Gustafsson, Maria, Daniel Andersson, and André Waldén. "How a bank organization handles robberies - A question of crisis management." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, EMM (Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Management), 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-12.

Abstract:

Organizations are in today’s business society faced with an increasing number of crises. The knowledge about how to manage a crisis has become an important tool for competitive advantage. The question is no longer if or when an organization will experience a crisis, but rather in what form and how prepared it is when a crisis actually occurs.

The many networks of today’s business society make organizations even more vulnerable to the possibility of indirectly being affected by a crisis. This paper focuses on the banking industry as banks form an important part of many business networks. Furthermore, focus is put on the immediate form of a crisis and specifically robberies. The immediate crisis reflects the importance for an organization to be prepared as the immediate crisis by its nature gives little or no warning, following that it is more difficult to prevent these types of crises. The banking industry is often discussed in terms of stability and security whereas the crisis brings instability and uncertainty and challenges the organization’s structure.

The purpose of this thesis is to understand how and why crisis management concerning robberies is implemented within a bank organization. This paper looks into the current theories discussed in the literature and the field of crisis management, the authors have chosen a qualitative approach and have performed a number of interviews, both with internal and external parties.

Through the research performed the conclusion was drawn that the bank organization is very professional in their handling of crisis management concerning robberies. The bank has identified the importance of having a well prepared plan as a crisis situation such as robbery occur and the policies on crisis management concerning robberies has, for an extensive time period, continuously been processed and developed. The policies developed include all aspects of a crisis, both educational program in the Pre-crisis stage, aspects to consider and how to act when a robbery occurs, and also how the organization responds in the Post-crisis stage. The bank organization has in their approach chosen to a great extent to handle the work with crisis management internally. It was concluded that, since the bank organization has, during an extensive period of time, identified the risk of being robbed as a constantly relevant issue, the policies has been processed and developed repeatedly to cover all aspects of a crisis. The implementation of the policies is in the Pre-crisis and Crisis stage performed without any flexibility as they are explicit in their design and covers every aspect of a crisis. Contrary, the implementation in the Post-crisis stage has a more flexible approach as the Crisis group is working with people that experiences a situation of trauma. It is acknowledged that the bank organization is following the different stages of crisis in their policies, dividing the responsibility of the implementation of crisis management in each and every stage.

Fryer, Anthony Raymond. "Effective secondary principal decision-making during crisis situations." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/198880.

Abstract:
These qualitative case studies explore the experiences of leaders of local and international secondary schools in Hong Kong. The research questions guiding this study centre on Principal leadership during times of crisis and sought to explore how crisis was managed effectively and how if faced with a similar crisis could be improved. The author was interested in finding a similarity between the participant’s responses and whether external influences may have played a significant part their decision-making. The study also explores the relationship of leadership under crisis communication between Principal and staff and Principal and parents. The primary focus of this research is to understand if there was anything learnt during these crisis experiences among the participants as they relate to leadership development. The analysis of data resulted in the emergence of six primary themes: 1) the impact and extent of effective decision making under crises, 2) the quality of leadership after crisis experience and the ensuing consideration of what leadership means, 3) the role of teachers and administrators throughout the crisis, 4) the experiences related to improved leadership development and 5) correct communication among stakeholders, parents, students and staff. These themes were synthesized into three areas of discussion. First, the experiences and perspectives of the participants offer a unique, first hand, framework for exploring what leadership means in a time of crisis. Second, these same experiences begin to shed new light on the role of Principals in times of crisis. Third, the participants’ reflections on experiences related to leadership development provide a bridge between the ideas related to how leadership is learned and how these experiences become meaningful during times of crisis. The results reflect a need for further qualitative research into Principal crisis leadership as well as the opportunity to further examine the leadership role of educational leaders in crisis situations.

Larsen, Tulinda Deegan. "A Behavioral Framework for Managing Massive Airline Flight Disruptions through Crisis Management, Organization Development, and Organization Learning." Thesis, University of Maryland University College, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3588457.

Full text
Abstract:

In this study the researcher provides a behavioral framework for managing massive airline flight disruptions (MAFD) in the United States. Under conditions of MAFD, multiple flights are disrupted throughout the airline's route network, customer service is negatively affected, additional costs are created for airlines, and governments intervene. This study is different from other studies relating to MAFD that have focused on the operational, technical, economic, financial, and customer service impacts. The researcher argues that airlines could improve the management of events that led to MAFD by applying the principles of crisis management where the entire organization is mobilized, rather than one department, adapting organization development (OD) interventions to implement change and organization learning (OL) processes to create culture of innovation, resulting in sustainable improvement in customer service, cost reductions, and mitigation of government intervention. At the intersection of crisis management, OD, and OL, the researcher has developed a new conceptual framework that enhances the resiliency of individuals and organizations in responding to unexpected-yet-recurring crises (e.g., MAFD) that impact operations. The researcher has adapted and augmented Lalonde's framework for managing crises through OD interventions by including OL processes. The OD interventions, coupled with OL, provide a framework for airline leaders to manage more effectively events that result in MAFD with the goal of improving passenger satisfaction, reducing costs, and preventing further government intervention. Further research is warranted to apply this conceptual framework to unexpected-yet-recurring crises that affect operations in other industries.

