Abstract:
El texto completo de este trabajo no está disponible en el Repositorio Académico UPC por restricciones de la casa editorial donde ha sido publicado.<br>This chapter discusses some of the challenges faced by tribal libraries. Considering the information provided throughout the rest of this volume, it is clear that some of the core issues-such as poor broadband availability, difficulties in achieving economies of scale, and barriers to collaboration-are shared between tribal institutions and rural libraries throughout the United States. The chapter presents a brief review of the literature on tribal libraries, establishing how they compare with rural public libraries in the United States. The remainder of the chapter is designed as a conversation piece, with responses from interviews with librarians from two tribal libraries detailing how the challenges faced by these outlets parallel those faced by America's rural libraries. • Tribal libraries face obstacles that are common among nontribal rural public libraries, such as poor broadband Internet availability, lack of funding, and geographic barriers that limit patron access. • Although public libraries exist in some tribal communities, other forms of libraries and cultural heritage institutions often fill the service roles that public libraries occupy in nontribal communities. • Public-oriented information institutions in tribal communities commonly preserve and promote tribal heritage, often as one of their primary purposes. Considering that this is often achieved on limited budgets, further documentation of these efforts could be useful for guiding nontribal rural public libraries that wish to do more to preserve and promote their local cultural heritage. This study creates bridges between rural public libraries in the United States and tribal libraries, which are commonly studied as two separate phenomena. Although the authors document how these types of institutions differ from each other in significant ways, barriers of broadband access, geographic isolation, and lack of funding are common across both rural and tribal libraries. The information provided in this chapter shows that both types of institutions need solutions for similar problems.

Blick, Sofia. "Trans Library Experience : A qualitative research of trans experience and identity work in Swedish public libraries." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för ABM, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-398745.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay examines how trans people experience Swedish public libraries, as well as how the library can be an integral part of their trans identity work. The data sample was collected through semi-structured phenomenological interviews with five trans and non-binary library users. The analysis of the interview data was done using the method of thematic analysis (TA), following an inductive approach. The theoretical framework focuses on five different, but connecting, concepts. Mainly, theories about intersectionality; whiteness; the heterosexual matrix; orientation; and categorization. The results of this study show that trans people use and experience the library in a myriad of different ways. It is clear, however, that all the informants look to libraries to provide them with material that they can see themselves represented in, to get a sense of validation for their gender identity. Even though the library provides this in some ways, other aspects connected to libraries function to hinder trans people in their identity work. There are several ways that libraries can improve on their services toward trans patrons, and one of these are to better facilitate meetings between different trans people through more activities catering towards this group. In short, libraries need to be mindful about this specific group both when it comes to the services they offer, as well as the physical layout of the library space. These are all aspects which affect and influence trans people and their ability to construct and express their gender identity.<br>Den här uppsatsen undersöker hur transpersoner upplever Svenska folkbibliotek, och dessutom hur biblioteken kan fungera som en viktig faktor i deras identitetsarbete.

Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence Lab, Department of MIS, University of Arizona<br>The National Science Digital Library (NSDL), launched in December 2002, is emerging as a center of innovation in digital libraries as applied to education. As a part of this extensive project, the GetSmart system was created to apply knowledge management techniques in a learning environment. The design of the system is based on an analysis of learning theory and the information search process. Its key notion is the integration of search tools and curriculum support with concept mapping. More than 100 students at the University of Arizona and Virginia Tech used the system in the fall of 2002. A database of more than one thousand student-prepared concept maps has been collected with more than forty thousand relationships expressed in semantic, graphical, node-link representations. Preliminary analysis of the collected data is revealing interesting knowledge representation patterns.

