Cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) are legumes recognised as a good source of proteins in developing countries. Cowpeas are mostly utilised as cooked whole seeds. This is often achieved only after boiling for up to 2 hours, resulting in high energy consumption and a long time for food preparation. Micronisation of pre-conditioned cowpeas (± 41 % moisture at 153 °C) reduces their cooking time. The primary hypothesis of this research was that improved cowpea genotypes (selected under sole crop) could yield well in several Nigerian cropping systems, and that there were cowpea characteristics that improved overall system productivity. Analysis of antioxidant activity (AOA) of entries in the 2002 Regional Southernpea Cooperative Trial revealed not only significant differences among entries, but that entries with pigmented (black and red) seed coats were clustered among the highest, cream types were the lowest, while pinkeye and blackeye types were intermediate. A nitrous acid-induced, temperature sensitive mutant of cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) known as 8-14, (Evans 1985, Virology 1985, 141, 275-282), was characterised. The phenotypic defect in 8 -14 was shown not to affect translation of the RNA or the first proteolytic cleavage of the B RNA-encoded polyprotein. Pasta was produced from soft wheat supplemented with cowpea. Acid detergent fiber values increased from 0.4% in the soft wheat pasta (SWP) to 1.1% in the 30% cowpea pasta (CP). Cowpea supplementation provided an increase in total and available lysine from 42 to 113% and 39 to 117%, respectively. Chemical scores for preschool children increased from 56 in the SWP to 89 in the 30% CP. For school children the 20% CP provided a score of 102. The in vitro protein digestibility (IVPD) of cowpea was lower than that of soft wheat; as a result cowpea reduced the IVPD of SWP from 84% to a value of 78% f

Expression vectors based on the bipartite Cowpea Mosaic Virus (CPMV) have been investigated for use in molecular farming in plants. Agroinfiltration into Nicotiana benthamiana of two full-length RNA-2 constructs containing different marker genes in the presence of RNA-1 showed that two foreign proteins can be efficiently expressed within the same cell in inoculated tissue. However, segregation of the RNA-2 molecules was observed upon systemic spread of the recombinant viruses. Thus efficient assembly of heteromeric proteins is likely to occur only in inoculated tissue. The reproductive biology of three strains of Callosobruchus maculatus F. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), the cowpea-seed beetle, was studied. This beetle is a serious pest of stored legume seeds in the semi-arid tropics. As females aged, energy reserves were depleted and aspects of this decline were related to the number of eggs laid in order to explain the observed daily egg laying pattern of C. macuiatus.
