Full textThis thesis offers a rebuilding of the standard of living concept, as a measure of material welfare, on the basis of functionings and freedom of choice. This rebuilding focuses on the goal leading to the standard of living indicators estimation authorizing interpersonal comparisons without disregarding too r1dically individual characteristics. On the basis of this definition, the calculus of an equivalent scale is undertaken, but unlike traditional scales, this calculus would transform the cost of a child in a variable depending on the family resources. Then we will try to integrate to the families standard of living wealth stock. This essay leads ot the estimation of new characteristics of dispersion of the french population standard of living distribution. Leasure time is the last varaible taken into account in the measure of material welfare ; ruling out the traditional measure of "full-income", an alternative is looked at considering that the set choice of a family (on the space "monetary resources-leasure time") defines more precisely its standard of living. After all, an estimation of total wealth distribution is offered in the last chapter

Full textThe study relates to adjustments of expenditures, by budget components, when households are facing an important fall of income. It begins with a presentation, in a methodological perspective, of the most important empirical studies on the subject. It goes on with a synthesis of the principal results arising from studies which relate to unemployed and presents the results obtained by the author from two surveys : "conditions de vie" from INSEE (1986) and "enquête socio-économique auprès des ménages lorrains" (1986). Eight components of household’s budget are considered: clothing, leisure, transport, home equipment, food, housing, health, expenditures for children. For each of this components are examined: its place in the hierarchy of outlays adjustments, the ways by which expenditures are reduced, the dynamic of adjustments, the relation between diminishing expenditures and different characteristics of households. For this last point, two complementary approaches are used: a descriptive one and an econometric one. The study points out the necessity of studying thoroughly the dynamic of the ways by which expenditures are reduced

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to indentify the methodological problems in international comparisons of life levels in historical perspective and particularly in Europe in 1820. European societies have undergonedeep changes at the beginning of the XIX's implying various consequences on life levels. This thesis is organized in two parts. The first part compares methodologies of specialists like P. Bairoch and A. Maddison. The second part presents and studies P. Bairoch's physical indicators methodology applied in the Europe at the beginning of the XIX's. Two types of result come out of the first part. Fisrt, we show the importance of the aggregation of the output sets on the basis of Purchasing Power Parities (PPA) to convert the sectoral output value to a common currency. Second, new personal methodologies are satisfactory. Moreover, L. Prado's methodology is particularly effective. The second part emphasises physical indicators like efficient in the determination of life level in 1820. We use wheat , agricultural productivity, consumption of coal, iron and cotton, per capita and a set of demographic data. This macroeconomic is completed by a microeconomic study using prices, nominal and real wages. Finaly, the Huma Development Index (version III) shows that United Kingdom's life level was superior of 30% on the French in 1820

Full textThis dissertation synthesises a series of papers, articles and books, produced between 1982 and 1998 and based on field experiences in a number of developing countries. It reviews the link between the households standards of living and the economic policy to help designing strategies for socially sustainable development. Through its three parts, it deals successively with the definitions of the household and the standards of living, with the evolution of investigation systems aiming at collecting appropriate data, and with a series of issues related to development in a socially sustainable way. The first part examines the consequences of introducing social dimensions in the definitions of the individual, the household and the standards of living. This imposes to review the way decisions are made by social actors, to introduce a hierarchy in the corresponding levels of decision and to develop specific mesoeconomic analysis, based on the usual economic theories of the producer-consumer, the family and the social groups. The second part focuses on the need to design appropriate investigation system, more sophisticated than the usual survey systems, to answer to the information needs required by economic policies : i. E. Survey of the standards of living, identification of socio-economic groups, analysis of households behaviour, monitoring of social changes. The present evolution of investigation systems tends to encourage the use of specific monitoring and watch instruments such as the "observatories" which are able to combine on a long term basis both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Finally, the third part presents a series of specific issues to which it could be reffered for the design of strategies aiming at a socially sustainable development : measure of the impact of policy reforms, poverty reduction, monitoring of inequalities, use of social capital as an endogenous factor of growth, reference to current theories of altruism and social justice

Full textThe thesis connects two distinct strands of the literature: models of quantity and quality proposed by Deaton (1987, 1988, 1990) and Crawford, Laisney and Preston (1996) (CLP) and spatial econometrics. I first consider spatial patterns of economic agents decisions in the general context of analysis of share systems and I show that the adding-up property of shares implies equality restrictions on spatial autoregressive parameters of the share models with spatial dependence. Then, in a Monte Carlo study, I emphasize the possibility of the implementation of the Moran's (1950) test in microeconomic context not only to test for the presence of spatial correlation across error terms, but also to identify its potential sources. For estimating the spatial versions of the CLP model, I combine the methodology of Deaton (1987, 1988, 1990) and Crawford et alii (1996) and the procedure of Kelejian and Prucha (1999). I show then that this estimation method involves an identification problem of spatialparameters and that it requires spatial matrices with special structures. An illustration of the estimation of spatial versions of the CLP model is given, with an application of the technique to Czech household survey data; the estimates do not suggest that neighbors' budget shares are an important determinant of the household expenditures in the data analysed

Full textIn this thesis, the sexual division of labor is viewed as kind of employment relationship. One member of the household supplies household services to her partnber. The labor time of this second member is then devoted to the labor market with an increased efficiency (increasing returns in the human capital accumulation, wage gap between men and women). The spouse who is specialized in the non-market sector expects her household services to be paid for. The sexual division of labor is considered as an exchange of labor income and household services between spouses. On the basis of this employment relationship, the organisation of household economic activity is analyzed as a non-cooperative game. A non-division of labor appears to be the unique equilibrium outcome. Such an analysis seems to be especially relevant to developed western countries. Formally, this equilibrium stems from a "trust game" or the well-known one-sided version of the prisoners' dilemma game. To cooperate in spite of this theoretical impediment, the spouses might sign a contract at the outset of their relation, or behave altruistically, or also devise an internal governance structure. But in fact, these possibilities are not convincing. So the question remains : how to sustain cooperation in an household? given the nature of the exchange, that is intricated with durable and personal relations, we model it as a repeated game in which a trigger strategy should permit to sustain cooperation, ie a division of labor. The complete model predicts an extent of the non-division of labor in households. The specialization principle is refused when the exogenous probability of divorce, or more generally, of splitting, is too high and when the relative economic benefits of specialization are too low

Full textIf the question about standards of living of the elderly has taken an important place in developed countries since the early 20th century, it is not the case for developing countries, especially in Maghreb. This question deserves our attention for at least two reasons: a factual reason is related to the population aging. The second reason is related to the scarcity of scientific works on the matter and weaknesses of some approaches to measuring standards of living of older people. This thesis entitled ``Standard of living of the older people in Morocco: A construction of an equivalence scale with elderly'' aims to analyze deeply the question of standards of living of older people in Morocco, by estimating an appropriate equivalence scale to this country. First, we analyze the living conditions, consumption patterns and poverty of the elderly population in Europe, America and in Morocco. Next, we present a review of literature on equivalence scales. We end up our thesis by estimating an equivalence scale with older people adapted to Moroccan sociodemographic characteristics