Abstract:
This paper summarizes the experience of the Psychological Brigades conducted in 2001 in response to an earthquake that battered the southern part of the country, causing countless human and material losses and leaving over 200 thousand victims. The brigades gathered about 100 people among faculty members, students and graduated students from the Department of Psychology of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, who went to the affected areas to provide psychological support. The complete intervention is presented, including the design previous to the intervention, techniques used during the intervention and the evaluation of the results. These include the impact on the assisted population, the factors that contributed to the intervention success, as well as the impact on the brigades’ members. The assisted population specially remarks the value of feeling heard and accompanied, and of having a space to talk and meditate about its experience, fears and fantasies.<br>El presente trabajo resume la experiencia de las Brigadas Psicológicas llevadas a cabo en el año 2001 como respuesta al terremoto que azotó al sur del país, causando innumerables pérdidas humanas y materiales y más de doscientos mil damnificados. Polyakov, Serhiy. "Enhancing User Search Experience in Digital Libraries with Rotated Latent Semantic Indexing." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2015. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc804881/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates a semi-automatic method for creation of topical labels representing the topical concepts in information objects. The method is called rotated latent semantic indexing (rLSI). rLSI has found application in text mining but has not been used for topical labels generation in digital libraries (DLs). The present study proposes a theoretical model and an evaluation framework which are based on the LSA theory of meaning and investigates rLSI in a DL environment. The proposed evaluation framework for rLSI topical labels is focused on human-information search behavior and satisfaction measures. The experimental systems that utilize those topical labels were built for the purposes of evaluating user satisfaction with the search process. A new instrument was developed for this study and the experiment showed high reliability of the measurement scales and confirmed the construct validity. Data was collected through the information search tasks performed by 122 participants using two experimental systems. A quantitative method of analysis, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), was used to test a set of research hypotheses and to answer research questions. The results showed a not significant, indirect effect of topical label type on both guidance and satisfaction. The conclusion of the study is that topical labels generated using rLSI provide the same levels of alignment, guidance, and satisfaction with the search process as topical labels created by the professional indexers using best practices.

Elliott, Burns Raylee Ann. "Voices of experience : opportunities to influence creatively the designing of school libraries." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2011. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/48974/1/Raylee_Elliott_Burns_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Using a critical ethnographic approach this study investigates the potential for multiple voices of experience, of educators, designers/architects, education facility planners and students/learners, to influence creatively the designing of school libraries. School libraries are considered as social and cultural entities within the contexts of school life and of wider society. It is proposed that school library designing is a social interaction of concern to those influenced by its practices and outcomes. School library designing is therefore of significance to educators and students as well as to those with professionally accredited involvement in school library designing, such as designers/architects and education facility planners. The study contends that current approaches to educational space designing, including school libraries, amplify the voices of accredited designers and diminish or silence the voices of the user participants. The study is conceptualised as creative processes of discovery, through which attention is paid to the voices of experience of user and designer participants, and is concerned with their understandings and experiences of school libraries and their understandings and experiences of designing. Grounded theory coding (Charmaz) is used for initial categorising of interview data. Critical discourse analysis (CDA, Fairclough) is used as analytical tool for reflection on the literature and for analysis of the small stories gathered through semi-structured interviews, field observations and documents. The critical interpretive stance taken through CDA, enables discussions of aspects of power associated with the understandings and experiences of participants, and for recognition of creative possibilities and creative influence within and beyond current conditions. Through an emphasis on prospects for educators and students as makers of the spaces and places of learning, in particular in school libraries, the study has the potential to inform education facility designing practices and design participant relationships, and to contribute more broadly to knowledge in the fields of education, design, architecture, and education facility planning.

Full text
Abstract:
Preserving long-term access to digital information resources is one of the key challenges facing libraries and information centers today. The University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries has entered into partnership agreements with federal and state agencies to ensure permanent storage and public access to a variety of government information sources. As digital resource preservation encompasses a wide variety of interrelated activities, the UNT Libraries are taking a phased approach to ensure the long-term access to its digital resources. Formulation of preservation policy and creation of preservation metadata for electronic files and digital collections are among the most important steps. This paper discusses the issues related to digital resources preservation and demonstrates the role of preservation metadata in facilitating the preservation activities in general. In particular, it describes the efforts being made by the UNT libraries to ensure the long-term access and preservation of various digital information resources.

