Abstract:
Cognitive therapy is sometimes thought to be a set of mechanistic procedures, but in actuality the therapy requires creativity from both therapist and client. Creative clients may be able to think more flexibly and engage themselves more readily in the experimentation, imagery, and role-play techniques typical of cognitive therapy.

Abstract:
In the article, we considered the basic conditions for creative abilities development of future choreographers, analyzed the significance of choreographic art in personal creative development, and identified methods to increase creative activity in student-choreographers. Authors have proved that contemporary dance contributes to the discovery and emergence of the uniqueness of each person, the formation of bright creative personality, because of imagination, diversity, and unpredictability play an important role here, as each next dance performance, search for new elements of vocabulary, creation of new compositional solutions require improvisation, creativity, and skills of presence in the moment of performance. It is noted, that it is very important to include elements of dance movement therapy in the process of preparing future choreographers. Authors have offered the themes that allow to activate processes of personal development, find a balance between feelings of freedom and responsibility, and reveal creative possibilities of choreographic students.

Abstract:
Healthy romantic relationships contribute to human physical health and emotional well-being. Technologies that catalyze human sexuality such as silicone sex toys and video-conferencing are increasingly common today, and disruptive sexological artifacts such as sexbots are speculated to eventually compete directly with human-human sexuality. The consequences of these evolutionary transitions in human sociosexual behavior are entirely unknown at the individual or collective scale. Here we introduce Partner Pen Play in Parallel (PPPiP), the act of simultaneous improvisational drawing on paper without clinical supervision. In this prospective article we sketch out what PPPiP is, then provide interdisciplinary evidence from art therapy, sexology, affective neuroscience, and aesthetics to support PPPiP as a useful strategy for relationship development. PPPiP combines the advantages of individuated artistic practice with the established frameworks of improvisation and dyadic relationship interventions. Relative to traditional art therapy practices, PPPiP is less clinically oriented, features fewer external constraints, and directly encourages the dynamic integration of artistic creation with relationship co-creation. PPPiP emphasizes the importance of narrative structure and controlled novelty at multiple scales in intimate partnerships, connecting art therapy practices more directly to recent neuropsychological research. Evidence from brain imaging in improvisational and aesthetic contexts supports a model in which PPPiP synergistically activates motor and cortico-limbic neural circuits associated with skilled emotive-creative processes. PPPiP thus represents a transdisciplinary answer to the question of what will we carry from our sociosexual past towards a healthier textosexual future.

Abstract:
Thesis (MMus (Music))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Music teaching in groups is an important aspect of the development of the child in Foundation Phase teaching. Early childhood has been described as the most critical period in the child’s musical development. With the introduction of Outcomes based Education in South Africa, the curriculum regarding the presentation of music classes has changed. Similarities between music group classes and Gestalt Play Therapy were investigated, with the aim of incorporating concepts of Gestalt Play Therapy into music group classes. Legislation was studied in order to determine the expectations of the South African government, and specifically the education departments, relating to music teaching. In the present curriculum, the weight allocation for music in the Foundation Phase was significantly reduced from what it was previously. Teachers must structure their own music programme into their curriculum. Investigation into the presentation of creative music group classes, with the incorporation of the principles of Gestalt Play Therapy, was undertaken in this research study. Gestalt Play Therapy is a holistic approach that combines the principles of Gestalt theory with Play Therapy. Research was undertaken to investigate whether specific stages in Gestalt Play Therapy could be successfully combined with music group classes. This research emphasizes that the developmental stages of the child, specifically physical, neurological, cognitive and language development, should be taken into account when presenting lessons, and that children may be guided towards a higher level of integration and balance in themselves. Research into OBE principles suggests that the way forward could be a continuation of the OBE model, but with certain amendments. An inductive study of practical observation and presentation of creative group classes was undertaken. It was found that most teachers were not adequately qualified to present music classes, and creativity was not satisfactorily addressed in their lessons.

Abstract:

One of the functions of the Church is to care for people. The children, however, are often neglected with more attention being paid to the adolescent and adult. Moreover, the verbal approach used when pastors work with children who experience difficulties do not seem to address this fully. Play therapy, on the other hand, appears to be a useful means of addressing this deficiency. It is often used in psychotherapy and social work and can be used to good effect in the caring of the Church for children. Play therapy enables the pastor to fulfill the Church's obligation to care for children, without disregarding the unique character of pastoral care and pastoral counselling.