Dhlamini, Phumelele Tracy. "The World Trade Organization (WTO) Appellate Body crisis: A critical analysis." Master's thesis, Faculty of Law, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/33713.

Full text
Abstract:
The World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement system is facing unprecedented challenges, following the United States (US) decision to block the appointment of all Appellate Body members. The US has justified its blocking tactic, already implemented since 2017 by raising several procedural and substantive concerns with the Appellate Body's failure to follow WTO rules. On 10 December 2019, the Appellate Body was forced to suspend its activities after the second terms of two of the remaining three members expired. While the WTO dispute settlement system continues to function at the panel stage, the Appellate Body is currently unable to review appeals because it lacks the minimum number of three members required to establish a division. In addition, the collapse of the Appellate Body means that any party to a dispute can block the adoption of a panel report by filing a notice to appeal which is likely to remain in limbo for an indefinite period. Numerous studies have discussed the Appellate Body crisis and its implications for the WTO dispute settlement system. Few, however, have critically analysed the validity of the concerns that the US has raised about the Appellate Body's work over the past few years. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to discuss and critically analyse these concerns to determine whether the Appellate Body has indeed strayed from its limited mandate. In addition, the research will provide recommendations on how to save the appellate stage and ensure that appeals are resolved while WTO members attempt to find permanent solutions to this unprecedented crisis.

Reputation is considered the most important asset of companies. It enables to set up business relationship and ensure the good functioning of the organization. When an unexpected even crops up, reputation could be threatened. Managers, leaders of the organization, need to demonstrate reactivity, a capacity of responding to stakeholders‟ requirements and a capacity to detect and to rectify faults within the organization through a learning process, in order to avoid negative consequences. The latter could tarnish reputation and impact the operational development of the company. Through crisis communication, we observed that Air France adopted different postures after the crash of the flight 447. These ones were adapted to stakeholders‟ requirements and to the degree of threat that the company suffered. Just after the accident, the company decided to use the recognition strategy by assuming a symbolic responsibility and by communicating uppermost to the families of victims and to the media. The following weeks, the company privileged the strategy of silence which consists in not to communicate directly with the media. Finally, Air France used the 'scapegoat' strategy when the company was subjected to direct attacks. Companies‟ reactions summed up to the advance of the ongoing judiciary investigation revealed 'historical' organizational faults within the company, as for instance, the lack of communication between pilots and managers or the managers technical and operational insensitivity. Although internal and external issues, Air France demonstrated that a well managed crisis communication limits financial and reputational impacts. Consequently, the company suffers limited negative consequences of this crisis.

Kornberger, Martin, Stephan Leixnering, Renate Meyer, and Markus Höllerer. "Rethinking the sharing economy: The nature and organization of sharing in the 2015 refugee crisis." AOM, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5465/amd.2016.0138.

Full text
Abstract:
Our paper focuses on a non-standard sharing example that harbors the potential to disrupt received wisdom on the sharing economy. While originally entering the field to analyze, broadly from a governance perspective, how the 2015 refugee crisis was handled in Vienna, Austria, we found that the non-governmental organization Train of Hope - labeled as a "citizen start-up" by City of Vienna officials - played an outstanding role in mastering the crisis. In a blog post during his visit in Vienna at the time, and experiencing the refugee crisis first-hand, it was actually Henry Mintzberg who suggested reading the phenomenon as part of the "sharing economy". Continuing this innovative line of thought, we argue that our unusual case is in fact an excellent opportunity to discover important aspects about both the nature and organization of sharing. First, we uncover an additional dimension of sharing beyond the material sharing of resources (i.e., the economic dimension): the sharing of a distinct concern (i.e., the moral dimension of sharing). Our discovery exemplifies such a moral dimension that is rather different from the status quo materialistic treatments focusing on economic transactions and property rights arguments. Second, we hold that a particular form of organizing facilitates the sharing economy: the sharing economy organization. This particular organizational form is distinctive - at the same time selectively borrowing and skillfully combining features from platform organizations (e.g., use of technology as an intermediary for exchange and effective coordination, ability to tap into external resources) and social movements (e.g., mobilization, shared identity, collective action). It is a key quality of this form of organization to enable the balancing of the two dimensions inherent in the nature of sharing: economic and moral. Our paper contributes to this Special Issue of the Academy of Management Discoveries by highlighting and explaining the two-fold economic and moral nature of sharing and the organization of sharing between movement and platform.