Full text
Abstract:
Online searchers in Australia were studied through six sets of variables: backgrounds, experience, attitudes, behaviours, styles and satisfaction. A mailed questionnaire attracted a response rate of 84.5 per cent. Respondents were drawn equally from academic and special libraries. Those in special libraries tended to be more satisfied with their searches, and favoured adaptability but not preplanning. Those whose organisations levied charges appeared to search less often and to have less faith in controlled vocabularies. A minority with computational backgrounds tended to have more searching experience. Many respondents searched infrequently and had conducted low total numbers of searches. Those searching more often were less cost conscious, and more in favour of trial-and-error and reviewing retrieved titles. Searchers who had conducted more searches favoured trial-and-error , browsing and reviewing retrieved titles. Controlled vocabularies, adaptability (related to a disinclination to review retrieved titles), trial-and-error and browsing were favoured . Fidel's conceptualist style tended to be adopted by those favouring trial-and-error. Her operationalist style was considered routine and positively related to perceived user satisfaction with searches. Some concern about cost was related to a tendency to plan alternative strategies.

Abstract:
<p> Research has shown the recent worldwide economic crises that began in 2007 was partially initiated from lending practices widely utilized in the subprime mortgage industry. The purpose of this study was to gain a greater understanding of the loan officers' perspective on how subprime lending practices contributed to increased foreclosures, the devaluation of housing prices, and the impact of the recent governmental regulations on mortgage lending. Qualitative phenomenology was utilized in this study to explore lived-experiences and meaning loan officers have giving to the rise and fall of the subprime mortgage phenomenon. The participants in this study were contacted via e-mail through data obtain from the National Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) website. Twenty-two in-person open-ended interviews were conducted with actively licensed loan officers who had been in the mortgage industry for a minimum of 10 years. The results of this phenomenological study inquiry identified several variables that appear to shape loan officers' attitudes and beliefs on the future of the mortgage industry. Eight main influential themes were identified by the participants which included: (1) The Dodd-Frank Act, (2) decreased income, (3) increased qualification standards, (4) decreased loan programs, (5) increased confusion and consumer frustration, (6) increased paperwork, (7) decreased competition, and (8) fear of future restrictive legislation. The findings of this study demonstrate the significance and long-term impact of subprime lending practices on the future of the mortgage industry.</p>

Abstract:
This thesis explores the experience – experience itself – of the economic crisis in Iceland 2008. This exploration takes its starting point in personal stories that together form a mythic narrative about the crisis in which the causes of the crisis are retroactively invented through the construction of a phantasmagoria. Since the reason for the stories peculiar form – their retroactive invention of the crisis’ causes – cannot be accounted for by the stories themselves, the stories are approached a symptoms of an experience that for some reason is articulated through a myth, rather than with the language of political economy, and this despite the fact that their narrators have experienced the consequences of a collapsed economic system. This thesis attempt to trace and formulate the experience that has given the personal stories illustrated in this thesis their mythic form.

Ridley, David. "Political and industrial crisis : the experience of the Tyne and Wear pitmen, 1831-1832." Thesis, Durham University, 1994. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5366/.

