The purposes of the study are to understand the consumer behavior of the parents who let their children attend foreign language courses in cram schools or institutes, to know further if the parents show significant variance in the degree of the motives, the sources of information, and the evaluation or not. The data is composed by the parents whose child is the student of the junior high or the elementary school, and it is collected by 522 questionnaires and returned completely by 371 parents (about 71% response rate). The major four sources of reference material are " the recommendation from relatives", " the recommendations form other students'' parents ", " the recommendations from classmates or higher grade schoolmates ", and " the recommendations from teachers ". Above all are interpersonal recommendations, so we can understand the messages from interpersonal relationship have greater influence on consumers to make decisions to take lessons after school. The most important five estimative standard items are " the professional and expressional abilities of the teacher ", " the attendance conditions and teaching attitudes of the teacher", " the achieved percentage of scheduled progress and the atmosphere in class ", "the total hours and the number of times of taking courses ", and " the depth and the practicability of the contents of course ". The parents show significant variance in the degree of the motives, the sources of the messages, and the evaluations.

In Taiwan, the fertility rate has declined gradually by years and then the population pyramid shows low birth rate. Because of the phenomenon, the number of the students decreased every year, which results in the decreasing of the number of classes in the schools. However, the cram schools become more prosperous under the attack of low birth rate. The study will examine the impacts of low birth rate of cram schools by SWOP, interviewing the managers and teachers of G School, and questionnaire and case studies for parents. Further, it will be analyzed as Poter’s five forces analysis and 4C’s of marketing. Then, the cram schools will be suggested, based on the results, to develop in five ways such as sophisticated operation, multi-programs, internet marketing, improving the learning situation and raising a sense of worth. By means of implement the five ways, the cram school could operate well expectantly.

This is a case study based on questionnaire survey collected from students, parents, and teachers in schools and cram-school industries. By interviewing directors of the cram school and principals of two junior high schools in the district, a better understanding of the junior high school and cram school is gained in terms of teaching and managerial status, and development trends. Comparisons are also made through the results of the interviews. Moreover, the interviews and surveys provide an insight into the compatibility between demand and supply of teaching in relation to teachers, parents, and students. The purpose of this paper is to serve as a basis of reference for parents and students while selecting or recommending educational institutions, and for school and cram-school teachers while enhancing or adapting teaching and management. Through the case study, it can be perceived that cram-school institutes emphasize the boost of intellectual performance more evidently than that of schools with regard to teaching management. In schools, the teaching beliefs of “five educations (moral, intellectual, physical, team-building, and artistic) are equally important” and “teaching in accordance with the aptitude of the students” are widely accepted by teachers and students. The teachers’ commitment to teaching management is still essential and influential to the students’ learning curve. Schools, parents, and cram schools have constructed a compatible network around the students. The relationship between teachers and students can be seen as two extremes of demand and supply. With the impact of the low birth rate, school and cram-school teachers are required to offer extra services so as to meet the growing expectations of parents and students.

In recent years, under the situation of declining birthrate, cram schools compete intensely. The differences between marketing strategies behind English cram schools and those behind the humanities and science cram schools are the purposes of this study. This study uses four different cram schools in Kaohsiung City: two are humanities and science cram schools and two are English cram schools. Qualitative research method was adapted. Research data were collected and analyzed using the marketing 5P strategies by Gary in 1991: product, price, medium, promotion, and people. The conclusions indicate that on the aspect of product strategy, the differences between English cram schools and the humanities and science cram schools are the most; and the fewest of the differences on the aspect of medium strategy. On the other hand, the similarities on the aspect of product strategy are the most; and the fewest of the similarities on the aspect of price strategy. For those who want to invest or are now working in this field, the researcher suggests that they build their own marketing strategies and have unique products in order to be competitive.

