Abstract:
Introduction: The world's population is often assailed by crises of various orders. Disasters caused by nature and by humans themselves also impact on people's mental health. Psychological crises, such as suicide attempts, represent a growing problem in mental health. When faced with such scenarios, specific strategies of crisis intervention are both appropriate and necessary. Objective: To conduct a systematic review of the literature dealing with online psychological crisis intervention, describing and discussing their operational design, specific characteristics and applications. Method: A systematic review of literature indexed on the PubMed, PsycINFO, and SciELO databases identified by searches conducted from January to June of 2014. Results: The searches identified 17 empirical studies about online crisis interventions which were reviewed. Three crisis contexts emerged: 1) disasters, 2) risk/prevention of suicide, and 3) trauma. Eleven different intervention programs were described and the predominant treatment approach was cognitive behavioral therapy. The results showed that research into online psychological crisis intervention has been conducted in several different countries, especially the Netherlands and Australia, and that the users of these tools benefit from them. Conclusion: Online crisis interventions have been developed and researched in many countries around the world. In Brazil, there is still a lack of investment and research in this area.

Abstract:
Counseling skills were evaluated in a telephone counseling service for Vietnam veterans. Thirty simulated crisis calls were made to telephone counselors by experienced clinical psychologists. The counselors' responses were rated on dimensions that indexed general counseling skills, knowledge of veteran needs, and provision of appropriate advice. Whereas the majority of callers demonstrated adequate counseling skills, many lacked knowledge of veterans' posttraumatic stress, common veteran terminology, and the nature of veterans' experiences. The findings suggest that telephone counseling services that target specific populations should employ comprehensive training to ensure that counselors possess adequate and relevant knowledge about callers and their presenting problems. The simulated caller paradigm appears to be an effective paradigm for training and evaluation of telephone counselors.

Abstract:
The resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement in response to the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other Black individuals during the summer of 2020 was accompanied by widespread public demonstration and protest. Despite the peaceful nature of most demonstrations, data indicate that protesters experienced police violence at a disproportionate rate compared to demonstrations associated with other movements. Due to the crisis and unrest that undue police violence toward Black communities can cause, it is imperative that counselors identify ways to support communities in their collective acts toward resistance and liberation. This article reviews how counselors can integrate the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies and the American Counseling Association’s Advocacy Competencies into crisis counseling responses that support protesters of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Abstract:
The expectation that police officers can address every need in every situation is daunting and unrealistic. Recognizing this, some police departments have instituted special training or used other resources to better serve the needs of citizens. One example is an on-scene crisis counseling unit comprised of volunteer mental health professionals who respond to calls with police officers. These counselors provide mental health services that police officers cannot. This article explains the usefulness of this type of program, and crisis counseling in general, for both officers and victims as they deal with crises like domestic violence, homicide, suicide, and sexual assault. The study examines survey results from victims and police officers about the impact of this intervention. The data support the helpfulness of the program. Implications and recommendations for further research are included.

Abstract:
Texting-based crisis intervention counseling reaches young people who suffer from mental health issues at high rates yet hesitate to seek help. As a new interface, it is neither well-researched nor well-understood. This study examined 49 randomly selected text counseling transcripts and key informant interviews with two counselors to identify unique characteristics of the text counseling process and learn texter reactions to the sessions. Texters presented problems that were similar to those reported in voice-based hotlines. Texters valued the privacy and flexibility of texting that permitted them to receive help immediately rather than delaying. Counselors reported that they must be brief and direct with questions and avoid assigning emphasis to words. The written format required that both parties must be explicit and clear to convey their messages accurately. Both texters and counselors suggested that the texting option might lead young people to seek help that they might otherwise avoid. Recommendations include specialized training on strategies to assess and connect with texters using only the written word and research to develop best practices for texting-based crisis intervention services.

Abstract:
This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of a counseling supervisory program based on the discrimination model in improving crisis counseling skills for family reform counselors in Jordan. The sample of the study consisted of 30 female and male counselors, who were randomly assigned to two groups: the experimental group (15) male and female counselors received the supervisory program according to the discrimination model with 90-minute 18 weekly sessions over 9 weeks, whereas the control group (15) female and male counselors did not receive the supervisory program. The Family Crisis Skills Scale which consists of 59 items was divided into three subscales: Family Crisis Counseling, Counseling Relation Skills, and Procedures of Intervention & Response to Crisis. It was used with the total sample in the pre-post-test, and in the follow-up test only with experimental group. The results of the study showed that there are statistically significant differences in the overall mean scores of the posttest and all sub-scales of the Family Crisis Skills Scale between the two study group, in favor of the experimental group. Also, the results showed that although the differences between the two groups in the overall mean scores of the post-follow-up test and all sub-scales of the Family Crisis Skills Scale were not statistically significant, there was a positive gain of improvement for the experimental group. These findings suggest that the counselors in the experimental group retained the impact of the program, and provided evidence that the impact of the program was efficient and sustainable.