Abstract:
Organizations responding to humanitarian crises often have different organizational cultures and observational lenses, presenting barriers to collaborative efforts at the outset of a crisis. The inherently chaotic nature of these crises exacerbates this problem, slowing the speed of response and the degree of efficacy of the response effort. Researchers have examined these organizational differences but have not defined barriers to mutuality and possible ways to overcome those barriers presenting a gap in knowledge. The purpose of this study was to fill this gap by offering areas to focus on to improve cultural awareness between disparate organizations. The central research question investigated the extent to which intrinsic value descriptions of organizational cultures provide opportunities to mitigate barriers between the military and humanitarian aid workers. A qualitative study using narrative ethnography was applied in answering this question. Two Participants were recruited from the military and two from civilian aid organizations based upon their experience and insight and their commensurate ability to relate the need for mutual understanding between their organizations. Data were collected through descriptive interviews of the participants' lived experiences in crisis response. The data were coded using existing theory on cultural dimensions from Project GLOBE and then analyzed using relational theory. The results confirmed a need for more effective coordination and unity of effort, which may be achieved through cultural understanding and which can result in a more efficient crisis response. These findings may ease the suffering encountered in humanitarian crises by improving the collaborative education of both military and civilian responders to these crises.

Adrian, Ninnie, and Sofie Paulsson. "I krisens spår : Hur organisationer kan vända kris till kompetens." Thesis, Stockholm University, School of Business, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-37033.

Full text
Abstract:

Background and rationale: In the world we live in today the question is no longer ’if’ an organization will face a crisis, but ’when’ and ’how prepared’ is the organization to deal with it. The Tsunami that happened on December 26th 2004 was a disaster of unprecedented magnitude. It had an impact on the Swedish society in general and the travel industry in particular. As the travel industry is very susceptible to impacts by external factor, its participants can never be too prepared to face a crisis. In order to be better prepared for future crisis, organizations should seek to learn from their experiences.

The research question for this dissertation is: How can tour-operators improve their organizational competence by using experiences from a crisis?

The aim of the dissertation is:

  • To map the tour-operators’ crisis management work, and which parts of this work has changed as a result of the Tsunami.
  • To identify and compare the differences in the lessons learned by the tour-operators from the Tsunami.
  • To discuss and give recommendations on how experiences from crises can be used and lead to change, i.e. in better crisis management routines and higher organizational competence

Methodology: We have used a qualitative research method in our dissertation, our approach is deductive and for the gathering of empirical data, we have made semi-structured interviews. Our research model has been the base for the interviews. Our model shows how the different phases of a crisis – before, during and after – influence organizational competence. The selected companies for our research are the tour-operators Ving and Fritidsresor.

In our field study we map how the crisis management of the tour-operators is functioning today, and which parts of this work has changed as a result of the Tsunami. In our analysis we see that the tour-operators crisis management work in large parts coincides with the theories in the area, but there are differences in the learning processes of the organizations.

Results and conclusions drawn from our research are that the learning processes of the tour-operators already start during the crisis. By addressing the deficiencies observed during the Tsunami, new routines, systems and work processes have improved their preparedness for crisis. Both organizations have learned, but the focus at Ving has been on structural capital and at Fritidsresor on human capital. Both have introduced crisis rehearsals, but not throughout the whole organization. Whether the organizational competence to handle a big crisis has improved will be seen as the next large crisis occurs.

Abstract:
Tourism in rural areas has an important role of developing and altering the rural communities when it comes to the environment, social and economic structures. Rural areas have high potential in tourism development but the world is continuously experiencing the power of nature. December 2019 the world experienced the beginning of the Corona pandemic that would later affect the whole world in just weeks. The Corona pandemic has caused many problems throughout the world but one sector that was specifically affected was the tourism sector. Even though crises are to some extent random and rare, there is no organization that is immune from such events. Unfortunately, many tourism-oriented organizations have been affected by this crisis and there has been a marginal decrease in bookings from previous years. The purpose of this study is to examinate how different organizations manage, organize and plan for crises in rural destinations in Östergötland county. The focus lies on organizations that are dependent on tourism and that use tourism as their main sources of income. The study has a qualitative research approach meaning qualitative semi-structured interviews with organizations in rural destinations. The main findings were that organizations in rural areas don’t have experience about crisis management and therefore don’t adapt it in their organization. In order for organizations to reorganize and plan for the crisis there need to be guides and routines on how the organization will achieve it. By having different plans for different crises, the organization can be better prepared for the next one. The important steps in the reorganization are communication strategy, controlling resources and collaboration with stakeholders. No matter how big or small the organization is, it is important for each organization to have an organization plan in order to tackle and reduce the consequences of a crisis.

