Stress corrosion, SC, in some cases gives rise to stress corrosion cracking, SCC, which differs from purely stress intensity driven cracks in many aspects. They initiate and grow under the influence of an aggressive environment in a stressed substrate. They grow at low load and may branch. The phenomenon of SCC is very complex, both the initiation phase and crack extension itself of SCC is seemingly associated with arbitrariness due to the many unknown factors controlling the process. This thesis proposes a quantitative model of fatigue crack initiation and early propagation based on a plastic strain intensity factor $ Delta{K} sb{p}$. A turning point which divides crack growth into the initiation and propagation regions is introduced as the plastic crack propagation threshold, $ Delta{K} sb{pth}$, whose value is determined by the plastic crack propagation threshold in the $ Delta{J}$-integral form, $ sqrt{ Delta{J} cdo

Premature failures of vital gas turbine components, such as blades and vanes, have been the result of increasing demands of power generation facilities. As power needs fluctuate throughout the day, operators are quickly firing up gas turbines as a means of providing instant power. Traditionally, these engines run at constant operating conditions; however, contemporary operating conditions call for these engines to be applied on an “as necessary” basis. The result of the cyclic startup and shutdown of gas turbines has led to a phenomenon known as creep-fatigue (CF). A coupling of two primar

Dzugan, Jan. "Crack initiation determination for Charpy size specimens." Forschungszentrum Dresden, 2010. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:d120-qucosa-29268.

Full text
Abstract:
An investigation in the field of the crack initiation determination for Charpy size specimens was carried out. An extensive literature survey of published methods for the crack initiation was performed. Methods based on the stretch zone width measurement, blunting line, multiple gauge measurement, electric potential drop, compliance changing rate, acoustic emission, ultrasonic method and magnetic emission are discussed in the theoretical part of the report. Analytical methods for the critical J-integral evaluation were also taken into account, as well as the expressions for the J-integral calc

Abstract:
In order to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms controlling inflammatory processes with a view to developing novel therapies for inflammatory disease, the research presented in this thesis has been focused on unravelling the molecular complexities associated with the initiation, propagation and resolution of inflammation. Although neutrophilic and eosinophilic granulocytes are key effector cells in orchestrating host defence against invading bacteria and parasites, their over-recruitment, uncontrolled activation and defective removal by macrophages play a prominent role in generating
