Abstract:
The purposes of this study were to examine the influence of proactive personality on creative behavior, the mediating effect of learning goal orientation in the relationship between proactive personality and creative behavior, the moderating effect of creative self-efficacy in the relationship between proactive personality and learning goal orientation, the moderating effects of organizational creative climate and supervisor support for creativity in the relationship between learning goal orientation and creative behavior. Data were gathered from 330 employees who were working in one organization in Korea. To reduce the effect from the common method bias, the creative behavior was rated by others(three hundred and thirty peers, subordinates, and supervisors). As a result, learning goal orientation partially mediated the relationships between proactive personality and creative behavior. Creative self-efficacy moderated the relationship between proactive personality and learning goal orientation. Organizational creative climate moderated the relationship between learning goal orientation and creative behavior. Also supervisor support for creativity had a moderating effect between learning goal orientation and creative behavior. Finally, implication of results and future research tasks were discussed with limitations.

Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between transformational leadership, learning orientation, creative self-efficacy, and employee creativity in manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in China. A survey involving 742 employees was conducted, and hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was employed to analyze the data. The result showed that transformational leadership has s significantly positive effect on employee creativity. Moreover, both individual and team-level learning orientations are positively related to employee creativity significantly. Creative self-efficacy (CSE) mediates the relationship between transformational leadership, team learning orientation, and individual learning orientation on employee creativity. These findings suggest that transformational leadership, learning orientation, and CSE enhance employee creativity in Chinese MSMEs. We discuss the implications of these findings and offer suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
Mathematical creative thinking skill often becomes the orientation of mathematics learning, aiming to enhance students’ creativity in mathematics. Recognizing that creativity encompasses the capacity for thinking creatively and creativity disposition is essential. Building on this conceptual foundation, the primary objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive model illustrating the relationship between students' aptitude for mathematical creative thinking and their creative disposition. The research methodology employed in this study aligned with the framework of cause-and-effect analysis. The study cohort consisted of 36 students, carefully selected by a cluster random sampling technique. The research instruments included a mathematical creative thinking ability assessment and a creative disposition scale. The data was analyzed using the Non-Recursive Structural Equation Modeling. The results showed the reciprocal cause-and-effect dynamic between mathematical creative thinking ability and creative disposition, exhibiting a mutually influential relationship with determination coefficients of 21.83% and 21.05%. This shows that mathematical creative thinking ability is better at explaining mathematical creative disposition than mathematical creative disposition explaining mathematical creative thinking ability, with a relatively small difference (0.78%). This study also concluded that an optimal approach to mathematics pedagogy entails a balanced and simultaneous focus on nurturing mathematical creative thinking ability and disposition.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to examine why and when employees engage in creative deviance to develop creativity in China. Drawing on strain theory, the authors examined creative deviance engagement as a mediator and transformational leadership as a moderator of the distinct relationships between emotional and rational status-striving orientations and radical and incremental creativity. Design/methodology/approach Multisource survey data were collected from 126 team leaders and 446 employees in Chinese firms. Multilevel path analysis was used to test the hypotheses. Findings The results show that emotional status-striving orientation relates to creative deviance engagement, which, in turn, has a stronger relationship with radical creativity than with incremental creativity. Furthermore, creative deviance engagement mediates the indirect relationships between emotional status-striving orientation and radical and incremental creativity. Moreover, transformational leadership moderates the above indirect relationships. Originality/value This study is among the first attempts to empirically test the distinct relationships between creative deviance engagement and radical and incremental creativity and further examine how creative deviance engagement mediates the indirect relationships between status-striving orientations and radical and incremental creativity. In addition, the boundary condition of the indirect relationships is investigated. The findings provide valuable insights for the extant literature on status and employee creativity.

Abstract:
We proposed a construct of creative contribution, which expands the existing focus on creative performance as an isolated individual effort for generating creative ideas. Creative contribution comprises 3 components: the generation of creative ideas by an individual in a group, helping the creative performance of other group members, and stimulating the creative energy of other group members. A multilevel analysis of data from 37 teams consisting of 147 individuals showed that creative contribution was increased by learning goal orientation and decreased by performance goal orientation. A significant 3-way interaction indicated that participative safety attenuated the negative effect of performance goal orientation on creative contribution, particularly when learning goal orientation was low. The significance of multilevel dynamics between individual dispositions and social context in shaping the creative contribution of group members is highlighted in this study.