The purposes of this study was to investigate the occurrence of attending cram schools for elementary school students and to examine relationships among perception of cram, academic self-efficacy, self-regulated learning, perceived academic achievement, and attending cram schools. It also explored whether attending cram schools brings any difference among perception of cram, academic self-efficacy, self-regulated learning and perceived academic achievement. A sample of 550 5th and 6th graders from the public elementary schools in Taiwan was selected. Questionnaires used in this study included Perception of Cram Scale, Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, Self-Regulated Learning Scale, Perceived Academic Achievement Scale and Reasons Scale. The data obtained were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, t-test and Enter Multiple Regression. The results of this study were as follows: (1)The percentage of students who attend cram schools is 82%. (2)The main reason why students attend cram schools is the perception of usefulness of cram courses, secondly is family factor. The lowest impact is from others. (3)Students feel that it’s more useful to study on their own or their family can help with their homework, so they don’t need to attend cram schools. (4)There are significant differences in perception of cram, cognitive regulation, behavioral regulation and perceived academic achievement between students with and without attending cram schools. (5)There are significant correlation among positive perception of cram, academic self-efficacy, self-regulated learning and perceived academic achievement. (6)Students with and without attending cram schools, academic self-efficacy and cognitive regulation could effectively predict perceived academic achievement.

As a result of the change of school education policies, the trend toward low birth rate and the low threshold of cram school, Taiwan’s cram schools are constantly emerging, which have different enrollment patterns, faculty members and curriculum planning. With the enhancement of parent’s education level, parents pay more attention to children''s academic courses, andhave more expectations and requirements in selection of cram school. Faced with an increasingly competitive supplementary education industry, management and development policies of cram schoolshould also advance with the times, and continuously adjust and update in order to maintain a competitive advantage. This research adopts a case study method. For the supporting strategies of which Taiwan’s supplementary education industry should carry out in response to social environment changes, a SWOT analysis is used to analyze H cram school. A five forces analysis discusses five factors that influence Taiwan’s supplementary education industry. From the results of the case study, some suggestions for management and development strategies of H cram school are provided.

Recently, due to the change in Taiwan’s environment, as the focus on the importance of language ability by people and the parents’ anxiety on their children’ education, so the demand for cram schools are higher than before. However, the only affair that the government regulates on cram schools is no more than providing acceptable facilities. There are few specific standards for qualification on teaching and class management. Parents, in a way, do have their own criteria for selecting ideal cram schools. Therefore, many cram schools are still thriving especially facing the economic recession and the trend of fewer children. During these ten years, the birth of children in Taiwan is fewer and fewer by years and reduces from three hundreds thousand to about two hundreds thousand, but the numbers of cram schools become more and more-step up quintuple from 1997 to 2006. The purpose of this study is to investigate the key success factors (KSFs) in Cram Schools on parental perspectives, based on a study of cram schools in Taipei area. This research was conducted through document collection, brainstorm meeting of cram school managers, preliminary questionnaire surveys and symposiums, finally a survey was conducted. The subjects of this survey were parents whose children are students of cram schools which have been set up for over 10 years and have a number of over 300 students. Finally there are 633 valid subjects were returned. The data of the survey were analyzed and the result is shown below: I. From parents’ point of view, the key success factors in Cram Schools will be1.professional teachers 2.student management 3. legality 4.business management. II. Parents in Taipei city showed lower intent toward “joyful learning” while parents in Taipei County showed higher tendency on that aspect. Therefore, cram schools in Taipei City need to focus on how to make students learn more knowledge and become more mature. On the other hand, cram schools in Taipei County should pay attention on whether students are learning happily or not, otherwise the cram schools may lose their students despite the progress in their grade records. III. Families of higher income would pay more attention on qualification of teachers. As the trend of fewer children was formed, so cram schools need to be more professional and high-priced in order to keep the market stable. IV. The key success factors in cram school are shown in the survey, which concludes in the following eight points: 1.teachers with enthusiasm and higher EQ 2. recruiting teachers from various sources 3. good facilities 4. advertisement 5. academic affairs 6.understanding expectation of parents on cram school industry-including cram schools with right visions of running schools, and cram schools with designing of gifted education, etc.. 7.understanding expectation of parents on cultivation of their children. 8.understanding expectation of parents on learning process of their children. V. In addition to the abovementioned findings, this research will provide valid criteria (KSFs) for cram school managers, government and parents on evaluating related affairs of cram schools. When evaluating or exploring the key success factors of cram schools, if time is enough, we can use the long-form survey, which includes 123 items. If there isn’t enough time, we can use the short-form survey, which includes 30 items.