Full text
Abstract:
/The coalfield of North East England was at the forefront of the industrial revolution in the early nineteenth century, in terms of both technological expertise and managerial experience in business practice. Labour relations were a source of intermittent conflict, and the conjunction of industrial unrest at the collieries, a major cholera epidemic, and the parliamentary reform campaign of 1831-1832, brought an unusual crisis. Prompted by economic deterioration, a new Tyne and Wear pitmen’s union, known after its chairman as 'Hepburn's Union', conducted a successful coal strike in the summer of 1831. But as the pitmen consolidated their victory, the House of Lords' rejection in October 1831 of a second parliamentary Reform Bill caused a major outcry, and locally raised the profile of the 'Northern Political Union', a Newcastle-based pressure group embracing all shades of pro-reform opinion. Many local pitmen gave demonstrable support to the NPU, not least at its May 1832 reform meeting in Newcastle. Meanwhile however, the previously complacent coal owners had consciously set out to destroy the pitmen's union, and after establishing an indemnity fund, provoked the pitmen into strike action in April 1832. The resultant dispute was marked by evictions, the recruitment of outside labour, and by violence and even murder: but with state support from the army, navy, and magistrates, and financial and moral support from local bankers and newspapers, by mid-September 1832 the pitmen's resistance was broken. Along with their leaders' interest in attempts to form general industrial unions, the pitmen's support for parliamentary reform during 1831-1832 suggests the political and industrial aspects of their behaviour were not mutually exclusive, but overlapping and complementary. And though ultimately defeated, Hepburn's Union was most significant in that it became a model for subsequent pitmen's unions.

The spread of SARS lead to a rapidly deteriorating and chaotic situation. Because SARS was a new infection, there was no prior knowledge that could be referenced to tackle such a complex, unknown and rapidly changing problem. Fortunately, through sound measures coupled with good leadership, quick action and inter-agency cooperation, the situation was quickly brought under control. This thesis uses the SARS incident as a case study to identify a set of network centric warfare methodologies and technologies that can be leveraged to facilitate the understanding and management of complex and rapidly changing situations. Monroy, Mijael Jimenez. "Experience and the crisis of tradition : history, memory and practice in the philosophy of Walter Benjamin." Thesis, Kingston University, 2017. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/41279/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the notion of experience in the philosophy of Walter Benjamin. It focuses on the relationship between its constructive and disruptive features in four facets of Benjamin’s work, starting with the early writings dedicated to history and tradition and then moving towards different analyses of the reception of the work of art in modernity. Chapter I examines Benjamin’s early characterisation of experience on the basis of the transmissibility of tradition and suggests that the constructive character of experience manifests in the historical development of knowledge and truth in language. Chapter II is dedicated to The Origin of the German Mourning-Play and the shift towards an examination of the development of language from the perspective of the moments of rupture, forgetting and those deviations inherent in the transmissibility of tradition. I argue that experience appears immanently in the momentary suspension or interruption of the transmissibility of tradition: origin and allegory serve to characterise the double movement of concentrating the totality of tradition and suspending its objectivity. The ‘shattering of tradition’ that Benjamin regards to be the hallmark of modernity in his later writings is located within this dynamics. This shattering undermines the conditions for understanding the conflict out of which the present emerges, thereby producing a historiographic crisis which unsettles experience. Chapter III examines modern epic narration and the resources it develops to contests the forgetting which informs late capitalism. I specifically discuss the method of montage and the fragmentary memory associated with it to suggest that Benjamin looks at history from the standpoint of memory rather than from the perspective of tradition. Chapter IV discuses the radicalisation of the forgetting informing modernity and the possibility of developing, though momentarily, an equilibrium or interplay between technology and sensibility by means of long-term practice formed according to technical reproducibility and the principle of montage. It is finally argued that despite Benjamin’s constant emphasis on its destructive character, experience necessarily entails a cumulative or constructive dimension which Benjamin reformulates throughout his authorship in terms of tradition, memory and practice.

Abstract:
The relationship of language and culture is explored in this thesis for the purpose of better understanding why all sojourners, regardless of preparation, experience some degree of culture shock. The author begins with a review of literature on culture shock establishing that the native language of sojourners is not considered to be of any consequence to the sojourning experience. The fields of intercultural communication, social psychology and psychology are then explored to establish the link between language and culture and to introduce the notion of linguistic identity. Evidence found in each of these fields leads the author to conclude that linguistic identity must become a focal point of language instruction and that both language and linguistic identity must be addressed more effectively in pre-departure orientations. Also included is a research proposal which is designed to test pre-departure orientation strategies which introduce students to linguistic identity and to track their transition experiences over the course of a year-long study abroad sojourn.