Abstract:
Billion-dollar disasters are projected to increase at a statistically significant rate of 5% annually. Crises affect the viability and lucrativeness of tourism business and implicate destinations in the process. Crisis preparedness is vital to improving outcomes and reducing consequential effects in the tourism industry-a key contributor to socioeconomic progress and infrastructural development worldwide. The study was an exploration of the strategies used for crisis preparedness to reduce business interruptions and improve the image of destinations affected by large-scale natural disasters and human-induced crises. A multiple case study was conducted based on the cycle of preparedness framework. Data were gathered from organization documents and semistructured interviews by telephone with 6 executives of 6 destination management organizations located in the south and west regions of the United States. Transcribed data were coded and then validated via member checking, revealing 3 themes: organizational preparedness, operational preparedness, and strategic communication. Specifically, possessing a crisis mindset, predetermining crisis risks and responses, and managing information to safeguard the reputation of tourism organizations and destinations were attributed to preparedness at the local and organization levels. Tourism and hospitality professionals may benefit from devising crisis plans, establishing rapport with crisis leaders and teams, and partnering with the media to promote positive perceptions and travel behaviors of tourists. Implications for social change include identifying strategies to limit the impact of crises on individuals and communities to improve the perceptions of safety of a tourist destination after a crisis and thus enhance its economic growth.

Abstract:
During the past five years the Red Cross has been involved in two different internal crises. All of them can be related to trustworthiness and brand image. Why would someone keep donating money to an organization that has been involved in fraud and suspicion of corruption? The purpose of this dissertation is to explore how non-governmental (NGO) and non-profit (NPO) organizations rebuild their brand image and trustworthiness after a crisis. We will look at the problem from both the organization’s and the public’s point of view. The dissertation is based on theories about brand image, trustworthiness and crisis management. For the theoretical framework a model was created from these different theories. This study is conducted as a qualitative case study with a realistic philosophy. The findings and analysis shows that the Red Cross has an elaborated crisis management with a good base that can be adapted to suit each situation. However, there are some miscommunications between the organization and the public. Therefore, we suggest three improvements that can be made: communicate directly to the public, investigate immediately when suspicions occur, communicate the internal functions to the public. The first conclusion is that their form of reactive crisis management is that they have a weak pre-emptive crisis management, which consists of diffuse guidelines. After the crisis, these guidelines are adapted to the crisis. The second conclusion is that the organizations brand image and trustworthiness was affected negatively directly after the crisis occurred. However, today both the brand image and the trustworthiness have become stronger than before the crisis. Recommendation for future research is that it can be conducted in another area and include the behavior aspects of the respondents. In addition, the crisis communication team could be investigated.

Abstract:
This study examines how an organization can use social media to solve preventable crises. Focus groups with a total of 14 moms are conducted to discuss a controversial Motrin babywearing advertisement and how Johnson & Johnson should have responded to the social media backlash. The results are explored based on dialogic public relations theory and its five components. Additional insights regarding the use of different social media channels and culture jamming YouTube videos suggest theoretical and practical implications on organizational responses on social media during preventable crises. The study also explores how people with high- and low-context cultures might respond differently to offensive advertising.

Abstract:

Abstract:
For-profit postsecondary education rapidly expanded in the decade preceding the 2008 financial crisis. For-profit institutions enrolled 9% of undergraduate students in 2009, up from 3% in 2000. This growth that was promising is now troubling. Significant enrollment declines in 2010-2012, in light of regulatory risk, recent GAO reports, and public scrutiny of recruiting and lending practices, suggest the foundations are not stable. This paper will analyze recent strategic decisions in the for-profit postsecondary education market using the framework developed by Brewer, Gates, and Goldman (2002) and make predictions about firm strategies and the future of the industry.

Statybos verslas viena iš didžiausią pridedamąją verte turinčių verslo šakų. 2008 metais kilusi pasaulio ekonominė krizė pasireiškė bendrojo vidaus vartojimo produkto mažėjimu. Krizę sukėlė keletas priežasčių: ilgalaikių pokyčių naftos rinkos kainodaroje bei su ja susijusių sferų - benzino, maisto produktų kainodaroje, nekilnojamo turto bei vertybinių popierių rinkoje ir bankininkystės sektoriuje kilusių nesklandumų. Tai padarė didelę įtaka statybos verslui. Vienos statybos organizacijos bankrutavo, kitos buvo priverstos reorganizuotis. Šiame moksliniame darbe analizavome Dariaus Beconio įmonės ir UAB „Šiaulių plentas“ veiklą krizės metu. Apžvelgėme įmonių vadovų priimtus sprendimus ir pateikėme pasiūlymus įmonių veiklos optimizavimui. Didžiausią dėmesį skyrėme logistikos taikymui ir įmonių logistikos tobulinimo galimybėms. Mokslinė literatūra analizuota nuo 2009 metų, o empirinis tyrimas atliktas 2011 metų sausio mėnesį.
Construction business is one of the most added-value industries. In 2008 the world economic crisis has occurred and gross domestic product fall in consumption. The crisis caused a number of reasons: long-term changes in market pricing of oil and related spheres - petrol, food pricing, real estate, the stock market and banking sector problems encountered. This had a significant impact on the construction business. One building companys went bankrupt, while others have been forced to reorganize. This study analyzes the Dariaus Beconio company and „Šiaulių plentas“ company activities in times of crisis. We overviewed what business leaders have made decisions and proposals to optimize business performance. We have concentrated on the application of logistics and logistics business development opportunities. Scientific literature was analized since 2009, and the empirical study was conducted in January 2011.