Abstract:

Creativity is the central concept of this research. The goal of the research was to explore the value of creativity in play therapy with sexually abused children in the multi-cultural South-African context. The research was done from a constructivistic epistemological foundation and existential-phenomological paradigms. Extensive theoretical research was supported and substantiated by empirical research. The theoretical research process focused on the holistic impact of sexual abuse on children in and as part of their specific context (field). It became clear that sexual abuse implies severe trauma for the child, and affects all of their modalities, and their functioning in their field. The impact of severe and ongoing sexual abuse on children, as complex post-traumatic stress disorder, was described to clarify their therapeutic needs. A synthesis of gestalt-, person-centred- and logotherapy to address the traumatic after-effects of sexually abused children creatively in play therapy, was developed and described and motivated in the research paper. The concept of creativity was defined and extensively explored an applied in the context of therapy with sexually abused children. Creativity as a cognitive process, a problem solving process, and an artistic process is explored and applied in this context. The value of creative activities, the challenges of being a creative therapist, the supportive role of the supervisor and the systems in society, was explored and described. The empirical research process was done in a participatory way in the form of a multiple case study. Five therapists followed a therapeutic process, according to the guideline, guidance and supervision of the researcher, with a child who had been severely sexually abused. The results from the research confirmed the value and necessity of creativity in dealing with the severe trauma of sexually abused children and bridging gaps in a multi-cultural setting. The theoretical framework of the researcher and a guideline for creative therapy with sexually abused children was tested in the empirical research process, and could be refined and finalised. It was concluded that the use of creativity is crucial in play therapy with sexually abused children in a multi-cultural context, such as South Africa.

Roodt, Zarine. "Writing in therapy: a gestalt approach with an adolescent." Diss., 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2445.

Full text
Abstract:
This exploratory and descriptive investigation used the case study as research strategy to indi cate how writing may be used as a specialised form of therapy for an adolescent in the phase of mid-adolescence. The study researched and consolidated a body of knowledge concerning writing in a therapeutic context, while highlighting the Gestalt therapeutic approach. Its empirical integration culminated in a method for the use of therapists who irrespective of their therapeutic orientation wish to apply writing in therapy with adolescents. The dissertation argues that writing practised from a Gestalt therapeutic perspective should move gradually from being a tool of self-expression to becoming one of self-nurturing. It should guide the client through a process of self-regulation to a point of self-support. In such a process, writing in therapy will evolve into writing as therapy, a therapy practised by the client her- or himself as a means of achieving equilibrium.

Abstract:
Abstract Intracranial aneurysms have the potential to be fatal; when detected, they must be treated promptly by surgical clipping or by endovascular methods. The latter, while having better long-term overall survival than the former, fail to provide complete occlusion of the aneurysm lumen, creating risks for therapy-related adverse events, such as embolic device migration or recanalization. Polyurethane shape memory polymers (SMPs) have the potential to provide patient-specific treatment to reduce rates of incomplete occlusion and mass effect. In this study, SMP matrices are infiltrated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to induce electrical conductivity and provide a precise triggering method for deployment of the embolic device. Through thermomechanical characterization of the composite, it was determined that CNTs play a significant role in resistivity of the SMP foam and its ultimate shape recovery properties. Cyclic mechanical testing allowed to determine that CNTs might induce polymeric matrix damage, creating the need for new approaches to CNT infiltration. The studied composite foams were able to occlude an in vitro idealized aneurysm phantom model, which allowed to conclude that the proposed CNT-infiltrated SMP foams exhibit potential as biomedical devices for endovascular therapy of intracranial aneurysms.

Abstract:
Abstract: The research focuses on the possibility of transferring theoretical ideas of Le Corbusier into educational programs of the very young children – between three and six. The worldwide development of civilization changed the natural environment of the human. For the average European citizen a city is more natural place for living than a forest. Simultaneously, in these days many inhabitants present an extremely conformist approach to life and to the surrounding space. The participation of members of the society in the shaping of public spaces is possible only through the involvement and practice, but the democratic responsibility does not appears out of nowhere. It must be fostered and nurtured as early as in childhood. According to developmental psychology, children in the age of 3-6 are very susceptible to the acquisition of new skills and learn it in an intuitive way. The proper education program using Le Corbusier’s lectures and theory could help them to understand the space better. The seeming simplicity of above rules is an advantage in this case – thereby it can be explained to even such an audience as small children. On the other hand, some kind of abstract and hidden difficulty included in this theory becomes an opportunity to create a very absorbing and stimulating workshops that follow the needs of younger and older children. Le Corbusier’s legacy includes not only physical issues and can be used in many different ways. As Pablo Picasso once stated: every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up. For those reasons, incorporating such an innovative strategy for kids’ education reveals a great potential. Keywords: Architectural education, children, Le Corbusier. Abstract:
Ragging is a deep-seated long-lasting social practice found in the state university system of Sri Lanka. Considering the negative, damaging impacts on physical, psychological, social, cognitive and behavioural aspects of undergraduates, it has been identified as a punishable offence under the Prohibition of Ragging and other forms of violence in educational institutions Act, No. 20 of 1998. Despite the array of harmful effects, ragging has evolved during the past five decades and sustained thus far amidst severe punishments imposed. The objective of the current study was to identify the underlying deep-rooted reasons behind sustenance of ragging in state universities with reference to a selected university (UOX) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In-depth interviews were conducted with a heterogeneous sample (n=20) of volunteers. The study exposed an interconnected feeding system comprised of a minority of significant personnel among freshers, seniors, student unions, staff, administration, industry and political parties who play a decisive role in justifying the need and thereby support the sustenance of ragging. These findings may enable university authorities to find creative and innovative solutions to combat this menace to create a conducive academic environment for the future student community of State Universities in Sri Lanka.

