Abstract:
Quantitative studies of the vestibular system with serially sectioned human temporal bones have been limited because of difficulty in distinguishing hair cells from supporting cells and type I from type II hair cells. In addition, there is only a limited amount of normative data available regarding vestibular hair cell counts in humans. In this study, archival temporal bone sections were examined by Nomarski (differential interference contrast) microscopy, which permitted visualization of the cuticular plate and stereociliary bundle so as to allow unambiguous identification of hair cells. Both symptomatic and occult nonoperated ILS were included for further analysis. Results: A total of 6 ILS were identified, with 4 intracochlear and 2 intravestibular schwannomas. All intracochlear schwannomas involved th

Abstract:
The assessment of habitat selection and temporal patterns of activity rhythms is paramount for wildlife conservation. Studies on behavioural ecology of wild mammals are particularly challenging in tropical areas, mostly when involving rare or elusive species. Despite being a common species in Italy, the crested porcupine Hystrix cristata is threatened of extinction throughout most of its sub-Saharan range. All available information on the ecology of this species has been collected in Italy, whereas no data is present in the scientific literature on spatiotemporal behaviour of this large rodent

Abstract:
Abstract Background Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common atrial arrhythmia. The initiation and perpetuation of AF are related to atrial remodeling affecting the electrical and structural atrial characteristics. The beat-to-beat analysis of the P-wave morphology (PWM), during sinus rhythm (SR), revealed the existence of a secondary PWM, while the proportion of the P-waves which follow the secondary morphology is higher in patients with a history of paroxysmal AF (pAF). This observation has led to the hypothesis that the multiple PWM may be the result of a transient shift in the stimulus