As the social and economic environments changes, the worse boom has arisen after the financial shock. The changes in the education policies such as the use of various kinds of textbooks in the elementary school and junior high school, national education extends to 12 years causing significant reduction in number of students of younger generations admitting to schools. However, due to increasing number of teachers and low threshold in the establishment, the number of cram schools drastically increased from 5,017 to 18,096 since last ten years (2000-2009). Increasing cram schools with reducing number of students also lead to the low recruiting rates and huge fluctuations in the whole market. Therefore, the management of the cram schools toward right direction will be an issue of concern. Facing various factors such as the profit making, competition and customer requirement, it was possible to find out the competitive advantages or key factors of a successful cram school. In the present study, attempts have been made to figure out the major factors playing significant roles in the establishment of a successful and sustainable cram school in the market. By interviewing the experts, staffs and officers the score card was designed and the expert questionnaire was completed based on different aspects including finance, customer, internal management, learning as well as growth. The questionnaire was delivered to the experts by using the Delphi method. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to find out the key factors influencing the successful management of a cram school, and this was done after giving priority to the aspects including finance, customer, internal management, learning as well as growth. Based on the interviewing scheme research data were collected and coordinated. After the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA), the most important and satisfactory factors were determined by analyzing and scoring the values from the questionnaires. The important factors in the management of the cram schools were investigated from the AHP results and were ranked as follows: the cram schools should be legal and must be equipped with fire control facilities certified by the government, the location and traffic situation, the public praise for the superior teaching should be propagated by the patriarch, the satisfaction of the demands posed by the students. The less important factor was the scoring and assessment of the staff. The IPA demonstrated that the factors needed to be greatly improved were listed in the following ranking: the financial control of the cost, productivity, scoring and assessment system, identification and responsibility of the staffs. Overall, the fulfillment of scoring and assessment system should be the contemporary goal needed to be established and adjusted. The financial status will be taken into consideration to enhance the competitiveness of the cram schools in near future. In the ‘first needed to be improved’ and the ‘overemphasized’ factors, items with higher potential will be selected, in order to achieve success in establishing the sustainable cram school. Priority must be given to the factors above mentioned in order to boost the performance of the cram school. The overall profit can be maintained meanwhile increasing the competitiveness with respect to educating younger generation. The public praise for the superior teaching should be propagated by the patriarch, which will increase the profit with subsequent sustainable management. The present studies can serve as the reference to the staff, related personals or researchers for the sustainable management of the education offered by the cram schools.

ABSTRACT This study investigates, through the evaluation of marketing strategy and marketing execution and interviews with operators of after-school tutoring institutions, the inter-promoting relation among market demand for after-school tutoring, consumers referred to both parents and children, and tutoring operators in order to achieve a win-win situation. The motivation for this thesis originates from the transformation phenomenon in modern education. Todays young parents do not stick to cramming education and the anticipation of getting every first from any exam as the last generation and their children are more active in expression and mentally mature than any generation before them. Moreover, the birth rate sinking to a decrease of 37 percent during 2007-2017 and the long-lasting education revolution involving the advancement of self-learning system have a severe impact on after-school tutoring industry. As a result of the shaky domestic systems of education and the decreasing birth rate, the operation of cram schools faces more and more difficulty. How to make the key successful tactic has become a serious concern of any cram schools. Therefore, this research needs to include case study and action analyses. The strategically tools, deep interview and the balance scoring card, are earnestly adopted in addition. The main method is utilizing both the SWOT analysis and the TOWS analysis to find out the improvement of achievements of the key successful tactic and by this result to establish the topic. Making good use of the tactic map of balance scoring card to derive the topic from the relation between cause and effect. Inference of case-studying cram school is likely to guide into the key of successful tactic. This study infers that the case-studying cram schools have a positive impact on business performance after using “the electronic hardware” and “small- class teaching”.

