 0.0358 to 0.0127 in these two provinces, respectively. The western and north-western provinces (including Tartous, Lattakia and Edlep) recorded lower levels of inbreeding than the central, northern and southern provinces. The overall α-value was estimated to be about 0.0236 for the studied populations. First cousin marriages (with 20.9%) were the most common type of consanguineous marriages, followed by double first cousin (with 7.8%) and second cousin marriages (with 3.3%), and beyond second cousin was the least common type.

SummaryIn the 1950s the Seychelles Warbler Acrocephalus sechellensis was a highly threatened single-island endemic species with a population of 26 individuals confined to Cousin Island in the inner Seychelles. Following long-term management of Cousin, the population steadily recovered to around 300–360 birds. In order to give the species the security of additional breeding populations, some warblers were successfully transferred to the islands of Aride and Cousine in September 1988 and June 1990 respectively. During the three years after the transfer to Aride and the first year after the transfer to Cousine, mean territory quality (measured as insect prey available) on these islands was significantly higher than that on Cousin, leading to higher reproductive success per territory and survival of juveniles and adult birds. In November 1991, all transferred birds were still alive, and 205 young had fledged successfully, bringing the total warbler population to c.585 birds. By then there was enough suitable space still remaining on Aride and Cousine for young birds to establish territories and the rise in warbler numbers is expected to continue. The successful establishment of three self-sustaining and viable breeding populations has ensured that the Seychelles Warbler is no longer a globally threatened species.

SummaryConsanguinity, the marriage between relatives, has been associated with adverse child health outcomes. The objective of the present study was to assess the effect of consanguinity on offspring weight gain from birth to 12 months after birth. Data were collected on 250 consecutive live-born singleton newborns referred to a local health centre in Shiraz (Fars province, southern Iran). Collected data covered socio-demographic characteristics (such as parental age at delivery and parental education), sex, birth order, weights from birth to 12 months after birth and consanguinity of marriages of parents. Considering the low prevalence of double first cousin, first cousin once removed, second cousin, and beyond second cousin marriages, only first cousin and unrelated marriages were included in the study. The study population consisted of a total of 207 newborns (57 offspring of first cousins, 150 offspring of unrelated marriages). Based on the results of repeated measurements analysis of variance, weight gain was associated with type of marriage (p=0.018), sex of offspring (p=0.001) and paternal education (p<0.001). There was no interaction between type of marriage and sex (p=0.831). Birth weight was not affected by type of marriage (p=0.46). There was significant interaction between inbreeding and time (p=0.034). Offspring of consanguineous marriages showed lower weight gain in comparison with those of unrelated marriages during 3–12 months after birth.

<p>The aim of this work was to determine if the protein Majastridin found in the proteobacterium Rhodobacter blasticus has a functional relative in the hypothetical protein Q1U8S3/ B3XNV1 found in Lactobacillus reuteri. To be able to study the protein, it was overexpressed in  E. coli-cells and purified. As a starting material, the L. reuteri Q1U8S3 gene previously cloned into a pET SUMO vector from Invitrogen was used. The produced protein will be a fusion protein containing a His6-tag, a SUMO-protein and the protein of interest. A nickel column in combination with a gel filtration column was used to purify the protein and after purification, crystallization experiments were set up using standardized kits.</p>

Cette thèse est organisé en trois chapitres: le premier chapitre traite de la naissance du daguerréotype et de sa propagation, de conditionnement, d'abord, à partir des besoins du progrès scientifique déterminés, pour une courte période, une plus grand diffusion des gravures de daguerréotype plutôt que ceux de calotype. D'où notre hypothèse d'un véritable art de la photographie a en effet pu commencer qu'avec la propagation de la procédure de Talbot , rendu public et mis au point par Blanquart Evrard.Le deuxième chapitre analyse le contexte philosophique contemporain à la diffusion des premières représentations photographiques.Cette œuvre se concentre, en particulier , sur la figure de Victor Cousin. Ce travail révèle en partie le climat historique et culturel dans lequel on va définir l'objet problématique de cette recherche. En fait , le beau de cette philosophe est une représentation vague de la nature qui, cependant, ne donnerait pas une relation directe avec les données des sens toujours présents.Le dernier chapitre conclut en examinant la dichotomie entre le beau et l’utile. La distinction est plus subtile qu'il n'y paraît à une première vue du traité: si les catégorisations traditionnelles parlaient de “arts utiles” et “beaux-arts”, Cousin garda seulement "utile" et "beau", cette position va permettre à tous les produits fabriqués la possibilité d'entrer dans le monde des arts, y compris la photographie. Dans la première partie, nous considérons un feuilletage Riemannien F sur une variété différentiable compacte connexe transversalement orientable m. Nous calculons le spectre de l'espace des adhérences des feuilles i. E. Le spectre basique et nous donnons le développement asymptotique de la trace du noyau de la chaleur basique. Nous appliquons le résultat aux variétés de satane. Dans la deuxième partie, nous considérons un feuilletage transversalement holomorphe F sur une variété différentiable M et U = (U I) I , I un recouvrement ouvert localement fini de m. Nous énonçons le problème additif de cousin basique. Soit O F le faisceau des germes de fonctions basiques holomorphes sur m. L'espace H 1 (U, O F) contient exactement les obstructions à la résolution du problème. Si le recouvrement u est acyclique alors H 1 (U, O F) = H 1 (M, O F). Lorsque H 1 (M, O F) = 0, nous appelons f un feuilletage de cousin. Nous donnons des méthodes générales de calcul de l'espace des obstructions, en particulier pour les revêtements feuilletés et les feuilletages suspension d'une représentation du groupe fondamental d'une variété dans le groupe des biholomorphismes d'une variété complexe. Daß Cousin heute weitgehend vergessen ist, liegt eben daran, daß sein Tun und Wirken als Philosoph eng mit der Bildungspolitik seiner Zeit verwoben ist. Daß unsere Lehrbücher der Philosophiegeschichte ihn lediglich anführen als einen, der das Studium der Philosophiegeschichte gefördert habe, ist ein dialektischer Rückschlag der von Cousin selbst ins Werk gesetzten Historisierung, denn Cousin hat schnell das Prestige des „großen\" Philosophen verloren, das - nach seinen eigenen Vorstellungen - Unvergeßlichkeit garantiert. Vermeren zeigt überzeugend, daß es einen Weg gibt, diesem Vergessen mit Erkenntnisgewinn entgegenzusteuern, eben auf dem Weg einer Intellektuellengeschichte.