Abstract:
The transformations taking place in modern society necessitate the professional training of a mobile, creative educator who is able to creatively approach the development, implementation and development of innovative technologies in the pedagogical process. The Federal State Educational Standard of Higher Education and the Occupational Standard of an Educator make demands on the personality of a modern educator who has creative abilities and the ability to solve pedagogical problems in practice outside the box. Among the competencies of the 21st century personality, its creativity, which actualizes the process of developing the creative orientation of the future educator, is designated. One of the means of developing the creative orientation of the future educator personality is social and pedagogical practices that ensure the formation of professional skills and the development of creative thinking and cognitive creative activity of future educators. The forms of social and pedagogical practices were volunteer and pedagogical teams, in which socially significant and project activities, developing a creative orientation, creative thinking, and introspection of creative activity, have been identified. The components of the development of the personality creative orientation have been designated: motivational, intellectual-cognitive, reflexive, which formed the basis of the experimental research. The purpose of the research: to theoretically substantiate and to experimentally test the influence of social and pedagogical practices on the creative orientation development of the future educator personality. Research methods: theoretical (analysis of literature, regulatory documents); empirical (study of experience, pedagogical experiment); survey and diagnostic (map of the pedagogical assessment of the educator's abilities to innovative activity (V.A. Slastenin, L.S. Podymova), diagnostics of creative thinking in solving educational problems (I.A. Verchenko, K.Yu. Galushchak, E. Oleinik), the Assessment and Self-Assessment of Professionally Important Qualities technique (N.K. Sergeeva, V.V. Arnautova)); mathematical (methods of statistical processing of research results (F-test (Fisher's criterion))). Research results: the theoretical and methodological approaches to the development of the individual creative orientation have been highlighted; the components of the creative orientation of the future educator personality are developed, positive dynamics has been revealed, and the effectiveness of the use of social and pedagogical practices in the creative orientation development of the future educator, taking into account the methods of mathematical statistics, has been proved. Practical significance: the materials of the paper will be useful to the professional community of lecturers of pedagogical universities and researchers dealing with the problems of developing the creative orientation of the future educator personality.

Reed, Susan Margaret. "Creative journeys : enlivening geographic locations through artistic practice." Thesis, University of Derby, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10545/621915.

Full text
Abstract:
Creative Journeys contribute to our knowledge of how practical ontology navigates multi-perspectives through an auto-ethnographic journey with material. I investigate how it may be possible to navigate geographic locations – Norway, Britain and Spain – through knitting as an approach to practical and philosophical exploration. In Creative Journeys I am in a process of reflexive practice, engaged in external and internal dialogue, haptic encounters, challenges and creative action. My thesis suggests that engagement with material is a fluid process and understanding evolves, so too does my journey in life. In such circumstances material functions as a mediator; creates a bridge between hand, movement, time and space. Material transcends boundaries, assists orientation and facilitates articulation of aesthetics, reminiscence, symbols, patterns, colour, sensory appreciation; all of which contribute to an understanding of relationships. Body is material and being conscious of body movement with the rhythm of diverse locations enables me to make connections through daily events, to attune to different atmospheres. In such a journey there are moments of harmony and misunderstanding, discord and adjustments; interruptions occur with energy and disrupt patterns of life. These are crossing points which enable me to experience myself through the perspective of the other; to understand how situated knowledge changes in relation to diverse perspectives; and to understand how I may contribute to the social fabric of life of diverse locations through the art of paying attention to detail. Creative Journeys are investigated through three questions: How do I relate to the world? How do art subjectivities manifest themselves through art practice? How does art evolve through relations? The questions are examined within the perspective of situated knowledge; subjectivities; material of location and practice. Investigating material in the context of these questions provides opportunities to develop capacities to navigate social, cultural and political orientation, economy, health, race, gender and belief, which all impact on the journey. My approach to the thesis evolved through my relations with creative works of knitted artefacts which I documented in personal journals. The components of practice have woven threads of inquiry through theory and reflective critical practice and form an aspect of the viva voce examination. Along with the illustrations they contribute to 20% of the written component of the thesis.

Griffing, Gene A. "Creativity and religious orientation : an interactional study of psychological wellbeing." Virtual Press, 2002. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1233199.