This study mainly discusses the phenomenon of cram schools clustering and co-evolving. Research of studies on cram schools clustering and co-evolving was uncommon in the past. Therefore, this study takes the “cram schools for elementary and junior high school students” as the study object, with Narrative Inquiry and Case Study as the methodologies. The source and basis for analysis and discussion is from reviewing documents and literature which are related to this topic, and moreover data gathered from 6 cram schools in 4 locations, where the researcher actively participated in business, made observations, and conducted interviews. The three objectives for this research are: First, to understand the co-evolving phenomenon of cram schools from their interaction among one another; second, to find the connection of the three factors below: the regional environment of the cram schools, the clustering of the cram schools, and the operating strategies and patterns of the schools; and finally, to project a research direction for future researchers, enabling them to reference this study for their own research topics in this area. The findings of the research are: (1) the variety and intensity of regional market demand for learning has a positive influence on the formation of the cram school clustering. (2) The recognition degree of consumers, or how much the parents agree with the school’s policy, affects the school’s business strategies and patterns. (3) The intention of consumers (parents) affects the school’s choice on business strategies and patterns (market development, product development and product proliferation). (4) The more similar the intentions of the consumers in the market are, the easier it is for cram schools’ operating strategies and patterns to fall into normative isomorphism. (5) The abundance and stability of the population has a significant effect on the school’s business strategy and pattern. The less abundant the population is, the easier it is for the schools to be prone to normative isomorphism. The less stable the population is, the easier it is for schools to be more prone to mimetic isomorphism. (6) Change of a consumer’s family income or structure causes certain levels of interference in a school’s operating strategies and patterns. (7) The more unstable the consumers’ family incomes are, the easier it is for the schools to be prone to mimetic isomorphism in their products and services. (8) The higher the intensity of the cram schools clustering is, the easier it is for information to circulate among the schools, which fact causes the schools to be more prone to inter-organizational learning and imitation that leads to mimetic isomorphism. Finally, this study provides conclusions, suggestions, study limitations, and directions for future research.

In Taiwan, most of the parents have been used to sending their children to buxibans (after-school intensive classes) and under the exam-oriented circumstance, many students often end up there after school because they don't want to fall behind their peers. According to the survey conducted in August, 2003 by Department of Statistics in Ministry of Education, the percentage of junior high school students attending buxibans was 49.91% and of elementary school students 52.72%. Buxiban attendance rates have been annually on the increase due to heavier exam-oriented pressure, contributing to greater buxiban business opportunities. This study is to understand reasons that influence parents whose junior high school children are in exam-oriented buxibans to choose which one to attend. Also, this study is to interpret key factors in those buxibans' success. Surveys in this study were conducted between December 1st and 20th by convenience sampling from parents in Tainan, of which effective ones were 22. AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) was adopted in this study to undergo investigation and Microsoft Excel was to make survey analysis. The result of the weight hierarchies in order is professional knowledge and skills of the teaching faculty in a buxiban as well as their instruction, a smooth and dynamic spatial design, management capabilities of a buxiban, sufficient equipment, convenient transportation, image and word of mouth, novel and attractive equipment, regular schedules on children's arrangement, on the initiative to notification of how students are, class management abilities, crisis management of the buxiban faculty and a reasonable charge.

The purpose of the research is to understand the key factors which affect the decisions made by most elementary-children parents when they choose a cream school for their children. Using Delphi method, Analytical Hierarch Process (AHP), as well as a lot of literature review, we try to figure out the orders of these factors in their mind as possible as we can. Through an expert questionnaire method, we aimed at the parents of elementary school children, cream schools, and education practitioners in Kaohsiung areas to make the research. A total of 37 questionnaires were returned with 38 valid ones, for a total of 97.3% return rate, and 92.1% validity rate. The result of this research showed that among the physical assets, intangible resources, and core competencies, the last ones have the greatest effect upon them, and the physical assets are the next. Meanwhile, the prior consideration key factors based on the indexes are as follows: teacher’ service experience, teacher- student ratio, effective communication skills and active responsiveness, environment and facilities, and personnel stability. The less critical indexes are brand goodwill, and incentives.