Appling, Tania Yvette. "Juvenile Correctional Officers' Experience Using De-escalation Strategies." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6161.

Full text
Abstract:
Juvenile direct-care officers working in juvenile correctional facilities historically responded to critical and potentially aggressive incidents using nontherapeutic strategies. The purpose of this study was to examine and to understand the lived experiences of direct-care officers' use of de-escalation skills for managing violent and disruptive behaviors in juvenile correctional facilities. The findings from this study may add to the existing literature by describing juvenile correctional officers' experiences as well as to better understand their perceptions and attitude using de-escalation strategies in correctional environments. The social learning and self-efficacy theories provided the conceptual framework to examine and understand their experiences. The phenomenological design was used to examine the lived experiences of 9 juvenile direct-care officers use of de-escalation strategies to respond to disruptive and aggressive incidents within the juvenile correctional facility. The 9 direct-care officers participated in audio-recorded interviews that were transcribed and analyzed using Moustakas's phenomenological steps that identified 3 themes using de-escalation strategies: to avoid use of force and reduce liability of injuries; to resolve conflicts using their words to de-escalate the youth or the situation; and to use according to their training, perceived level of confidence, and effectiveness of de-escalation strategies. Understanding direct-care officers' perceptions of use of de-escalation may result in positive social change for fostering caring and safe living correctional environments and strengthen current training curriculums for working with aggressive and disruptive behaviors.

Abstract:
This study is centred on transformation towards sustainable living. It investigated how global education prepares learners to live a sustainable lifestyle. To explore this area, the concept of sustainability, global education and transformative learning were critically examined, with a view to finding their relationships. Literature on sustainability, transformative learning and global education were reviewed to find out how their relationships impact on international students learning about sustainable living. The focus of the thesis is on environmental sustainability, especially through management of anthropogenic factors. The mixed methods research, involving the collection of quantitative and qualitative data was employed for the study. Quantitative data collection was done using survey instruments while qualitative data collection was through face-to-face interview of research participants. Each set of data was collected and analysed separately. The outcomes of the analysis of the two sets of data were integrated at the stage of discussion of findings. The aim of the study was to find out whether global education transforms learners towards sustainable living. Findings from the study showed that global education field transforms students towards sustainable living. Evidence from the study suggests that global education help students to acquire the skills and knowledge required for living sustainably. Also, the actions and behaviours of international students were found to be influenced more towards sustainable lifestyle than those from the host country. The degree of transformation students experience was measured by attitude change, intention to change and actions of students toward the environment. This study contributed to the conceptual understanding of the relationship between global education and transformation of learners towards sustainable living. It made both theoretical and practical contribution to knowledge. The findings from the study will be of benefit to different impact groups. These groups include business organisations, policy makers in government, educational institutions, and individuals.

Full text
Abstract:
A recent phenomenon within the library sector is that of User Experience (UX). Library and information practitioners are increasingly leaning towards letting their users help guide and organise library services by using UX methods to both evaluate existing services and to create new ones. Despite that an increased number of academic librarians are focusing on researching their Library UX, few studies have been done on this phenomenon, and none have focused on a Swedish context. In this thesis, the emerging phenomenon of Library UX is investigated by performing a qualitative case study at two academic libraries in Sweden. The posed research questions focus on four areas: what impacts the implementations of UX methods have on an academic library, how UX methods are learnt, if this new emphasis on Library UX will affect the user-librarian relationship and if something can be said about the future of Library UX. The main theory used is Actor-Network Theory (ANT), which together with the use of the Foucauldian perspective on knowledge/power has been employed to analyse the collected empirical data to further the understanding of the phenomenon. The findings are divided into two parts. Firstly, the case study depicting the results of the collected empirical data. Secondly, the ANT-analysis of the Library UX network is presented, which is based on the data collected in the case study. The main conclusions that can be drawn from this study are how UX methods are perceived by the informants as leading to improved library services. There is also a clear consensus among the informants on how the new perspective of the user presented within the Library UX framework will deepen the user centred focus even further at the libraries. Furthermore, the ANT-analysis shows how the phenomenon has primarily emerged through advocacy and how advocates have a central role in how knowledge about Library UX and UX methods are spread within the library world.<br>Ett nytt fenomen inom bibliotekssektorn är User Experience (UX).