Full text
Abstract:
Past research has shown that both creativity and religious orientation are related to psychological wellbeing. There has also been some support for the idea that a relationship exists between creativity and religiosity. The present study sought to determine whether the interaction between creativity and religious orientation would be a significant predictor of psychological wellbeing. Psychological wellbeing, in the current study, was defined as the linear composite of life satisfaction, meaning in life, and purpose in life. The independent variables were measured using the Religious Orientation Scale, the Religious Orientation Scale Revised, and the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. Dependent variables were assessed via the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Scales of Psychological Wellbeing Short Forms, and the Life Attitude Profile Revised. Questionnaires were administered to 291 college students at a mid-western university. Individuals were identified as being either high or low in creativity and as either intrinsic or extrinsic with respect to their religious orientation. A final participant sample participant sample of 120 participants was retained for analysis and a two by two factorial MANOVA was performed to determine if creativity and religious orientation would interact. While the results of the study suggested that creativity and religious orientation were both significant predictors of psychological wellbeing, the interaction of these variables was not found to be a significant predictor of psychological wellbeing. The independent factor of creativity was found to be a significant predictor beyond the .05 level for psychological wellbeing, satisfaction with life, purpose in life, and meaning in life. Similarly, religious orientation as an independent factor was found to be a significant predictor beyond the .05 level for psychological wellbeing, purpose in life, and having meaning in life. While this data is consistent with the current literature, religious orientation was not a significant predictor of life satisfaction. It was postulated that the lack of interaction may have been attributed to low variability in test scores, developmental characteristics of the sample, and/or the more precise psychometric properties of the instruments used in the current study. Recommendations for future research were suggested.<br>Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services

Abstract:
Anno 2013 Europe resides in a severe economic crisis that has been lasting for five years. Companies are struggling to deal with the influences of this crisis and require strategic insights to maintain performance. According to theory entrepreneurship and innovation are central mechanisms in the creation of wealth in the capitalist system and an entrepreneurial strategy could provide relatively much benefit in a crisis period. This study focuses on the central question:  How does an entrepreneurial orientation affect the performance of companies in the economic crisis? To answer this question a variety of theories on entrepreneurship, innovation and the creation of wealth in capitalism were examined. On many occasions quantitative research has been performed to measure the relationship between an entrepreneurial orientation and performance. This study provides an extra dimension by using archival financial data of companies during and before the crisis to draw comparisons and examine developments in performance in relation to an entrepreneurial orientation. Data on the entrepreneurial orientation was collected with an online survey which was sent to companies. The results of the survey indicated the degree of entrepreneurial orientation of the companies in separate categories; innovativeness, proactiveness and risk taking. The results were linked to their financial performance which was obtained from a database. Comparisons between the performance before and during the crisis in relation to the scores on entrepreneurship were made, and the development of their financial performance since the crisis was examined. The results of this study indicate that an entrepreneurial orientation has a relatively more positive influence on performance during the crisis. However the relationship between an entrepreneurial orientation and performance is highly dependent on the company and type of industry so no unilateral positive correlations with performance were found. For a set of industrial, manufacturing, chemical and service companies the development of the financial performance since the crisis is highly positively correlated with innovativeness and proactiveness. For a set of other company types including foundations, (public) utility companies, (public) real estate companies, construction companies, trade and investment firms no correlations were found. The findings in this study indicate that depending on the type of company and industry, an entrepreneurial orientation can have a strong positive effect on the development of financial performance in the crisis.

Au, Kam Man. "How does empowering leadership impact on innovative performance? A study on the role of employees' entrepreneurial orientation, values and creative self- efficacy." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2018. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/575.

Full text
Abstract:
Aiming to better understand how empowering leadership affects employees' innovative performance, this research examines this relationship by reviewing the existing leadership and innovation literature, then theorizing and testing the extent to which employees' entrepreneurial orientation mediates it. This research also proposes that the effect of empowering leadership on followers' entrepreneurial orientation will vary according to the presence of different moderating variables. Hence, the moderating effects of the employees' value of openness in the relationship between empowering leadership and employees' entrepreneurial orientation are examined. Similarly, the effects of the employees' creative self-efficacy in the relationship between employees' entrepreneurial orientation and their own innovative performance are explored. In the study, supervisor-employee matched data from seven factories across three provinces in China were collected. The results of the data analysis supported the association between empowering leadership and employees' innovative performance, as well as the mediating effect of employees' entrepreneurial orientation. The moderating effect of employees' creative self-efficacy was also supported. However, the moderating role of the value of openness was not significant. These findings enable us to better understand the mechanism by which an empowering leader influences employees' innovative performance. It also explains how this process of influencing is subject to employees' various individual characteristics.