Due to the lowering of the market needs and the surrounds of fierce competitions, the question of how to find out potential students with intentions for higher education has become the greatest challenge. To understand the factors of Attitude toward the Behavior, Subjective Norm, and Perceived Behavioral Control, this study employs the Theory of Planned Behavior as a framework and uses structured questionnaires in investigating both collegiate senior students with and without intensions for higher education. Secondly, this study uses the decision tree in data mining to find out the types of the intentions that might influence collegiate students for higher education. Thirdly, the study groups the types and describes and labels according to the characteristics of the types, and further proposes different marketing strategies and suggestions for different segments of the market. The results of the study are as followed: First, the key influential factors include: ‘whether the degree can bring more salary’ and ‘whether the personal network can be expanded’ within the Attitude Toward the Behavior category; ‘whether family members and friends think it is worthy to go to the graduate school’ in the Subjective Norm; ‘whether I have the confidence to pass the test’, ‘whether there is enough financial support from the family’, and ‘whether I have faith for handling the school works’ within the Perceived Behavioral Control category; ‘Whether the current school is a national one, private or vocational one or a normal one’ among the demographic statistical variables. Among these factors, the most important factor is ‘whether I have faith for handling the school works’. Second, by using decision tree in constructing prediction model of intension for higher education, ten types of the rules could be found. Types of the rules then further are grouped into 5 with the intension for higher degree and 5 without the intension for higher degree respectively. Based on the characteristics and the description of the groups, suggestions and marketing strategies were then proposed and given. Third, results of this study can play the role of being the reference for cram schools when conducting market segmentation and telemarketing.

SUMMARY Along with the decline of birth rate in Taiwan, education industry has become closely associated to the phrase “low fertility”, which was firstly proposed by the Japanese government in 1990. However, the statistic from Cram School Information Management System has shown that there is an increase in the number of cram schools, despite the falling birth rate. It is obvious that owners of cram school business would face the threats of shrinking student recruitment and increasing competitors. Therefore, to develop effective practices in order to improve student retention rate and to improve competitive advantages are becoming critical to managers of cram schools. This research investigates the correlation among teachers' personality traits, teaching quality, and student retention rate, and use the results find out the factors that influence the management of cram schools. The principles proposed by Marsh is used as basis for the establishment of teaching quality assessment mechanism, and experts in academia and cram schools are interviewed to revise the framework. The weighted values of elements in all dimensions of the framework are therefore calculated by using Analytic Network Process (ANP) process. Regression Analysis is further adopted to analyze the questionnaires distributed to representative teachers, supervisors, students and parents who are in the cram school to understand correlation among teachers’ personality traits, teaching quality and student retention rate. The results have shown out that the most important criteria for teaching quality is the teachers’ enthusiasm. Whether the teacher is passionate and vivid in teaching and is able to arouse students’ interest in study are the most practical prerequisites to assess teaching quality. In addition, the Regression Analysis results indicate that “teacher with conscientious personality trait” significantly influence “teaching quality” and “teaching quality” has significant positive effect on “student retention rate”. It is also found out that “teaching quality” is the most important factor that affects the “student retention”. Instead of advertisement or other low cost strategy, cram schools could achieve their goal of sustainable development through the improvement of teaching quality.

In order to understand the service quality of children’s English cram school, this study selected the parents of children studying in English cram schools in Taichung City as the study subjects. In this study, a total of 350 questionnaires were distributed using the snowball sampling method. 308 valid questionnaires were retrieved with the effective return rate of 88%. The data were processed using Microsoft EXCEL and then the study found out that “Joy English”, “Hess English”, and “Giraffe English” are the three major children’s English cram schools in Taichung City. The study then used Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) to analyze the data. The findings imply that these three children’s English cram schools put too much effort on promoting their brand awareness, which the parents do not think it’s important. Instead, the cram schools should put more effort in providing a more reasonable tuition rate for their students. In addition, the study also provided practical suggestions for the three children’s English cram schools respectively in order to improve their service quality.

