Full textThis thesis questions the daily functioning of organizations, and the ways to prevent its degradation. A firm which shows no reaction to its external and internal environment will meet with degradations of its internal order. This can lead, for example, to inadequate individual behaviors, or malajusted strategies. In the socio-economical theory of organizations, degradations are named dysfonctionments, and their financial consequences, hidden costs, affect their social and economical performances. Many authors have used the concepts of order and entropy in physics to describe the management of firms. This thesis considers a firm as a living system. This research insists on the analogy with the life sciences. These works of research try to understand how the internal order, which links different parts of an organization, can be deteriorated. It is also an attemp at understanding how degradations may appear, and how actors of firms should try to increase their reactivity and vigilance in order to manage efficiently the evolutions in their firms. The activ concept of management, called "toilettage" (or cleaning practices) considers a more global and continuous kind of change to achieve such a goal. Periodical revision allows the firm to acquire reflexes of structuration and order, thanks to flexible tools and methods of management, aiming to soft and regular change. This thesis identifies six kinds of degradation in firms, which appear on six elements characterizing an action in its globality. It puts forward the establishment to found a "toilettage" activity in firms, thanks to a system of periodical revision, and to the organization and piloting "cleaning" actions. This "toilettage" cleaning concept should be used at all levels in the firm : operationnal and political, as well as strategical levels. The periodical review of functions in a firm contributes to maintain a stability of functioning, and also to censure its survival in the long run

Full textBiomass harvesting in plantations can be done in various forms: chips, billets, loose stems or stems rolled up in round bales. The latter method allows easy handling and moving of the biomass in addition to promoting natural drying during storage. A new machine that produces round bales of biomass, the Biobaler ® WB-55, was tested in plantations and on fallow land in 2009 and 2010. This master’s thesis reports mainly the performance of the Biobaler ® during 19 trials in plantations for a total of 546 bales harvested. The average harvested yield was 19.41 t dry matter (DM) / ha and ranged from 9.68 to 31.84 t DM / ha. The average mass of a bale was 427 kg wet matter (WM) (218 kg DM). The average density of bales was 138 kg DM / m³. The moisture content averaged 48.6% and ranged between 40.8% and 56.0% wet basis (w.b.). The average capacity of baling was 35 bales / h (7.69 t DM / h), the maximum capacity was 48 bales / h (10.53 t DM / h) and the minimum capacity was 23 bales / h (4.06 t DM / h). The diesel consumption with a tractor of 138 kW averaged 3.91 l / t DM and ranged from 2.12 to 6.96 l / t DM. The relative loss in the field averaged 11.3% and ranged between 5.7 and 20.1%. The baling cost averaged $ 20.95 / t DM ($ 4.47 / bale) and varied between $ 14.65 and $ 36.54 / t DM. Seven harvest methods that included baling, displacement of bales in the field and grinding were evaluated using the AHP method (Analytic Hierarchy Process). The cost of harvesting ranged between $ 32.72 and 44.07 / t DM ($ 1.83 and 2.46 / GJ) in plantations and between $ 57.84 and 76.74 / t DM ($ 3.23 and 4.29 / GJ) in fallow land. Following the AHP study, it was determined that the best method for harvesting biomass with the Biobaler ® incorporated a self loading bale carrier with a tractor of 86 kW and a forestry grinder with a diesel engine of 242 kW. Finally, the biomass transport cost for an average round-trip distance of 50 km was estimated at $ 10.72 / t DM ($ 0.60 / GJ). The transport cost of unprocessed round bales was estimated at $ 9.16 / t DM ($ 0.51 / GJ).

Full textThis thesis concerns the design of control system instrumentation architecture. The design of such architectures is a complex activity that requires a global vision of the system. More specifically, it consists to determine the set of instruments (number and type of sensors, actuators), their arrangement according the control system instrumentation. The choice of architecture constrains by main multi criteria's, on the one hand, the cost of the system and the various components that must be minimal, on the other hand, the dependability, which is evaluated in terms of the reliability of fulfillment of the mission of the design system. This field of research aims to unify the different approaches used in automatic in a global design methodology of control system instrumentation. This work proposes a method that aims to optimize the instrumentation using multiple criteria: cost criterion and dependability constraints in terms of reliability, quality of control, quality of performance, fault tolerant level. This design methodology is based on structural modeling. This study will focus on control systems to accomplish various missions without take into account the internal representation of the system (state equations). However, the tool of structural analysis is used for modeling of the system in design phase. The integration of the dependability aspect in the design methodology procedure of control system instrumentation may appear here in the form of the assessment of reliability mission based on structural links between the physical variables and instruments of the system, according to the performance levels and specifications of the required objective design