Abstract:
Encouraging employees to contribute their unique creative outputs to an organization can be a pivotal source of innovation and continuous organizational growth. Cognitive diversity has been demonstrated to increase group creativity, but the same effect on an individual level at multinational corporations has not yet been tested. Using a sample of 122 employees currently employed at Japan-based organizations/companies in the U.S., this study theorized that cognitive diversity was predicted to significantly interact to influence individual creative performance, and that power distance orientation mediates such a relationship. Several simple and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to test the model. The results showed that cognitive diversity significantly predicted individual creative performance. Although the mediation effect of power distance orientation was not detected on a relationship between cognitive diversity and individual creative performance, a moderating effect was identified through an exploratory analysis. This study concludes with a discussion on the contributions to cognitive diversity and the implications of the results for research and potential future research objectives.

Errington, Patrick. "In kind : the enactive poem and the co-creative response." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/16857.

Full text
Abstract:
How we approach a poem changes it. Recently, it has been suggested that one readerly approach - a bodily orientation characterised by distance, suspicion, and resistance - risks becoming reflexive, pre-conscious, and predominant. This use-oriented reading allows us to destabilise, denaturalise, dissect, defend, and define poetic texts through its manifestation in contemporary literary critique, yet it is coming to be regarded as the sole manner and mood of intelligent, intellectual engagement. In this thesis, I demonstrate the need to pluralise this attentive orientation, particularly when it comes to contemporary lyric poetry. I suggest how an overlooked mode of response might foster a more receptive mode of approach: the 'co-creative' response. Lyric poems mean to move us, and they come to mean by moving us. Recent 'simulation theories of language comprehension', from the field of cognitive neuroscience, provide empirical evidence that language processing is not a product of a-modal symbol manipulation but rather involves 'simulations' by certain classes of neurons in areas used for real-world action and perception. As habituation and abstraction increase, however, these embodied simulations 'streamline', becoming narrow schematic 'shadows' of once broad, qualitatively rich simulations. Poems, I suggest, seek to reverse this process by situationally novel variations of language, coming to mean in the broadly embodied sense in which real-world experiences 'mean'. Readers are asked to 'enact' the poem, to 'co-create' its meaning. Where critique traditionally requires that readers resist enactive participation in the aim of objective analysis, the co-creative response - a response 'in kind' by imitation, versioning, or hommage - asks readers to receive and carry forward the enactive unfolding of a poem with a composition of their own. I assert that, by thus responding with - rather than to - poems, we might foster an attentive stance of active receptivity, thereby coming to understand poems as the enactive phenomena they are.

Abstract:
This study employed the theoretical framework of Albert Bandura???s social cognitive theory, to investigate how differing levels of self-efficacy impact on both the type and degree of self-regulatory behaviour employed by the students when composing music in a high school music program. The literature review revealed an abundance of related research suggesting a strong relationship between self-efficacy and self-regulated behaviour in the ???core??? academic domains of education. In contrast, there was no specific research found that had examined self-efficacy and self-regulation in the context of students composing music. An independent school in Sydney served as the research site, with sixty-eight students of varied year levels and musical experience participating in the study. Students used stand alone computers, the software ???Cubase??? and MIDI keyboards as they completed a task that involved creating an original piece of music in a genre of their own choice, over a series of four composition sessions. A mixed methodology was employed to determine if the influence of the students??? self-efficacy beliefs upon their self-regulation in a creative activity were consistent with existing research. Data were collected using a mixture of weekly measures and self-report scales, combined with a variety of questionnaires, logs, tally sheets and interviews. Eight variables, including the self-regulatory sub-processes of goal setting-strategic planning, intrinsic motivation, goal orientation, task expectation, time on task, task completion, monitoring were analysed together with an additional variable, defined as creative ability, to determine if evidence could be found of a relationship between self-efficacy and these specific behaviours while composing. The results suggest that the pre-task (Week 1) measure of self-efficacy was closely associated with the students??? use of the eight self-regulatory dimensions as well as their perceived level of creative ability. Weekly self-efficacy measures also suggested that students??? employ self-regulated sub-processes proportionally to their respective levels of self-efficacy. Importantly, the more efficacious students employed a wider and more sophisticated repertoire of self-regulated behaviour when composing in contrast to the less efficacious students. Self-efficacy was also identified as a key factor amongst students who were initially identified as being naive self-regulators, but who through the duration of the task, modified their behaviour to become more skilful self-regulators. Throughout the study, the consistent level of interaction between self-efficacy and the use of self-regulated behaviours were aligned with findings in the core ???academic??? disciplines of education.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter seeks to explore decolonisation as a creative orientation to problematise the politics of knowledge hierarchies of university curriculum (research methods in the case of this chapter) in order to respond to issues of epistemic violence and exclusion, and create transformative and radical ideas about the future of education. The critical discussions are the result of my interactions with different educators and students within the UK and beyond, my lived experience as an Algerian Kabyle who immigrated to the UK, and my doctoral research. The latter sought to explore the lived experiences of EFL (English as a foreign language) master’s (MA) students in studying research methodology and writing their dissertations in education fields at an Algerian university. I begin to discuss my own education journey in both Algeria and the UK which was grounded in Eurocentrism. The chapter then defines the concept of decolonisation in the context of educational research, and what this proposed orientation may mean for the future of education. I further explain the significance of using decolonisation as a creative approach to address exclusion and inequality, and invite readers to think of what it may mean in terms of their practices, pedagogies and creating new possible realities of educational futures. I also conclude with offering some practical ideas for change to decolonise educational research methods curriculum in a higher education (HE) context.