Abstract:
This paper presents an analysis of the dubbed version of the film My cousin Vinny (1992, Jonathan Lynn, USA), with the aim of determining how American legal terms are translated into Italian. The film was chosen because of the presence of numerous courtroom scenes that offer the opportunity to analyse how the legal language used in a courtroom of the United States can be translated. In fact, this paper focuses on how translators faced the difficulties raised by the presence of elements of two different legal systems: the legal system of the United States has unique characteristics that had to be somehow conveyed in the Italian version of the film. Therefore, the first chapter attempts to give some basic information about the differences between the Italian and the US legal systems, in order to understand how the lack of correspondence between the two systems complicates even further the dubbing process. It briefly describes the main features of common law and civil law, and then focuses on the characteristics, of the Italian and the US judicial systems, relevant to this analysis. The analysis of legal language is presented in the second chapter. The first part of this chapter concerns the translation of specific legal terms and how the differences between the Italian and the US judicial systems influenced the translation. In the second part, the focus shift on the translation of fixed legal formulas typical of American courtrooms.

Abstract Coupons have been widely used for many years as a primary corrosion monitoring device. In order to be useful, the coupon must be placed in a representative location in the system to be monitored. Severe downhole corrosion problems in the Rangely Weber Sand Unit, Rangely, Colorado, resulted in an extensive coupon testing program. Downhole coupons were recommended because the surface corrosion coupon data had not been indicating a severely corrosive environment. The coupon holder designed for the program had to be easily wireline set and retrievable, allow multiple coupon placement for simultaneous testing, have the adaptability to be set anywhere in the injection string, be economical to manufacture and run, and be corrosion resistant itself to the downhole environment. This paper describes the downhole coupon holder that was designed for the Rangely Weber Sand Unit. It also discusses the variety of tests that were conducted using the new holder, (e.g., galvanic testing, bacteria evaluation, and stress corrosion cracking susceptibility).

Abstract Pipeline operators are becoming more dependent on coupons for demonstrating adequate cathodic protection as the use of multi-line corridors has increased. In such complex right-of-way configurations, the pipelines are often bonded together for cathodic protection purposes. The presence of widely varying coating qualities and current requirements means that protection levels measured during test post or close interval potential surveys are mixed potentials influenced by all the pipelines in the corridor. Targeted assessment of an individual pipeline therefore becomes much more complicated, particularly when a pipeline is newly constructed and is situated amongst legacy operating assets. To help account for this, coupons are heavily relied on to accurately assess protection levels on a specific pipeline. Literature and the NACE standard SP0104 indicate that correct interpretation of coupon measurements may require the use of non-metallic soil-access tubes and/or a nearby stationary reference electrode. In practice, it is not always possible to install soil-access tubes along with the coupons due to factors such as land use, coupon depth, etc. This paper considers the theoretical and experimental basis for the need for a soil-access tube or a close-coupled reference. The interpretation of coupon data for new pipelines is examined in light of coupon data recorded on a new transmission pipeline that shares a corridor with several older pipelines. Recommendations are provided.

Abstract Corrosion coupons are one of the most frequently used methods to measure the severity of corrosion in oil and gas pipelines. Typically, operators use weight loss coupons to determine rates of general corrosion and occasionally pitting. Extended analysis (EA) coupons are less frequently used but can provide additional information such as rate of pitting and the corrosion mechanism which are critical when evaluating the need for additional information or considering the most effective course for mitigation. Improper mitigation can result in wasted time, resources, or worsened corrosion rates in some instances; therefore, proper understanding of corrosion rates and mechanisms is a critical step in the corrosion management process. Examples of analysis methods that are frequently applied to EA coupons include optical profilometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (XRD), and biological characterization methods such as quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This paper discusses these different analysis methods and the significance of the data obtained and presents a case study where a mitigation plan was developed based in part on the active corrosion mechanism identified using EA coupons.

