<p>The aim of this work was to determine if the protein Majastridin found in the proteobacterium Rhodobacter blasticus has a functional relative in the hypothetical protein Q1U8S3/ B3XNV1 found in Lactobacillus reuteri. To be able to study the protein, it was overexpressed in E. coli-cells and purified. As a starting material, the L. reuteri Q1U8S3 gene previously cloned into a pET SUMO vector from Invitrogen was used. The produced protein will be a fusion protein containing a His6-tag, a SUMO-protein and the protein of interest. A nickel column in combination with a gel filtration column was used to purify the protein and after purification, crystallization experiments were set up using standardized kits.</p>

Cette thèse est organisé en trois chapitres: le premier chapitre traite de la naissance du daguerréotype et de sa propagation, de conditionnement, d'abord, à partir des besoins du progrès scientifique déterminés, pour une courte période, une plus grand diffusion des gravures de daguerréotype plutôt que ceux de calotype. D'où notre hypothèse d'un véritable art de la photographie a en effet pu commencer qu'avec la propagation de la procédure de Talbot , rendu public et mis au point par Blanquart Evrard.Le deuxième chapitre analyse le contexte philosophique contemporain à la diffusion des premières représentations photographiques.Cette œuvre se concentre, en particulier , sur la figure de Victor Cousin. Ce travail révèle en partie le climat historique et culturel dans lequel on va définir l'objet problématique de cette recherche. En fait , le beau de cette philosophe est une représentation vague de la nature qui, cependant, ne donnerait pas une relation directe avec les données des sens toujours présents.Le dernier chapitre conclut en examinant la dichotomie entre le beau et l’utile. Nous calculons le spectre de l'espace des adhérences des feuilles i. E. Le spectre basique et nous donnons le développement asymptotique de la trace du noyau de la chaleur basique. Nous appliquons le résultat aux variétés de satane. Dans la deuxième partie, nous considérons un feuilletage transversalement holomorphe F sur une variété différentiable M et U = (U I) I , I un recouvrement ouvert localement fini de m. Nous énonçons le problème additif de cousin basique. Soit O F le faisceau des germes de fonctions basiques holomorphes sur m. L'espace H 1 (U, O F) contient exactement les obstructions à la résolution du problème. Si le recouvrement u est acyclique alors H 1 (U, O F) = H 1 (M, O F). Lorsque H 1 (M, O F) = 0, nous appelons f un feuilletage de cousin. Nous donnons des méthodes générales de calcul de l'espace des obstructions, en particulier pour les revêtements feuilletés et les feuilletages suspension d'une représentation du groupe fondamental d'une variété dans le groupe des biholomorphismes d'une variété complexe. Daß unsere Lehrbücher der Philosophiegeschichte ihn lediglich anführen als einen, der das Studium der Philosophiegeschichte gefördert habe, ist ein dialektischer Rückschlag der von Cousin selbst ins Werk gesetzten Historisierung, denn Cousin hat schnell das Prestige des „großen\" Philosophen verloren, das - nach seinen eigenen Vorstellungen - Unvergeßlichkeit garantiert. Vermeren zeigt überzeugend, daß es einen Weg gibt, diesem Vergessen mit Erkenntnisgewinn entgegenzusteuern, eben auf dem Weg einer Intellektuellengeschichte.

This paper presents an analysis of the dubbed version of the film My cousin Vinny (1992, Jonathan Lynn, USA), with the aim of determining how American legal terms are translated into Italian. The film was chosen because of the presence of numerous courtroom scenes that offer the opportunity to analyse how the legal language used in a courtroom of the United States can be translated. In fact, this paper focuses on how translators faced the difficulties raised by the presence of elements of two different legal systems: the legal system of the United States has unique characteristics that had to be somehow conveyed in the Italian version of the film.
Therefore, the first chapter attempts to give some basic information about the differences between the Italian and the US legal systems, in order to understand how the lack of correspondence between the two systems complicates even further the dubbing process. It briefly describes the main features of common law and civil law, and then focuses on the characteristics, of the Italian and the US judicial systems, relevant to this analysis.
The analysis of legal language is presented in the second chapter. The first part of this chapter concerns the translation of specific legal terms and how the differences between the Italian and the US judicial systems influenced the translation. In the second part, the focus shift on the translation of fixed legal formulas typical of American courtrooms.

Royer-Collard choisit le jeune Victor Cousin (né en 1792) pour le suppléer à la fin de 1815. Ce dernier donnera une première série de cours, jusqu'au milieu de l'année 1820. -l'on se demande comment interpréter cette naissance d'une "nouvelle philosophie française" : peut-on n'y voir qu'un évènement relevant de l'histoire des idées, voire de l'histoire politique ? Peut-on aborder les doctrines exposées en en étudiant à teneur, indépendamment du contexte historique ? COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR<br>Esta dissertação estuda o fenômeno da correlação positiva
entre o risco país e o risco cambial. A presença deste
fenômeno é nociva às economias, pois as torna mais
vulneráveis a choques recessivos. O trabalho busca,
primeiramente, identificar qual a extensão do fenômeno
separando uma amostra de 25 países em dois grupos: os que
apresentam correlação positiva entre o risco país e o
risco
cambial e os que não apresentam. Baseado nesta divisão,
em
seguida é feita uma investigação de quais seriam os
fatores
determinantes do fenômeno. Os resultados indicam que o
descasamento cambial e o baixo grau de aprofundamento
financeiro estão fortemente associados com a presença do
fenômeno.<br>This dissertation studies the positive correlation between
country and currency risks observed in some countries. The
presence of this phenomenon is harmful to the economies,
since it brings more vulnerability to recessive shocks.
The first aim of this paper is to identify the extension of
this phenomenon by separating a sample of 25 countries in
two groups: the one where the positive correlation is
observed and the one where it is not. Based on that that
taxonomy, it is implemented an investigation on what are
the factors responsible for the phenomenon. The results
show that exchange rate mismatch and underdeveloped
financial markets are strongly associated with the presence
of positive correlation between the two risks.