Abstract:
AbstractHealth and welfare technology are expected to help people live independent and healthy lives, including contributing to elderly care. Robots have gained more cognitive functions and improved safety, which makes it possible to use them to provide new types of services. Although care robots have great potential for health and welfare, their application proves challenging. A lack of knowledge is a major barrier to the use of robots in care. This chapter’s authors examine knowledge and knowledge building as a central perspective when introducing, using, and assessing care robots. In their research synopsis, they focus on the micro, meso, and macro levels related to care robot use while unveiling a more systemic view of the issue of its related orientation—a tangible example of the multi-faceted encounter of knowledge and technology. They propose focusing on orientation to care robot use as the continuous co-creative process of introduction to technology use and its familiarization, including the learning of multi-faceted knowledge and skills for its effective use. With this perspective, the authors emphasize the processes and actions that take place among orientation givers and receivers at different levels. The societal-level actors—such as business and industry, public administration, and the non-profit sector, the media, and other stakeholders in the related innovation ecosystem—should not be overlooked.

Abstract:
The aim of our research was to discover whether education in 3D computer graphics and visualisation can improve students' spatial visualisation skills and how the complex project as a design and synthesis of a 3D animation influences students' creativity. Spatial visualisation skills are extremely valuable in various professions, including graphic design and engineering, where 3D modelling and visualisation is becoming increasingly important for the qualitative execution of professional projects. Scientists define two types of three-dimensional skills, spatial visualisation and spatial orientation, where visualisation is understood as the ability to mentally rotate, flip and flip over presented images, while spatial orientation describes the ability to recognise the position or direction of objects in space. Creative process is defined as a sequence of thoughts and actions that lead to original and appropriate productions. The creative process can be discussed on two levels, i.e. macro and micro level with the related phases of the creative process: orientation, preparation, complementary stages after preparation, incubation, idea generation, production. The facultative course Advanced computer 3D graphic and visualisations is taught in the 2nd level studies of Graphic and interactive communication. Through project work, students are encouraged to use their creativity and imagination to create a visually attractive 3D animation that is also interesting in terms of content and in which they can convey the story they want to tell. For this reason, we often held individual sessions in which the teachers made profound corrections to the students' work and made suggestions for the further development of their projects. Experimental methods were: Questionnaires for self-assessment of the creativity process, whereby the students also interpreted their creative process with an illustration and the spatial visualisation test before and after the course. Regular evaluation of their project work with regard to the entire design process, i.e. 3D content creation, planning, technical approach and production, were also carried out. Results of the analysis present an interesting insight in students’ creative process, spatial ability and comprehension of 3D computer graphic that could be considered as teaching/learning guidelines in the coming academic years.