Abstract:
Crisis applies when an individual experiences a trauma or tense situation that causes imbalance, disorganization and disorientation. Failure to oversee the crisis brings a negative impression to the whole self. This study involved 25 crisis helpers as respondents and all of them are registered counselors in Malaysia. Data are collected through semi structured interviews. The open questions in semi structured interview were used to identify information on 1. the meaning of crisis, 2. the process used to handle crisis intervention; 3. the model of crisis intervention used among helpers. Results showed that respondents’ comprehending of crisis were quite accurate and varied depending on situations experienced. They also had some brief ideas on how the process should be implemented to handle crisis cases. However, only nine out of 25 helpers specifically mentioned that they used models such as Roberts’s seven stages, Gilliland six steps, Kubler Ross, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing to handle crisis intervention cases. Meanwhile, 19 helpers used counseling theories such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Reality Therapy (RT), Psychological First Aid (PFA) and basic attending counseling skills. This study indicates that helpers need more knowledge and training on crisis intervention. They also need to comprehend process to handle crisis intervention cases in appropriate and structured ways. Development of a crisis intervention model that suits Malaysia’s culture would be most preferable and later utilized as a guide for helpers and counselors in dealing with event of crisis.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveThe aims of this study were to assess the awareness of risk for suicidal behaviors and perspectives of Project Recovery counselors who provided crisis counseling services to hurricane survivors.MethodsThe Short Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Rating Interview–Extended, a quantitative disaster mental health measure, was used to assess distress and dysfunction to the recent hurricanes. Project Recovery counselor data were collected through a 22-item qualitative interview.ResultsSeven out of 207 clients (3.4%) endorsed the quantitative item measuring suicidal ideation. Clients who reported suicidal ideation had significantly higher scores on items indicating a loss of enjoyment, feelings of depression, feeling less able to handle stress, and other mental health items. Counselor responses fell into 5 major themes: Assessment and Action, Client Characteristics, Services, Counselor Training and Preparedness, and Future Directions.ConclusionsSuicidal behavior is a serious mental health emergency, yet it remains a challenging issue as suicidal behaviors are complex and disaster survivors with suicidal ideation may experience intense psychological reactions to the event. In order to provide competent care to survivors experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors, the need for counselors to receive adequate training in suicide assessment and management is essential. Abstract:
Background: Optimum infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices are essential for adequate growth and development of infants and children. Malnutrition in children occurs almost entirely during the first two years of life, is virtually irreversible after that. Despite the IYCF guidelines, there is no consistent literature on the prevalence of existing IYCF practices and impact of optimum IYCF practices. This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of existing IYCF practices and to determine the impact of IYCF counseling in children less than 2 years. Methods: A cross-sectional before and after study was done in mother-children dyads (aged 0-24 months). All 125 mother-children dyads were interviewed using prevalidated IYCF questionnaire after obtaining informed consent. The pre-counseling knowledge of mothers, on existing IYCF practices were analyzed using IYCF core and optional indicators. At 6 weeks, the post-counselling knowledge of the mothers was assessed using the same core and optional indicators. Results: Exclusive breastfeeding was seen in 18 of 43 (41.8%) mothers who showed statistically significant improvement to 40 (93%) (p<0.001) after counseling. Children ever breastfed were 62.4%. Predominat breastfeeding was observed in 24%. Initiation of complementary feeding at 6 months of age, improved significantly (p<0.001) post-counseling from 19 mothers (82.6%) to 23 mothers (100%). Minimum dietary diversity improved significantly post counseling, from 23 (28.7%) children to 70 children (87.5%) (p=0.03). Minimum meal frequency was only 22 (48.8%) in breastfed and 8 (22.9%) in non-breastfed children before counseling and improved to 40 (88.9%) in breastfed and 28 (80%) in non-breastfed children (p=0.04). The minimum acceptable diet was given to 2 (4.4%) children aged 6-23 months out of 45 in the breastfed group and on counseling, it improved to 37 (82.23%), which was statistically significant (p<0.001). Among the 35 non-breastfed children, with 2 children aged 6-23 months receiving minimally acceptable diet increased to 28 (80%) post counseling, which was found to be statistically significant (p<0.0001). A significant reduction in bottle feeding was observed from 52 (41.6%) mothers bottle feeding pre counseling, to 18 (1.4%) post counseling (p<0.001).Conclusions: The present study concludes that maternal education on IYCF practices improves their knowledge significantly irrespective of their socioeconomic and education status. Effective IYCF counselling services improve the growth and development of a child. IYCF counselling services provide a critical window of opportunity to tackle the malnutrition crisis and ensure and promote appropriate child growth and survival.