Abstract:
The broad objective of our software, IA-FEMesh is to aid patient-specific finite element (FE) model development. Patient-specific models hold the potential to enable surgeons to plan care using objective analysis-based tools. Thus, they can better evaluate alternate surgical protocols and treatments, thereby contributing to improved surgical outcome. Our previous efforts were focused on projection techniques specific to the geometry under consideration [1]. The current meshing technique is the generalization of projection techniques that builds upon a multi-block approach, with considerable attention given to incorporating interactive tools to ease the model development process, thereby creating a user friendly approach to anatomic modeling.

Abstract:
Articular cartilage degeneration is a central pathological feature of osteoarthritis. Cartilage in the adult does not regenerate in vivo and, as a result, cartilage damage in osteoarthritis is irreversible. With our ever-aging population, osteoarthritis has become a leading cause of disability and unfortunately, no optimal treatments for osteoarthritis are currently available. To address this problem, a research community is focused on the development of both natural and synthetic biodegradable tissue scaffolds. The scaffolds must contain depressions or holes for the purpose of chondrocyte seeding and growth in order to create an implantable construct. In addition to chondrocytes, cartilage tissue consists of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Studies of many tissue types have established that ECM plays an important role in regulating cell behavior and controlling processes such as tissue differentiation and tumor progression. Unlike most natural tissues, adult cartilage ECM is exceptionally dense and lacking in vascularity, which makes it difficult for chondrocytes to be transplanted directly into the matrix. Current methods of creating cell home sites through chemical decellularization of the ECM degrade the mechanical integrity of the cartilage tissue. The research conducted here used a mechanical, rather than chemical, method to create cell home sites. A novel micropunching machine was developed to fabricate 200 μm diameter holes in cartilage, thereby creating a porous natural scaffold while maintaining a healthy ECM. Equine articular cartilage slices were harvested from the cadaver’s back knee joint and cryo-sectioned into 100 μm thick slices. Using die clearances of 3.7%, 6.8%, and 8.9%, the results indicate that micro-scale holes can be mechanically punched in cartilage tissue. The maximum punching force showed a slight trend of decreasing as die clearance increased, but there was no statistical significance. Punching force, as well as hole size, was highly dependent on sample hydration. Upon inspection, the resulting hole sizes were approximately 50 μm to 150 um, indicating 25% to 75% shrinkage in reference to the male punch diameter. Finally, the resulting hole shape was observed to be slightly non-circular and the edges of the hole exhibited a raggedness, which was indicative of the cartilage tearing during hole punching.

Abstract:
Significant efforts are being devoted to the creation of replacement tissue for repair of defects in articular surfaces. Some success has been realized; yet, the normal zonal characterstics of articular cartilage throughout its thickness and normal material properties have not been reproduced in vitro in scaffolds nor in vivo in repairing defects. The fate of such transplanted scaffolds in vivo may be doomed mechanically from the outset if material properties of sufficient quality are not developed. The superficial tangential zone (STZ) has been shown to play a critical role in supporting axial loads and retaining fluids (Glazer and Putz, 2002, Torzilli, et al, 1983, Torzilli, 1993). Previous models have demonstrated excessive axial deformation of repair cartilage without the STZ (Smith, et al 2001, Wayne, et al, 1991) Additionally, modeling the STZ of normal cartilage as transversely isotropic has yielded better agreement with indentation experimental results than isotropic models (Korhonen, et al, 2002, Mow, et al, 2000, Cohen, et al, 1993). This study uses finite element analysis to model the STZ with a preferred direction parallel to the articulating surface, thereby simulating a “split-line” direction. The in-plane directions are modeled normal to the “split-line” direction and the articulating surface. Normal and repairing defects are modeled with the importance of the STZ emphasized.