Genetic factors account for about half of Alzheimer<'>s Disease (AD) risk and only about a quarter of that heritability is accounted for by known variants. Family based approaches to understanding AD genetics may be an effective way to identify additional risk factors. Here we report the results of whole exome sequencing (WES) and analyses done on pairs of AD affected cousins from 19 families from the Utah Population Database (UPDB) with a statistical excess of AD risk. WES variants passing quality control were additionally filtered by population frequency (minor allele <<> 0.01) and concordance between cousin pairs, resulting in 564 variants shared by at least one pair of cousins. For each of these variants we conducted in depth annotations using Ingenuity Variant Analysis (IVA), Wellderly Data Allele Frequencies, and literature searches. To further aid in variant prioritization we analyzed each variant for association with Age at Onset of AD, AD Risk, CSF AB42, CSF Tau, CSF PTau and Rate of Disease Decline in data from the Alzheimer<'>s Disease Genetics Consortium (ADGC) and from the Knight Alzheimer<'>s disease research center. Statistical analyses were conducted using PLINK. Twelve variants (rs201665195, rs28933981, rs148294193, rs147599881, rs61729902, rs140129800, rs191804178, rs200290640, rs199752248, rs45541434, rs141402160 and rs140914494) in eight genes (ABCA7, TTR, PELI3, FCHO1, SNAP91, COX6A2, MUC16, PIDD1, SYT5 and NOTCH3) were prioritized using a clear pipeline of IVA filters and the additional analysis information. We propose that these genes and variants are the most interesting for follow-up based on current knowledge.This family-based approach to finding rare AD variants adds to a growing body of research suggesting a role for NOTCH3 in late-onset AD. This approach replicated two known AD risk variants and also implicated novel putative risk AD variants and genes. These results suggest that further application of this method of using pairs of cousins may result in additional insights into AD genetics and the ability to find novel rare, causal AD variants.

Sous l’angle de la poétique, la science des principes constitutifs des formes littéraires, l’objectif de notre étude consiste, avant tout, à revaloriser le champ de l’épopée au XIXe siècle en étudiant l’évolution thématique et structurelle du genre épique à la lumière de la théologie mystique. À partir d’une vingtaine d’œuvres sélectionnées au sein d’un corpus foisonnant (dont la plupart, injustement oubliées par la postérité, sont le fruit de minores), nous entendons démontrer que l’épopée du XIXe siècle, loin de se cantonner à la tradition classique des grands modèles totémiques issus de l’Antiquité, subit, au lendemain de la Révolution, ce que nous envisageons comme un changement de paradigme. En passant progressivement d’une épopée « héroïque », pour reprendre le mot d’Henry Corbin, à une épopée dite « mystique », influencée par la revalorisation des œuvres de Dante, Milton et Klopstock, la nouvelle triade romantique, l’épopée du XIXe siècle, censée structurer la société à partir d’un événement fondateur, devient presque exclusivement visionnaire en ce qu’elle déporte son attention de la Terre vers les Cieux, de la politique vers la métaphysique.Là se trouve tout le cœur de notre thèse dont le mouvement, nourri de la « relation critique » entre littérature et mystique, porte en germe l’avenir d’un genre désormais voué à la révélation eschatologique et à la réintégration de l’âme déchue. Au-delà de la philosophie idéaliste, il s’agira surtout de prouver que les auteurs de notre corpus, éduqués dans la plus pure tradition catéchétique et sensibles aux nouveaux courants occultes et illuministes qui travaillent la conscience romantique, font de l’épopée non plus une œuvre guerrière, centrée sur la mémoire historique des hauts faits nationaux, mais une épopée métaphysique qui puise dans les concepts mystiques pour éclairer son propre fonctionnement. Inscrit au cœur du renouveau des études mystiques en Europe depuis la fin du XXe siècle, notre sujet se concentre essentiellement sur la dialectique entre la mystique, traditionnellement spécifique et intimiste, et l’épopée, par définition générique et universelle, en approfondissant l’évolution, la transformation et les limites du genre à travers les trois voies définies par la théologie néo-platonicienne depuis le pseudo-Denys l'Aréopagite –purgative, illuminative et unitive – avant de parvenir à l’ultime apocatastase<br>From the perspective of poetics, the science of the principles of literary forms, the main goal of our study is to enhance the epic sphere in 19th century by studying the structural and thematic development of the heroic genre through the mystical theology. Working from some twenty rare pieces in an abundant corpus (most of them, unfairly forgotten by posterity, are the result of minores), we intend to prove that the epic of the 19thcentury, far from being confined to the classical tradition of the great totemic models from Antiquity, undergoes, after the Revolution, what we consider as a change of paradigm. Moving from a “heroic” epic, referring to Henry Corbin, to a so-called “mystical” epic, influenced by the revaluation of Dante, Milton and Klopstock’s works, the new romantic triad, the epic of the 19th century, supposed to organize society from a founding event, become exclusively prophetic by shifting its perspective from earth to heaven, from politics to metaphysics.Here is to be encountered the keystone of our dissertation, regarding the “critical relation” between literature and mysticism, which demonstrates the evolution of a genre henceforth dedicated to eschatological revelation and reintegration of the fallen soul. Beyond german idealism, we wish to emphasise that the authors of our corpus, educated in the purest catechetical tradition and affected by the new occult and illuminist currents, make the epic no longer a work of war, focused on the historical memory of national battles, but a mystagogic form that draws on mystical concepts to clarify its own running. Related to the revival of mystical studies in Europe since the late 20th century, our subject highlights the dialectic between mysticism, traditionally individual and intimate, and the epic, by global and universal definition, exploring the transformation and limits of the poetic form through the three ways defined by Neo-Platonic theology – purgative, illuminative and unitive– until the ultimate apocatastasis

Jean Cousin a suscité différentes formes de réception, révélatrices des enjeux discursifs des historiographes. De même, l'analyse critique des textes qui ont été produits sur l'Eva prima Pandora a fait émerger plusieurs problématiques inhérentes au processus de l'interprétation des œuvres d'art, au discours produit sur la peinture. À partir d'un contexte documentaire lacunaire, qui concerne autant le peintre que son tableau, les auteurs ont crée des fictions révélatrices de leur orientation méthodologique et des attentes de leur époque d'expression.Nous porterons donc un regard critique sur la construction mythique de l'image de l'artiste qui s'est opérée dans les différents textes consacrés à la vie et à l'œuvre de Jean Cousin. De même, à travers les propositions sémantiques qui ont été faites de la peinture, nous mettrons en évidence les présupposés théoriques et méthodologiques du discours produit par les interprètes, afin de montrer les limites de leur démarche. Partant de ce constat, prenant en compte les différentes pistes de réflexion récemment ouvertes par l'histoire de l'art, nous étudierons l'Eva prima Pandora, en portant notre attention sur le VOIR, sur le processus de création picturale, sur la nature des intentions de Jean Cousin alors qu'il peignait l'Eva prima Pandora.