Abstract In this paper, a test protocol for the laboratory analysis of the coupon test stations (CTSs) exposed to alternating current (AC) interference from the adjacent power lines was discussed in detail. Corrosion of coupons from the CTSs are mainly due to AC interference, corrosive soil, or microbiological induced corrosion (MIC). This paper provides an overview of corrosion issues commonly experienced by coupons and presents specific case histories involving AC interference, corrosive soil, and MIC. During the laboratory analysis, coupons were examined visually and photographed, studied under stereo microscope, and the coupons were also examined in detail using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) in the as received condition and correspondingly after ultrasonic cleaning. The findings of the laboratory analysis are correlated with CTS historical data and relevant field inspection data to identify the actual cause of the corrosion of the CTSs. In this paper, we will introduce our AC corrosion detector and a description of the concept in a simplified form. Our proprietary sensor can identify the extent of magnetite on the CTSs. The sensor correlates electric current measurement with the quantity of a predetermined iron oxide in the test coupon to determine a proxy for the degree of alternating current interference corrosion in the metallic structure.

Abstract The use of access fitting for intrusive corrosion monitoring tools is a common practice in the Oil &amp; Gas industry; however, the Company has faced several difficulties including a recent incident during retrieval operations which has led to suspend, or significantly reduced the use of corrosion coupons and probes, decreasing the frequency of retrieval, and eliminating its use in new projects. In order to reduce the risk, it was decided to decrease 91% the use of corrosion coupons, hence suspending the retrieval activities in those locations. Therefore, more than 300 access fittings / locations were no longer required. These locations, un-attended, might result in dead legs (corrosion threat) which could create a possible leak path in the pipeline systems. In that sense, there was an urgent need to define a safe, efficient and permanent solution for the abandonment of the existing access fittings. Several options were reviewed, considering technical aspects as well as costs. The first option was to use a solid plug assembly with a high-pressure retaining cover; this was discarded due to possible creation of dead leg, thus needing further maintenance / monitoring and as such could not be considered as permanent solution. A second option was to carry out sectional replacement of the pipeline at the corrosion monitoring pit; this is a feasible alternative for pipelines with extended shutdown flexibility otherwise hot-tap &amp; stopple operation would be required for execution with a considerable high cost associated. For the third option, the Company worked with a third-party pipeline isolation specialist to develop an optimal solution which considered the design of a permanent abandonment plug compatible with the existing access fitting that could be installed while the pipeline is in operation with the available service tools. A procedure was developed for the trial of the abandonment plug system to capture the required installation steps and testing criteria (pass/fail). The trial for the abandonment plug system was successful and there is ongoing plan for the roll-out across the pipeline systems. This paper will cover the selected option, including design, factory acceptance test and field trial results.

Abstract Radioactive nuclear waste, which was generated during the production of nuclear materials, is safely stored in contained underground tanks and is being processed for long-term storage. A coupon corrosion rig (CCR) for monitoring was designed and used in a preliminary trial on a tank containing diluted low-level radioactive waste. Welded and standard flat coupons were exposed for ten months. The coupons were exposed in both the liquid waste and the air space above the waste. The evaluation consisted of visual examination and weight loss and pit depth measurements. Corrosion degradation was not significant for coupons in the waste. The corrosion in the air space was characterized by variable-depth degradation under adherent corrosion products. The coupon areas exposed at the air-waste interface had pits; the deepest measuring 6 mils. These results are consistent with those from previous laboratory coupon tests in simulated waste.

Abstract Coupons simulating the coating defects have been used to evaluate cathodic protection level of steel structures. This paper aims to provide requirements for coupon AC current density as affecting AC corrosion of cathodically protected steel pipelines. The field investigation into the polyethylene coated 400 mm diameter natural gas transmission pipeline paralleling a 25 kV AC transit system which operated at frequency of 50 Hz was carried out. The steel coupon was connected to this pipeline with the cathodic protection applied. The four parameters, that is, coupon on-potential, coupon instant-off potential, coupon DC current density, and coupon AC current density were acquired by using the new coupon technology with high data sampling rate of 0.1 ms and 16-bit. It was thought that the requirements to regard the coupon AC current density for a single period of commercial current frequency as affecting AC corrosion could be: 1) polarity reversal; 2) consistency with commercial current frequency; 3) small distortion factor of a waveform.

A Cathodic Protection (CP) coupon is a useful tool to evaluate the CP level of a buried structure; however, some issues have remained unresolved to date, such as CP coupon edge effects, coating effects, coupon orientations, base plate lateral width effects, etc. The aim of this project was to study eight specific CP coupon related issues using numerical modeling, lab testing and large-scale field-testing methods to develop a practical guideline for CP coupon selection and field application. Through this research, the roles played by soil resistivity and the main CP coupon design parameters affecting CP coupon performance have been established. Moreover, new CP coupon phenomena were also identified which may deepen our understanding of CP coupons.