Abstract:
The study explored the opportunities, the experience, developments and challenges of academic library automation, with a perspective from Anglophone West Africa, Ghana Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Liberia. Literature was triangulated with empirical data to ascertain whether the same elements were present for the resultant countries. Questionnaires were used for the empirical data whilst the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method was adopted for the secondary data. Findings revealed that majority of the libraries were at different stages in the automation process. The challenges and opportunities discovered were not different from one country to the other. Increased access to a wider range of formats, increased resource sharing resulting from Inter Library Loan (ILL), effective and efficient service, increased visibility, fast and convenient service, searchability and discoverability were identified as some of the opportunities. Development such as the application of open source software, discovery as a search tool, cloud computing, consortia, data security, gamification, Resource Description Access (RDA) and application of mobile devices were gradually exploited by Anglophone West African academic libraries. Some of the challenges that were discovered include; poor internet connectivity, inadequate technical expertise to manage automated systems, lack of computers, poor cooperation, erratic power supply, inadequate project management skills amongst other. Recommendations identified to manage the challenges were increased bandwidth to improve internet connectivity, provision of adequate power supply, availability of systems librarians, increased collaboration and consortia, application of project management skills, and capacity of librarians in the areas of advanced Information Communication Technology (ICT) applications.<br>Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2015.<br>Information Science<br>MIT<br>Unrestricted

Full text
Abstract:
The empirical aim of this heuristic study was to explore the psychotherapeutic experiences of those with a ‘schizophrenia’ diagnosis. The epistemological aim was to deconstruct the structures of knowledge underpinning the diagnosis. The ‘personal knowledge’ drawn from the researcher’s own experience of working as a psychotherapist and filmmaker with individuals who had the diagnosis, and of being a psychiatric patient in the past, was used as a way of furthering these aims. Along with the work of Moustakas and Polanyi, key discourses used were Heidegger, Laing and contemporary critical clinical discourses. Eight participants with a ‘schizophrenia’ diagnosis took part in open-ended, conversational interviews that yielded substantial detail about the phenomenon. A multiperspective chronological narrative of early life experience, ‘schizophrenic’ breakdown, treatment and recovery emerged during the analysis of data, and is preserved in the composite depiction of the group experience. It was found that exploring the meaningfulness of experiences was a core driver of recovery, and psychotherapy was most helpful when it facilitated this exploration. By contrast, psychotherapy, and treatment as a whole, that obstructed this exploration were found unhelpful. These findings led to the argument that, what is termed ‘personal meaning’, may be a key factor in recovery from ‘schizophrenia’, and psychotherapy that was helpful seemed characterised by Heidegger’s concept of ‘anticipating care’. Treatment governed by ‘medical meaning’ and ‘intervening care’, meanwhile, are argued to prolong a crisis of ‘personal meaning’, and potentially facilitate an ‘acute’ phase of ‘schizophrenia’, rather than recovery. This conclusion raises critical questions about NICE guidelines for ‘schizophrenia’, which seem rooted in ‘medical meaning intervening care’. As well as facilitating an ‘understanding’ approach (in Heidegger’s sense) to researching experience, one key outcome arising from the researcher’s autobiographical connection to the research was learning more about his own experiences, and how to speak about them.