The Galactic transient V1309 Sco was the result of a merger in a low-mass star system, while V838 Mon was thought to be a similar merger event from a more massive B-type progenitor. In this paper, we study a recent optical and infrared (IR) transient discovered in the nearby galaxy NGC4490 named NGC4490-OT2011 (NGC 4490-OT hereafter), which appeared similar to these merger events (unobscured progenitor, irregular multi-peaked light curve, increasingly red colour, similar optical spectrum, IR excess at late times), but which had a higher peak luminosity and longer duration in outburst. NGC4490-OT has less in common with the class of SN 2008S-like transients. A progenitor detected in pre-eruption Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images, combined with upper limits in the IR, requires a luminous and blue progenitor that has faded in late-time HST images. The same source was detected by Spitzer and ground-based data as a luminous IR (2-5 mu m) transient, indicating a transition to a self-obscured state qualitatively similar to the evolution seen in other stellar mergers and in luminous blue variables. The post-outburst dust-obscured source is too luminous and too warm at late times to be explained with an IR echo, suggesting that the object survived the event. The luminosity of the enshrouded IR source is similar to that of the progenitor. Compared to proposed merger events, the more massive progenitor of NGC4490-OT seems to extend a correlation between stellar mass and peak luminosity, and may suggest that both of these correlate with duration. We show that spectra of NGC4490-OT and V838 Mon also resemble light-echo spectra of eta Car, prompting us to speculate that eta Car may be an extreme extension of this phenomenon.

In 2007, I began a personal investigation to tell the story of my cousin, Michael Alford's (Mikey) incarceration. In 2000, he was convicted of aggravated kidnapping and received a sentence of twenty years in prison. While Mikey serves his sentence at Hill Correctional Center in Galesburg, Illinois, I began talking to members of my family to chronicle Mikey's life and follow the path that led him to prison. During the exploration of Mikey's past, unexpected stories were uncovered, which led me to the crumbling relationships within our multiracial, estranged family, our relatives grappling with the issues that lie within a family having an incarcerated relative, and Mikey's correlation to societal stigmas toward African-American males. I was forced to confront my private reservations, of anger and betrayal, toward particular family members and specifically, my non-existing relationship with Mikey. This documentary became an exploration into familial and societal relationships between me, the filmmaker, who hid behind the camera to get a story and my cousin, Mikey, who is behind bars. As my journey came to an end, I realized that even though my cousin was isolated in prison he was able to guide me back to a family with whom I had a conflicted past, and it also led me to a self-realization that has changed me forever.

Il s’agit de montrer comment la question de l’émancipation intellectuelle par la philosophie et celle de l’émancipation politique se nouent de façon particulière dans le rapport qu’une philosophie entretient avec l’histoire de la philosophie. En effet, la constitution d’un dogme de la pensée philosophique et l’assujettissement de la philosophie à la politique vont de pair, et ils sont tous deux à l’origine de la discipline philosophique au dix-neuvième siècle en France. La philosophie se construit alors selon un double rapport : à la tradition philosophique et au pouvoir politique. Or les deux termes de ce rapport se situent à leur tour dans une relation de dépendance. Selon la conception politique qu’il s’agit de défendre ou de légitimer, l’usage de l’histoire de la philosophie est très différent. Dès lors, il apparaît comme un révélateur de la finalité assignée à la philosophie dans l’antagonisme qui oppose Victor Cousin et Pierre Leroux. On trouve chez ces auteurs deux types d’instrumentalisation de l’histoire de la philosophie, subordonnée à des motifs politiques. Mais si la politique est le « corollaire de la philosophie » comme l’affirme Leroux, cela peut s’entendre de différentes manières : nous tenterons de dégager en quels sens cette affirmation peut être comprise et dans quelle mesure la tradition philosophique est mise au service des différentes finalités politiques possibles de la philosophie<br>This work intends to point out how the issues of intellectual emancipation and of political emancipation are linked in a particular way through the relationship that a philosophical doctrine has with the history of philosophy. Indeed, the constitution of a philosophical dogma and the submission of philosophy to politics go together and have both been at the origin of the institutionalization of philosophy as a school and university discipline. In this context, philosophy is built within a double relationship : to philosophical tradition on the one hand and to political power on the other hand. In addition, the two terms of the relationship are subordonnated to one another. According to the particular political conception one intends to defend and legitimate, the utilization of the history of philosophy does not answer the same kind of issues : thus it appears as a revealing element in the antagonism that opposes Victor Cousin to Pierre Leroux. We find two different ways of instrumentalizating the history of philosophy in these authors’ doctrines, subordinated to political motivations. On a l'habitude de reconnaître pour seule origine à l'hégélianisme en France les leçons, par ailleurs très controversées de Victor Cousin. Ce travail tente de montrer que la réception française de la philosophie hégélienne passe parfois par des chemins peu emprunter. Il s' agit donc de tracer un itinéraire de l'hégélianisme depuis 1830 jusqu'à 1870 au travers des oeuvres d'Eugène Lerminier, de Joseph Willm et d'Emile Beaussire. Ces auteurs, quoique méconnus aujourd'hui, ont, en leur temps, su produire un usage de la philosophie hégélienne qui, chacun à sa façon, trouve aujourd'hui encore un échos remarquable. Ce travail tente donc à la fois de présenter dans ce que leur oeuvre présente d'important et d'original vis-à-vis de l'introduction de la pensée hégélienne en France; mais aussi, au travers de ces exemple, cette thèse montre que la théorie de la réception ne doit pas se figer dans une méthode univoque si elle veux embrasser pleinement les champs d'investigation qui s'offrent à elle