Abstract:
The newspaper industry has clearly been affected thoroughly by digitalization, and as a result has adapted its traditional practices to accommodate for the numerous possibilities this change presents. The printed paper is becoming less viable each day, while its online counterpart continues to gain recognition. In this thesis, we conduct a case study in order to examine a large-scale local newspaper company which has gone from analog to digital and beyond over the course of what is only a fraction of its lifetime. Qualitative interviews are conducted as part of the case study, providing us with valuable insight into both how the organization works and makes decisions as well as the perspectives of individuals. The results are analyzed through applying a theoretical framework, building on previous research regarding digitalization and convergence. The study reveals that post-digitalization technological practices and investment decisions are heavily influenced by a pre-digitalization mindset on many organizational levels, leading to a utilization of new technological services in a manner which leaves much to be desired. Still, the organization competes very well on their market as the printed issue is able to carry its own weight and more. However, sales decline rapidly, and uncertainty combined with excitement clouds the future as the organization are eager to utilize new technology, yet remain divided in opinion on what strategy to adopt when taking on new challenges in an ever more digital context. This hints of many changes to come, with the most intriguing one being what has been identified as a possible change to the very identity of the company.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine different organizations' views on their communicative crisis work. The study will analyze organizations' crisis prevention efforts, its views on the crisis of accountability in relation to stakeholders and to work for a crisis to be elucidated. In order to delineate the study focuses the investigation on various train organizations. Then the concept of crisis is something that circulated widely in the train sector in recent years. Theory: This examination has chosen to use the theory Situational Crisis Communication Theory. It is an empirically tested theory of a collection of different strategies. The theory is about to work out a framework, a sort of guide that intends to provide guidance in a crisis. The theory is based on the knowledge of how an organization's stakeholders react to a crisis, which in turn makes it possible to prepare a crisis prevention work. This will in turn protect an organization's reputation in a crisis. The study also focuses on how an organization chooses to look at a crisis. The organization can choose to see it as a single event that is unpredictable or as a part of the organization's life cycle. Within SCCT publishes Image Restoration Theory of a substantial part. The theory is about how stakeholders perceive an organization and highlights the importance of communication mix with a social aspect. Method: The empirical examination in this study consists of five qualitative interviews, conversations with carefully selected respondents in different train organizations information and communications services. This survey aims to study organizations´ approach to its crisis communication efforts. Findings: The study shows that crisis preclusive information seems to be about to be formalized within the investigated train organizations. The idea of the information system is to provide protective and preparatory information to an organization's stakeholders. What also emerges is the variation that exists in the regarding crisis definitions the investigated organizations.

Abstract:

The ability to deal with change gains in importance due to the fast moving environment. The current crisis reveals that it is not sufficient for companies to react. They need to be prepared and implement change continuously. The significance of Change Management is justified as the competence to deal with change can be considered decisive for gaining competitive advantage. Organizations need to change in order to sustain.

Several theories and concepts exist to increase an organization's efficiency in terms of handling changes. The theoretical framework is settled on four issues within Change Management: change, drivers for change, implementation and roles in an organization. It is of prior importance to identify the nature of the specific change as well as the driving forces for it.

By this, information for the implementation process is provided. We present strategies for implementing and also steps or ingredients which have to be unconditionally considered. We try to point out some facilitators for implementation such as organizational learning.

We finally describe four key roles that are  influencing implementation of change. However, we especially focus on leaders and employees and compare top-down and bottom-up implementation.

We proceed with the same basis of four parts to analyze the discussions we led with change agents.

Finally we propose key factors we believe that organizations need to lead a change process successfully.

Abstract:
Theories on strategic analysis, alignment and organizational configurations are no longer sufficient for companies to ensure their survival. Environments become more and more turbulent. Skills of anticipation are not good enough now, companies need also adaptability. Research works from Weick K.E. on the HRO (High Reliability Organizations) and from other authors who work on crisis management have enabled us to identify the concept of organizational resilience. Resilience is usually defined as the properties of a system able to sustain a severe shock, to bounce and to grow again. We defined organizational resilience as the manifestation, during a traumatic crisis, of one or more of these three processes: individual psychological resilience process, collective resilience or eco environmental resilience. These processes when they occur, allow the company to survive to the crisis

Abstract:

Researchers and practitioners continue to study the causes of high consequence failures in complex socio-technical systems. Often linear causal pathways are identified in investigations that blame individual human error, or technical malfunctions. This study represents a significant expansion in the analysis of high profile accidents, crimes, crises, and tragedies to accommodate system complexity. Presented is a model of socio-technical system wholeness that provides an integral framework with which socio-technical system deficiencies are analyzed. The research questions if lack of systemic wholeness is the cause for selected high profile events.