Abstract:
The year 2014 will mark the centennial of the outbreak of World War I in August 1914. This historic anniversary will likely provoke several discussions from all fields in the humanities concerning the Great War's significance on contemporary culture through history, visual art, and in the case of this essay: literature. In light of this event, any serious discussion among scholars should undeniably begin with how the war continues to be represented today through a thorough, contemporary analysis of its many key literary texts. This essay will examine, in this regard, how past and contemporary discourses in literary theory-primarily concerned with how an individual combatant subject attempts to construct and understand their own traumatic experiences through poetic and literary discourse-can continue to incite discussion on why literature of the Great War and its influential role in defining how it has come to be understood in our cultural memory remains relevant even today. Under the guiding influence of Paul Fussell's classic The Great War and Modern Memory, I will discuss how three important works-a poetry collection, a memoir, and a modern work of historical fiction-all contribute to how the war has become represented as a tragic rupture in history that reversed the idea of human progress and left an entire generation disillusioned in its aftermath, regardless of the historical veracity of this legacy. The texts I will be examining include: select poems of Wilfred Owen, Goodbye to All That by Robert Graves, and Regeneration by Pat Barker. In addition to this, I will conclude with an analysis of how a contemporary reading of these texts can contribute to a larger discussion of the crisis of historicity in our current post-modern cultural landscape.<br>B.A.<br>Bachelors<br>English<br>Arts and Humanities

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to examine the challenges faced by the highly skilled migrant professionals and managers from South Asia as they attempt to advance their careers in Australia. Existing literature reveals a gap between skilled migration policies and responses to those policies by organisations; for example, the non-recognition of overseas acquired skills and qualifications. This thesis explores the nature of the migrant experience paying particular attention to occupational progress. In this thesis, the theory of habitus is employed as a framework for analysis. A person’s habitus is composed of cultural, social and economic capital that, together, form the particular social space that they occupy within certain social conditions – in this case, occupation and career. To support the analysis, disembedding, sense making and acculturation are utilised to help conceptualise the issues relating to the alteration of the occupational/career space brought on by migration. In employing a mixed method research strategy, this thesis combines two qualitative methodologies of phenomenology and analysis of narratives in the collection and analysis of data. The initial stage of the research was to establish an understanding of the ‘home country habitus'. To achieve this, field observation data was collected in Pakistan. The main data collection consisted of in-depth, semi-structured interviews that continued until the data was saturated. In total, twenty-one South Asian migrants fitting the selection criteria were interviewed. The analysis reveals that upon migration, people are uprooted from their inherited social conditions and thrust into new social conditions creating a 'crisis of habitus' characterised here as being a state of 'disembeddedness'. Social capital is lost, economic capital is depleted and cultural capital is transformed in unexpected ways. This prompts attempts at reconciling the crisis, through sense making and, following this, acculturation. The analysis also brings to light that gender is a significant factor in the shaping of this process. It was found that women face more barriers than their male counterparts. While this research is limited to South Asians in an Australian context, it raises some interesting questions worthy of further research in other national contexts and with other migrant groups. It has brought into focus previously unexamined avenues of research and brings to light new theoretical insights. It also has the potential to raise awareness amongst policy makers and business organisations to help them in their quest to recruit and retain skilled and qualified people.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to explore the importance of library design to students, whether the interior design of a library has any effect on their experience when using its services, and what the students themselves believe is most important for the library to do to stay afloat in a society that is constantly evolving and becoming more digital. The study will also bring up UX (User Experience) as a method for library design. The theories used in this study are the third place theory, as well as a comparison to the ideals of the Learning Commons model. In order to find out how the students view the library and the impact of its design, five interviews with five different students at Linneaus University in Växjö were conducted. The results show that the library generally inspires the students to feel motivated and at ease in a place that is comfortable and safe. It also shows that the design and the general atmosphere of the library does play a specific role in the students’ overall experience of the library as it impacts many of the choices they make while they’re there, such as where to sit or which places to avoid. The majority of the students are mostly happy with the library as it is except for minor inconveniences, and merely wishes for the library to continue in the same way in the future while adapting to any new changes that may come in its way.