Étant donnés une surface de Kato minimale S, D le diviseur maximal de S formé des courbes rationnelles de S et ϖ : Š ͢ S le revêtement universel de S, on démontre que Š \ϖ-1 (D) est une variété de Stein. Les variétés LVMB sont la seconde classe de variétés non kählériennes étudiées. Ces variétés complexes sont obtenues en quotientant un ouvert U de Pn par un sous-groupe de Lie fermé G de (C*)n de dimension m. On reformule ce procédé en remplaçant U par la donnée d'un sous-éventail de celui de Pn et G par un sous-espace vectoriel de Rn convenable. On construit ensuite de nouvelles variétés complexes compactes non kählériennes en combinant une méthode due à Sankaran et celle donnant les variétés LVMB. Sankaran considère un ouvert U d'une variété torique dont le quotient par un groupe W discret est une variété compacte. Ici, on munit une certaine variété torique Y de l'action d'un sous-groupe de Lie G de (C*)n de sorte que le quotient X de Y par G soit une variété, puis on quotiente un ouvert de X par un groupe discret W analogue à celui de Sankaran.Enfin, on étudie les variétés OT, une autre classe de variétés non kählériennes, dont on démontre que leur dimension algébrique est nulle. We first look at the class of Kato surfaces. Given a minimal Kato surface S, D the divisor consisting of all rational curves of S and ϖ : Š ͢ S the universal covering of S, we show that Š \ϖ-1 (D) is a Stein manifold. LVMB manifolds are the second class of non-Kähler manifolds that we study here. These complex compact manifolds are obtained as quotient of an open subset U of Pn by a closed Lie subgroup G of (C*)n of dimension m. We reformulate this procedure by replacing U by the choice of a subfan of the fan of Pn and G by a suitable vector subspace of R^{n}. We then build new complex compact non Kähler manifolds by combining a method of Sankaran and the one giving LVMB manifolds. Sankaran considers an open subset U of a toric manifold whose quotient by a discrete group W is a compact manifold. Here, we endow some toric manifold Y with the action of a Lie subgroup G of (C^{*})^{n} such that the quotient X of Y by G is a manifold, and we take the quotient of an open subset of X by a discrete group W similar to Sankaran's one.Finally, we consider OT manifolds, another class of non-Kähler manifolds, and we show that their algebraic dimension is 0. L'objectif de cette thèse est de mettre en évidence l'influence des types d'occupation du sol sur la qualité physico-chimique des eaux d'écoulement en contexte de déprise agricole en l'absence de précipitations acides. A l'échelle de quatre petits versants forestiers granitiques, la substitution des essences feuillues par des essences de reboisement résineuses a pour conséquence une modification des cycles du phosphore, des matières en suspension et du carbone organique dissous. De plus, un traçage isotopique naturel 13C montre que la litière est la source principale de COD exportée dans les eaux des ruisseaux. A l'échelle du bassin versant rural du Cousin, une modélisation spatialisée, sous Systèmes d'Information Géographique (SIG) des flux hydrochimiques exportés à l'exutoire d'une vingtaine de sous bassins versants, est établie à partir (i) d'un bilan hydrologique basé sur un bilan hydrique simple et (ii) d'une paramétrisation en fonction des paramètres d'état de surface<br>The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the influence of land use on chemical quality of streamwater. In four forested granitic catchments, the substitution of broad-leaved trees by coniferous species leads to a modification of various elementary cycles : phosphorus, suspended matter and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Thus, a natural isotopic tracing shows that the litter is the main source of DOC exported in stream water. This thesis aims to understand the sociocultural aspects of the practice of consanguinity and the implications for healthcare. Consanguinity refers to intra-familial marriage and is commonly used to refer to cousin marriage. While consanguinity remains a global phenomenon, in the recent past, it has mostly been associated with non-Western populations, and has become a taboo in Western culture. Consanguinity is linked with negative health outcomes, mostly due to genetic disorders, although the extent of this link remains debatable. In the UK, consanguinity is linked mostly with the Pakistani community, which also have an overrepresentation of children with genetic disorders. In Luton, local health reports have suggested that consanguinity in the large Pakistani community plays a role in increased infant deaths. This makes Luton and the local Pakistani community, ideally placed for understanding the practice of consanguinity and the implications for healthcare. This thesis is conceptually grounded within a constructionist approach to understanding consanguinity with a critical analysis based on theories of discourse and power and knowledge. A qualitative research design was employed using an instrumental case study approach which focused on understanding consanguinity through Luton’s Pakistani community. Three main sample groups were selected, members of the Pakistani community who are not married to their cousins and are defined as lay members in this research, members of the Pakistani community in consanguineous marriages, and local service providers (primary and secondary care).