This case study used historical documents pertaining to 13 actual events that included espionage, high consequence accidents, mass killings, and the response to natural disasters. The documentation included government commission reports and previously recorded interviews. A hermeneutic analysis method guided the iterative development of deficiency codes. These codes were assigned to key statements in the documentation that described the varied deficiencies. The qualitative analysis software, Atlas.ti aided in the coding of approximately 5,000 of pages of documentation. Deficiency codes were then organized and the highest frequency codes are listed and are also shown graphically on the integral model, to reveal characteristic patterns.

In all of the cases, significant deficiencies are shown in all dimensions of the integral wholeness model. Deficiencies are described as systemic holes and shadow aspects. Holes and shadow aspects form patterns within and among cases, spanning the various subject areas. Systemic boundaries pertaining to each case are also described using the wholeness model. In several of the cases, multiple systems are shown with systemic links. Deficiencies in the links were also identified from the data and are presented.

The dynamic process of movement towards socio-technical systems wholeness is perpetual. It is also essential when the consequence of socio-technical systems failure threatens individuals, communities or the natural environment. The research shows the need for constant vigilance and attention to holes in protective defenses, and reconciliation with shadow aspects to avert systemic failure. This research has a broad span. Additional research opportunities include using this wholeness model for in-depth analysis of single socio-technical system prior to failure

Abstract:
This study investigated the most common frames used in news coverage of the Church of Scientology from 2009 to 2013. Using textual analysis, with framing and public relations theories as lenses, this study examined recent news coverage – both print and television – to identify frames used, and the potential public relations crises the Church is currently facing due to this media exposure. Analysis showed three major frames used during coverage, along with their corresponding sub-frames, which highlight certain aspects of the frame: Culture of Abuse (Imprisonment, Controlling, Family Disconnection, Exploitation of Children, Violence, and Financial Abuse), The Information Paradox (Conflicting Information, Simple Misunderstanding, and Non-Traditional Approach), and Leadership Issues (The Problem Lies with Leadership, Celebrity Obsession). Also uncovered were three potential public relations crises: The Mistreatment of Church Members, The Misuse of Funds, and Bad Communication Strategy. The research showed a strong strategic preference of the Church to use legal tactics or denial strategies when dealing with crises. A review of public relations theory suggests that the Church use a more open approach and also incorporate mortification strategies to accept blame and repair their damaged image.

Full text
Abstract:
The management of internal political crises has become the most visible and controversial activity of international organizations today. It is because of this ambivalence that this thesis takes the pretext of the management of political crises by the Francophonie and the African Union to examine the articulation between the political multilateralism and the principle of sovereignty of the States in situation of internal political crisis in Africa. The principal question is to know what remains from the principle of sovereignty in view of the recurrence of the multilateral interventions of these two organizations in issues of strict States sovereignty. The answer is given through a deep analysis of the political, legal and philosophical trajectories of the interaction between State sovereignty and multilateral interferences in the history of Westphalian bill international relations. Moreover, this thesis makes a theoretical retrospective on the question of interferences in general, before dwelling in a specific and empirical way on the interventionist trajectories of the Francophonie and the African Union in Ivory Coast, Madagascar and Central African Republic. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the multilateral management of internal political crises is characterized by its operational complexity: on the one hand, it enables the intervening international organizations to practice a kind of "ransom" for the political freedom of their member States, and on the other hand, it is an opportunity to “instrumentalize” the international organizations that engage in it

Title: Crisis prevention work in health care - A study that highlights the importance of crisis plans and other crisis preparations for decisions on resource allocations in a crisis situation caused by an external incident.    Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration   Authors: Elina Ylvenius and Torbjörn Olsson   Supervisor: Emilia Kvarnström   Date: 2021 - June   Aim: To create a deeper understanding of the importance of different types of crisis prevention work in healthcare when it comes to making decisions during an ongoing external crisis. The purpose is to increase knowledge about the importance of crisis plans and other crisis preparations for healthcare workers' decision-making in a crisis situation caused by an external incident.   Method: The study uses two qualitative research methods in parallel. The empirical material consists of data from semi-structured interviews that are based on four sub-areas: Experience in healthcare, crisis management and crisis preparedness, resource allocation and decision-making. The empirical data is also based on policy documents such as regional crisis management plans.   Results and conclusions: The study shows that emergency preparedness planning in the form of control documents does not work in practice. It also shows that the control documents' perception varies between different positions in healthcare. Finally, the study shows which crisis preparation measures are actually perceived to work in practice.   Contribution of the thesis: The research contributes to an understanding of how crisis management in healthcare works in practice. It contributes to an understanding of healthcare workers’ own perceptions of various emergency preparedness measures. The essay shows how experience and other types of crisis preparation affect healthcare during an external crisis.   Suggestions for future research: To find out why the structure of the crisis prevention plans does not work in practice in healthcare. It feels highly relevant to try to create an understanding of this and create an image of why their function is lacking when it comes to functioning as part of healthcare's crisis management.   Key words: Management, organization, crisis management, preventive crisis work, decision-making, healthcare, resource allocation

