Abstract:
Depressive disorders are highly prevalent among persons living with HIV/AIDS. Depressive disorders significantly negatively affects adherence to antiretroviral therapy and HIV viral suppression and is associated with poor quality of life and major impairment in overall functioning. This chapter reviews the prevalence, risk factors, assessment and diagnosis of depressive and bipolar disorders. It also examines the impact of depression on sexual behaviors, adherence to antiretroviral therapy, quality of life, and mortality. This chapter also includes a comprehensive discussion of treatment approaches and considerations for HIV-infected individuals with depressive disorders. Furthermore, it reviews the bipolar disorder spectrum in HIV/AIDS as well as other psychiatric disorders co-occurring with depressive disorders.

Abstract:
Bipolar disorder (BD) in children has received considerable research and clinical attention in the last two decades and remains a challenging disorder to diagnose and treat. This chapter begins by describing the diagnoses included under the bipolar and related disorders section of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and providing guidance regarding developmental differences in symptom presentations and differential diagnosis. It then provides a brief overview of risk factors for bipolar disorder, including genetic, neurobiological, and psychological factors. Assessment tools designed to aide clinicians in diagnosing pediatric bipolar disorder are reviewed, as are empirically validated psychopharmacological and psychosocial treatments. A case example highlights the use of these tools and treatment approaches; finally, directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
The current chapter describes and critically appraises the diagnosis of bipolar disorders in relation to widely used classification systems; namely, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th edition) (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases (10th revision) (ICD-10). In addition, it overviews the diagnostic criteria in relation to the draft version of ICD-11. Patients with bipolar disorder experience extreme fluctuations in mood ranging from depression to mania and, because of the complex nature of the illness, diagnosis remains a clinical challenge. Recent iterations of DSM and ICD have attempted to harmonize taxonomy; however, notable differences remain. These differences are likely to impact the assessment and diagnosis of bipolar disorder and could potentially result in disparate epidemiological findings. Thus, practitioners and researchers alike need to apply careful clinical consideration when assessing those with bipolar disorder.