Abstract:
We present the paradigm of natural and exploratory shape modeling by introducing novel 3D interactions for creating, modifying and manipulating 3D shapes using arms and hands. Though current design tools provide complex modeling functionalities, they remain non-intuitive and require significant training since they segregate 3D shapes into hierarchical 2D inputs, thus binding the user to stringent procedural steps and making modifications cumbersome. In addition the designer knows what to design when they go to CAD systems and the creative exploration in design is lost. We present a shape creation paradigm as an exploration of creative imagination and externalization of shapes, particularly in the early phases of design. We integrate the capability of humans to express 3D shapes via hand-arm motions with traditional sweep surface representation to demonstrate rapid exploration of a rich variety of fairly complex 3D shapes. We track the skeleton of users using the depth data provided by low-cost depth sensing camera (Kinect™). Our modeling tool is configurable to provide a variety of implicit constraints for shape symmetry and resolution based on the position, orientation and speed of the arms. Intuitive strategies for coarse and fine shape modifications are also proposed. We conclusively demonstrate the creation of a wide variety of product concepts and show an average modeling time of a only few seconds while retaining the intuitiveness of communicating the design intent.

Abstract:
The review is about textbook on television and radio communication for students, teachers of faculties and departments of journalism, as well as journalists-practitioners, prepared by the author’s team edited by Vasyl Lyzanchuk. Textbok absorbed some considerations and conclusions from previous theoretical developments, which found a new meaning here, deeper argumentation, supplemented by many interesting observations that correspond to the spirit of the time, the innovations that have appeared in recent years in the media space of Ukraine. The textbook has ten sections, each of which is designed to enrich the student with knowledge of television and radio communications, teach him or her all that a media professional should know and be able to apply it in practice. The titles of the sections indicate their practical orientation: «Basic methodical measures of functioning of information radio and television genres», «How we analyze, interpret, explain facts, events, phenomena», «Features of the creation of artistic programs on radio and television» and others. All sections of the textbook are meaningfully connected and constructed in such a way as to provide students with the opportunity to gradually, step by step to deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge of television and radio communications. This is undoubtedly the merit of the authors of the edition. The student will benefit from the numerous examples of television and radio materials prepared by the students themselves. Their creative work should convince that this work can serve as a stimulus for creative work for future journalists during their years of study. In addition to professional competence, as rightly emphasized in the textbook by Professor Vasyl Lyzanchuk, “It is very important to form in students, future journalists, socio-national competence, deep understanding of the essence of freedom of speech and responsibility for the content of the spoken word and image, to develop the belief that they are active participants in the Ukrainian state-building processes, and not intermediaries or repeaters of information”. It should be noted that the educational element is present throughout the textbook starting with the first chapter, historical (author Professor Ivan Krupskyi). While studying this textbook, students should realize that from the honor of journalists, their dignity, patriotism depends on the honor, authority, bright name of Ukraine, its future; that their assertion of Ukrainian national identity is the key to further prosperity of our state.

Full text
Abstract:
The orientation of constructed levee embankments relative to alluvial swales is a useful measure for identifying regions susceptible to backward erosion piping (BEP). This research was conducted to create an automated, efficient process to classify patterns and orientations of swales within the Lower Mississippi Valley (LMV) to support levee risk assessments. Two machine learning algorithms are used to train the classification models: a convolutional neural network and a U-net. The resulting workflow can identify linear topographic features but is unable to reliably differentiate swales from other features, such as the levee structure and riverbanks. Further tuning of training data or manual identification of regions of interest could yield significantly better results. The workflow also provides an orientation to each linear feature to support subsequent analyses of position relative to levee alignments. While the individual models fall short of immediate applicability, the procedure provides a feasible, automated scheme to assist in swale classification and characterization within mature alluvial valley systems similar to LMV.

Guzmán, Julio, Nohra Rey de Marulanda, and Jorge Ugaz. The Orientation of Social Spending in Latin America. Inter-American Development Bank, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0012216.

Full text
Abstract:
The orientation of social spending is a decisive element for the creation and allocation of opportunities for all because it reveals, to some degree, the priorities and relative importance a government assigns to directly and indirectly tackling poverty, inequality and their consequences. Paradoxically, there are only a few studies that analyze the orientation of social spending by socioeconomic groups in Latin America. The present study tries to solve this, presenting and analyzing the incidence of social spending on education, health, and social security for the majority of Latin American countries in order to understand how State actions contribute to providing for the needs of the poorest groups of the population. This study concludes that only five of the 11 countries under examination had progressive social expenditures; furthermore, the pace of change seems to be very slow. Although there are some positive trends - for example, spending in primary education - social spending in secondary education, tertiary education, and social security and pensions are highly regressive, even more than expected. This creates a greater sense of urgency in the region to deal forcefully with the issue of equity in social spending.