Pourtant l'un et l'autre ont contribué de manière particulièrement efficace, comme penseurs puis comme hommes politiques au rétablissement de l'université française et des hautes études. Ils ont également, l'un et l'autre, joue un rôle majeur dans la construction de l'idée d'instruction publique. Guizot, par ses études historiques, sa théorie de la civilisation et de la barbarie et sa réflexion sur le rapport de la religion avec la pensée rationnelle a apporté une contribution importante au développement du rationalisme français. En outre, ses réflexions sur l'éducation resteront une source d'inspiration pour les réformateurs de la troisième république. Victor Cousin, quant à lui, réinstalle l'enseignement philosophique dans l'enseignement secondaire et supérieur, introduit en France la philosophie allemande et rétablit les études cartésiennes. Sa propre doctrine, l'éclectisme, reste une doctrine puissante et, sans doute, incontournable. Chez lui aussi se trouve une doctrine de l'éducation et de l'instruction publique<br>François Guizot and Victor Cousin are two authors particularly illtreated. Erik Satie fut toujours considéré comme un personnage énigmatique dans le monde musical français au tournant du siècle dernier. Sa personnalité marginale et ses œuvres dépouillées aux titres étranges ont maintes fois suscité questionnements et polémique. En 1917, Erik Satie écrivit une œuvre qui ne ressembla aucunement au répertoire antérieur du compositeur. Socrate, qui fut représenté publiquement pour la première fois en janvier 1920 à la Société Nationale de Paris, laissa le public et la critique perplexe et mitigé. Qu’avait donc de si particulier cette œuvre qui, d’un côté, passa pour une blague mais qui, pour certains dont le compositeur lui-même, fut considérée comme une manifestation pure de sagesse et de sincérité ?
Socrate fut conçu au même moment où Satie entretenait des liens étroits avec le monde cubiste. Pablo Picasso et Georges Braque furent désormais les maîtres d’un courant artistique qui allait révolutionner le monde artistique. De concert avec les valeurs avant-gardistes prônées par Erik Satie, les cubistes cherchèrent à bousculer les attentes du public en modifiant l’approche visuelle de manière à stimuler les différentes perceptions sensorielles. Avec le ballet Parade, représenté en mai 1917, le compositeur collabora avec Picasso et ceci eût grandement influencé son style musical puisqu’il employa des techniques se rapprochant grandement du cubisme. Comme le soutient Daniel Albright, Satie trouva dans le cubisme son analogue artistique. Selon moi, outre Parade, Erik Satie bénéficiera de l’esthétique cubiste pour développer son œuvre Socrate.
Cette thèse se concentre sur la signification de l’œuvre Socrate, plus particulièrement comment celle-ci pourrait représenter un autoportrait d’Erik Satie. De surcroît, elle examine comment cette représentation est camouflée derrière des méthodes cubistes traduites musicalement. La thèse s’appuie sur une littérature variée portant sur divers sujets relatant Socrate, dont la biographie du compositeur et sa relation avec des réseaux artistiques, intellectuels et sociaux. Cette thèse est la première étude d’envergure à suggérer une possibilité d’autoportrait cubiste musical puisque peu d’auteurs se sont attardés à résoudre cette problématique. Cette thèse décrit comment Socrate est une manifestation personnelle de sincérité et d’humilité d’un compositeur qui, persécuté tout au long de sa vie, se dévoila aux yeux de tous par le recours à cette figure emblématique de l’histoire : Socrate.

Par conséquent, s'il lit les philosophes (comme Hobbes par exemple), sa philosophie au sens strict est contenue dans ses œuvres, principalement ses romans : nulle part ailleurs. Son propos n'est donc en aucune façon un propos d'"idéologue", soit au sens de l'"idéologie" de Destutt de Tracy, soit au sens faible dérivé de certaines œuvres de jeunesse de Marx, écrites en collaboration avec Engels comme la sainte-famille ou l'idéologie allemande par exemple. The increasing willingness of historians to enlarge the notion of philosophy in both its disciplinary and historical definition seems to be in agreement with a similar disposition of contemporary philosophers. As we can learn from Michael Albrecht''s and Patrice Vermeren''s books, a critical appreciation of eclecticism throws light both on the conditions of contemporary philosophizing and on the politics of philosophy in the modern age.

L'histoire kantienne de la raison pure, injustement dédaignée, repose sur les concepts fondamentaux du criticisme, structure maint chapitre des trois Critiques, et annonce la paix philosophique perpétuelle dont est porteur le criticisme. Les Leçons de Hegel ne sont ni un résumé empirique ni une histoire biaisée de la philosophie : fondées sur la Logique et la Phénoménologie, elles mettent au jour la dialectique interne des systèmes. La classification de Renouvier n'est pas, comme on le dit parfois, a posteriori, mais repose au contraire sur le jeu a priori d'une table des catégories et d'une théorie de la contradiction. Approximation theory is a fundamental tool in order to study the representation theory of a ring R. Roughly speaking, it consists in determining suitable additive or abelian subcategories of the whole module category Mod-R with nice enough functorial properties. For example, torsion theory is a well suited incarnation of approximation theory. Of course, such an idea has been generalised to the additive setting itself, so that both Mod-R and other interesting categories related with R may be linked functorially. By the seminal work of Beilinson, Bernstein and Deligne (1982), the derived category of the ring turns out to admit useful torsion theories, called t-structures: they are pairs of full subcategories of D(R) whose intersection, called the heart, is always an abelian category. The so-called standard t-structure of D(R) has as its heart the module category Mod-R itself. Since then a lot of results devoted to the module theoretic characterisation of the hearts have been achieved, providing evidence of the usefulness of the t-structures in the representation theory of R. In 2020, following a research line promoted by many other authors, Saorin and Stovicek proved that the heart of any compactly generated t-structure is always a locally finitely presented Grothendieck categories (actually, this is true for any t-structure in a triangulated category with coproducts). Essentially, this means that the hearts of D(R) come equipped with a finiteness condition miming that one valid in Mod-R. In the present thesis we tackle the problem of characterising when the hearts of certain compactly generated t-structures of a commutative ring are even locally coherent. In this commutative context, after the works of Neeman and Alonso, Jeremias and Saorin, compactly generated t-structures turned out to be very interesting over a noetherian ring, for they are in bijection with the Thomason filtrations of the prime spectrum. In other words, they are classified by geometric objects, moreover their constituent subcategories have a precise cohomological description. However, if the ascending chain condition lacks, such classification is somehow partial, though provided by Hrbek. The crucial point is that the constituents of the t-structures have a different description w.r.t. that available in the noetherian setting, yet if one copies the latter for an arbitrary ring still obtains a t-structure, but it is not clear whether it must be compactly generated. Consequently, pursuing the study of the local coherence of the hearts given by a Thomason filtration, we ended by considering two t-structures. Our technique in order to face the lack of the ascending chain condition relies on a further approximation of the hearts by means of suitable torsion theories. The main results of the thesis are the following: we prove that for the so-called weakly bounded below Thomason filtrations the two t-structures have the same heart (therefore it is always locally finitely presented), and we show that they coincide if and only they are both compactly generated. Moreover, we achieve a complete characterisation of the local coherence for the hearts of the Thomason filtrations of finite length.