Abstract:
A prominent British newspaper and its website publishes an inflammatory article stating that a lifeboat charity has been cynically abused by migrant traffickers who are using it as a ‘free ferry service’ to get their cargo of human beings into the United Kingdom. What reaction is generated on the Twitter social media network? What narrative, language usage and sentiment is formed? How does the charity react? This thesis examines this case and discovers through word frequency and conversational analysis how one news story reverberated in 280 characters or less. Themes impacted by this research include Twitter as a social media network service, fake news, echo chambers and their bubbles, trust and audience perception, news media literacy, social campaigning and awareness, and crisis communication and news/stakeholder management. The conclusion reached is that the story had the potential to adversely affect the charity’s reputation and future income stream even though it was doing its duty because of its unwillingness or inability to engage with stakeholders and correct any misunderstandings. The thesis discusses why this was not a good idea and considers how the story could have developed into a broader, more damaging entity with relative ease, especially with the role social media can play for news consumers in today’s society.

This thesis examines the evolution of NATO as an institution in the International System by reference to Articles 4, 5 and 6 of the Washington Treaty of 1949. Initially, the thesis considers NATO from an international relations perspective. It then proceeds to examine the institutional evolutionary process of the Alliance since its inception and implementation in 1949. Furthermore, it explores the significance and the meaning of the aforementioned Articles. This thesis utilizes the case study method and refers to four distinct events that have shaped allied policies and strategies: the Suez Crisis of 1956, the establishment of the politico-military consultation process, the Yom Kippur War (1973), and the end of the Cold War (1989-1991). It also examines the allied policies after the events of September 11, 2001. Moreover, it identifies a general pattern of events pertinent to crisis creation inside NATO when the organization is facing a defense issue outside the Euro-Atlantic area. Finally, the thesis concludes that NATO is more than an ordinary military Alliance, as advocated by its longevity, agility and adaptability, which allows the Alliance to maintain a central position in the International System as a robust politico-military organization.

Abstract:
The following is a qualitative study that examines how the Swedish tourism industry has handled the COVID-19 pandemic during the year 2020. The study also focuses on the ethical dilemma that the tourism industry has been faced with, considering taking their responsibility to not increase the spread of the virus and simultaneously keeping a functioning organization. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 many industries have been negatively affected. One of the largest industries that has been affected is the tourism industry. Gotland is one of Sweden's most popular tourism destinations and is therefore an interesting location to study. The theoretical framework includes definitions and theories about crisis management as well as the crisis management process. The research methodology contains semistructured interviews. All of the respondents that we are interviewing are working in different branches within the Swedish tourism industry. When analysing the empirical data, we find that the respondents had been taking special actions in order to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. A strong ambition and the ability to be responsive seem to be qualities to desire when faced with a crisis. The ethical dilemma was managed through special actions that resulted in lost profits, however it also resulted in limiting the spread of the virus

Abstract:
Problem: Crisis and crisis preparedness are being increasingly discussed within the business world. Especially now, when the current pandemic triggered maybe the most significant wave of economic downturns the globe is facing ever. Nevertheless, the Manufacturing Industry (MI) was severely impacted due to its dependence on the e.g., supply chain aspect. Therefore, it was interesting to explore how MO’s challenge crisis by investigating how they prepare for a crisis, i.e., crisis preparedness. A review of the topic within the scientific papers shows a lack of knowledge regarding crisis preparedness within MO’s. Purpose: This thesis aimed to increase how MO’s prepare for a crisis and explore what measures (actions) they use to prepare for a crisis. Method: This thesis followed a qualitative research approach (inductive) with a multiple case study design approach. The data were collected by three semi-structured interviews with three major organizations, where all the participants had a long experience with crisis management. Later on, the collected data were analyzed thematically (thematic analysis approach). Empirical findings: The empirical findings showed that organizations need to consider four main aspects when building a solid crisis preparation structure. These aspects consist of: (1) careful understanding of the environment the crisis occurred in, (2) possess extensive experience dealing with a crisis, (3) scenarios practices, (4) strong communication and transparency system, and finally (5) fostering crisis preparedness culture within the organization. All these aspects/skills must be acquired within the crisis management team (CMT). However, the communication aspect stood out more than the other aspects, which indicate the importance of communication within the organization. Contribution: This thesis contributes theoretically by emphasizing the essentiality of the communication aspect and its positive impact on a crisis preparedness process within organizations. Likewise, from a managerial perspective, this thesis suggests that organizations should implement a crisis communication hub, where all departments within an organization possess all necessary tools to help them survive any crisis through an effective communication system.

