This thesis analyzes the economic crises of recent years through the lens of the Regulation Theory. It focuses on the Greek Crisis of 2009 and the Turkish Financial Crises of 2000 and 2001. The thesis tries to answer the questions of whether or not Regulation Theory proves to be a sufficient tool for analyzing these crises and whether or not these fit the definition of crisis that the Regulation Theory puts forward. This thesis provides an economic analysis of banking crisis, regulation and deposit insurance. Chapter 1 offers a critical review of the literature, identifying the main determinants of banking crises and their channels of contagion. Chapter 2 studies the effectiveness of deposit insurance in containing panic runs when depositors have private information. The region of panic runs decreases with the size of the guarantee and the degree of supervisory involvement of the agency in charge of insurance. This thesis takes as its starting point claims that practices of financial speculation in commodity derivative markets were instrumental in the causation of the global food crisis in 2007-08. Adopting an approach informed by critical legal studies, I seek to challenge dominant conceptions about the role that law has played in this context. Campaigners concerned about these practices place great faith in financial regulation as means of restraining ‘excessive’ speculation. If maintaining financial stability is not fulfilled, systemic risk can again lead to damages to the financial and real economy in the form of a credit crunch as seen in the early stages of the crisis of 2008. Depuis son éruption en septembre 2009, la crise de la zone euro a été au centre de l'attention des économistes et des décideurs politiques. Researchers have contended that freedom from regulation encourages risk-taking and earning of higher profits, but there is a lack of empirical evidence addressing this relationship. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate whether lack of regulations result in increased return on equity. The theoretical framework was regulatory arbitrage by Ricks M, Gennaioli N, Shleifer A, and Vishny R. The research

Abstract:
Many analysts believe that problems in the U.S. housing market initiated the 2008–2010 global financial crisis.
