Abstract:
Research on Thai films after the 1997 economic crash identifies a strong nostalgia for unblemished Thai traditions, ones particularly represented through the countryside and the ideal rural family unit. However, this chapter aims to investigate the comedic Boonchu film series, dating from 1988 to 1996, to address how these films also valorize rural Thailand, a scenario constructed as real ‘Thainess.’ The chapter examines localism, a discourse promoted by the series as a means to undermine modernization, so revealing considerable anxiety around cultural and economic transformation. Nonetheless, the chapter argues that while the series idealizes rural identity as a means to defend Thai cultural values, it also offers a negotiation (rather than a rejection) of various influences of modernity.

Abstract:
The text books say that there is no cave art in Britain. These will now have to be rewritten. . . . There had been a psychological barrier to the existence of cave art in Britain . . . butnever a satisfactory explanationas to why there was none. (Jon Humble, Inspector of Ancient Monuments, English Heritage, in an interview with John Pickrell for National Geographic News) In April 2003 Britain’s first unequivocal Palaeolithic parietal art was discovered in Creswell Crags, a narrow limestone gorge located on the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire border in the English North Midlands. The announcement of its discovery was accompanied by a furore of media attention. Archaeological dogma had long maintained that no such art would be discovered in Britain, although, as Bahn (2003) has suggested, there was no good reason for such art not to exist. As Bahn highlighted, Britain has plenty of caves with evidence of Upper Palaeolithic occupation, plus examples of portable art from the period, including two figurative engravings attributed to Creswell Crags. The Magdalenian era was the last time that Europe was unified ‘in a real sense and on a grand scale’ (Paul Pettitt, quoted in The Guardian, 15 April 2004) and the conference organizers realized that to fully appreciate and understand the Creswell art, it must be considered in its wider continental context. The conference in Creswell was conceived to bring together specialists from across Europe and to place the art of Creswell in its European setting. The conference was held at the Social Centre in Creswell from 15 to 17 April 2004, and was organized by the team who had discovered the art, along with Andrew Chamberlain of the University of Sheffield and Ian Wall of the Creswell Heritage Trust. The Creswell Crags project is at the heart of regeneration in this former rural coalfield area. Indeed, Jon Humble (English Heritage 2003) has described the project in glowing terms as, ‘quite possibly the best and most successful example of an archaeology-led project for social and economic regeneration anywhere in the UK’.

Abstract:
Freshwater crustacean inland fisheries are typically confined to small local areas that are associated with bodies of water, like rivers and swamps. They are small-scale fisheries, enough to supply the requirements for local commercial use, and considered mainly as a subsistence resource for small fishing communities. As such, inland crustacean fisheries exemplify a subsistence opportunity for small countries with limited economic power, particularly rural communities. Crustaceans are a relevant protein source alternative to fish, and they are often also associated with local gastronomical and cultural identity. Data for the most commonly caught species are often unavailable since these fisheries exist in remote areas where government or institutional monitoring is limited, making it difficult to obtain reliable data about small-scale fisheries. Nonetheless, the captured species and the techniques used are widely diverse. In inland fisheries, the main target species are prawns from the genus Macrobrachium, gathered within the tropics all over the world. Natural fisheries of crayfishes in their native range exist on several continents, with Procambarus clarkii, Pacifastacus leniusculus, and Astacus astacus as the main commercial species. Some of them have also become a fisheries resource in areas where they were introduced. The only terrestrial crab fishery is for an anomuran, the coconut crab Birgus latro. The future of most of these fisheries depends in part on the health of the water sources threatened by contamination and unrestricted waterways jeopardized by the construction of dam-like structures that block the migration of some species to complete their reproductive cycles. The creation of regulatory policies is key for keeping the fishery activity self-sustainable because most of the exploitation depends on wild populations. There are some conservation efforts implemented thanks to the relevant gastronomical value of the species, as well as to economically sustain local communities in remote areas.

Abstract:
This research analyses how urban form, land use and urban density, may influence the incidence of traffic-related crashes injuries and deaths. It begins with a theoretical overview of studies which deal with the study of the relationship between urban patterns and road safety. Next, it details the development of a database of crash incidence and urban form at the district level for the city of Benidorm (Alicante, Spain) in 2010. Subsequently, it is developed a negative binomial approach for intra-city motor vehicle crash analysis. One-year crash data for Benidorm (the fourth largest tourism de

Abstract:
All over the world India bangs the top most position in crash deaths. Nearly 1.2 lakh people die every year on Indian roads. Crashes involving rolloverand lateral skidding are now responsible for almost 1/3 of all highway vehicle occupant fatalities. So, rollovers and skidding are more serious than other types of crashes. One of the major reasons for such incidents is vehicle instability at curves due to its inconsistent geometric design. This necessitates a review on current design guidelines followed in India. Many researchers have pointed out drawbacks of current design approach and a few h

Abstract:
The current safety management program in Indiana uses a method based on aggregate crash data for conditions averaged over several-year periods with consideration of only major roadway features. This approach does not analyze the risk of crashes potentially affected by time-dependent conditions such as traffic control, operations, weather and their interaction with road geometry. With the rapid development of data collection techniques, time-dependent data have emerged, some of which have become available for safety management. This project investigated the feasibility of using emerging and exi

Abstract:
Edge lane roads (ELRs), also known as advisory bike lanes or advisory shoulders, are a type of shared street where two-way motor vehicle (MV) traffic shares a single center lane, and edge lanes on either side are preferentially reserved for vulnerable road users (VRUs). This work comprises a literature review, an investigation of ELRs’ operational characteristics and potential road user interactions via simulation, and a study of crash data from existing American and Australian ELRs. The simulation evaluated the impact of various factors (e.g., speed, volume, directional split, etc.) on ELR op
