This chapter examines the theoretical underpinnings of nudge theory and makes a case for incorporating nudging into the decision-making process in corporate contexts. Nudging and more broadly behavioural economics have become buzzwords on account of the seminal work that has been done by economists and highly publicized interventions employed by governments to support national priorities. Firms are not to be left behind, however. What follows is extensive documentation of such firms that have successfully employed nudging techniques. The examples are segmented by the nudge recipient, namely - managers, employees, and consumers. Firms can guide managers to become better leaders, employees to become more productive, and consumers to stay loyal. However, nudging is not without its pitfalls. It can be used towards nefarious ends and be notoriously difficult to implement and execute. Therefore, nudges should be rigorously tested via experimentation and should be ethically sound.

In Industry 4.0, current trends on data analysis and real-time processing are intertwined with the use of development tools while conceiving products. The quality of information plays a pivotal role in this process, as the heterogeneity of unprocessed data may result in issues that increase the product’s cost and development time. In this context, the Failure Mode & Effect Analysis (FMEA) is a tool that aids decision-making by presenting pre-processed useful data that can improve product design, maintainability and manufacturing. FMEA criteria, although standardised, has ramifications that have different impacts and weight in an organisation, which might end up resulting in subjective evaluations. To cope with this issue and improve the quality of the information in product development, this research proposes a Multi-Criteria approach to define the importance of FMEA criteria and their impacts in organisations in a real industrial scenario. This research is applied using a case on a Brazilian electronics manufacturer, using AHP and TOPSIS Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods. Findings show that by traditional methods different evaluators end up generating different data and weights on FMEA, resulting in different results. In this sense, the application of the Multi-Criteria methods ends up ranking the importance of criteria and evaluating the inputs from all departments, returning more precise information. Furthermore, the weighting scale of FMEA has been shifted to a customised scale for the organisation in the study, based on AHP, more suitable to their needs and following their perception, to support the decision-makers most assertively.

Food security is one of the greatest challenges that characterises our times. One central argument in related conferences and symposia is the need to increase production for a growing population. However, major international organisations and other research institutions hold instead that food production exceeds current need and the reasons of food insecurity reside more in the complex concurrence and interdependence of poverty, access to food, local economic development and political and socioeconomic circumstances. Governance for sustainability is presented in this article as a process of multidisciplinary and participatory social learning about these interdependences, both general criteria and the context-based practices to which decision-makers are accountable. In order to reflect this approach a ‘GAME' (Governance Assessment Matrix Exercise) methodology and framework is developed to inform more evidence-based and accountable decision making.

Information systems evaluation is embedded in many social and organisational processes, and thus is a particularly complex decision process. Evaluation happens in many ways (e.g. formally, informally), uses diverse criteria (e.g. financial, technical, social), follows rigorous methodologies or gut feelings and often becomes a political instrument which influences the balance of organisational power. The existing literature (Ballantine et al., 1995; Farbey et al. 1992; Willcocks and Lester 1994; Ward et al. 1996) identifies noticeable gaps between academic theories, commercially available methodologies, and actual evaluation practice within organisations. Such gaps between theory and practice are not unusual and they have been reported in other research areas. Hsia (1993 p.14) for example argues: “The truth is that most companies have two sets of practices; one real, the other recommended.” In other words there are the formal evaluation practices promoted by organisational rules and structures, the informal practices implemented by stakeholders involved, and finally the academic recommendations which in many cases recognise the delicate nature of evaluation and suggest more interpretive considerations. The better theories tend to emphasise the complexity and richness of the evaluation problem situation or context while the available methodologies tend to oversimplify the process through cookbooks that focus on the more measurable aspects of the outcome of IT/IS investment. Meanwhile, the actual use of such methodologies in practice is often largely determined by the subjective views of individual stakeholders facing a combination of business, organisational and technological pressures.

The aim of this chapter is to select the most suitable combination of maintenance policies in the different systems that make up an operating theatre: air conditioning, sterile water, power supply, medicinal gases, and operating theatre lighting. To do so, a multicriteria model will be developed using the Measuring Attractiveness by a Categorical Based Evaluation Technique (MACBETH) approach considering multiple decision centres. The model uses functional, safety, and technical-economic criteria, amongst which is availability. Mean availability for repairable systems has been measured to assess this criterion, using Markov chains from the data obtained over three years from the subsystems of a hospital operating theatre. The alternatives considered are corrective maintenance; preventive maintenance together with corrective maintenance by means of daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly programmes; periodical predictive maintenance together with corrective maintenance; and corrective together with preventive and predictive maintenance.