Cram schools management is no different from other businesses. Employees’ job satisfaction may very well be affected by stress, and will ultimately influence the turnover intention of the employees. Due to the impact that a dissatisfied teacher may generate, not only to himself, but to the school (increasing costs, decreasing teaching quality…), and also to the students, we consider that understanding the factors that affect the job satisfaction of foreign teachers at cram schools in Taiwan should be a priority for cram schools owners or managers. This research aims to study the effects of stress on cram school teachers’ job satisfaction, and ultimately on their turnover intention. At the same time, aims to identify which factors correlate with lower levels of satisfaction, and make recommendations to managers in order to improve, if possible, such levels in those factors, and thus, reduce the turnover intention. The methodology of this research has a quantitative approach. The data was collected by administering questionnaires in Taiwan via the internet. The data collected was statistically analyzed through a Structural Equation Model. The results showed that the foreign teachers at cram schools in Taiwan are, in general, not stressed, but they are barely satisfied at their workplace, and they have a slight desire of leaving their current school. The results also showed that Contingent Rewards and Fringe Benefits are the factors where managers have more margin of operation in order to increase their employees’ job satisfaction.

The number of cram schools, no matter learning cram schools, language cram schools or skill cram schools, has been increasing rapidly in the past few years in Taiwan region. But the operation of cram schools has faced serious problems because of the government policy and the reducing birthrate. If managers of cram schools expect to survive and remain profitable, they need to maintain excellent quality of teaching and adopt tactics of business management. Because such relational research is rare on cram schools, this study utilizes the quantitative analysis to find critical elements of success. Some scholars argue that enterprise could reduce operating costs and enhance competitive advantages by retaining customers. Thus, how to gain customer loyalty is important for operating cram schools. This research utilizes a questionnaire survey and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to investigate the influence of expertise, service quality, and relationship quality on its customer loyalty in the short-term cram schools of junior high schools in Hualien region. The findings in this research are as follows: (1) expertise and service quality will affect customer loyalty indirectly by relationship quality; (2) service quality affects customer loyalty positively; (3) relationship quality affects customer loyalty positively; and (4) expertise has no direct influence on customer loyalty. The above findings will provide marketing strategic information for local cram schools to efficiently allocate resources.

The purposes of this study and research are to: analyze the current situation of marketing management from primary cram schools and the criteria for parents and students in selecting cram schools. We would therefore provide analysis results and opinions to cram school business. The result is served as the references for strategic discussion and marketing strategy. Last but not least, we would discuss the level of satisfaction and value base on the quality of each service and good. The research was conducted through the form of survey. The main populations are parents from five primary schools, who are willing to fill in the questionnaires. Total questionnaires distributed: 200; collected: 166; valid questionnaires: 163; percentage for valid questionnaire: 81.5%. In-depth interview with parents from cram schools was conducted simultaneously. This is to find out their expectation on cram schools. We would therefore comprehend their sensations towards the current services provided by and their requests by the current service provided by cram schools. And then, customize the future strategic marketing planning for cram school business. From the analysis results, we could tell that parents have various demands and expectations from cram schools. The requests can categorize into three parts: academic aspect, attention & teaching aspect and efficiency aspect. Undoubtedly, cram school business should equip itself with the above requirements. As a result, we have come out with a wish list with specific examples. They are: finish students’ school works in cram school; maintain students’ consistency in learning and academic results as well; use the time wisely instead of watching television or playing computer games. Furthermore, although this is beyond teachers’ obligations, they could also lead students to the accurate life path. This is to minimize unpleasantness between parents and students during learning process. Advisers from the research, cram schools should be on the same pace with schools in education schedule. Complete and detailed teaching quality can increase students’ learning absorbability. Furthermore, some parents’ time schedule is restricted and preoccupied by works and thus is unable to reach home on time. Cram schools should therefore pay more attention on such matters, and parents would be able to sense the consideration and thorough services. We believe that this will certainly gain a good reputation on public praise. Last but not least, organizing outdoor learning would make the learning journey more flexible and intriguing for students. All in all, services provided by cram schools must be tangible for parents. Make parents think that their choice is not a mistake but indeed beneficial to their children. Unquestionably, they will automatically propagate to people around them. Finally, this study supplementary education strategic direction for the future operation of the operation to make four specific strategies, such as enhanced reputation and prestige, high-quality teachers and teaching materials to emphasize the polarization of the price, and the other end is brought about after learning future benefits. Hope from the strategy of low birth rate and the number of cram schools, the crisis emerged, and turned into our opportunity.