Full textIn 2013, SIAAP (the interdepartmental association for sewage disposal for the Paris conurbation) launched a program to upgrade the Seine Aval (SAV) plant, the largest wastewater treatment plant in Europe. This upgrade program, which is scheduled to be finalized in 2022, aims to adapt the plant to the urbanization of the Paris region and to regulatory requirements. After the upgrade, the wastewater treatment will be realized by two parallel treatment lines: (i) the biofiltration line and (ii) the membrane bioreactor line (MBR). The configuration of the treatment after the upgrade of the station will be complex, which provides several local and global operation choices to realize the wastewater treatment. To evaluate the economic and environmental impacts of these operation choices and identify the best choices based on treatment needs, support tools such as models simulating the performance of treatment processes are required. This thesis presents the modelling work for the biofiltration line of the Seine Aval plant after its upgrade in 2022. The modelled line is composed of a primary settling process, three stages of biofiltration and a tertiary clarification process. Considering the progress of the upgrade program, a modelling strategy for the biofiltration line is first proposed. This strategy defines the order of modelling for the treatment steps of the biofiltration line and the control rules to be integrated in the biofiltration line model. Then, the SimBio model and SimDec model, which respectively simulate the treatment performance of biofiltration and physico-chemical settling process, are modified and improved in order to build process models for each treatment step of the biofiltration line. The process models are calibrated and validated with data from the plants of SIAAP. After calibration and validation, the models are connected in order to build the model for the biofiltration line. Control rules and evaluations of treatment costs and environmental impacts are integrated in the biofiltration line model. Finally, to evaluate the potential for using the biofiltration line model as a tool for treatment optimization, several operation scenarios are tested and analysed. According to the results obtained, in general, the performance of each treatment step modelled can be well predicted by the process models. The built biofiltration line model is able to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of the operation scenarios and help to identify the optimum operation choice. It therefore has the potential to be used as a tool to help optimize the biofiltration line of the Seine Aval plant

We will also present somme theoretical discussion which are in the center of the decision of which projects to finance. The analysis covers the pilot phase of this financial mechanism which includes the period 1991-1994. We will present the "incremental cost" concept and we will finish the thesis by illustrating this concept through the colombian power sector and his expansion perspectives to the 19942007 period. We conclude by proposing to include a more dynamic criterias through a long term approach to the project selection which would allow to find a greater synergie between environment and developement : main objectif of the gef

Full textAdvanced environmental barrier coatings (EBC) are being developed to protect SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMC) used in hot-section components of next-generation gas turbine engines. One of the most reported failure modes of such protections is spallation due to oxidation by water vapor. During operation, water vapor diffuses through the rare earth silicate top coat and reacts with the silicon bond coat to form a silica layer known as TGO (Thermally Grown Oxide). During cooling, the phase transformation of silica from β-cristobalite to α-cristobalite leads to a 4 – 5 % volume contraction. As a result, microfractures appear in the TGO and delamination of the coating occurs upon cycling. This work aims to identify new bond coat compositions to enhance EBC lifetime. Several compositions were selected to prevent crystallization of silica or to stabilize it by the formation of a silicate. Uncoated (bond coat only) and coated samples (tri-layer system: yttrium disilicate/bond coat/yttrium disilicate) were elaborated by Spark Plasma Sintering. These samples were exposed to a wet atmosphere (50 kPa air and 50 kPa H2O, 1300 or 1400°C, low gas velocity in the hot zone 30 – 35 cm/s) for hundreds of hours. Oxidation rates, structure of the TGO, thermochemical compatibility and crack formation in the TGO and at the interface (TGO/yttrium disilicate and bond coat/TGO) are compared with the silicon bond coat reference system

Full textThe value of statistical life (VSL) is an economic analytical tool, which is defined as the value that a person is ready to pay (WTP) in order to reduce the risk mortality or morbidity. The advantage of such a tool is to monetarily estimate the social benefit of an investment project which is made to reduce the risk, but also to establish an arbitrage between several alternatives. Respond to the moral hazard in a context pertaining to the scarcity of resources, which is perfectly in keeping with VSL. With people’s estimation on their willingness to pay, depending on how they perceive risks and their income level, people are positioned as the sole judges as for the value of their lives. Because people freely determine the WTP depending on their personal preferences and these preferences are included in order to determine a social choice. The value of statistical life doesn’t contradict the normative framework of establishing a decision. Nonetheless, welfarism which is a source of estimating methods of VSL is directly related to utilitarianism. Eventually, the estimated value by VSL is subjective nature. In the health sector, the VSL needs to surpass the subjective framework of an estimation in order to answer the normative ethic which describes the medical practice, especially by taking personal self-sufficiency into account but also the personal notion of a good life and the universal notion of the person. Researching establishing arguments of reference value pertaining to VSL which takes on a normative framework and this is objective when it comes to our work. This theoretically requires an in-depth analysis within the economic theory of well-being