The dissertation investigates suitable living environments for the healing and rehabilitation of people in crisis in South Africa, focusing on the human experience of space. Through the understanding of the problem and the context, the product of the investigation is a shelter for the homeless in the city of Tshwane. The shelter can be defined as transitional housing for the adult urban homeless and their children, which focuses on the healing and ultimate rehabilitation of homeless people, including the reintegration of these people into society. The significance of the project is that the development becomes a metaphor for the reintegration of people into society. The project aims to empower people to become contributing members of society and discontinues the cycle of destitution by providing an opportunity for economic activity and by improving the physical environment of the homeless as well as the physical environment of the community in general.<br>Mini Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2010.<br>Architecture<br>unrestricted

Full text
Abstract:
The major aim of this research is to investigate the changing role of the state in South Korea (henceforth Korea) after the financial crisis of 1997. Considering the complexity of Korean dynamics in this period, the change in financial systems and the country’s developmental state will be the main points of focus. In order to analyse the main focus of thesis, the research will be simply the process of answering to the questions of, “What has been essential to both state definition and finance in Korea?” and, therefore, “How essential is the state’s definition and the role of the state in finance when examining how far Korean state has changed in the aftermath of the 1997 financial crisis?” In this thesis the core question is this: “How has the Korean developmental state changed since the 1997 financial crisis? And has this change influenced the role of the state in finance as well as the structure of the state bureaucracy?” In Korea, as a representative structure of developmental states, the financial system was a kernel of the state-leading developmental plans; in other words, it is how the state could control over ‘capital’ and execute ‘industrial policy’ for the state’s aim of economic development. Two subordinate issues therefore need to be raised to figure out the outline of the process of the changing role of the state before and after the financial crisis: “Whether state’s purpose to reinstate its crucial role by restoring the attributes of a developmental state through the public fund after the 1997 crisis was successful or not” and “what was the direction of the financial supervision system reform after the 1997 financial crisis in Korea? And was the direction matched the goal pursued by the state?” Before the 1997 crisis, Korean developmental state had already been changing in many ways; the success of economic development raised the issue of different roles of the state to previous ‘strong’, ‘economy-centred’ and ‘coercive’ role of the state. However, it is true that the financial crisis accelerated this issue as a crucial subject of the developmental state theory. As Korea has been transformed to different types of state, changing roles of the state has been inevitably required after the financial crisis. Under this situation, this thesis will conduct some empirical researches to find answers to the main question and subordinate questions.

Abstract:
Nyckelord: Akutsjukvård, krisstöd, sjuksköterskor, särskilt påfrestande händelser, upplevelser.<br>ABSTRACT Background: Emergency medical care has undergone major changes in recent decades which have led to increased demands on nurses. The clinically active registered nurses in emergency care are daily exposed to stressful events and stress in their work. Some of these events can be experienced as particularly stressful and can lead to need for crisis support in various forms. To counteract stress related sequelae, various forms of emergency support is used. Objective: The aim of the study was to identify what nurses in emergency care experience as a particularly stressful event, how often it occurs and what type of crisis support that was offered. The study also examined whether the nursing practical was affected and the employer approach to crisis support and the nurses thought that it could be improved. Method: A quantitative survey with qualitative elements was chosen as a data collection method. 198 questionnaires were sent to nurses in the ambulance and two emergency departments in a county in Sweden.100 questionnaires were received, the response rate was 51%. A simpler form of content analysis with descriptive appropriation was used for data analysis. Results: 55% of nurses in emergency care have been in need of crisis support due to events related to the work. The result showed that several situations experienced as particularly stressful events. By far the two most mentioned events include situations with children and young people. The result shows that the need for crisis support was strongly associated with number of years worked, the need was greater the longer they worked. Social support from colleagues was the assistance that respondents preferred after a stressful event. Conclusion: Particularly stressful events for nurses in emergency care are common, the need for crisis support is strongly linked with number of years in the profession. No significant difference between men and women were present. It was rarely difficult to perform nursing work after a stressful event. Social support from colleagues was considered to be the best support. Keywords: Crisis support ,emergency care, nurses, experiences, stressfull events.