Attendance at cram schools is an experience that the majority of Taiwanese have while growing up. However, the incidence and impact of cram schooling are still understudied and have yet to receive much attention. Traditional and modern Chinese cultural values have emphasized human malleability and self-improvement. Even though the Chinese imperial examination was abolished during the Qing dynasty, this system has become deeply ingrained in Chinese society more than a thousand years. As a result, parents then and now set higher standards for their children, with increased focus on their academic performances at school. Therefore, cram schools were created to meet parents’ expectations of their children, boasting formal curriculums and homework support designed to ensure students’ academic success. This research adopted a qualitative case study on four English cram schools in Feng-Yuan District of Taichung with intensive interviews, investigating the net effect of English cram schooling on parents’ expectations, students' academic performances, English teachers’ opinions and the viewpoints of managements from English cram school owners. The three major findings are: The first, English is to be considered as an important foreign language in Taiwan. The second, three diversities of English environments between public and cram schools are the main reasons for parents enrolling their children into English cram schools: (1) English curriculums, (2) Materials and environments, and (3) English teachers. The third, parents place high expectations on their children’s English performance. In this study, more than 85% children started learning English in kindergarten, though as of now this is still banned. The remaining 15% began studying English in grade one at cram school. In 2018, the executive director, Mr. Lai, in Executive Yuan, indicated that the Ministry of Education (MOE) plans to undo the current regulations of prohibiting kindergartens from teaching English as a second language, and hopefully draw up the lesson plan as early as 2019. Meanwhile, he also announced his plan that would transition Taiwan into becoming a Chinese-English bilingual country by the year of 2030. Although of the announcements about English education and goals for the end of 2018, this policy is still unclear. Attending to cram schools has formed a culture and is an experience that most Taiwanese students go through, so it will be hard to eliminate. All parents in this study placed high expectations on their children’s English academic performances, which they relate to the children’s competitiveness in the future. Regardless of whether English is required to begin first grade at public school, parents still enroll their children in English cram school. In the effort to forge children’s English ability in Taiwan, the researcher suggests: (1) To ease restriction on the age of starting English instruction, (2) To increase English instruction hours and materials in public school, (3) To recruit native English-speaking teachers in primary school. To conclude, English cram schools have become the bridge needed to fill the gap among parents’ expectations of their children’s academic performances, students’ requirements and the MOE’s English education policy.

The purpose of this research is to explore the status of current lower birth rate and the impact it has on existing cram schools. The main purpose is to provide cram schools with references and results of the research regarding different managing methods. The personal interview method was adopted. Owners, students, and parents were interviewed and complete data recorded. This method allows the interviewer to ask pertinent questions to gather and record current data. This is followed by conclusions and suggestions for cram school managers. Cram school owners may use the information to find solutions concerning the following areas: management strategy, teacher loyalty, student achievement, parent involvement and alliances with other cram schools. The cram schools that are willing to adjust their management strategy in accordance with their ability, and will strive to meet their future goals using the guidelines set forth in this research, should be able to endure the crisis brought about by the lowering birth rate. If the manager's perception of the problem is incorrect, it is likely that their decisions regarding the proper solution will also be incorrect. If the manager chooses to adopt the suggestions set forth in this research, the opportunity of solving existing problems should be increased.