The Alan Cousins Telescope is a 0.75-m automatic photoelectric telescope situated at the South African Astronomical Observatory, in Sutherland. The telescope was designed and built to execute a range of photometry programmes, but is used mainly for the long-term monitoring of variable stars. In addition, there is the potential for target-of-opportunity observations of unanticipated events, such as gamma ray bursts, and anticipated events such as occultations. Ultimately the telescope is intended to be a fully robotic telescope with limited operational support needs. Some advance toward this goal has been made by a full hardware interface to allow queue executions of observations. The next phase is the implementation of an automated scheduler that will generate a queue of valid observations for each night of observation. Queue scheduling algorithms are widely used in astronomy and the aim of this dissertation is to present a strawman scheduler that will generate the nightly observation queue. The main design of the scheduler is based on a merit-based system implemented at the STELLA robotic observatory, paired with the scheduling algorithms used by SOFIA. The main drawback of the telescope is that it does not currently accommodate dynamically changing weather conditions. As a consequence, the main scheduling constraints are observation parameters, instrument ability, and for monitoring type observations, observation time window constraints.

Their management is one of the key conservation challenges that will have to be addressed in the next few decades. The study of real invasions and their management in natural ecosystems provides an opportunity to gain important information on theoretical and applied aspects of biological invasions.
This project focuses on the broader ecological context of invasive ant management in an ecologically sensitive island habitat. The thesis has three main components: 1) assessing the role of the invasive ant Pheidole megacephala in the ecosystem and evaluating its threat to the system, 2) evaluating a low-impact management program for the ant, and 3) using a community-level approach to assess ecosystem response to ant removal.
The ant occupied almost 30% of the island‘s total land area and reached extremely high densities in some areas. The ant was associated with exotic hemipteran scale insects through trophobiotic mutualisms that facilitated high ant and hemipteran abundances. The highly destructive scale insect Pulvinaria urbicola was among the hemipterans that benefited from ant attendance. High levels of hemipteran feeding resulted in dieback of functionally important and threatened native Pisonia trees, which represented a significant threat to the forest ecosystem.
A management program was initiated in response to this threat, consisting of baiting with selective hydramethylnon-based bait delivered in bait stations, accompanied by detailed pre-and post-baiting monitoring. The method was highly effective at suppressing the ants, whilst preventing bait uptake by non-target organisms. It was also cost-effective and adaptable to ant density in the field, but was only effective over short distances. The method may be applicable to other sensitive environments with similar challenges. After ant control, the ant-scale mutualism was decoupled and the Pu. urbicola population collapsed. There were variable responses in different taxa to the removal of these highly abundant exotic species, the most important of which was the recovery in Pisonia trees. Shoot condition and foliage density improved and there was a decrease in sooty mold. Herbivory on Pisonia increased due to recovery of native canopy herbivores, but the overall impact was far less than that of the exotic hemipterans.
Soil surface arthropods, a group that may have been vulnerable to the treatment method, were unaffected by baiting. Instead, they increased significantly after ant removal, confirming the ant‘s impact on other arthropods. Other ant diversity and non-ant arthropod abundance increased post-baiting, including the endemic ant Pheidole flavens farquharensis and some functionally important insects such as the Indian cockroach.
Natural enemies that interacted predictably with the mutualists were influenced by management. Predators of hemipterans increased significantly after ant removal and were instrumental in the scale population collapse, whereas parasitoids of hemipterans that benefited from the mutualism declined. Additionally, groups that were unrelated to the mutualism were indirectly influenced by management. The natural enemy assemblage as a whole showed recovery to pre-invasion conditions.
The study shows how widely interconnected and influential the ant was in the ecosystem. It highlights the threat of the species in natural systems as well as the complex responses following invasive ant removal. Yet, it also demonstrates the potential to safely and effectively manage the species, thereby raising the opportunity for ecosystem recovery.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Indringerspesies is van die belangrikste globale bedreigings vir natuurbewaring. Hulle bestuur is van die grootste bewaringsuitdagings wat in die volgende paar dekades aangespreek moet word. Die studie van werklike invalle en hul bestuur in natuurlike ekosisteme bied 'n geleentheid om belangrike inligting te verkry oor teoretiese en toegepaste aspekte van biologiese indringing.
Hierdie projek fokus op die breër ekologiese konteks van uitheemse mier bestuur in 'n ekologies sensitiewe eiland habitat. Die tesis het drie hoofkomponente: 1) die beoordeling van die rol van die indringer mier Pheidole megacephala in die ekosisteem en evaluering van sy bedreiging vir die sisteem, 2) die evaluering van 'n lae-impak bestuursprogram vir die mier, en 3) die gebruik van 'n gemeenskaps-vlak benadering om ekosisteem reaksie op mierverwydering te assesseer.

‗n Bestuursprogram is geïmplimenteer as gevolg van hierdie bedreiging, wat bestaan het uit selektiewe hidrametielnoon-gebaseerde lokaas wat in die veld geplaas is in lokaashouers, vergesel deur intensiewe monitering voor en na lokaasplasing. Die metode was hoogs effektief in die onderdrukking van die miere en het lokaasinname deur nie-teiken organismes verhoed. Dit was ook koste-effektief en aanpasbaar volgens mierdigtheid in die veld, maar was slegs effektief oor kort afstande. Die metode mag van toepassing wees in ander sensitiewe omgewings met soortgelyke uitdagings.
Na mierbeheer is die mier-dopluis mutualisme ontkoppel en die Pu. urbicola bevolking het drasties verminder. Daar was verskillende reaksies in verskillende taxa tot die verwydering van die oorvloedryke eksotiese spesies, maar die belangrikste reaksie was die herstel van Pisonia bome. Spruittoestand en blaardigtheid het verbeter en daar was ʼn afname in roetskimmel. Herbivorie op Pisonia het toegeneem as gevolg van ʼn herstel in inheemse herbivore, maar die algehele impak was veel minder as dié van die eksotiese dopluis.
Grondoppervlak gelidpotiges, 'n groep wat kwesbaar kon wees vir die behandelingsmetode, was onaangeraak deur die lokaas, maar het beduidend na mierverwydering vermeerder. Mierdiversiteit het vermeerder en die Seychelles endemiese mier Pheidole flavens farquharensis is hervestig. Ander gelidpotiges het ook vermeerder, insluitend funksioneel belangrike spesies soos die Indiese kakkerlak.
Natuurlike vyande wat geassosieer was met die mutualiste is beïnvloed deur die mierbestuur. Predatore van dopluis het beduidend toegeneem na mierverwydering en was hoogs betrokke by die vermindering van dopluis, terwyl parasiete van dopluis, wat voordeel getrek het uit die mutualisme, gedaal het. It places this rich text in the context of the first half of the twentieth century and demonstrates its value as a source for Irish, Indian, gender, and global history. It investigates how the Cousinses represent their efforts to create and maintain a companionate marriage over a lifetime, depict their work as activists for women’s suffrage, Indian nationalism, educational reform, and other causes, and recount the impact of cross-cultural encounters on their cosmopolitan lives. We Two Together provides insight into the lives of two extraordinary individuals as they witnessed and participated in several key social and political movements in Ireland and India. In bringing attention to this book, I hope that other historians will make use of it and that librarians will preserve the rare copies in their possession.