Abstract:
The interplay of four standard languages and a number of spoken languages makes Malaysia an interesting case of societal multilingualism. There is extensive convergence between the spoken varieties. ‘Malaysian English’ (ME) has developed its own structures which can be shown to copy structures of the mother tongues of the speakers at all levels of grammar, thereby being an example for localisation and the creation of a new dialect/sociolect. An analysis of the basilectal register of ME in ethnic Chinese speakers finds that converging patterns of ME and Malaysian (Chinese) languages, with situational lexical borrowing between the various languages. Sociolinguistically, ME plays the same role as any dialect, with covert prestige as an ingroup (identity) marker which is avoided in acrolectal (outgroup) communication. Spoken English in Malaysia can therefore be seen as a localised creoloid dialect of English, based on linguistic substrates. Sociolinguistically, ME is mainly an orate register for basilectal and mesolectal intra-group communication.

Abstract:
Numerous statements and pamphlets indicate that governments should increase the transparency of ICTimplementations and algorithms in eGovernment services and should encourage democratic control. This paper presents research among civil servants, suppliers and experts who play a role in the automation of spatial policymaking and planning (e.g. environment, building, sound and CO2 regulation, mobility). The case is a major digitalisation programme of that spatial planning in the Netherlands. In this digital transition, the research assumption is that public and political values such as transparency, legitimacy and (perceived) fairness are difficult to validate in the practice of the design process; policy makers tend to lose sight of the algorithms and decision trees designed during the ICT -implementation of eGovernment services. This situation would implicate a power shift towards the system level bureaucrat. i.e., the digitized execution of laws and regulations, thereby threatening democratic control. This also sets the stage for anxiety towards ICT projects and digital bureaucracies. We have investigated perceptions about ‘validation dark spots’ in the design process of the national planning platform that create unintended shifts in decision power in the context of the legal planning process. To identify these validation dark spots, 22 stakeholders were interviewed. The results partially confirm the assumption. Based on the collected data, nine validation dark spots are identified that require more attention and research.

Abstract:
Ruled surfaces play an important role in disciplines such as applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, and architecture. We present a general methodology for creating handheld-sized 3D printed models of such surfaces, which can be useful for educational, research, and design purposes. The process begins with a mathematical description of the surface, either by means of establishing a series of line segment endpoint coordinates followed by a “connect the dots” approach or continuously sweeping a portion of a line throughout 3D space using a time-varying homogeneous transformation, thereby defining an array of line segments on the surface. Next, MATLAB is used to numerically generate the endpoint coordinates which are imported into SolidWorks via Excel and employs a custom macro to permit graphical display of the line segments in a part file. The array of line segments is then stitched together “manually” into a surface, thickened into a part, and printed out in plastic using a 3D printer. The methodology is illustrated for some simple surfaces in addition to several well-known exotic surfaces that have an architectural theme to them. Specifically, we showcase Antoni Gaudi’s conoids and elliptic hyperboloids from La Sagrada Familia, in addition to a twisted circular drum arch and a Solomonic column, both of which are seen in southern European architecture, in particular they are present at either the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens or at The Vatican (includes museum). In summary, the work presented should be of general interest to the 3D printing, ruled surface, and architecture communities.

Abstract:
When helping in the rehabilitation of stroke and head trauma patients, physical therapists often find a need to measure the patient’s control of the muscles in their torso. This is called trunk control. Currently, there are two options for the measurement of trunk control. The first is qualitative analysis by the physical therapist, and the second is large, expensive equipment that measures the patient’s balance. The goal of this project was to create a low cost, quantitative means of measuring trunk control. The device used accelerometers placed on the back of the patient’s neck to measure the angle of the patient’s torso from vertical, as compared to acceleration due to gravity, in both left to right and forward to backward directions. The data taken from the accelerometers is stored on a micro-SD card, which is then inserted into a personal computer and analyzed using software built in the lab. The software produces a graphical representation of the data and displays useful calculations. During the course of the project, careful consideration had to be taken to stay within the bounds of professional ethics from a biomedical point of view. This included restricting the testing of the device and taking patient safety as a primary consideration during the entirety of the design process. Future iterations of the device will include technical and aesthetic improvements based on feedback from a group of physical therapy students who are currently testing the quality of the device’s measurements as well as its integration into a clinical setting. Additionally, a group of business students are constructing a business plan for the marketing and sales of this product.