Abstract The purpose of this research was to explore English native speaking teachers’ perceptions about current English cram school for youth in Taiwan and explore their beliefs for teaching. The participants were four English native speaking teachers from the English cram schools in Tainan City. In this research, the researcher conducted a qualitative method which involved adopting the interviews, observations, and journals to collect the data. The main findings were shown in the following: 1. The participants considered that Taiwanese English proficiency was good because people were very willing to help foreigners deal with the problems in daily life by using simple English vocabulary, phrases and sentences. However, they believed that providing good environment for learning English could be improved. 2. Regarding the ideal timing for learning a new language, the participants could not point out the best timing for people to learn a new language. They held the belief that the earlier, the better. 3. Regarding the culture shock, most of the participants were very surprised at the hours on which the children in Taiwan spent at schools and cram schools every day. Furthermore, although children in Taiwan were under such a big pressure, they found that children in Taiwan were very well-mannered. 4. Concerning the motivation of the native speaker for being an English teacher of youth, the participants all had high enthusiasm for being an English teacher of youth. 5. Regarding the native teachers’ teaching methods and procedure, the participants described that they usually followed the lesson plans provided by the cram schools to teach in class. Before class, most of them would preview and take notes about the lessons they wanted to instruct that day. After class, the Chinese English teachers would deal with the students’ problems instead of the native teachers. 6. All of the participants had a common rule, and that was “No Chinese” in the classroom. Additionally, they asked the students to respect teachers. Most of them did not give physical punishments to students. The teachers also mentioned that they often gave oral praise to students who had good performance in class and also encouraged students who were shy to participate in the activities. Consequently, they always kept good relationship with children in the classroom. 7. Regarding the teaching challenge, the participants considered that the biggest challenge was to teach children with diverse English competence in one class. 8. With regard to self-evaluation and expectations, the participants mentioned that they altered the teaching methods immediately when they encountered some problems in their teaching. Their common expectations were to make a better environment for youth to learn English and let children study English under an ideal environment.

This research aims to probe into the teaching behaviors of teachers at cram schools for junior high school students. The objectives are to (1) identify the intentions of Math teachers’ teaching behaviors, (2) analyze the characteristics as well as impact factors of the teaching behaviors in question, and (3) understand the students’ identification with the teaching behaviors. Purposive sampling was adopted to increase the reference value of the research; three cram school Math teachers with over 20 years of teaching experience and highly appraised by students and parents in Hsinchu and Hualien were chosen as research subjects. Research data were collected from interviews [with the subjects], classroom observations, and questionnaires [distributed to the students]. The subjects were firstly interviewed on their teaching behaviors, followed then by classroom observations to verify the data collected from interviews. Possible explanations were sought from the subjects when inconsistency occurred between the observation data and the interview data. Questionnaires were distributed to students when sufficient data had been collected from interviews and observations. In order to acquire complete feedback from students, interviews were given to students in random order upon the completion of questionnaires. Data collected from questionnaires and interviews were used together to analyze students’ impressions on teachers’ teaching behaviors. Possible explanations were once again sought from the subjects when doubts occurred between the questionnaire results and the interview results; classrooms revisited for any clue possibly left out. Triangulation was employed to interpret the entire data collected from different origins and channels, and to further identify as well as generalize factors behind the interpretation in question. Finally, not only the intentions, the characteristics, and the impact factors of Math teachers’ teaching behaviors at cram schools for junior high school students, but also students’ identification with the teaching behavior in question were analyzed to achieve the objectives of this research. As far as its objectives are concerned, this research has reached the following conclusions: 1. Intentions of Junior-High Cram School Math Teachers’ Teaching Behaviors 28 teaching behaviors have been discovered and categorized into three different stages: (1) [Pre-Teaching] Preparation and Plans, (2) [In-Teaching] Interaction, and (3) [Post-Teaching] Assessment and Evaluation. 2. Characteristics and Impact Factors of Junior-High Cram School Math Teachers’ Teaching Behaviors Six characteristics and eight impact factors of the teaching behaviors have been discovered based on different research means and origins. 3. Identification of Junior-High Cram School Students with their Math Teachers Two conclusions have been made via analyzing – both qualitatively and quantitatively – students’ feedback: (1) the teaching behaviors in question are found helpful to students’ learning of Mathematics, and (2) the abovementioned finding, i.e. helpful, have been statistically approved.