Contrairement à une idée reçue, l'usage de la perspective ne révèle pas d'abord des préoccupations mathématiques de la part des artistes: elle apporte une solution aux problèmes empiriques de disposition des prototypes. Purpose - In 2009, U.S. coupons set a new record of 367 billion coupons distributed. Yet,
while coupon distribution is on the rise, redemption rates remain below 1%. This article
shows how recognizing context variables, such as proximity, weather, part of town and
financial incentives interplay to determine a coupon campaigns' success.
Design/methodology/approach - The paper reports an empirical study conducted in cooperation
with a restaurant chain: 9.880 Subway coupons were distributed under different
experimental context conditions. Redemption behavior was analyzed with the help of logistic
regressions.
Findings - We found that even though proximity drives coupon redemption, city center
campaigns seem to be much more sensitive to distance than suburban areas. The further away
the distribution place from the restaurant the less does the amount of monetary incentive
determine the motivation to redeem.
Practical implications - When designing a coupon campaign for a company, coupon
distribution should not follow a 'one-is-good-for-all-strategy' even for one marketer within
one product category. Instead each coupon strategy should carefully consider contextual
influence.
Originality - This article is the first to our knowledge that systematically investigates the
impact of context variables on coupon redemption. We focus on context variables that
electronic marketing channels will be able to easily incorporate into personalized mobile
marketing campaigns.

Resumo: Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo analisar a ação de nobres portugueses que migraram para o noroeste africano durante o século XV, ficando em constante conflito militar e ideológico com os muçulmanos que ali habitavam. O estudo procurou se inserir no debate sobre os móveis do expansionismo ultramarino português, através da correlação de fortalecimento da autonomia régia na península ibérica e do interesse de nobres ascenderem social e politicamente com a permanência em região de fronteira. Seguiu-se como ordenamento teórico as concepções de Cultura e Poder, entendidas como apropriadas para a nterpretação da documentação, especialmente no que se refere à significação cultural de estratégias políticas. Com a análise da documentação cronística, classificada como historiográfica, o estudo procurou compreender as motivações políticas para a composição, uma vez que ela foi escrita com a diferença no relatado de quatro décadas. Foi realizada análise da forma como o cronista elaborou sua redação, assim como os objetivos projetados com tal texto. Localizaram-se os principais argumentos retóricos que conferiram ao texto a identificação no gênero historiográfico, como o estilo plano, a sequência cronológica e rováveis origens de seus dados. Acredita-se que seu texto tenha sido bem recebido, por atender as principais expectativas daquele estilo textual, qual seja, a ideia de preservação da memória de feitos ilustres. Posteriormente, a pesquisa analisou alguns casos descritos, buscando com isso compreender o significado esperado ao público destinado. Do conjunto de descrições observadas, notou-se a existência de vários grupos e interesses, sendo de conformações heterogêneas. Teve-se a prioridade de analisar os casos em que a evocação de qualificativos positivos por parte dos cristãos não fosse tão evidente, para caracterizar o significado do dissonante em contraste. Chegou-se a conclusão de que tais casos expressam o confronto entre expectativas e aspirações dessincronizadas, mas se sobrepondo aquelas de virtudes e gestos congruentes com os projetos de permanência na localidade africana. Desta forma, uma estratigrafia social foi identificada, através da percepção do que cada grupo via de si e dos demais, configurando um mosaico de interesses. Foi entendida a hierarquia da sociedade política observada, que se definia pela conjunção de práticas, serviço, sangue, virtudes e ordem. Desta forma, a pesquisa aqui apresentada visou contemplar o aspecto personalista das relações políticas no período tardo-medieval, procurando analisar as ações nobiliárquicas imersas em rgumentos ideológicos de defesa da fé cristã e da cavalaria.

