Abstract:
A predictive life tool for case-carburized railcar tapered roller bearings, called the Service Load Factor (SLF), makes use of residual stress and retained austenite data to assess the condition of bearings as a result of service history. It is well known that the interaction between retained austenite transformation and the development of residual stresses are primary factors contributing to cone bore growth and decreased resistance to raceway spalling. This paper attempts to quantify these changes throughout the life of a bearing to provide insight into the predicted remaining service life o

Abstract:
Because existing ships cover a range of stern bearing designs, the paper starts with a brief history of the development of stern bearings and an evaluation of existing designs. It then discusses the relative energy losses in different types of bearings and some interesting experiences. Next consideration is given to alignment and how oil lubricated bearings handle balanced loads and moment loads. The paper concludes with considerations of procedures for minimizing the problems of oil lubricated bearings working in water and a suggested process for eliminating intermediate struts.

The traditional method for hydrodynamic journal bearing analysis usually applies the lubrication theory based on the Reynolds equation and suitable empirical modifications to cover turbulence, heat transfer, and cavitation. In cases of complex bearing geometries for steam and heavy-duty gas turbines this approach has its obvious restrictions in regard to detail flow recirculation, mixing, mass balance, and filling level phenomena. These limitations could be circumvented by applying a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach resting closer to the fundamental physical laws. The present contri

The rehabilitation of WISMUT’s former Ronneburg uranium mining site involves backfilling of waste rock to the Lichtenberg open pit. The relocation project comprises about 110 million m3 of sulphide-bearing and AMD-generating waste rock which makes it the most important and most cost-intensive single surface restoration project conducted by WISMUT at the Ronneburg site. The backfilled waste rock has to be covered on an area of about 220 ha to control water infiltration and gas diffusion. Design planning for the final cover placement which began in 2004 had to be based on a comprehensive cost-be

Low-fee private schools are today recognised as important players in the education market in developing countries, as they are argued to provide at least marginally better education than is on offer in the state schools. Leading international development agencies have begun encouraging governments in developing countries to include them within the policy-planning process. Based on fieldwork in two urban neighbourhoods in Pakistan, this paper shows that low-income parents are keen to secure good-quality education for their children, but they have to choose not only between state schools and low

Earthquakes, which can cause tremendous local stress and strain on infrastructure, can cause reinforced concrete (RC) bridges to collapse due to the concrete cracking and fracture of the steel reinforcement rebars. The fracture of longitudinal reinforcing steel due to low-cycle fatigue is one of the main causes of failure in RC structures under earthquake loading. The purpose of this research is to include the effects of low-cycle fatigue fracture of longitudinal reinforcing steel bars on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers. "Driven steel H-piles are extensively adopted in engineering practice due to their convenience and efficiency in both economic and construction. The post-driving residual stress, a compressive axial stress distributed along the pile induced by the pile installation, might significantly deteriorate the pile bearing capacity. Thus, a large enough factor of safety is adopted in the traditional analysis to cover the influence caused by the post-driving residual stress. However, it sometimes leads to a large waste in costs and materials. Thus, the present study adopted the second-order analysis, a