Abstract:
The French composer Francis Poulenc had a profound admiration and empathy for the writings of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. That empathy was rooted in shared aspects of the artistic temperament of the two figures but was also undoubtedly reinforced by Poulenc’s fellow-feeling on a human level. As someone who wrestled with his own homosexuality and who kept his orientation and his relationships apart from his public persona, Poulenc would have felt an instinctive affinity for a figure who endured similar internal conflicts but who, especially in his later life and poetry, was more open about his sexuality. Lorca paid a heavy price for this refusal to dissimulate; his arrest in August 1936 and his assassination the following day, probably by Nationalist militia, was accompanied by taunts from his killers about his sexuality. Everything about the Spanish poet’s life, his artistic affinities, his personal predilections and even the relationship between these and his death made him someone to whom Poulenc would be naturally drawn and whose untimely demise he would feel keenly and might wish to commemorate musically. Starting with the death of both his parents while he was still in his teens, reinforced by the sudden loss in 1930 of an especially close friend, confidante and kindred spirit, and continuing throughout the remainder of his life with the periodic loss of close friends, companions and fellow-artists, Poulenc’s life was marked by a succession of bereavements. Significantly, many of the dedications that head up his compositions are ‘to the memory of’ the individual named. As Poulenc grew older, and the list of those whom he had outlived lengthened inexorably, his natural tendency towards the nostalgic and the elegiac fused with a growing sense of what might be termed a ‘survivor’s anguish’, part of which he sublimated into his musical works. It should therefore come as no surprise that, during the 1940s, and in fulfilment of a desire that he had felt since the poet’s death, he should turn to Lorca for inspiration and, in the process, attempt his own act of homage in two separate works: the Violin Sonata and the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’. This exposition attempts to unfold aspects of the two men’s aesthetic pre-occupations and to show how the parallels uncovered cast reciprocal light upon their respective approaches to the creative process. It also examines the network of enfolded associations, musical and autobiographical, which link Poulenc’s two compositions commemorating Lorca, not only to one another but also to a wider circle of the composer’s works, especially his cycle setting poems of Guillaume Apollinaire: ‘Calligrammes’. Composed a year after the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’, this intricately wrought collection of seven mélodies, which Poulenc saw as the culmination of an intensive phase in his activity in this genre, revisits some of ‘unheard voices’ and ‘unseen shadows’ enfolded in its predecessor. It may be viewed, in part, as an attempt to bring to fuller resolution the veiled but keenly-felt anguish invoked by these paradoxical properties.

Abstract:
People with diverse sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression (SOGIE) are a hard-to-reach population. This is because of restrictive legal frameworks, social exclusion, stigma and discrimination in service delivery. Because people with diverse SOGIE often avoid seeking healthcare at government health centres, mpox-related health services might not reach them. Contact tracing can be stymied by laws that criminalise same-sex behaviour. In contexts where sodomy laws are enforced and arrests are being made, listing same-sex partners can be akin to admitting to criminal behaviour, and providing contact details of sexual partners poses grave risks to them. Laws that criminalise same-sex behaviour do not criminalise providing services for people with diverse SOGIE, but they justify marginalisation and can encourage discriminatory service provision. Healthcare providers and humanitarian workers supporting the mpox response need to know the framing and the impact of such restrictive laws to help them reach people with diverse SOGIE effectively without putting themselves or their patients at risk. This brief provides a socio-behavioural analysis of the vulnerabilities, risks and resultant operational key considerations for working with people with diverse SOGIE in the mpox response. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the second mpox Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in August 2024. The brief’s considerations are especially pertinent given that in the countries most affected by mpox, people with diverse SOGIE are at best stigmatised and at worst criminalised, necessitating a careful approach to ensure that they are reached adequately without creating further harms. This brief provides contextual information and practical recommendations to humanitarian aid workers and healthcare providers responding to mpox outbreaks in contexts that restrict rights related to SOGIE, with a specific focus on African settings. The brief provides an overview of the epidemiology of mpox as it relates to gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and explains the specific medical and social vulnerabilities of this group. The brief then provides an overview of the relevant legal frameworks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda, Nigeria and Burundi. These countries have reported high numbers of mpox cases during the most recent PHEIC, and the brief explains the consequences of each country’s legal framework for both healthcare and humanitarian aid provision.