For large retailers with extensive product offerings, learning customer preferences can be challenging due to relatively short purchase histories of most customers. To alleviate the dearth of data, we propose exploiting similarities among products and among customers to reduce problem dimensions. We also propose that retailers use personalized offers not only to maximize expected profit, but to actively learn their customers' preferences. An offer that does not maximize expected profit given current information may still provide valuable insights about customer preferences. This information enables more profitable coupon allocation and higher profits in the long run. Le rôle du noyaux de la base dans le contrôle moteur reste une question ouverte. Nous avons conçu une tâche motrice contrôlée dite « start-stop » chez la souris, permettant de quantifier les paramètres cinématiques associés à l'action. Les enregistrements extracellulaires ont démontré que notre tâche recrute 8 classes différentes de neurones dans le striatum. Le groupe « quoi » était composé des neurones « Beginning » et « End », activés au début ou à la fin de la séquence motrice, respectivement. Le groupe « comment » était composé des neurones « Running », « Onset » et « Offset » qui représentaient l'ensemble de l'exécution de la séquence motrice et étaient corrélées aux performances de vitesse. Nous avons aussi signalé la présence de les cellules « Immobility » activées pendant l'immobilité. La comparaison des performances au cours d’essais réussis par rapport à des mouvements spontanés a montré que la fraction des différentes classes de neurones striataux reste stable. Cependant, la fraction de cellules modulant leur activité en fonction de la séquence était fortement diminuée dans les mouvements spontanés par rapport aux essais réussis, et l'activité des cellules « Running » étaient moins corrélées avec la vitesse et la durée de la course de l'animal. Nos données sont cohérentes avec un modèle de fonctionnement des ganglions de la base dans lequel l'activité striatale est organisée d'une manière temporellement précise pour initier, maintenir et mettre fin à l'activité des séquences motrices. We designed a well-controlled start-stop running paradigm for mice, that enabled to quantify the kinematic parameters associated with motor execution. Extracellular recordings demonstrated that our task massively recruited 8 different functional striatal classes that modulated their activity at distinct phases of the sequential action and immobility. The “what” group comprised Beginning and End neurons which were specifically tuned at the beginning or at the end of the motor sequence, respectively. The “how” group was the most representative and comprised Running, Onset and Offset cells which, cooperatively represented the entire execution of the motor sequence and were well correlated with speed performance. Strikingly, we also reported the presence of the Immobility cells that specifically fired during immobility periods. Comparison of performances during good trials versus spontaneous runs showed that the fraction of the different striatal classes remained stable. However, the fraction of cells with significant sequence-related modulation was prominently decreased in spontaneous compared to good trial runs, and the activity of the Running cells was less correlated with animal's running speed and duration. Our data are consistent with a basal ganglia model where striatal activity is coordinately organized in a temporally precise manner to initiate, maintain and terminate motor sequences. Ongoing experiments with optogenetics techniques (developed during this thesis) will confirm inferred causal relationships of striatal activity to specific motor implementations

This thesis explores the relationship between kinship networks and Elizabethan politics. Elizabeth I’s Carey cousins, part of the larger Boleyn kinship network, provide the case study. Serving her through three generations dating from before her ascension to her death, Elizabeth enjoyed the benefits and tribulations of the constant presence of her extended family. Extending Elton’s ‘points of contact’ model to include not only court, privy council and parliament but also military and foreign service, allows analysis of the role of kinship networks in Elizabethan government. The gender inclusive nature of kinship networks demonstrates that women participated more fully in the political landscape than has hitherto been accepted. The Carey presence across the extended model provided stability and served as a bulwark against the factionalism so often assumed to have been a leading characteristic of the Elizabethan court. The Careys entered the family business of politics and government and kept Elizabeth within a family context thereby moderating the image of the solitary female ruler Gloriana. This work is divided into four main sections. After a discussion of the methodological issues and a review of the literature, chapter three analyses the value of kinship networks, the wider royal and non-royal relations and introduces the first generation of Careys including their relationships with Elizabeth before 1558. Chapter four begins with Elizabeth’s accession in 1558, her sense of family and the initial placement of Carey cousins in the new government. Chapters five and six place the family within an extended ‘points of contact’ model. Chapter seven juxtaposes a dynastic chronology, a key methodological approach for analyzing family participation in political events, in this case the arrival of Mary Queen of Scots in England. The thesis ends with the conclusion that the family was the essential political unit of the late Tudor period and that consequently men and women were both active pursuing dynastic ambitions and therefore political ambitions. The Careys, as a prominent dynasty, also benefitted from their consanguineal relationship with the queen herself placing them at the centre of the Elizabethan political scene. Extensive appendices provide reference tables of Elizabethan relatives both royal and non-royal, the Careys specifically, their participation in the various ‘points of contact’ model and a sample chronology. Also included are transcriptions of letters written by women of the Carey family illustrating their use of kinship in shaping the political landscape.

Introduction
Seabird life history strategies are often characterised
by high adult survival, delayed maturity at breeding, low
clutch sizes and variable reproductive output (Schaffner
1990, Bowler et al. 2002, Hockey and Wilson 2003,
Ramos et al. 2005). At low latitudes seabirds have small
clutches, large eggs and long incubation and fledging
periods (Hockey and Wilson 2003), and clutch size has
been related to food availability and predation risk (Shea
and Ricklefs 1996).
Primary production in tropical marine ecosystems is
generally considered to be low and seasonal, and food
may be scarce, especially at oceanic islands (Hockey
and Wilson 2003). Avian predators on small islands are
generally few, but predators may be attracted to seabird
eggs and chicks when large numbers of seabirds are
breeding at high densities (Schaffner 1991, Hockey and
Wilson 2003). Although most tropical islands are free
of large indigenous mammalian predators, predation
by smaller terrestrial predators like crabs and skinks
occurs (Schaffner 1991, Ramos et al. 2005). Intra- and
interspecific competition between breeding birds may
also lower breeding success (Bowler et al. 2002, Ramos
et al. 2005).
Cousine Island is one of the smallest islands in the
Seychelles archipelago. Seven tropical seabirds breed at
the island; two of the least common are the White Tern
Gygis alba and the White-tailed Tropicbird Phaethon
lepturus. An estimated 1 000–1 500 pairs of White Terns
and 450–850 pairs of White-tailed Tropicbirds breed on this
island (Skerret et al. 2001). White Terns are tree-nesting
birds that lay a single egg on an exposed fork or in an
artificial structure, whereas White-tailed Tropicbirds
are ground nesters that breed in a shady and sheltered
crevice (Schaffner 1991, del Hoyo et al. 1996, Bowler
and Pillay 2000). The incubation period of White Terns is
34–36 d (five weeks) and the nestling period 68 d (seven
weeks), whereas the incubation period of the White-tailed
Tropicbird is 40–42 d (six weeks) and the nestling period
77–85 d or 11–12 weeks (del Hoyo et al. 1996, Higgins
and Davies 1996). Both species exhibit life-history traits
specific to tropical island breeding. Each species has a
clutch size of one and nesting success is generally low,
from 30–50% for White-tailed Tropicbirds (Schaffner 1991,
Ramos and Pacheco 2003) and 29–40% for White Terns
(Vanderwerf 2003).
The aim of this study was to compare the reproductive
parameters of White Terns and White-tailed Tropicbirds
on Cousine Island and investigate if egg or chick failures
were associated with different stages of the incubation and
nestling periods. The study also examined the associations
between reproductive parameters and nest types
(White Terns), the two monsoon seasons and nest reuse.
We postulate reasons for observed differences in the
measured parameters between the two species