Abstract:

Title: Crisis communication strategy and brand – A case study of Swedish Red Cross

through dialog analysis

Author: Anneli Saarela

Presented: 01.06.2010

Purpose: The study addresses the subjects of crisis communication and organisational brand, in relation to stakeholders and brand reputation. The purpose of this essay is to study the dialog regarding the crisis of remunerations with the Swedish Red Cross and how the organisation responds to the criticism. An identification and analysis of the discourse regarding the brand are also included in the study. Part of the empirical material will also be used in relation to Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT). This to find which strategy is most accurate to the one which the Swedish Red Cross seemingly has implemented.

Methodology: The study uses dialog analysis to gather the empirical material. The dialog of interest for this study consists of four different written texts. These texts are analysed with the help of concepts such as: content, context, intertextuality, recontextualisation and relation. Further, through these concepts the study uses a series of initial questions to start the analysis with regard to the concepts.

Theoretical perspectives: The theoretical base for this essay consists of relevant theories to crisis management and branding. These are Situational Crisis Communication Theory, crisis communication and rhetoric as well as ideas regarding identity, stakeholders and reputation. I have used these as tools in my analysis as well as to understand the concept regarding crisis and the effects on an organisation, the brand and stakeholder relationships.

Conclusions: The results show that the texts in the dialog are influenced by earlier texts to a great extent. Interesting enough the stakeholders hold the board members responsible and not the whole organisation itself. This may be because the reporting has been mainly focused on the individuals and their remunerations in the earlier stages of the crisis. In regards to rebuilding the trust and organisational brand the analysis show that the organisation should make changes regarding the members of the board, as it is those who are strongly attributed to the crisis by the interest groups. The analysis in relation to SCCT show that the Swedish Red Cross chose a strategy involving less responsibility than SCCT would have proposed. Although regarding the bolstering strategies the organisation did as SCCT would suggest and put emphasis on the earlier work the organisation has done and took advantage of its strong reputation.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses the financing of non-governmental organizations. The main part is devoted to financial sources which can use Czech non-profit organizations (NGOs). Fundraising is how NGOs get financial and non-financial support. The practical part consists of an analysis of financial sources and survey among NGOs. The aim is to analyze selected changes that influence non-profit organizations and their fundraising activities. An economic crisis had a significant impact on non-profit organizations. It has slightly changed the structure of financial resources. Although there was an increase in own revenues, government grants are still the dominant source. Importance of European funds also grows. The new Civil Code which came into force on 1 January, 2014 can strengthen individual and corporate donations.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose: In a competitive and constituently changing global business environment, it is almost  impossible  for  organizations  to  avoid  crises  of  various  types  and  magnitude.  The objective of this study is to display relationships between perception of crisis awareness, crisis readiness and the organizations` actual crisis management initiatives against major industrial crises. This thesis also aims to clarify if the perception of crisis-awareness and crisis-readiness could be affected by other factors that should be in considerations, which in turn could affect the outcomes of crisis-management initiatives and actions in industrial organizations. Methodology:  By  way  of  introduction,  the  problem,  which  is  related  to  the  industrial crises and proactive crisis-management and which also refers to the core topic of the study was formulated and discussed. Research questions about “How the employee’s perception of crisis- awareness  and  crisis-readiness  affects  the  outcomes  of  an  organization's  crisis-management initiatives?”  and “How  top  managements  could  affect  the  employee’s  perception  of  crisis- awareness and crisis-readiness positively toward PCM in their organization?” were identified. The  covering  and  important  data  was  collected  through  scientific  literatures  and  articles  and was presented in the theory part. Collected data and empirical findings from the world’s two largest automaker namely, Volkswagen and Toyota, whom has been involved in scandals and crises related to core research of this paper. Empirical findings has been analyzed and finally the answer to the research questions were proposed. Findings: The result of the research indicates that the perception of crisis awareness and crisis  readiness  in  organization  have  a  direct  impact  on  the  organizations  crisis  management initiatives  and  activities  and  also  there  are  elements  like Corporate  Culture,  Personnel Education in Crisis Management and Corporate Communication and also other factors, which would affect the perceptions in organizations. Implication:  The  study  suggest  that  by  effective  use  of  elements  presented  here, organizations could influence employees crisis awareness and crisis readiness positively, thus strengthening the organizations crisis management capacities.
